Third Annual Masters Clinic and Show

Gleason’s Gym will host it’s third annual Masters Clinic and boxing show February 17-19,2011.

Thursday morning will be the arrival into New York. Orientation will be from 12:00 noon to 1:oo pm. The first workout will be from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. A discussion on Masters boxing will be from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Free time after that.

Friday morning will have training from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon. The afternoon session will run from 2 pm to 4:00 pm. A discussion on Amateur boxing and White Collar boxing will be from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm. Free time after that.

Saturday morning will have light training from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon. Match ups for the evening show will take place from 12:00 noon to 1:00 pm. An optional workout for those not competing in the evening show from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. The weigh in for the show will be from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. The sanctioned Master Boxing Show will begin at 6:00 pm and will end by 10:00 pm.

Perez Headlines inaugural fight card in Lares February 4!

Newark, NJ (January 29, 2011) – Unbeaten lightweight Michael Angelo “The Artist” Perez of Newark, NJ will return to Puerto Rico on Friday, February 4 as part of the first ever fight card in the city of Lares at the Coliseo Felix Mendez Acevedo when he faces Marcos Herrera 6-3-1 (2 KO’s).

Telefutura will televise the highly anticipate evening of boxing at 11:30 pm ET as part of their “Solo Boxeo Tecate” series.

When the opening bell sounds, Perez, 11-0 (5 KO’s), will be less than two months removed from his December 10 eight round slugfest against Jose Hernandez. In that fight, his first scheduled for eight rounds, Perez dug deep to pull out a thrilling decision victory, leaving the capacity crowd in Agua, Buenas, Puerto Rico and fans watching at home on Telefutura on the edge of their seats throughout the contest.

While most fighters would take a considerable amount of time before returning to the squared circle following a grueling slugfest, the 2008 National Golden Gloves Champion feels it’s his duty to represent what he calls his second hometown.

“It’s a pleasure to be fighting in Lares,” said Perez, most of whose family members and friends live in Lares. “Everybody has been asking me when I was coming back to Puerto Rico and Golden Boy decided to promote another card here, so it was a natural fit. I’m really looking forward to putting on another great show for my loyal fans.”

Tense scenes between Saturday night’s line-up – limited tickets available on the door

Saturday night’s Prizefighter Light Heavyweights II live on Sky Sports 1, HD1 and 3D from Olympia, London promises to be a volatile affair after tensions ran high at today’s weigh-in.

The fighters gathered in the venue for the weigh-in on Friday afternoon, and as the Sky Sports cameras rolled, it was clear that the contenders could hardly wait to fight for the trophy and £32,000.

The head-to-heads between Travis Dickinson and Llewellyn Davies and Menay Edwards and Joe Smyth threatened to boil over with the fighters in the second and fourth quarter-finals needing to be separated by officials.

“You could feel the tension in the room – it was electric,” said Matchroom Sport managing director Eddie Hearn. “I would expect nothing less though as these guys have worked their socks off to get into top shape for the biggest night of their careers and seven of them are going to leave the venue empty-handed.”

One fighter who stayed out of the way was Liverpool veteran Tony Dodson, who said he was “too wise” for such action. Dodson’s trainer Oliver Harrison also looks after Davies and believes his two charges will meet in the final.

“Tony is looking very good,” said Harrison. “He’s got work to do on the night of course, he has to get out of the traps as he’s used to longer fights. If he sits back and wait he will get picked off, but he won’t be doing that – and I expect him to get through the quarter-final (against Michael Banbula) and onto the final from there.

“Llewellyn is in tremendous shape. He’s got a tough fight in Dickinson – arguably the hardest draw he could’ve got – but he has got everything you need to win this and I’m confident he will get to the final. If he does, I’ll be in the other corner with Tony, but I want Llewy to get there all the same.”

The opening quarter-final of the night pits Romford banger Billy Slate against Margate’s Jack Morris – but fight fans who want to see the action but haven’t got a ticket will have to get to south London early as only a handful of tickets will available, priced £50 ringside and £30 unreserved.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (Jan. 27, 2011) – The eight fighters who will compete this Saturday, Jan. 29, live on SHOWTIME® (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast) and STRIKEFORCE CEO Scott Coker participated Thursday in a final press conference for the eagerly awaited event at HP Pavilion.

Saturday’s event will be highlighted by a STRIKEFORCE World Championship Doubleheader. STRIKEFORCE World Welterweight Champion Nick Diaz (23-7, 1 NC) will seek his ninth consecutive victory when he makes his second title defense against Brazilian powerhouse Evangelista Cyborg (18-13) in the main event.

