NEW YORK (Dec. 14, 2010) – There will be no Holiday Season for streaking light heavyweight Ovince Saint Preux, who’ll try to make it seven wins in a row when he fights for the third time since Nov. 19 on a STRIKEFORCE Challengers Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fight card presented by Rockstar Energy Drink on Friday, Jan. 7, 2011, at Nashville Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, Tenn., live on SHOWTIME® at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).

A former University of Tennessee linebacker, Saint Preux (9-4) will be opposed by fellow quickster Ron “Abongo’’ Humphrey (7-2) of Atlanta. The first STRIKEFORCE event of the year will be highlighted by an eagerly awaited confrontation between two of the promotion’s premier, up-and-coming welterweight (170 pounds) stars, unbeaten Tyron Woodley (7-0), of St. Louis, and hard-hitting Belgian, Tarec Saffiedine (10-2).

Originally scheduled to take place on the card, the middleweight (185 pounds) matchup between Yancy “Frisson’’ Medeiros (9-0) of Waianae, Hawaii and John Salter (5-2) of Nashville has been scrapped due to a knee injury sustained by Medeiros.

The 6-foot-3, 27-year-old Saint Preux, of Knoxville, Tenn., will be the first fighter ever to compete on three consecutive STRIKEFORCE events. He is coming off a career-best, thoroughly dominant three-round unanimous decision over UFC veteran, Benji Radach, on Dec. 4, in St. Louis on SHOWTIME. Saint Preux registered a unanimous three-round decision over Antwain Britt during a STRIKEFORCE Challengers event on Nov. 19 in Jackson, Miss.

“I always thought I was fighting Jan. 7, but when I had a chance to take the fight (with Radach), I took it,’’ said Saint Preux, a member of Knoxville Martial Arts Academy who passed what most expected to be his toughest test in impressive fashion. “That was a good fight and a hard fight that we both took on short notice but there was no way I could turn down fighting in Tennessee.

“I like to stay busy and I’m in the gym training, working out and trying to improve all the time anyway. So why not fight again? Besides, this is like a home game for me.’’

Saint Preux, who won his STRIKEFORCE debut with a 0:47, first-round TKO (punches) over Chris Hawk last April 17 in Nashville, played for the Vols from 2001-2004.

After graduating with a degree in Sociology in ’04, he became heavily involved in MMA, utilizing his impressive wrestling skills and natural athletic abilities. He made history on Feb. 20, 2009, by not only competing in Tennessee’s first sanctioned MMA event, but also by recording the first knockout in the state.

One of six children, Saint Preux has one sister and five brothers. Four of his brothers are twins; one set is older and one set is younger. He has a couple of brands on his body. One is for his fraternity, Omega Psi Phi.

Humphrey, a military son who was born on a base in Vacaville, Calif., will be making his fourth appearance for STRIKEFORCE and third in a row on STRIKEFORCE Challengers on SHOWTIME. In his most recent outing, he was submitted (rear naked choke) in the second round by a red-hot Mike “Mak’’ Kyle at a Challengers event last July 23 at Everett, Wash.

In his outing before last, the previous March 26, Humphrey made George Bush tap (guillotine choke) at 1:44 of the first round on a Challengers card in Fresno, Calif.

The birth name of the 5-foot-11, 33-year-old is “Ronald,” but he prefers to be addressed as “Abongo,” the name of an African warrior spirit believed to protect a village located in The Republic of Ghana. The moniker was bestowed upon him a few years ago after he endured a series of mentally and physically grueling tasks during a rites of passage trip to Africa.

Humphrey’s experience there inspired him to establish a non-profit organization that allows him to introduce other African-Americans to their heritage by bringing them to Africa.

“There are certain things that are lacking in the black community here and one of them has to do with cultural identity,” said Humphrey. “Fighting and doing the community work in Africa is something that really drives and motivates me in life.”

Humphrey was introduced to a national audience as a contestant on BET’s MMA reality series “Iron Ring” where he was a member of a fight team coached by MMA star, “Mr. International” Shonie Carter, and managed by hip-hop artist and producer Lil’ Jon.

