THE LOS ANGELES MATADORS BEAT THE MEMPHIS FORCE TO EARN THEIR SECOND CONSECUTIVE HOME VICTORY

Sunday, Dec. 12 at Club Nokia at LA LIVE.

LOS ANGELES (Dec. 12, 2010) – The Los Angeles Matadors made their hometown Angelinos proud Sunday night at Club Nokia at LA Live as they easily defeated the Memphis Force 4-1 in a best of five series. The Matadors earned three points for the match win and maintained a steady lead in the Americas Conference, holding a one point lead over the Miami Gallos. Additionally, the Matadors remain in a second place tie with Paris United and Milano Thunder of the Europe Conference, behind the Baku Fires of the Asia Conference, in the international World Series of Boxing.

Bantamweight Matador Fernando Martinez improved to 2-0 in defeating Detelin Dalakliev by decision 48-47, 48-47, 49-46. Martinez was the aggressor throughout the bout with a higher volume of punches, despite a significant height and reach disadvantage, gassing Dalakliev with his up-tempo pace.

“My opponent was larger then me,” Martinez said. “So the strategy was to move around, go for the body, keep my distance from his jab and, when I had the opportunity, move inside.”

The Matadors took a 2-0 lead as lightweight Eric Fowler scored a third round TKO over Yahman Phelps, at 2:46, despite a gash on his forehead from an accidental headbutt in the first round and sustaining a cut above his left eye in the beginning of the third.

“It feels good to get the knockout and pick up a win for The Matadors,” Fowler said. “We’re fighting for LA – that’s who we do this for.”

Added Fowler on his wild, go-for-broke style of punches, “I can box, but I wanted to put pressure on him and be aggressive. His style made the fight a little sloppy and wild, but a win is a win. We can always do better, always get better.”

Middleweight Russell Lamour continued the Matadors winning ways as he scored a unanimous decision over Chris Jones, 48-47, 49-46, 48-47. Lamour opened a gash over Jones’ left eye early in the first round yet was unable to finish him. The Matador continued to pressure Jones throughout the five rounds en route to the unanimous decision.

“It feels good to pick up my second consecutive win,” Lamour said. “It puts me in perfect position for the rest of the season to help us advance to the semifinals.”

For safety reasons the L.A. Matadors withdrew Light Heavyweight Carlos Gongora due to being below the minimum weight requirement. The Matadors forfeited the light heavyweight bout giving Anthony Mack the victory.

Heavyweight and Long Beach Native David Imoesiri scored his first win of the season defeating Javonta Charles in a unanimous decision, 48-47.

“I’m happy with the win but I’m a little bit disappointed in my performance,” Imoesiri said. “I could have been sharper and a little more prepared. I put up a good fight and had a tough guy in front of me, but I should have been able to put him away a little bit easier.”

The World Series of Boxing is a groundbreaking, international sports league with teams from three continents competing for five spots – bantamweight, lightweight, middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight, in the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

The Matadors will compete against three other North American teams, Miami, Mexico City and Memphis, for the next four months with the winner from the North American division advancing to the semifinals to compete against teams from other continents.

The Matadors will travel to Memphis for a rematch against the Force on Thursday, Dec. 16 at Desoto Civic Center with their next home stand at Nokia Theatre Jan. 13.

Becomes First Fighter to Hold Major MMA and K-1 World Grand Prix Titles

NEW YORK (Dec. 12, 2010) – STRIKEFORCE Heavyweight Champion Alistair “The Demolition Man” Overeem of The Netherlands made history on Saturday by winning the annual eight-man, single elimination K-1 World Grand Prix Championship in Japan, thus making him the first fighter in history to simultaneously hold a major MMA and K-1 Grand Prix title.

On Saturday, the 6-foot-5, 30-year-old Overeem won three fights at the one night, eight-man K-1 Grand Prix, the most prestigious tournament in kickboxing. He capped off a winning night by scoring a first-round (1:07) TKO in the finals over K-1 legend Peter Aerts, a three-time champion of the tournament.

In the semifinal round of the event, Overeem produced a similar result, registering a first round TKO over Gokhan Saki (2:33). In the opening tournament round, he scored a unanimous decision over Tyrone Sprong.

Overeem has been unstoppable in the sport of MMA, not suffering a loss in over three years. On Nov. 16, 2007, he became the first STRIKEFORCE MMA heavyweight champion in history, crushing Paul “The Headhunter” Buentello with knee strikes to the body in the second round (3:42) of their matchup at HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif. Overeem returned to STRIKEFORCE action last May 15, scoring a first-round (3:40) TKO over Brett “The Grim” Rogers at Scottrade Center in St. Louis to bring his career MMA record up to 33-11.

TACOMA, Wash. (Dec. 11, 2010)—After an action-packed doubleheader, Joseph King Kong Agbeko and Abner Mares emerge as the finalists in The Bantamweight Tournament: Winner Takes All on SHOWTIME®. In a rematch of their Halloween 2009 meeting, Agbeko reclaimed the IBF bantamweight world championship he lost from Yonnhy “El Colombiano” Perez via unanimous decision with an equal parts aggressive and calculated performance. Mares won a gritty split decision over the veteran Vic “Raging Bull” Darchinyan in a fight that thrilled fans in attendance at Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, Wash.

