Former world champ Alejandro Berrio goes all in with Boxing 360

NEW YORK (Dec. 15, 2010) – Colombian power puncher Alejandro “Naco” Berrio, former IBF Super Middleweight Champion, has signed an exclusive promotional contract with Boxing 360 and proved how serious he is about recharging his career that he moved to New York City.

“We’re excited to have Alejandro Berrio onboard,” Boxing 360 Founder and CEO Mario Yagobi said. “We’re going to have him campaign as a super middleweight and he’ll be fighting for the first time under our banner January 13 in Oklahoma.”

Berrio (31-5, 28 KOs), who stopped previously unbeaten and present WBO titlist Robert Stieglitz 3 ½ years ago to capture the IBF crown, now lives in Queens and trains in the Bronx.

“I signed with Boxing 360 because Mario believes in me,” Berrio said. “I’m motivated by his company. I want to be world champion again. I’ll take it one fight at a time but all I need is one opportunity. Today’s fighters choose who they fight. I’m a real fighter, a throwback who will fight anybody. I’ll adapt to any opponent that gets in the ring with me. I wasn’t prepared when I fought Bute. I’ll fight anybody but Bute is one fighter I really want to get in the ring with again.”

Seven years into his pro career, Berrio knocked out Carl Handy (19-4-2) in the right round to capture the IBO Inter-Continental Light Heavyweight Championship. Next up was a ninth-round stoppage of Syd Vanderpool, setting up a showdown against 27-0 Stieglitz in Germany. Stieglitz won by 11th round TKO in their 2005 IBF Super Middleweight Eliminator.

The resourceful Berrio won a stay busy fight before taking on another undefeated fighter, 22-0-2 Yusaf Mack, who Alejandro put to sleep in the sixth round. In early 2007, Berrio was matched against Stieglitz, currently the WBO 168-pound champion, in Germany for the vacant IBF strap. Berrio was at his best as he dropped Stieglitz twice before referee Remigio Ruggeri halted the match in the third round.

Berrio’s first title defense was seven months later against 20-0 Lucian Bute in the challenger’s backyard, Montreal. Bute won the IBF title that he still holds today by knocking out Berrio in the 11th round. “I wasn’t prepared properly to fight Bute,” Berrio noted.

In the three years since losing to Bute, Berrio has had only five fights, all victories as a light heavyweight, four in his native Colombia and the other in the Dominican Republic.

Lenny DeJesus has trained Berrio for the past four years. “Alejandro fought the cream of the crop for three or four years,” DeJesus noted. “Other promoters tried to make him a star but they never explained things to him. It got to the point where he didn’t believe anybody because his promoters just used him like a cash cow. He was just fighting here and there, being used and abused. Nobody super middleweight hits like Berrio. He’s a good, quality fighter who still has it. He’s a big puncher that gives fans what they want – knockouts!”

“Alejandro has a manager, Vinnie Scolpino, who brought Joshua Clottey to a world title and his head trainer, Lenny DeJesus, has worked with several world champs,” Boxing 360 Director of Boxing Bob Duffy commented. “With Boxing 360 as his promoter had has the total package. Graham Earl Returns To York Hall For London’s First Boxing Event Of 2011

Former WBU World Lightweight Champion Graham Earl returns to his old stomping ground, The York Hall in Bethnal Green, London, on Saturday 22nd January. However it will not be a return to the ring as Graham will be promoting London’s first championship boxing event of 2011 – ‘CAPITAL PUNISHMENT’

Graham has a long history of championship glory at York Hall. In March 2001 he secured his first title by beating Brian Gentry to lift the BBBofC Southern Area Lightweight belt. Graham successfully defended the title three times, twice at York Hall.

In June 2004 the ‘Home of London Boxing’ was also the scene of his victory over Bobby Vanzie, for the second time, to lift the coveted British Lightweight title. Unusually Graham had to win the British title twice against Bobby Vanzie. In July 2003 Graham defeated Vanzie at the Goresbrook Centre in Dagenham in a very close fight, but was was stripped of the title when he was unable to defend due to an injury. The BBBofC then sanctioned him to fight for the vacated title, again against Vanzie!

Graham defended his British title twice at York Hall, firstly against Steve Murray in July 2004 and then against Kevin Bennett in June 2005, when he also gained the Commonwealth crown.

But without doubt the reason York Hall is etched deep in Graham’s heart is that it was the setting of his most glorious victory, when he beat Angel Hugo Ramirez to become the WBU Lightweight Champion of the World on the 28th October 2006.

Graham has an impressive history at the York Hall, something he will surely strive to continue in the future, albeit as a promoter.

Come January Graham will be hoping that his charge Paul Morby, who headlines the ‘CAPITAL PUNISHMENT’ show with his first defense the BBBofC Southern Area Super Middleweight title against a seriously tough challenger in Essex’s Daniel ‘Mr Slick’ Cadman, will enjoy the same level of success at the famous London landmark as he did.

