Highly touted lightweight will make debut against Glover

One of the brightest lightweight prospects in all of mixed martial arts has signed with the Maximum Fighting Championship and will make his organizational debut at MFC 28: Supremacy.

Robert “The Beast” Washington (9-1), who is a member of the Matt Hughes-led H.I.T. Squad, has agreed to a multi-fight deal, and he jumps right into the mix by squaring off against Tyrone “T$” Glover (5-0) on Friday, Feb. 25 on HDNet Fights (10 p.m. ET/8 p.m. MT/7 p.m. PT – check local listings for channel designation).

“I think every fighter’s goal should be to become a champion,” stated Washington. “I’ve never had the chance to be a champion and the biggest goal of my life is to fight for a belt. I want to be the best 155-pounder in the world and I train for that every day. I’m super excited to be in the MFC where I will get the chance to make that happen.”

It has been tough sledding for Washington to reach this point in his career, but he has ably managed a full-time job, being a single father, and developing his fight skills. While he is now solely focused on fighting, Washington’s early bout schedule and training were entwined with his role as a petty officer second-class with the United States Navy. The East St. Louis, Illinois, native originally got his feet wet in MMA while stationed in Guam, and then further immersed himself while anchored in San Diego where he also began a three-year stint with the Navy wrestling team.

“It took a lot of sacrifice,” Washington explained of his early foray into the sport. “I had to be at work with the Navy at 7:30 in the morning so I trained from 5 until 7:15. Then I’d be at work until 5 and then back to train from 5:30 to 7 at night – Monday through Friday. I never took any vacation. My vacation days were used to travel for my fights.”

The 27-year-old remains a member of the Navy reserves though now his focus is squarely on taking his abilities in the ring to a higher level. He’ll get a good test of his game against Glover, who himself is a highly touted prospect.

“He’s got a similar wrestling background. He’s got some very good jiu-jitsu but I’m not afraid to go to the ground with him,” Washington detailed. “I’m not going to shoot right in on him but I think I’ll be fine if it goes to the ground because he won’t be able to hold me down.

“But I wouldn’t mind keeping it standing with him. I think my striking is at a level where I can go toe-to-toe with him. I think it’s a good matchup and it’s going to be an exciting fight.”

Glover, who also recently inked a multi-fight contract to join the MFC’s lightweight ranks, echoed his high anticipation for the bout.

“He’s a tough opponent. I’ll be there on February 25th to throw down and put on a good show for the fans,” added Glover.

Fight Foundation Uganda

Fight Foundation Uganda is a non-profit Organization that promotes the fostering of Boxing talent among the youth of Uganda. The Foundation strives to promote youth Boxing at the grassroots level, right from the village level, schools, and communities, all with the aim of molding these pupils into future world-class professional pugilists representing Uganda.

Back Story:

Uganda has produced some the World’s best boxers from the likes of Kassim ‘’The Dream” Ouma to Justin Jukko, Jackson “Action” Asiku, Ayub Kalule, John “The Beast” Mugabi, Godfrey Nyakaana, Joseph “The African Express’’ Kiwanuka, Bosa Edwards, Fred Muteweta… to the current upcoming crop of professionals like Sharif Bogere, Badru Lusambya, and Peter Semogerere, who all came from humble backgrounds to rise to stardom.

Unfortunately, in spite of this massive talent in the Country, no efforts have been undertaken by government and other concerned parties to groom and nurture more young talents right from the grass roots. Boxing equipment and Gyms continue to remain a privilege of the urban dwellers. Even the few gyms around more rural areas are poorly equipped.

It was with this grim background that The Fight Foundation was formed in 2008 in Kampala, Uganda, not only to cover the gap but to also build future Boxers right from the grassroots in Uganda. The Foundation was initiated by boxing fan Mr. Kiwalabye Ronald and former professional boxer Mr. Nsamba Asanasio.

Mission:

Our Mission is to produce future world class boxers for Uganda through the identification, nurturing and developing of young boxing talent at the grassroots level.

