NEW YORK (Jan. 17, 2011) – In a vitally important fight that will bring the winner one step closer to challenging for a world title, undefeated rising star Lyle “Fancy Pants” Beerbohm will face dangerous veteran Pat “Bam Bam’’ Healy in the main event of a STRIKEFORCE Challengers Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fight card presented by Rockstar Energy Drink at Cedar Park Center in the Austin, Tex. suburb of Cedar Park on Friday, Feb. 18, live on SHOWTIME® at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).

Beerbohm, of Spokane, Wash., will enter what will be a dangerous-for-both-fighters lightweight (155 pounds) scrap with a record of 15-0. Healy, of St. Louis, is 25-17.

The first non-televised, undercard fight will begin at 7:30 p.m. CT. Doors will open at 6:45 p.m. .

Both Beerbohm and Healy are highly skilled 155-pounders who are trying to position themselves to contend for a possible shot at STRIKEFORCE World Champion Gilbert “El Nino” Melendez.

The experienced Healy has faced top quality opposition and is no stranger to a big fight. He showed his ability and tremendous determination in his last start, pushing former STRIKEFORCE World Lightweight Champion Josh Thomson to the limit before getting submitted (rear-naked choke) at 4:27 of the third and final scheduled round on June 26, 2010, on SHOWTIME.
All Beerbohm has done is win convincingly.

Beerbohm will be making his fourth start for STRIKEFORCE and his main event debut. This will be his initial appearance on SHOWTIME. In his last outing for STRIKEFORCE, Beerbohm won a split-decision over four-time Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world champion Vitor “Shaolin” Ribeiro on May 15, 2010. It was only the second time one of Beerbohm’s fights went the distance.

A 5-foot-10, three-year pro, Beerbohm, who turns 32 on Feb. 5, has since fought twice, both in his home state of Washington. He is coming off a 2:48, first-round submission (guillotine choke) over Talon Hoffman on Dec. 4, 2010.

Beerbohm literally began his pro career after serving 366 days at the Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla as a result of felony convictions, all related to a crystal meth addiction. The day he was freed from prison, he visited a Jiu-Jitsu gym. He had his first amateur fight eight days after being released.

Since entering MMA, Beerbohm has found a discipline and determination that was missing in his life. “If I didn’t go to prison, I probably would be dead today,” he said. “Because I wouldn’t get cleaned up. I wouldn’t go to rehab. I wouldn’t get off the drugs. I didn’t want to get off the drugs. (Finally) I traded one addiction for the other. I traded meth for MMA.”

A top wrestler in high school, Beerbohm is a brawler who can switch between southpaw and orthodox stances. He went 12-0 in the amateurs, in spite of the obstacles he had to overcome. Although the vast majority of his fights have ended early and he’s recorded more KO’s than submissions, he still considers himself a grappler.

Beerbohm, whose nickname is derived from the custom-made, multi-colored trunks sewn by his mother, owns wins over former world Muay Thai champion and STRIKEFORCE and UFC veteran Duane “Bang’’ Ludwig as well as UFC vet Rafaello Oliveira. Beerbohm submitted (bulldog choke) Ludwig in the first round of a non-televised fight at a STRIKEFORCE Challengers event on June 19, 2009.

“I want to fight the best, I want to fight for the STRIKEFORCE title,’’ said Beerbohm, the head of Washington’s Fancy Pants Fight Team. “All I can do is continue to work hard and beat who they put in front of me. This is going to be a very difficult fight for both of us, but I’m confident of winning and moving up the ranks.

“I am very anxious to fight on SHOWTIME and show the fans and STRIKEFORCE what I can do. My goal is to fight for the world title. I want to be the champ. I want a five-round fight. That would be something else.’’

A member of Team Quest, Healy has been an active MMA fighter for nearly a decade. He’s ousted big-name, quality opponents all over the world since turning pro in August 2001, including Paul “Semtex’’ Daley, Carlos Condit and Dan Hardy.

The accomplished veteran is 1-1 in STRIKEFORCE. Before the Thomson tussle, Healy scored an impressive unanimous decision over Bryan Travers (13-1 going in) during a STRIKEFORCE Challengers event on May 21, 2010. It was a rare points victory for the well-conditioned, durable wrestling specialist who has won more than half his fights via submission.

Healy has won three of his last four bouts, and six of eight. “I was disappointed I didn’t quite get it done the last time, but I appreciate getting another opportunity against an up-and-coming fighter,’’ Healy said. “This fight is obviously very important to me. I’ll enter the cage with a lot of confidence.’’

Healy got his start in MMA at the age of 15, shortly after he and a brother stood up to a neighborhood bully and Muay Thai practitioner. Following the altercation, Pat wanted to learn more about technical fighting and sought out MMA gyms for formal training.

To supplement his MMA training regimen, he wrestled in high school, gaining All State accolades and eventually went on to wrestle at Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville. Following college, Pat knew that he had the potential to do something great and devoted himself fulltime to an MMA career.

Healy believes that cardio is his strength and that it allows him to pressure and break his opponents mentally.

USA Wrestling Unveils NEW TV Program, USA Wrestling Weekly

USA Wrestling Weekly broadcast to air updated news and features every week

USA Wrestling Weekly, a new half-hour news broadcast, will be produced on a weekly basis starting last week.

It is presented in a news format, and will provide updated information on USA Wrestling activities, as well as a variety of feature segments.

The show is moderated by veteran wrestling broadcaster Scott Casber and is scheduled for distribution each Friday.

“USA Wrestling is extremely excited about this new product,” said USA Wrestling Executive Director Rich Bender.” We are confident it will provide an additional platform to promote athletes and tell the USA Wrestling story worldwide.”

