Steve Goodwin celebrates his first year as a boxing promoter with two huge shows in March, the first, at York Hall in Bethnal Green, London on Saturday 5th March 2011, is headlined by Toks Owoh versus JJ Ojuderie and is supported by no less than fourteen bouts featuring the cream of the Capital’s upcoming young fighters.

On announcing the ‘Unleash The Fury’ event Steve Goodwin said, “The York Hall show, ‘Unleash The Fury’, on March 5th is a showcase for our boxers that are on the way up.

Our main show is at Dagenham on March 19th but we’ve got a lot of people that want to fight on our shows. Basically we’ve created a second show where we’re going to see a lot of upcoming talent, as well as a couple of boxers that have the potential to go to British and European championship level.

Toks Owoh will be headlining the show, he’s desperate to box Southern Area champion Leon Williams. He’s so desperate to fight Leon he says he’d do it for free because he wants to hurt him badly. He says he doesn’t want money for that. He’ll enjoy it. Unfortunately Leon’s got other arrangements, he’s on a Frank Maloney show in February.

Toks is hoping to put on a real good show on March 5th against JJ Ojuederie because he wants to show he can do a better job on JJ than Leon did. But he desperately wants to get Leon in the ring. Toks is after the British title, just the same as Leon is. That could be an interesting match up for later in 2011.

Also on the show we have the World Kick Boxing Champion, Llir Canolli from Cosavo. He’s very, very exciting to see. He is very well regarded and has been tipped to become a Boxing World Champion. So we’re very privileged for him to be coming over to fight on the show. He’s a true Cruiserweight prospect so we’re very excited to be seeing him.

I’m personally excited to see the come back of Michael Devine. He’s a very, very exciting come forward fighter. He lost in his last fight, on his 21st birthday, against Mark Alexander last year.

He took some time out and got himself back together. He’s working like a demon in the gym and I think this is the year we see Michael Devine progress through the ranks. Hopefully by December we’ll have Mark Alexander back in the ring with him so he can set the record straight.

It’s a big card, there will be fifteen bouts on the night. It’s going to be a big card, anything I am associated with I want to be known as giving value for money by the public and make sure that there is always a fantastic atmosphere and packed arenas.

It’s going to be a lot of four round fights with up and coming prospects. It’s going to be an exciting night of boxing. I’m really looking forward to it.”

Steve Goodwin’s ‘Unleash The Fury’ event at York Hall, Bethnal Green, London is headlined by a six round Cruiserweight contest between Toks Owoh versus JJ Ojuederie.

The huge fourteen bout undercard features some of London’s best upcoming talents and includes Ultrachem TKO’s ‘Dynamo’ Daryl Setterfield against Birmingham’s Andrew ‘Paddy’ Patterson.

Three Ultrachem TKO gym mates of Daryl Setterfield are also on the show, Light Heavyweight Joel ‘El Toro’ McIntyre, Light Middleweights Nathan Weise and Brett O’Callaghan, all against yet to be named opponents.

Also appearing on the show are Rainham Super Featherweight Richard Hines, Luton Lightweight Michael ‘Chunky’ Devine, unbeaten Biggleswade Light Middleweight Jamie Boness, Minster. ‘YOU KHAN’T BE SERIOUS?’ HEARN SLAMS AMIR’S “INSULTING” OFFER TO MCCLOSKEY

Irishman set for super-fight in Belfast as Khan contest falls through
Paul McCloskey’s promoter Barry Hearn accused Amir Khan of using his fighter to get a cheap World title defence after closing the book on their deal to fight in Manchester.

McCloskey and Khan were in negotiations to fight for Amir’s WBA Light-Welterweight belt at the MEN Arena on April 16 but with both parties failing to agree on terms for the fight, the 31 year-old will now turn his attention to his next fight.

McCloskey’s promoter Barry Hearn believes that Khan’s offer was “totally derisory” to his fighter, after the 24 year-old Bolton man and his people refused to budge on ticket sales commission and pay-per-view revenue shares. Hearn said that McCloskey would be a big ticket seller for the fight and he would also push pay-per-view sales in Northern Ireland and Ireland, but that Khan was unwilling to offer a fair share of money largely driven by McCloskey’s presence.

“Amir Khan lives in America and wants to earn a living popping over here
and underpaying British fighters,” said Hearn. “The deals placed on the table were an insult to Paul, an undefeated fighter and a European champion. Amir cannot fight himself, and I’m afraid you have to pay opponents to step in the ring with you, and pay them fairly.”