Among those Humphrey defeated during his stint on “Iron Ring” were former K-1 USA contender, Jeff “Big Diesel” Ford, and Carlos Moreno, whom Humphrey knocked out with a head kick.

Quebec City, Canada (December 14) – Before future Hall of Famer Bernard Hopkins he faces WBC, Ring Magazine and IBO Light Heavyweight World Champion Jean Pascal on December 18 live on SHOWTIME® in the U.S. and pay-per-view in Canada, a squad of undefeated locals featuring Kevin Bizier, Michael Zewski, Pier-Olivier Cote and Eric Martel-Bahoeli, will join standout fighters including former Junior Welterweight World Champion Paulie “The Magic Man” Malignaggi, highly-regarded contender Daniel “The Golden Child” Jacobs and unbeaten New Yorker Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin as they face off in respective bouts in front of an expected sold out arena of more than 16,000 fans at the Pepsi Coliseum in Quebec City, bringing some heat to the Great White North. 26-year-old Saint-Emile native Kevin Bizier (12-0, 8 KO’s) has been moving full steam ahead since turning professional in 2008, and after back-to-back knockouts of Johnny Navarrete and Leonardo Rojas he’s ready to showcase his talents to fans both at the Pepsi Coliseum and across Canada on the pay-per-view broadcast this Saturday night. Bizier will go for his third KO in a row when he steps into the ring to face Oklahoma City’s Ronnie Warrior (13-3-1, 4 KO’s) in an eight round welterweight contest.

Top middleweight contender Daniel Jacobs (20-1, 17 KO’s) showed a warrior’s heart when he faced Dmitry Pirog in a WBO World Title bout in July shortly after the passing of his beloved grandmother. Although he suffered his first professional defeat that night, the gifted Brooklynite has picked himself up, dusted himself off and looks to close out 2010 in style when he takes on Dallas’ Jesse Orta (7-13-2, 4 KO’s) in an eight-round super middleweight bout.

One of Canada’s top heavyweight prospects, Eric Martel-Bahoeli (5-0, 3 KO’s) is looking toward a big 2011, but first, he must close out his 2010 campaign with a four round clash against Bayamon, Puerto Rico’s Ruben Rivera (3-4, 1 KO’s).

Manchester, England’s Tyson Fury (12-0, 9 KO’s) is a certified star in his home country, and in only his second fight off of British shores, he’s looking to make an impression when he squares off against Galen Brown (33-15, 20 KO’s) of St. Josephs, Missouri in the evening’s opening pay-per-view fight. An exciting two-fisted banger, Fury won the BBBofC English heavyweight title in 2010 with a ninth round stoppage of John McDermott and he’ll be looking for his fourth win of the year this weekend.

No stranger to fighting on big undercards, Quebec City’s Pier-Olivier Cote (13-0, 8 KO’s) will return to the Pepsi Coliseum for the third time as a professional to face Mexico City’s Cesar Soriano (21-25, 13 KO’s) in a six-round lightweight contest. One of Canada’s top prospects, the 26-year-old is coming off a sixth round knockout of Walter Sergio Gomez in October, his fourth victory of 2010.

A proud native of Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, 21-year-old Mikael Zewski first came to the attention of the boxing world during a stellar amateur career that saw him compile a 138-29 record that included four Canadian National Championships. Now 5-0 as a professional with three knockouts and a recent decision win over Ardrick Butler in November, Zewski is ready for his four-round junior middleweight bout against a yet-to-be-named opponent in front of his fans in Quebec.

Unbeaten in 21 professional fights, Brooklyn’s Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin (21-0, 15 KO’s) pays tribute to his Cuban heritage and legendary namesake each time he steps into the ring by delivering an all out effort in search of victory. A versatile pugilist, Quillin returned from a nearly two year layoff due to injury with a near shutout decision win over Fernando Zuniga in February. Daryl Setterfield And Danny Connor Back In Action This Saturday

Sutton’s Danny ‘Cassius’ Connor and Redhill’s ‘Dynamo’ Daryl Setterfield are back in action this coming Saturday, the 18th December, at the Bruce Baker promoted ‘Christmas Punch’ event at the Tolworth Recreation Centre in Surbiton.