Vision:

Our vision is a Uganda where young people talented in boxing can easily access the sport at any time without having to travel great distances or pay large fees.

Objectives of the Foundation:

i) To groom future world class boxers for Uganda right from the local communities.

ii) To change peoples’ perceptions on boxing since many still regard it as a rough sport only meant for school drop-outs.

iii) To promote women’s boxing and women boxers in Uganda.

iv) To identify, harness and develop young boxing talent right from the grassroots in Uganda.

v) To undertake community, regional and national boxing competitions in the country.

vi) To set up a Boxing Academy in Uganda for nurturing boxing talent.

Programs:

All our programs are geared at not only promoting boxing at the local level, but also building a broader spectrum of programs that take gender issues into consideration by including girls and women in our clinics and training programs.

Our Boxing Programs include:

1) Community Boxing Clinics:

These are geared at promoting boxing at the community level in Uganda, especially in areas with no boxing facilities like Gyms. Youths and children interested in boxing converge on such centers and are trained in the science of boxing.

2) Lions Boxing Club: (LBC):

The Lions Boxing Club was formed in 2009 as the brain child of the Fight Foundation. It was formed after the realization that training future pugilists alone without competition was not enough. Competition in different weight categories was necessary for the youngsters to fully master the sport.

Boxers in LBC Compete in the Schools National Championship, the Juniors National Championships, Novices, Intermediary and the national Open Championships. Our Boxers are now competing in the Novices National Championships.

3) Women’s’ Boxing:

Women’s boxing is one of our core programs aimed at bringing women on board in the boxing arena. We currently have 5 women boxers and a number of young girls are slowly getting attracted to the sport

4) Schools’ Holiday Program:

This targets school children in both junior and secondary levels. Our training ground at Kamwokya playground is always a centre of attraction for the school kids who are given basic skills in boxing.

5) Building Character thorough Boxing:

Fight Foundation also applies the science of Boxing to instill character into young people. To be an accomplished boxer one needs to be hard working, resilient, disciplined and very determined. We use boxing to instill in our students the values of diligence, resilience, discipline and determination.

6) Non Formal Education for Boxers:

Many times some boxers might fail to to succeed in boxing due to constraints like injury, limited talent and age which might hinder their progress in the sport. The non formal Education for boxers was hence established in 2009 to equip boxers with skills in vocational studies like Carpentry, Creative Art and Poultry farming as an alternative plan in case boxers don’t succeed in making sustainable funds from participating in the sport, or in the case that they must retire early from boxing with limited savings.

Our Camp in Kamuli Village, Wakiso District offers no–cost vocational training to our youths in Carpentry and woodwork, Creative Art and Poultry Farming. This is also intended for boxers to have work after retiring form Boxing.

DODSON: PRIZEFIGHTER VICTORY IS JUST THE START

Liverpool fighter still has plenty in the tank for Olympia showdown
Tony Dodson has laughed off suggestions that Prizefighter is his last shot at glory – saying victory at Olympia in London on January 29 will be the catalyst for another major title tilt.

The Liverpool boxer is one of the favourites for the 16th edition of Matchroom Sport’s eight-man, one-night tournaments and after title fight defeats to local rivals Tony Quigley and Paul Smith in his last two bouts, the temptation is there for pundits to say it’s now or never for The Warrior.

But the 30 year-old says believes he has more than a decade left in the game and that lifting the Prizefighter trophy live on Sky Sports – and in 3D for the first time – will propel him to another shot at a major belt.

“I appreciate that people will say ‘oh this is Dodson’s last chance, he’s getting on now,’ but come on, I’ve only just turned 30, I’m not that old and certainly not when you put me next to Bernard Hopkins and people like that, boxing at the top level in their mid-40s,” said Dodson. “They’ll also say ‘he’s only going in it for the money’ – let them, I don’t care – if the other lads in the line-up think that, that’s great.”