Portsmouth’s Morby came off a four loss streak to cause one of the upsets of the season by beating the highly experienced Matthew Barney and lift the Southern Area title in October.

Morby’s going to have his hands full though as ‘Mr Slick’ is tough and well capable of taking this fight to the wire. Back in June Cadman made the semifinals of Prizefighter – Super Middleweights only to lose by a close unanimous 28-29 points decision to eventual tournament winner Patrick Mendy.

Jimmo to face Lewis for MFC crown Matchup for LHW title set for main event at MFC 28

The Maximum Fighting Championship has signed an explosive and heavy-hitting title fight as the main event for its first card of 2011 – MFC 28: Supremacy.

In a rare All-Canadian matchup, Ryan “The Big Deal” Jimmo (13-1) and Dwayne “D-Bomb” Lewis (13-6) will square-off for the vacant MFC world light heavyweight title. Final details on the event’s location and date will be released shortly. The main card, which will be capped off with the title fight, will be shown live on HDNet Fights throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The showdown between Jimmo, ranked No. 1 in Canada and Top 30 worldwide, and Lewis, ranked No. 2 in Canada and Top 50 worldwide, follows in the path of the most-recent MFC title bout pitting Douglas Lima against Jesse Juarez. The Jimmo/Lewis clash is a title fight set between two of the MFC’s biggest names and two of its very own home-grown products. Jimmo has fought eight times under the MFC banner, while Lewis leads all competitors with 13 fights in the MFC ring.

“The fans want to see these two settle the issue of who is the best light heavyweight in the MFC, so this is it. It’s time to make it happen,” said MFC Owner/President Mark Pavelich.

“Both fighters deserve the opportunity. Ryan is on an incredible streak, and I made a promise to Dwayne that he would get his shot if he won his last two fights. Now it’s up to them to prove which one of them deserves to wear the championship belt.

Jimmo, who is originally from Halifax, Nova Scotia, but now lives in Edmonton, Alberta, is riding one of the most-impressive winning streaks in all of mixed martial arts. Since a loss in his professional debut, Jimmo has won 13 straight fights, including a three-round decision over Lewis at MFC Unplugged 3 in April 2007.

During that winning streak, Jimmo has compiled five wins by knockout and two via submission, with notable victories coming against Jesse Forbes, Marvin Eastman, and former MFC light heavyweight champ Emanuel Newton. Jimmo last took to the MFC ring at MFC 25 in May 2010, and delivered the best performance of his career has he handed Wilson Gouveia a dramatically one-sided defeat.

Lewis, one of the MFC’s most-popular fighters, is on a tremendous run of his own, having won nine of his last 10 fights. The Fort McMurray, Alberta, product is coming off back-to-back victories over Razak Al-Hassan (split decision at MFC 27) and Mike Nickels (TKO at MFC 26).

While ascending to the top of the contenders’ list, Lewis raised his career knockout total to eight with stoppages of Ryan McClain (second-round TKO at MFC 24) and Marvin Eastman (first-round KO at MFC 23). His only defeat during that run was a decision loss to Newton at MFC 25.

Week 4 of WSB Americas Features Five Olympians Competing, Debut of Six New Boxers and Rematches from Week 3

(COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.) Week four of the World Series of Boxing (WSB) Americas is upon us and features team rematches from week three of the season and the WSB debuts for six new boxers. All four Americas franchises will look to close out the first third of the season with a victory and build momentum for when boxing resumes for week five beginning January 5.

This week’s home teams, the Memphis Force and the Mexico City Guerreros, will be looking to exact some revenge upon losses suffered at the hands of the Los Angeles Matadors and the Miami Gallos last week. Meanwhile, both the Matadors and Gallos will be looking to break a visiting team skid for WSB Americas teams that now stands at six matches with no road team having earned a win away from home.

The Force (1-2) hope to even their record on Thursday, December 16 as the Matadors travel to Memphis for a rematch at the Desoto Civic Center in Southhaven, Miss, at 8 p.m. CT. With a 4-1 win last Sunday, the Matadors (2-1) currently lead the WSB Americas standings with eight points and 11 wins among their first 15 bouts to start the season.

The Force will feature a pair of Cleveland pugilists in 2008 Olympian Raynell Williams in the lightweight division along with Terrell Gausha at middleweight with both boxers having earned victories in their first WSB bouts on Nov. 26 in Southhaven. Making their WSB debuts for the Force will be bantamweight Ronny Beblik, a 2009 World Championships bronze medalist for Germany, along with two-time U.S. heavyweight champion Lenroy “Cam” Thompson (Uniondale, N.Y.). Light heavyweight Robert Brant (St. Paul, Minn.) will be looking to gather his first win as a WSB boxer having suffered a loss against the Guerreros on Nov. 19.