The pair of Surrey battlers, who both train at Johnny Eames’ Ultrachem TKO Boxing Gym in Canning Town, London, have been sparring each other as part of their preparations.

Following one of their intense sessions Daryl, whose last outing was against Navid Mansouri on the undercard of the David Haye – Audley Harrison World title fight at the M.E.N. Arena in Manchester in November, spoke of his upcoming fight. “I’m fighting Adam Battle, he’s quite a strong puncher and boxes all right. He beat Danny last time, but Danny wasn’t on form then. Hopefully I should beat him.

I’m looking to end the year on a high. I’ve had a few hard fights this year. The last fight in Manchester I had a cold for a week but still had to rise to the occasion. I enjoyed the occasion but the result not so much. Can’t complain though as I only boxed to about 25% of my ability.

I’m looking to win on Saturday and keep things rolling in 2011.”

A short while after he’d finished his training session Danny, who drew against Daryl Setterfield on his maiden outing as a professional and lost to Daryl’s opponent Adam Battle on his second pro fight, said, “Yeah, I’m boxing a boy called John Brennan. He’s a good fighter, he got to the London finals in the ABA’s.

He’s not a bad fighter, he’s a stand up fighter who likes to come forward and get involved.

He’s got a flat old nose so obviously hasn’t got much of a defense. So I’m going to look to use my speed, my angles and make that nose even flatter for him.

I’m looking to build on this for the New Year. Everything is totally different from my last fight, I’ve been running properly and doing my sprints. Everything is going good in the gym.

I’m definitely going to do a number on this kid ad let everyone know what I am all about.”

The new movie The Fighter is coming out staring Mark Wahlburg as Micky Ward.

Calvin Kattar is a natural athlete who has the potential to become an MMA version of boxer “Irish” Micky Ward, who LoNano successfully managed for several years, especially in his Merrimack Valley home base. “I really think we might have a new Micky Ward here,” LoNano remarked. “I see a lot of Micky – his heart, dedication to training and determination – in Calvin. Olszewski to Defend WIBA Flyweight Title

Monster Energy Tries to Hammer Out Small Business

(Tampa, FL) – An arrogant disdain for the law and for honest competition earns a lawsuit for two giant partners in trademark lifting.

The monster corporations of Coca-Cola Enterprises, Inc. and Hansen Beverage Company (which produces the Monster energy drinks) were denied a trademark of the name “Hammer” from the United States Patent and Trademark Office because the name had already been taken.

Shockingly, they decided to distribute the product anyway under the name Hammer M X-presso Monster.

A smaller company, Double Blue Jay Corporation, had already trademarked, advertised, and begun distributing their energy drink Hammer’s Redneck Punch, a name they first used in June, 2008. It was appearing in convenience stores in late 2009 when a founder of the company saw another new energy drink with the same name “Hammer” in the same cooler as his product.

“I couldn’t believe it,” says Steve Williams, President of Double Blue Jay. “They put our name on their product and sold it without a legal trademark.”

Trying to give Hansen and Coca-Cola a second chance to do the right thing, Double Blue Jay wrote a letter to the companies pointing out their violation of the law and asking them to discontinue use of the name “Hammer”.

Hansen and Coca-Cola refused.

Not to be intimidated by the monster companies, Double Blue Jay decided to go up against the “giants” and is suing them for trademark infringement and unfair competition.

Coke and Hansen claim, in their defense, that the two “Hammer” products look vastly different and would not be confused.

But as Double Blue Jay’s attorney, Eric Ludin of Tucker & Ludin, points out, people could easily mix them up if they heard the name from a friend or did a Google search. Many of Double Blue Jay’s potential customers would be swallowed up by Monster’s name recognition.

“Imagine if the roles were reversed,” says Ludin, “and Double Blue Jay decided to name their product ‘Monster’. Do you think Hansen would let them get away with it?”

” The only reason that they think they can do this,” adds Steve Williams, “is because they are ‘Coca-Cola’ and ‘Hansen’. They don’t want any competition and they’re afraid to let consumers decide for themselves.”

On top of all their other offenses, Hansen is now counter-suing Double Blue Jay to cancel its trademark, although Hansen admits that Double Blue Jay has a valid U.S. Trademark Registration Number.