McCloskey claimed the European belt in November 2009 with a ninth round stoppage of Daniel Rasilla in County Londonderry and defended the title twice last year – an 11th round knockout of Giuseppe Lauri in June in Belfast followed by a seventh round stoppage of Barry Morrison in November in County Donegal.

The Morrison victory took McCloskey’s record to 22-0 with 12 knockouts and he is due to defend his European title soon. Hearn also said that he has a big night planned for the Northern Irishman in Belfast before warning Khan that they could one day fight on an even footing.

“We have a huge fight lined up for Paul at King’s Hall in the spring and who knows, not long down the line he could face Amir as a World Champion himself in a 50-50 split fight,” said Hearn.

Last April, Martinez captured WBC/WBO middleweight crowns, in just his second bout at the 160-pound weight class, with a dominating 12-round victory against Kelly Pavlik at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. Seven months later on November 20, Argentina native by way of Oxnard, California, returned to Boardwalk Hall to face Paul Williams in a rematch of his razor-thin majority decision loss, which was widely heralded as one of the best fights of 2009. Barry training KZ Event Quartet

LAS VEGAS (Jan. 26, 2011) – 1984 Olympic Silver Medalist Kevin Barry is training a unique, talented quartet of boxers from Kazakhstan, featuring WBA/IBA Light Heavyweight Champion Beibut Shumenov, and Uzbekistan out of his gym, Team Barry Boxing, in Henderson, Nevada.

Shumenov (11-1, 7 KOs) and light welterweight Alexandr Zhuravskiy (10-0, 8 KOs) are Kazakhstan natives, while WBA No. 6 light heavyweight Gayrat Ahmedov (16-0-1, 10 KOs) and WBA No. 13 welterweight Ravshan Hudaynazarov (14-0, 12 KOs), are from Uzbekistan. All four members of this unique foursome now live in Las Vegas, where they’re trained by Barry, who guided heavyweight title challenger David Tua for 12 years.

Shumenov owns and operates the Las Vegas-based KZ Event Productions along with his brother, Chingis.Zhuravskiy, Ahmedov and Hudaynazarov are promoted by KZ Event Productions and Beibut is a hands-on promoter, guiding their careers as a promoter/fighter, as well as in terms of training, fight preparation, and selecting opponents.

Shumenov, the 2004 Kazakhstan Olympian, and New Zealander Barry have developed a special relationship in the past 12 months, including Beibut’s WBA title-winning performance against defending champion Gabriel Campillo and two successful title-defenses versus mandatory, previously unbeaten Vlacheslav Uzelkov and 3-time world champion William Joppy. Shumenov holds the record for fewest fights (10) to capture a major world light heavyweight title.

“Training Beibut for only two months going into his second fight against Campillo,” Barry explained, “I didn’t know how much of a difference it would make but with Beibut’s exceptional abilities and willingness to learn it was enough. We had more time working together for the Uzelkov fight and he showed tremendous improvement. After a full year I know my fighter: he is much more accomplished, better skilled, and he’s made huge improvements in his abilities. Beibut is more comfortable and polished and he has grown into his role the last 12 months.

“Originally, I had said give me 5-6 fights to see what type of fighter Beibut is. We’ve now had three fights together and his conditioning has improved greatly. He has better balanced and understands distance in fights. He’s gone from a primarily 1-2 puncher into one with extensive energy and an arsenal of weapons. Beibut is comfortable throwing and landing blows to any part of his opponent’s body. He has also grown into a world champion; confident in himself, and he shows more maturity than many fighters with more years in this business. As a fighter, he has grown a lot in 12 months, winning the WBA title in only his 10th fight and defending it in grand fashion against Uzelkov and under difficult circumstances against Joppy. It’s incredible that he’s made all of these accomplishments having turned pro only three years ago.

“Beibut challenges himself by setting high goals and he will still continue to improve. I said I needed 5-6 fights to see what type of fighter he is but, by then, he may unify all of the belts. Beibut is very driven and the sky’s the limit for him. He believes there’s nothing he can’t do. I’m excited about what he’s done in the past 12 months. Under the circumstances, I thought Beibut’s performance against Joppy was incredible. After (WBO champion Juergen) Braemher pulled out, in my opinion, like a coward in the middle of the night without telling anybody, Beibut was in a fight I didn’t like because he was fighting a last-minute replacement with a lot of experience (Joppy). Mentally and emotionally, I was concerned because he was deflated and he had to get back up in only three days. Everything worked out well for us. He is taking the right steps to be a star in the future.”

Barry also broke-down the other trio of defeated fighters he trains — Ahmedov, Interim PABA and WBA International Light Heavyweight Champion; Hudaynazarov, WBA FEDALATIN Welterweight Champion; and Zhuravskiy, WBA International Super Lightweight Champion.

