Marcus Davis to debut at Conquer against ‘Ragin’ Kajan Johnson

Already sporting a talent-rich lightweight roster, the Maximum Fighting Championship has added one of the division’s most powerful strikers, and a fighter who has targeted big finishes in fan-favorite encounters.

Marcus “The Irish Hand Grenade” Davis has signed a multi-fight deal with the Maximum Fighting Championship, and will make his much-anticipated debut when S.L. Feldman’s & Associates presents MFC 29: Conquer at The Colosseum at Caesars Windsor on Friday, April 8. Tickets for the event go on sale at Noon ET on Friday, March 4 at www.caesarswindsor.com and The Colosseum box office.

Davis (17-8) is expected to meet the livewire “Ragin” Kajan Johnson (18-11-1) in one of the featured matchups that will air live on HDNet Fights.

The Bangor, Maine, product and member of Team Sityodtong already feels like he has found a home in the MFC which prides itself in pushing the entertainment envelope.

“I feel I’m sort of the Nostradamus of MMA,” explained Davis. “When I started in the sport I was talking to boxing magazines and told them that MMA was going to take over boxing. They said I was crazy but it happened.

“I feel the same about being in the MFC. (Owner/President) Mark Pavelich has done a very good job not only developing his brand but also developing his fighters. That’s why I made the choice I did.

“I’m a fighter who wears his heart on his sleeve. I go out and give it all I’ve got to be entertaining. I think my style fits very well with the MFC.”

Davis is well-known for his all-out clashes as the 37-year-old has built a reputation of fights that leave a lasting impression. His career is highlighted by an 11-fight winning streak that included victories over notables such as Pete Spratt, Shonie Carter, Forrest Petz, Paul Taylor, and Jess Liaudin. While building up six knockouts and eight submission stoppages, Davis has captured victories over rival big punchers such as Jonathan Goulet, Chris Lytle, and Paul Kelly.

“No matter what, every time I fight, I try to end the fight and I’m bleeding all over somebody,” cracked Davis.

“I think the MFC lightweight division is stacked but there’s no doubt I’m the best striker. That’s what I’m going to bring. I’m going to get right in there. I’m looking forward to coming in and making a big splash.”

Johnson, who fights out of Vancouver, B.C., is coming off a one-sided decision win over Ryan Healy at MFC 27. Although Johnson sports four knockouts and 10 submissions on his resume, Davis doesn’t expect his upcoming foe to be ready for this sizeable step up.

“He hasn’t faced the type of competition I’ve faced and he has no idea the level of where my confidence is at,” added Davis. “He’s tough but I’m very confident.”

MIAMI-A press conference was held to announce “Friday Night Fights at the Cosmopolitan” a night of world-class professional boxing at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, presented by The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas in association with Warriors Boxing and Blue Wave Group, and televised live on ESPN2’s “Friday Night Fights”.

“Friday Night Fights at the Cosmopolitan” will feature five fighters in the next generation of Cuban boxing stars: Erislandy Lara (15-0, 10 KO’s), light middleweight Yudel Jhonson (9-0, 6 KO’s), cruiserweight Yunier Dorticos (10-0, 10 KO’s), super featherweight Rances Barthelemy (10-0, 8 KO’s), and light heavyweight Vilier Quinones (2-0, 2 KO’s).

Antonio DeMarco Escapes With 12-Round Unanimous Decision Win

LAS VEGAS/GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (Feb. 26, 2011) — In an all action fight, Brandon Rios captured the World Boxing Association (WBA) Lightweight championship from Miguel Acosta via 10th round knockout in the first night of a stacked 2011 lineup for SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING® and SHOWTIME PPV®. In the evening’s co-feature, Antonio DeMarco won a unanimous decision over Reyes Sanchez.

“A star was born tonight,” said Hall of Fame Top Rank promoter Bob Arum as Rios (27-0-1, 19 KOs) thrilled the crowd with an action-packed performance and 10th round knockout victory over Acosta at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas. The 32-year-old Venezuelan had the early upper hand over Rios by moving around the ring and landing hard punches to the head. Acosta (28-4-2, 22 KOs) was able to stifle Rios’ game plan by boxing the brawler with a strong jab through the first several rounds. But by the end of the fifth, Rios finished with a flurry and walked back to his corner with a sense of confidence that shined throughout the rest of the fight.