Dodson is a fighter who relishes the big occasion after his high profile tussles with Quigley and Smith and a showdown with Carl Froch in Nottingham – something that should stand him in good stead against a field of hungry young fighters appearing in front of the biggest crowd of their careers.

“Being one of the favourites won’t affect me at all, I find it quite flattering really – it’s an honour that people think that I can win and take it as a positive,” said Dodson. “I’ve stood the test of time in boxing and fought at the top of the bill in some big nights, been in some of the toughest situations you can in the game with cuts and so on, and I’m still here so nothing fazes me. I’m a full-time boxer, it’s what I’ve chosen to do and it’s the only thing I’ve got so every fight and opportunity I get is a bonus and I thrive on it.

“After the Smith fight I sat down and had a good think and talked to my Dad and I said that I’m 29, I don’t want to be sitting round for that time now and waiting for it to happen, I want to be getting in and carrying on at the highest level. The only way to get to become the number one challenger fast is to win Prizefighter and that’s what I plan to do,” he added.

With 31 fights to his name, Dodson is the second most experienced fighter in the line-up – with Surrey-based Polish fighter Michael Banbula entering the tournament on the back of a five-fight unbeaten record, the best run of his 40-fight career.

Four young unbeaten fighters are aiming to grab their big chance to leap to the top of the queue for title shots in the division. 22 year-old Travis Dickinson – younger brother of Cruiserweights II winner Jon-Lewis – has three knockouts under his belt from his seven wins so far, with his first victory coming against Super-Middleweights champ Patrick Mendy when the pair made their debuts back in March 2009.

Former Wales amateur captain Llewellyn Davies has five wins to his name with three KOs, 26 year-old Kent fighter Menay Edwards has four wins from his first four fights with one knockout and popular Romford man Billy Slate in undefeated after his opening two fights as he kicks off his career at 28.

St. Albans boxer Joe Smyth will be aiming to build on a 7-1 record and Jack Morris was recently confirmed as the final fighter in the line-up and has revenge in his sights as the only defeat in his six-fight career came in his debut against Banbula.

Connor’s first outing of the year sees him up against Graham Earl’s protégé Terry Holmes at the former World Champion boxer turned promoter’s ‘Capital Punishment’ show, headlined by Paul Morby’s defense of his Southern Area Super Middleweight title against Daniel ‘The Slick’ Cadman, at the York Hall in Bethnal Green, London on Saturday 22nd January 2011.

Following a brutal sparring session with Sam Standing at Johnny Eames’ Ultrachem TKO Boxing Gym in Canning Town, ‘Cassius’ took a little time to talk about his upcoming showdown with Holmes. “I’m up against a guy called Terry Holmes, from Stevenage.

He’s a traveling kid so he’s bred into boxing. He’s going to be a tough come forward type and he’s supposed to be a bit of a good boxer who likes to mix it up a bit, but then again I can mix it up. I can fight just as good as him, if not better.

He’s 1 and 0, but he beat Johnny Greaves, who’s a bit of a journeyman. No disrespect to Johnny Greaves but we all know what journeymen are there for.

I’m not a journeyman I am on my way up and this is going to be my year so this is the start of something big and I’m taking him out.

I’ve been sparring Sam Standing, he’s another pro that’s just turned over. Been doing a little bit with Ricky Boylan, I’ve also been doing my sprints and that with him.

I’ve also been sparing with Southern Area champ Ben Murphy, he’s an experienced pro who can really bring me on. He knows all the tricks of the trade.

It’s the best sparring you can get so everything is going brilliant and I can’t wait to get in there and show everyone what I am about with this fight.

It’s gonna be a stoppage. I’m not messing about I’m just gonna knock him out. I’m going to start the year in style.”

Carina Moreno vs. Yesica Bopp for WBO & WBA Titles

January 10, 2011 – Former four-time world champion, Carina “La Reina” Moreno (21-2, 6 KO’s), returns to the ring to face Argentina’s undefeated light flyweight champion Yesica Yolanda Bopp (13-0, 5 KO’s) on January 29, 2010. Moreno has agreed to travel to Bopp’s native land of Argentina as the bout is set to take place in Monte Hermoso, Buenos Aires. On the line will be Bopp’s WBA and WBO titles.