“Gayrat is a strong, durable fighter who is a terrific body puncher. He has heavy hands and we’re working to get him throwing more punches. Ravshan has phenomenal output. He throws 6 to 10 punches at a time and he’s a devastating body puncher. Body punches take more out of a fighter than head shots and Ravshan loves hitting the body. They can’t shake-off his body punches. He has developed into a seasoned fighter who has gone around gyms in Las Vegas beating-up most guys. Ravshan is legitimate. His progress has been very exciting. Alex, I’ve only had two months with but he is a real exciting prospect. He is a very strong, tough fighter who’s a huge 140-pounder. You would think he’s a 154-pounder — he’s bigger than Ravshan! Alex is a southpaw with a great amateur background. He is a good puncher who loves to fight. He is more like Beibut than Gayrat or Ravshan. You can never ask him to do too much. Picture an old-school Russian fighter and that’s what he looks like with that great work ethic. He didn’t speak a word of English when he got here but he’s very disciplined and listens to me and my assistant coach, Dewey Cooper.”

Despite working with four foreign-born fighters, Barry insists that there are no communication barriers because all of them now speak English, maybe not as fluent as Beibut, but more than enough to understand what they have to do. Beibut also speaks Russian, Kazak, Turkish and Uzbekistan; Uzbekistan and Russian for Gayrat, Ravshan only Uzbekistan, and Zhuravskiy speaks Russian and Kazak.

“Boxing has a universal language – signs and showing what we mean — that all of us understand,” Barry concluded. “Ravshan’s improvement speaking English is out of sight. Beibut has made the transition so much easier for me by translating in order to explain small details to them. He has been instrumental taking part in their careers as a leader for them to follow. Beibut sets the standard and the others try and keep up with him.”

Austin “No Doubt” Trout Training in the Mountains of New Mexico

January 26, 2011 – Undefeated light middleweight sensation, Austin “No Doubt” Trout (21-0, 13 KO’s), gears up for the biggest fight of his life when he travels to Mexico to challenge Rigoberto Alvarez (26-2, 19 KO’s) on February 5, 2011, for the vacant WBA World light middleweight title. The fight was originally scheduled to place at the Sergio Leon Chávez Soccer Stadium in Irapuato, Guanajuato Mexico, but has been moved to Guadalajara according to Trout.

Essex man wants trophy gift-wrapped on Saturday

Essex fighter Billy Slate celebrated his 29th birthday yesterday (25 January) but said the champagne is ice until he lifts the Prizefighter Light Heavyweights II crown on Saturday in London live on Sky Sports 1 and HD1 and in 3D for the first time.

Slate takes on Margate’s Jack Morris in the opening quarter-final of the 16th edition of Matchroom Sport’s eight-man, one –night tournaments, and the Romford hitter has shunned marking his birthday with family and friends in order to scoop the £32,000 winner’s cheque.

“My birthday has been cancelled this year, just like Christmas and New Year was,” said Slate – unbeaten from his first two pro fights. “I’m in fight mode now so the celebrating can wait until after Olympia – the trophy will be a perfect present and the party will be big if I win.”

Slate was featured in the Matchroom Sport preview show Prizefighter: Last Man Standing that aired on Sky Sports earlier in the week, but said that in the build up to a fight, he prefers to stay out of the limelight.
“I don’t want to be around anyone at all really – I’m pretty anti-social before a fight to be honest,” said Slate. “Normally I love it when the cameras are out I’m on a night out or the video camera at Christmas.
When it comes to the boxing though I’m a little bit different but with something as big as Prizefighter you have got to do it and get on with it so it’s been good.”

Should Slate get past Morris he could face unbeaten Coventry fighter Llewellyn Davies in the second semi-final – if Davies can see off unbeaten joint-favourite Travis Dickinson in quarter-final two. Davies has stoked the fires of that potential clash, saying that Slate was the only man he didn’t click with at the recent Sky Sports promo day.

“When we went to the studios, he was moaning about having to sit around in between interviews and I told him: ‘This is a chance of a lifetime. You could be a star,” Davies told Matt Bozeat in the Coventry Telegraph. “But he didn’t seem to understand. He was the only one I didn’t get on with.”

On the other side of the draw, the two most experienced fighters on the bill meet in the third quarter-final as former British champion Tony Dodson faces Surrey-based Pole Michael Banbula. The winner of that bout will face either unbeaten Kent boxer Menay Edwards or St Albans 7-1 man Joe Smyth.