In the sixth, Rios, 27, was finally able to force Acosta to engage in an inside scrap. Rios, the naturally larger fighter, started unloading his heavy hands and eventually dropped Acosta with a left jab. “I’ve got a pretty good jab … when I use it,” joked the predominantly come-forward fighter.

The knockdowns didn’t stop there. Rios, fighting out of Oxnard, Calif., continued to apply pressure and forced an off-balance Acosta to the canvas with a left in the eighth before pleasing the pro-Rios crowd in the 10th with a knockout punch that landed Acosta off his feet for the final time at 1:14 in the 10th round.

With tears of joy in his eyes after the fight, the newly-crowned champ showed tremendous modesty in his reaction. “I proved I’ve got a good chin now,” Rios said with a smile. As for what’s next for Rios, the determined fighter said he would fight anyone in the lightweight division. “Whatever Bob Arum wants,” said Rios as Arum looked on with a proud smile.

Following his first loss since 2003, a disheartened Acosta admitted, “I’m more sad than hurt. I prepared for the fight but Brandon Rios has power.”

Though in vastly different locales, the SHOWTIME sweet science scenario in the Midwest featured the same division as Las Vegas. In front of a near sellout crowd of 6,000 at Heartland Events Center in Grand Island, Neb., lightweight DeMarco (25-2-1, 18 KOs) earned his position as the mandatory challenger for the WBC lightweight belt by defeating a game Sanchez.

In the opening minute of the 12-round distance bout between two Mexican fighters, DeMarco landed a big left hand that opened a cut above Sanchez’ left eye. The third round featured DeMarco scoring with a left hook that brought Sanchez (20-4-1, 11 KOs) down before referee Vic Drakulich correctly ruled it a slip. The gash and near knockdown, however, had little impact on Sanchez as the cut fighter proceeded to back up DeMarco throughout the second half of the fight. Though aggressive, Sanchez’ punches were slow, soft and caused little to no damage.

Sanchez kept the fight competitive but eventually lost a unanimous decision by the scores of 116-112, 117-111, 115-113.

Coming off of his first career loss to Edwin Valero one year ago, DeMarco didn’t have the dominant performance he hoped for against the long and lanky Sanchez but showed poise throughout the fight in contrast to his barroom brawler days of yesteryear on ShoBox: The New Generation.

Said DeMarco: “Sanchez is a great fighter and he threw a lot of punches. It was a great fight. I love fighting in Nebraska. The crowd was really into it. That really motivated me.”

As part of the crowd, former world champions Frank Tate and Leon Spinks looked on from Nebraska where the state held its first night of boxing in three years. In contrast, the host of countless boxing matches, Las Vegas, featured some current boxing stars in the crowd including Urbano Antillon, who will rematch Humberto Soto after their 2010 fight of the year barnburner on the May 7 Manny Pacquiao-Shane Mosley undercard on SHOWTIME PPV, and Rios’ stablemate Nonito Donaire.

Tonight’s lightweight action will replay on Tuesday, March 1, at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT on SHO Extreme and be available On Demand beginning March 1 through March 14.

Steve Albert called the action with Al Bernstein serving as expert analyst and Jim Gray as ringside reporter in Las Vegas, while Curt Menefee handled blow-by-blow in Nebraska with Steve Farhood on hand for color commentary.

Toka Kahn-Clary on Road to London

PROVIDENCE (February 25, 2011) – U.S. Olympic Boxing Team hopeful Toka Kahn- Clary, an 18-year-old senior at E3 Academy in Providence, has started 2011 in winning fashion having already won gold medals at three different tournaments.

The Liberia-native who moved to Providence 12 years ago opened 2011 by taking top honors at the New England Tournament of Champions at Foxwoods Casino, followed by a gold-medal performance in the Northeast Regional Championships at Lake Placid, New York. This past Tuesday night at the New England Golden Gloves Tournament in Lowell (MA), Toka captured gold in the 132-pound lightweight division, one year after he won it all in the 123-pound bantamweight class. Two years ago, he won a silver medal at the New Englands as a 16-year-old.