Traveling to Memphis representing the first-place Matadors will be three 2008 Olympians including two-time Olympian and 2007 World champion Rau’shee Warren (Cincinnati, Ohio). He’ll be joined by fellow Olympians Everton Lopes (Salvador de Bahia, Brazil)and middleweight Carlos Gongora, both of whom represented their respective countries at the 2008 Olympic Games. Heavyweight Javier Torres (Pico Rivera, Calif.) was impressive in his WSB introduction as well and will be competing against the Force. Light heavyweight Dorian Anthony (Long Beach, Calif.) is looking to rebound after a tough loss to 2008 Olympic silver medalist Kenny Egan in his first fight.

Miami Gallos vs. Mexico City Guerreros – Friday, December 17, 9 p.m. CT

Given the home teams have a 6-0 record against the visiting teams to start the WSB Americas season, it’s hard to say just which team might have the biggest home-field advantage, but it might start with Mexico City. Competing at nearly 7,300 feet in elevation has its benefits for the Guerreros, and they displayed that proudly on opening night of the WSB with a 5-0 convincing win over the Memphis Force. The road, however, hasn’t been as kind for the team as they’ve suffered two-straight losses against the Matadors (5-0) and the Miami Gallos (3-2).

Two of the boxers picking up wins in the first match return Friday to help bolster the Guerrero attack including middleweight Yamaguchi Florentino (Espirtu Santo, Brazil) and heavyweight Juan Hiracheta (Monterrey, Mexico).

The Mexico City Guerreros have put a stamp on the middleweight division to date in the World Series of Boxing behind the brother tandem of Yamaguchi and Esquiva Florentino. Yamaguchi won his debut bout on November 19 while his younger brother Esquiva broke through for the Guerreros last Thursday in a decisive victory over William Williams (Conyers, Ga.) of the Miami Gallos.

Making his WSB debut this week will be 2008 Olympian Oscar Valdez (Nogales, Mexico) in the lightweight division. Valdez qualified for the Olympic Games at age 17 with just three international bouts and at the 2009 World Amateur Boxing Championships, he won the bronze medal and became the first Mexican boxer in history to earn a medal at a World Championships.

Bantamweight Elias Emigdio (Zitlala, Mexico) will look to get things started for Mexico City while looking to rebound from a loss he suffered to Rau’shee Warren on November 28. Competition in the light heavyweight division won’t be contested as the Mexico City Guerreros are without an eligible boxer in that weight class.

The Guerreros team will be facing a Gallos squad that handed them a 3-2 loss in Miami last Thursday. This time, however, the Gallos feature two boxers stepping into the ring for the first
time in WSB action and another two boxers still looking for their first WSB wins.

Competing for the Gallos will be bantamweight Luis Miguel Diaz (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic), lightweight Leonid Malkov (Kiev, Ukraine), middleweight Anthony Campbell (Covington, Tenn.) and heavyweight Craig Lewis (Detroit, Mich.). Paul Koon (Philadelphia, Pa.) was set to be the Gallos representative at the light heavyweight division and will earn a forfeit win given the Guerreros inability to fill a boxer in that weight class.

Both Diaz and Campbell lost their opening bouts of the WSB season while Malkov and Lewis will begin their seasons in Mexico.

December 14, 2010 (Québec City, Canada) – Legendary future Hall of Famer and Two-Division World Champion Bernard Hopkins arrived in Québec City, Canada today, moving one step closer to his quest to defeat WBC, Ring Magazine and IBO Light Heavyweight World Champion Jean Pascal and become the oldest fighter in the history of boxing to win a prominent world title.

“This goes beyond being a champion,” Hopkins said when he arrived at Jean-Lesage International Airport in Québec City. “This is a grand opportunity. It is a situation I don’t take for granted. Hopkins won the World Middleweight title on SHOWTIME in 1995 and successfully defended it 20 times, solidifying his place as one of the most prolific 160-pound world champions in history. He created a dynasty over his incomparable 22-year career, boasting a resume with signature victories over, among many others, Oscar de la Hoya, Felix “Tito” Trinidad, Antonio Tarver, Winky Wright and Kelly Pavlik.

The Philadelphia native will face an emerging superstar coming off a career-best, upset victory over Chad Dawson, who was considered a top-five pound-for-pound fighter and the best light heavyweight in the world prior to the loss.

The 28-year-old Pascal, who was just five years old when Hopkins turned pro in 1988, is hoping to start a dynasty of his own. This will be the fourth defense of the WBC crown for the popular local favorite and his first for The Ring Magazine Light Heavyweight Championship.

“Dynasty: Pascal vs. Hopkins” is promoted by Groupe Yvon Michel Inc. and Golden Boy Promotions and presented by the Casino de Montreal, The City of Québec Tourism, Coors Light and Videotron. In addition to airing live on SHOWTIME, the event will be distributed live on pay-per-view in Canada on Canal Indigo, Bell TV, Shaw TV and Viewer’s Choice in French and English at 7:00 p.m. ET.