After overworking the punch stat machine in their first bout last year, Agbeko (28-2, 22 KOs) surprised Perez (20-1-1, 14 KOs) and impressed the SHOWTIME boxing analysts with an excitingly effective strategy throughout the fight. Displaying excellent defense and choosing his shots wisely, Agbeko dictated the fight’s direction through the early rounds with hard right hands and quick combinations. By the fifth round, the defending champion Perez had a cut over his left eye and began to fight with a sense of urgency.

In a potential Round of the Year sixth round, Perez, of Santa Fe Springs, Calif., turned the match into a brawl as the punches began to fly at a pace much closer to Perez’ normal work rate. The men ditched defense for offense for the full three minutes and were rewarded by a standing ovation at round’s end. By the seventh, Agbeko, of Bronx, N.Y., by way of Ghana, regained his composure and continued with his game plan through most of the bout’s final six rounds. Judges scored the fight a unanimous decision for Agbeko with scores of 115-113, 116-112 and 117-111 to hand Perez his first career loss.

Referencing the IBF belt now in his hands, Agbeko exclaimed. “This is my meal ticket and I’m glad I got it back. I am presenting it to Ghana as a Christmas bonus.” When asked about the upcoming tournament final with Mares, he said, “I’ve watched Abner Mares. He is a very smart kid. King Kong is always King Kong. I’m going to get the crown from him.”

Respectful in defeat, Perez offered, “Agbeko had an intelligent fight today and he won fair and square. I did not expect this game plan from Agbeko.”

SHOWTIME boxing analyst Al Bernstein noted, “Round seven was an important round. Agbeko stemmed the tide of the Perez onslaught.” Showing not a speck of ring rust after a 13-month break from boxing, Agbeko’s victory not only put the IBF title back in his position but earned him a spot in the tournament’s finals in 2011 against tonight’s other winner Mares. Mares said of the fight, “It was a hard fight, my hardest fight ever.”

In the thrilling opening bout, Darchinyan (35-3-1, 27 KOs) and Mares (21-0-1, 13 KOs) produced a bloody, back-and-forth battle for 12 rounds in front of a spirited crowd in the Pacific Northwest. Despite being cut along his hairline in the first round, Mares displayed his mettle and chin by withstanding the mighty two-division champion’s destructive left hand.

Darchinyan dropped Mares for the first time in his career with a flash knockdown in the second round. Capping off Mares’ adversity-filled start, referee Bobby Howard deducted a point from him in the fourth round for low blows.

Showing the qualities of a champion that Mares may soon become, he shrugged off the incident-filled start and forged on with blood pouring down his face and behind on points. To start the sixth round, Mares came out punching in combinations and landing big right hand shots. By the seventh round, Mares knocked down an off-balance Darchinyan with a glancing blow and felt the tide was beginning to turn.

“Our plan was to push him back because we know he likes to bully people. He has a tremendous punch. I proved that I could take punches,” said the emerging Mexican star who hails from Guadalajara and lives in Montebello, Calif. “I kept pushing him back. I heard him moan every time I landed a body shot.”

Although known for his power, Darchinyan surprised many with a display of untapped boxing skills by using the ring and counterpunching for most of the fight before reverting back to hunting for a big left punch as his energy faded. By the fight’s final rounds, Darchinyan looked tired and attempted to hold on to Mares – and his points lead – to no avail. The well-conditioned Mares continued to stalk Darchinyan as the fight’s aggressor and eventually did enough to win an exciting split decision with scores of 115-111 and 113-112 for Mares and 115-111 for Darchinyan.

The close fight and split decision loss did not leave Darchinyan pleased. “It’s very disgusting, very bad ref. I think, of course, I won. He didn’t let me do what I wanted to do,” said Darchinyan before conceding about Mares, “He is a tough kid.”

The night’s action delivered just what it intended: exciting, competitive and compelling fights for SHOWTIME viewers. The night also delivered the makings of another incredible night of 118-pound action in 2011 as Agbeko and Mares will compete for weight class supremacy and the IBF title. In the consolation bout, Perez and Darchinyan will look to bounce back from tough, hard fought losses.

Absent from the fight was Agbeko’s promoter Don King, mourning the loss of his wife Henrietta. The telecast honored King and his late wife with a 10-count moment of silence.

The replay of tonight’s telecast will air on Tuesday, Dec. 14 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on SHO2 and be available On Demand from Dec. 14 through Dec. 27.

The final show for the 2010 Gleason’s Gym monthly boxing series will be December 18, 2010.

The show is open to any registered amateur. This includes Juniors, Seniors and Master boxers. There will be both male and female bouts. (We already have four confirmed female bouts.)

The weigh in will begin at 4:00PM and the first bout will begin at 6:00PM.

All our bouts are pre-matched. They are sanctioned by USABoxingMetro. All boxers must have their boxing book with them in order to participate.

The ticket price is $20 per person. Children 6 and under are not charged. All gym members and registered amateurs with their books in hand pay $15 per person.