STRIKEFORCE World Middleweight Champion “Jacare” Souza (13-2, 1 NC) will put his belt on the line for the first time against hard-hitting, former two-time world champion “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler (18-6, 1 NC) in the co-feature of a stacked card.

The remarkable Herschel Walker (1-0) will return to the cage to face Scott Carson (4-1) in a heavyweight bout and undefeated Roger Gracie (3-0), the latest prospect from MMA’s first family, will battle former South African national wrestling champion Trevor Prangley (23-6-1) at light heavyweight (205 pounds).

The first non-televised, undercard fight on Saturday begins at 4:30 p.m. PT.

“I think he was fighting guys too big when he was fighting at middleweight, but I might be too big for him too. Anything can happen in a fight, but I prepare for everything.’’

“After 15 years of training and sacrificing, my dream is finally almost here. I am very excited at the chance to make my mark. I can promise you I will do my best to pull out the win.

“Nick Diaz is a very gallant fighter but I will press the action whether we are standing or on the ground.

Reigning MFC lightweight champ vows fistic fury against Fickett

Antonio McKee has the belt firmly in his grasp, but for his upcoming bout at MFC 28: Supremacy, he has a different perception than that of most defending champions.

While it has become routine for most reigning champs to take the approach that they are looking forward to putting their belt on the line and proving themselves to be a worthy champion, McKee has taken a slightly altered angle to his fast-approaching defense at MFC 28.

“He’s fighting for the title. I’m fighting to stay in the game,” said McKee in offering up his initial thoughts on the showdown with Drew “Night Rider” Fickett that will go down as the co-main event on Friday, Feb. 25 at the River Cree Resort and Casino, just outside Edmonton, Alberta, and live on HDNet Fights.

As far as his birth certificate goes, McKee, at the age of 40, is on the downside of his career. Yet when it comes to athleticism and the desire to compete, McKee is as sharp as he was when he rolled out eight wins in the first nine fights of a career that was launched in 1999.

The Lakewood, California, product is riding another high of late. For the first time in his career, he’s actually become a bit of a crowd favorite. True, he’s always been colorful without a doubt for his ability to hype a fight. Few in the business of mixed martial arts can sell a fight better. But popularity has never been something that McKee has been privy to.

But coming off a dynamic defense of his title, McKee has gained some measure of fan approval. And in his typically boisterous manner, McKee (25-4-2) has started to stoke the fire for his clash with Fickett (40-13), who will be riding a four-fight winning streak of his own into the encounter. Though he started with complimentary words on his opponent, McKee quickly poured gasoline on the slow-rising flames.

“I’m going to blast right through him. It’s not even going to be close … 10, 15 minutes tops,” stated McKee. “He doesn’t deal with pressure and strength real well, and my top game is really good now.”

Fight fans saw what happened the last time McKee put his top game to good use. At MFC 26, McKee’s title defense against Luciano Azevedo lasted a mere 3:11 as his sharp elbow strikes busted his Brazilian opponent wide open resulting in a TKO by doctor’s stoppage.

It was a side of McKee – unbridled, ultra-aggressive violence – that he has rarely displayed before. Though there’s a distaste that emanates from McKee when he discusses that aspect of himself and the sport, he has come to realize that the sort of vicious behavior he doesn’t care to exhibit just happens to be exactly what the fans want to see especially from a reigning champion.

McKee, who claimed the crown with a win over Derrick Noble at MFC 20, has come to terms with being more ferocious, and vowed that Fickett will get a dose of that venom come fight night.

“I’m going to start dropping elbows on him and he’s not going to know what hit him,” said McKee.

“He’s going to be on his ‘A’ game but that doesn’t bother me. I’ve seen everything he can do. There’s nothing that he can do that I won’t be ready for. He wants to come along and push me up against a wall, well, that just brings the best out of me.”

The McKee-Fickett showdown for the MFC lightweight title will share main-event status with the battle for the MFC light-heavyweight title between Dwayne “D-Bomb” Lewis and Ryan “The Big Deal” Jimmo. The remainder of the televised main card will include:

Lightweight – Richie Whitson vs. Kajan Johnson

Light-Heavyweight – Razak Al-Hassan vs. Rodney Wallace

Welterweight – Thomas Denny vs. Sheldon Westcott

Lightweight – Robert Washington vs. Tyrone Glover

Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Tim Sylvia meets “The Ultimate Fighter” veteran Abe Wagner in the Main Event – LIVE at 10:00 p.m. ET on HDNet