The parties, having prepared their complaints and defenses, await a court date.

“This is a classic case of David versus Goliath,” says Williams.

“Goliath thinks he can win just because he’s bigger, even though David has done everything right and has the law on his side.”

Double Blue Jay Corporation may be small but they are unafraid and mighty, and ultimately the truth always prevails.

Byarm Batters Thorpe; Sigmon Outpunches Kennedy in Baltimore!

Baltimore, MD (December 13, 2010) – Heavyweight prospect Maurice “Freight Train” Byarm remained unbeaten and impressed a capacity crowd at the Pikesville Armory with a fifth round stoppage of previously undefeated Winston Thorpe on Saturday evening.

Headlining Baltimore Pro Boxing’s “Seasons Beatings”, Byarm dominated from opening bell, connecting with a number of powerful shots that he put every one of his 247 pounds into. Thorpe was extremely game and never went down despite being rocked on multiple occasions but Byarm’s offensive arsenal was simply too much for him. After being knocked around the ring, Referee John Gradowski had no choice but to save the fading Thorpe from taking any further punishment at 2:51 of the fifth.

Byarm, of Washington, DC by way of Philadelphia, PA, is now 10-0 with 7 Knockouts. Thorpe returns to South Carolina at 3-1-1.

In the evening’s co-feature, wildly popular super middleweight Scott “Cujo” Sigmon captured the East Coast title by decisioning grizzled Baltimorean Julius Kennedy in a thrilling ten round bout.

The fight was action packed throughout and both men had their spurts of success, with Kennedy connecting in close quarters while Sigmon landed a number of hard shots from the outside. Kennedy, who fought the final few rounds with his right eye swollen shut, rallied late in one of Maryland’s best bouts of 2010 but was also docked two points for repeated low blows. Both fighters were met with a round of applause at the final bell.

Scores were 96-92 twice and 95-93.

Bedford, VA’s Sigmon ups his record to 13-2 with 5 wins by kayo. Kennedy, who previously battled to a thrilling draw with rival Jesse Nicklow, drops to 7-2-1 with 3 knockouts while once again displaying the heart of a lion.

BERNARD HOPKINS READY TO MAKE HISTORY IN FIGHT AGAINST WBC, RING MAGAZINE AND IBO LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT WORLD CHAMPION JEAN PASCAL ON DECEMBER 18

Quebec City, Canada (December 13)…When Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins faces WBC, Ring Magazine and IBO Light Heavyweight Champion Jean Pascal on December 18 at the Pepsi Coliseum in Quebec City, Canada live on SHOWTIME® in the U.S. and on pay-per-view in Canada, he will be 28 days shy of his forty-sixth birthday. If Hopkins defeats Pascal, he will become the oldest fighter in the history of the sport to win a significant world title, 38 days older than “Big” George Foreman was when he defeated Michael Moorer for the Heavyweight World title on November 5, 1994.

“The difference between me and Foreman is that most people didn’t think Foreman could do it. He was the underdog of all underdogs when he faced Moorer,” Hopkins said. “Not only do people think I can win, they think I can win big, and I plan on proving them right.”

Despite his age, Hopkins has shown no signs of slowing down. He has won five of his last six fights and is no stranger to facing younger opponents with five of his in-ring rivals having been over a decade younger than him during his 22-year career. The most notable of these was Kelly Pavlik, whom Hopkins defeated on October 18, 2008. At the time of the Pavlik vs. Hopkins fight, the 17-year age gap between the two foes was the largest of Hopkins’ career, until now.

Because Pascal is six months younger than Pavlik, there is a nearly 18 year age disparity between Hopkins and the Light Heavyweight World Champion Pascal, which is serving as a motivating factor in this fight for “The Executioner.”

“Youth doesn’t bother me,” said Hopkins. “I have faced youth. Pascal hasn’t faced someone like me. He hasn’t faced a legend. He is hosting me in his country, on his turf, defending his title. He has a lot to be nervous about on top of the fact that when he looks in the opposite corner on fight night, he is going to see greatness. I can only add to my legacy. I can only continue to make history and back-up what I have already accomplished.”