Moreno feels she is ready to compete at the highest level as she stated, “It’s been over a year since my last fight and I feel the time off has given me new life. Sparring has been great and my timing is improving. I know traveling to Argentina, fighting Bopp in her hometown will be to her advantage, but my goal is to go over there and dominate. I’m hungry and I’m ready to fight. My main objective is to win and become a multiple world champion once again.”

After a fourteen month layoff, Moreno’s trainer Rick Noble believes she will be ready come fight night as he went on to say, “Each day we spar Carina is getting better and better. The snap on her punches is coming back and her footwork is fantastic. I really believe the ring rust won’t be a factor when we step into the ring. Everyone knows when you travel to another country to fight someone in their own hometown, it’s very difficult to win a decision. My only concern is that we get fair judging.”

Yesica Bopp vowed to knockout Carina as the two were supposed to fight last year. “When I read an article last year that Bopp said she would knockout Carina we really wanted to make this fight in 2010,” said Noble. “But for reasons out of our control the fight never happened. If Bopp really thinks she can knockout Carina, then she’ll be in for a rude awakening.”

F/X Network has the Best New TV Show of New Season

The show, LIGHTS OUT, starring Holt McCallany debuts on Tuesday, January 11, 2011.

Do not miss this show. It’s the next big Hit on TV. Everyone will be talking about it.

FX and Gleason’s Gym will host a “Debut” party starting at 9:00 PM on Tuesday, 1/11/11 at the gym. Attendance is by invitation only. The gym will close for workouts at 8:30 PM.

The first show for the 2011 Gleason’s Gym monthly boxing series will be January 15, 2011.

The show is open to any registered amateur. This includes Juniors, Seniors and Master boxers. There will be both male and female bouts.

The weigh in will begin at 4:00PM and the first bout will begin at 6:00PM.

All our bouts are pre-matched. They are sanctioned by USABoxingMetro. All boxers must have their boxing book with them in order to participate.

The ticket price is $20 per person. Children 6 and under are not charged. All gym members and registered amateurs with their books in hand pay $15 per person.

Personal Trainers-Boxing Certification Clinic

Gleason’s Gym will host the first Boxing Certification Clinic for Personal Trainers. January 27, 28 and 29,2011.

There will be two days of boxing basics followed by a certification clinic and certification.

The training will be done by Gleason’s top ranked trainers and Hall of Fame boxers.

The certification clinic will be held by USABoxing the sanctioning body for amateur boxing in The United States.

Gleason’s Own Keisher “Fire” McLeod- Wells Returns to the ring

Fire will fight in her first six round bout on February 9, 2011. The fight is being promoted by DiBella Entertainment and is part of his New York Boxing Series.

The show will be at BB King Blues Club and Grill, located at 237 W. 42nd St., New York City.

Third Annual Masters Clinic and Show

Gleason’s Gym will host it’s third annual Masters Clinic and boxing show February 17-19,2011.

Thursday morning will be the arrival into New York. Orientation will be from 12:00 noon to 1:oo pm. The first workout will be from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. A discussion on Masters boxing will be from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Free time after that.

Friday morning will have training from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon. The afternoon session will run from 2 pm to 4:00 pm. A discussion on Amateur boxing and White Collar boxing will be from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm. Free time after that.

Saturday morning will have light training from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon. Match ups for the evening show will take place from 12:00 noon to 1:00 pm. An optional workout for those not competing in the evening show from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. The weigh in for the show will be from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm. The sanctioned Master Boxing Show will begin at 6:00 pm and will end by 10:00 pm.

All Female Boxing Clinic

Gleason’s Gym will host the first All Female Boxing Clinic on April 28, 29 and 30, 2011.

There will be two days of boxing basics followed by a sanctioned amateur boxing show.

The amateur show will be sanctioned by USA Amateur Boxing.