The first episode was released last Friday, and will be available for viewing on TheMat.com, which is USA Wrestling’s website. It will also be posted on USA Wrestling’s YouTube Channel and archived on USA Wrestling’s UStream Channel.

In addition, USA Wrestling Weekly will be offered to a variety of websites, and will also be available to television networks across the nation.

News items about USA Wrestling will be extensive, including updates on Team USA, international and national events, new and exciting programs and much more. Included in many of these news reports will be video footage and audio clips.

Regular features will also be included in the show. The Wrestling Greats segment will tell the story of a past or present American wrestling star, featuring action footage. The Technique segment will provide quality instruction on wrestling moves and strategy designed to help current wrestlers to improve their performance.

USA Wrestling staff will participate extensively in creating the content for the show.

The production of USA Wrestling Weekly is handled by Takedown Wrestling Media, which produces a variety of other wrestling and sports broadcast products. The Lead Producer for the show is Shawn Van Leeuwen of Takedown Wrestling Media.

Matt “Sharp Shooter” Remillard signs with Top Rank

MANCHESTER, Conn. (January 17, 2011) – Undefeated, 24-year-old NABF and NABO champion Matt “Sharp Shooter” Remillard (23-0, 13 KOs), arguably America’s leading featherweight, has signed an exclusive promotional contract with Top Rank.

“Matt is a tremendous, exciting fighter, “Hall of Fame promoter and Top Rank CEO Bob Arum said. “We are very pleased he has joined our organization. Matt will get a lot of national exposure while fighting for Top Rank.”

Oshinronde Set To Face ‘Mr KO’ Smyle At York Hall, 22nd Jan

Dollis Hill based American boxer Emmanuel ‘Manny’ Oshinronde is set for his second UK fight this coming Saturday, the 22nd January, at the Graham Earl promoted ‘Capital Punishment’ event at the York Hall in Bethnal Green, London, which is headlined by the BBBofC Southern Area Super Middleweight title clash between Portsmouth’s Paul Morby and Essex’s Daniel ‘The Slick’ Cadman.

29 year old Manny will be facing a tough challenge, on the 22nd, as he will be up against Leicester knockout artist Jahmaine ‘Smasher’ Smyle. Without doubt Manny will have to be on his best form as Jahmaine, who has a 3 win and 1 loss record, has stopped all but one of his previous opponents.

Manny, from Miami in Florida, originally came to Europe in 2007 as he had a professional Basketball contract to play in Italy. Manny spent a season and half playing in Italy but due to a long running knee injury problem, that affected the high level performance he was accustomed to, decided to retire from Basketball in 2009 and move to England and return to his first sporting love, Boxing.

Following a training session, under the watchful eyes of upcoming young coach Barry Smith at Johnny Eames’ Ultrachem TKO Gym in Canning Town, London, Manny spoke of the upcoming showdown with Jahmaine Smyle, “I’m looking very much to the fight because hopefully it’ll be my first win.

My last fight was quite disappointing because I lost, but I really should have won. I had the guy down in the second round but he was saved by the bell.

That’s the problem if you don’t put your guy away, he’ll come back and beat ya. I think I took the guy a little bit too lightly and he crept up and bit me in the butt.

Plus I had a lot of injuries but don’t feel I can make too many excuses though, when you’re up in the ring you have to be ready.

This fight, hopefully, will go the way I want it to go, which is win by knockout. So I’m really looking forward to my first win in the UK.

Sparring’s been going pretty good. I’ve been sparring Mitchell (Balker) from the TKO Gym. I’ve sparred him a couple of times. He’s a big, strong Cruiserweight. I’ve also sparred a couple of guys at Clinton McKenzie’s gym in South London. Pretty good Super Middleweights and Light Heavyweights.”

Emmanuel ‘Manny’ Oshinronde versus Jahmaine ‘Smasher’ Smyle will be on the undercard of Paul Morby vs. Daniel ‘The Slick’ Cadman BBBofC Southern Area Super Middleweight title showdown at the Graham Earl promoted ‘Capital Punishment’ event at York Hall, Bethnal Green, London on Saturday 22nd January 2011.

Graham Earl has put together a top class support card for the Morby vs Cadman title fight that includes the first London outing for Ultrachem TKO’s highly exciting Dutch Cruiserweight prospect Mitchell Balker, who is set for a baptism of fire when he faces Battersea’s super tough Fighting Fireman Nick ‘The Ox’ Okoth, who was runner up at the exceptional Sky televised Prizefighter – Cruiserweights II back in April last year.

Another exciting young fighter from the Ultrachem TKO stable, Welterweight Danny ‘Cassius’ Connor, also has a tough challenge when he faces Graham Earl’s nineteen year old protégé Terry Holmes.

British Masters Light Welterweight Champion Jay ‘The Isle Of Wight Assassin’ Morris, will be taking on another of the Ultrachem TKO team, ‘Dynamo’ Daryl Setterfield, in a non-championship bout.

Hove’s unbeaten Light Heavyweight Navid Iran also has a challenging bout as he faces the very tough Mansfield, Notts, based Latvian Alex ‘Pit Bull’ Spitko.

Don’t blink or you might just miss Joe ‘The Belfast Banger’ Hillerby take on Ryan Clarke. In his last fight Joe stopped Gavin Putney in just 43 seconds! But saying that you can’t write off Ryan easily, as he is also known as a super tough big puncher.

New Milton’s ‘Dangerous’ Danny Goode will be looking to turn around his losing streak when he faces Chris Agyia-Dua. Danny had built up an impressive unbeaten in twelve fight record, that was until he met Jay Morris in December 2007. Since then Danny has lost seven in a row.

Also on the show will be Danny Brown against a yet to be named opponent.