Kahn-Clary, whose amateur record is a sparkling 69-6, has qualified for The USA Boxing National Championships, June 20-25, at Colorado Springs. The top four finishers will qualifier for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials to box for a spot on the squad competing at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Peter Manfredo, Sr. has trained Kahn-Clary at Manfredo’s Gym in Pawtucket since the prodigy first laced-up a pair of boxing gloves. “Toka is one of the best boxers I’ve ever coached,” Manfredo said. “He’s going to be an even better pro boxer because I’ve always trained him that way. Toka doesn’t throw pitter-patter punches; he has great speed, power, heart and trains like an animal. He runs four miles every morning before he goes to school and is in the gym every day for at least three hours. He will do whatever it takes to get on the U.S. Olympic Team. In addition to his boxing talent, Toka is a real good kid who listens.”

The highlight of Kahn-Clary’s amateur boxing career, thus far, was winning the bantamweight title at the National Golden Gloves Tournament.

If Toka qualifies as a member of the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team, it will mark the third straight Olympics in which Rhode Island is represented, joining Jason Estrada and Demetrius Andrade from the 2004 and 2008 squads, respectively.

NEW YORK (Feb. 25, 2011) — Born in Texas, reared in Kansas and now “living the life” in Southern California, World Boxing Association (WBA) No. 1 contender Brandon Rios will fight for his first world title belt on the year’s first SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING telecast Feb. 26 LIVE on SHOWTIME at 10 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).

Rios (26-0-1, 18 KOs) faces current WBA lightweight champion Miguel Acosta (28-3-2, 22 KOs) in the 12-round main event while talented Mexican fighters Antonio DeMarco (24-2-1, 18 KOs) and Reyes Sanchez (20-3-1, 11 KOs) battle in the co-feature. The Rios-Acosta fight will take place at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas and the DeMarco-Sanchez affair will originate from the Heartland Events Center in Grand Island, Neb.

The 24-year-old Rios, who has won eight fights in a row including seven by knockout, is currently living in Oxnard, Calif., and being trained by Robert Garcia.

Question: You really opened a lot of eyes back in September with your win over previously undefeated and favored Anthony Peterson. Was that your coming-out party?

Rios: “Yeah, that Peterson win brought me out into the world and showed people what I could do.
I think the way I showed no mercy in coming forward and just duking it out with the guy; people liked that. And I think people follow me now more because of that.”

Question: What do you think about Miguel Acosta? Was he the opponent you wanted next?

Rios: “He’s a very physical fighter and moves around very well. To tell you the truth, I really wanted to fight (current World Boxing Council lightweight champion) Humberto Soto next for the WBC world title. After he fought on Sept. 4 and won he was supposed to fight me but then he decided he didn’t want to and I don’t know why. Instead they gave me another world title shot with the WBA champion so I’m OK with that.”

Question: Are you pumped to be fighting for the first time on SHOWTIME?

Rios: “I’ve never fought on SHOWTIME or ShoBox. I’ve fought a couple of times on the Spanish channels so I feel good coming back to an American channel so that everyone in the U.S. can see me. A lot of champions have fought on SHOWTIME and I want to be the next one. On Feb. 26 you’re going to see some of the world’s best lightweights. This is like our little SHOWTIME Tournament. Maybe the winners might meet up next time. You never know.”

Question: How did you meet your trainer Robert Garcia?

Rios: “I met Robert at the 2004 Olympic Trials in Mississippi. He brought me to California and said let’s do this. I met the Top Rank guys and went out to Vegas and met with Cameron (Dunkin, his manager).”

Question: If you could fight anywhere in the world where would it be?

Rios: “This is my third time fighting in Vegas and so I’d say Vegas. Everyone loves going to Vegas and everyone gets excited when you tell them you’re fighting in Vegas. I’ll fight anywhere. Just name the place; huge stadium, a little building. Just name it and I’ll be there. But Vegas is cool and it’s more like a party town and where I’d prefer to fight.”

Question: You grew up in Kansas but have lived in Oxnard the past six years. Do you consider yourself more a Kansan or Californian?

Rios: “I’m more a Californian now. Don’t get me wrong, my roots are in Kansas and my family is still there. That’s my hometown and where I lived all my life. I still represent and go back there and go to the gym and talk to the kids. I never forget my roots and where I came from but I consider myself a Californian now because I met my wife and got married here and her family is from here. I live here and my camp is here so I’m both. I’m half redneck and half Californian.”
