Marston & McKenzie Battle It Out In London… For The Cameras

Hollywood came to London earlier today. OK, not quite Hollywood but the film crew shooting the worldwide Christmas 2010 Promo for The Body Shop were in town, at the Ultrachem TKO Gym, to film Great Britain’s best known female boxers Marianne ‘Golden Girl’ Marston and Angel ‘The Artist’ McKenzie in action.

Joining the film crew were WinkBall.com citizen reporters Tara Manandhar and Ralph Miller, who in addition to capturing the whole shoot on video, as part of the WinkBall.com campaign to highlight Women’s Boxing, undertook interviews with Ultrachem TKO Gym regulars such as former Olympian Billy Joe Saunders, Dutch Cruiserweight Mitchell Balker and Light Middleweight prospect Pat McAleese as well as top British boxing coaches Johnny Eames and Derek Grainger amongst others.

The promo, directed by Duncan Wilson, is set to the background of the Christmas carol ‘Joy to the World’ and celebrates all things distinctly London. Iconic backdrops featuring an eclectic mix of quintessentially English characters from Beef Eaters outside the Tower of London, to an Opera Singer standing on London Bridge during rush hour… crazy punks in Camden, graffiti artist, breakdancers, club scenes in East London … and many others. Each character contributes a line or two of the verse delivering a fantastic fun and festive message from London and Londoners to the rest of the world.

Marianne and Angel’s contribution consisted of them in a full blown sparring session followed by sparring and corner scene cuts with them singing their lines from ‘Joy to the World’.

Following the shoot Marianne, who previously was the lead singer of rock band ‘Random Acts of Violence’, said, “That was a lot of fun, I can’t wait to see the finished advert.

It was an interesting experience, I’m used to moving around and singing but boxing and singing is another thing altogether.

It could have got messy, but Angel and I are sparring each other a lot at the moment, as we have fights coming up, so know each other really well.”

‘We’re professionals” said the quirky former Big Brother star Angel McKenzie, who is also a singer and artist, “We could box each other anywhere, anytime and it wouldn’t be messy. It would be exciting.

Boxing is an art, I think our boxing will be the star of the Body Shop Christmas film because we are exciting all action boxers” before smiling broadly and adding cheekily, “and everybody loves to watch girls fight, yes?”

SYKES AIMING TO WIN “BEST EVER PRIZEFIGHTER”

Unbeaten British champion Gary Sykes says he won’t “hide behind title”
Gary Sykes will turning on the Christmas lights in his home town of Dewsbury next weekend – a week after he hopes to light up the York Hall by winning Prizefighter Super Featherweights.

The unbeaten British champion faces a hectic few weeks in the spotlight – entering Prizefighter live on Sky Sports on Saturday as favourite, heading home to Dewsbury to kick-off the season’s celebrations the following Saturday then returning back to the capital the next day for the British Boxing Board of Control 2010 awards lunch, where he is up for fight of the year after his terrific title tussle with Andy Morris in March.
Prizefighter could be the icing on the cake of a fantastic year for the 26 year-old, but rather than sit back and take the plaudits, Sykes is eager to test himself against the strongest line-up to date in the 15 editions of Barry Hearn’s eight-man, one night tournaments.

“I was a split-second decision to enter – I’m usually a slow-starter so this is a real challenge for me and I have to turn that upside down,” said Sykes. “But it’s a good challenge – I’m undefeated and I’m not shying away from fights, I’m not hiding behind my title.

“When my trainer Julian McGowan tells me to do something I do it, he’s clever guy and has my best interests at heart and we’re friends. He said this is a great chance, and that I can win it. I’ve got it all to lose in many ways as if I win people might say ‘well he should win because he’s British champion, he’s supposed to win’. But I reckon I will get going after a couple of rounds and I’m well up for it.”

Sykes faces former British and European title challenger Scott Lawton in the third quarter-final of the night, and is on the opposite half of the draw to the Mongolian Warrior Choi Tseveenpurev who kicks-off the evening against Hove fighter Ben Murphy. A Choi/Sykes final is the favourite with the odds compilers but the Dewsbury man is not thinking about facing the exciting 39 year-old.

“I’m not overly worried about Choi to be honest, he’s explosive but I think he’d be better over a longer distance,” said Sykes. “It’s a great line-up though so if I win it, I’ll have won the best ever Prizefighter.”

Oliveira & Rumble Star start Brazilian revolution

Undefeated middleweight prospect Michael Oliveira headlines Saturday night show in Sao Paulo

SAO PAULO (Nov. 19, 2010) – Undefeated Michael “The Brazilian Rocky” Oliveira and his promoter, Rumble Star Promotions, take the first step towards popularizing boxing in Brazil tomorrow (Saturday) night with the presentation of “A Gala Night of Boxing” pro-am event.

“A Gala Night of Boxing,” presented by Rumble Star Promotions, in association with Reunion Sports & Marketing, will air live on SporTV and TV Globo International live from Espaco das Americas in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

The 20-year-old Oliveira (12-0, 10 KOs), named by the Brazilian International Press Award’s as its 2009 Athlete of the Year, was born in Sao Paulo but he moved two weeks after birth with his family to Miami. He is promoted by his father Carlo’s company, Rumble Star Promotions, and trained by Danny Hawk at Normandy Gym in North Miami.

Oliveira has a growing fan-base in the United States, particularly among Brazilian communities, but he and his promoter, Rumble Star, are committed to changing the Brazilian boxing culture. “Based on audience ratings for TV Global,” promoter Carlos Oliveira said, “interest in boxing has already started increasing. A piece on Michael aired the other night and drew 15 million viewers.”

Oliveira, who won the UNBC Latin title September 11, 2009, will fight for the first time in his native Brazil, against Dominican power-punching Junior “Dangerous” Ramos (10-5, 6 KOs) in the 10-round, non-title main event.

“Nothing is impossible,” the charismatic Oliveira explained what he and Rumble Star are attempting to do in Brazil. “It’s just going to take time and a lot of hard work. We will accomplish our goals but we need help from the public and local television. Soccer is 24/7 in Brazil but there are so many kids here with potential in other sports, not just in my sport, boxing. Brazilian volleyball, for example, is great. Why not also support sports like boxing, volleyball, tennis, swimming and others like elsewhere in the world? I love soccer and played it in high school, but Brazilian sports fans should expand their interests and not limit it to soccer. It will be difficult but I’m confident we’ll accomplish what we’ve set out to do here.”

Oliveira-Ramos Streaming Free

The Oliveira-Ramos non-title fight will be streamed FREE, Saturday night starting at 7 PM/ET, by going on line to www.MichaelOliveira.com.

Oliveira already has the support of living Brazilian boxing legend, Eder “The Golden Bantam” Jofre, the former 2-divisional world champion who visited Michael at training camp yesterday and plans to be in attendance Saturday evening. Another Brazilian boxing icon, WBC Junior Middleweight Champion (1975) Miquel de Oliveira, will work Michael’s corner along with head trainer Hawk.

“To meet the greatest Brazilian fighter of all-time (Eder) was a privilege for me,” Michael commented. “It was also very emotional because he has so much charisma and energy that he always puts a smile on everybody’s face. At his age (74) and with what he accomplished in boxing, he still had a blast here with us. I’ve been working with Miquel since I’ve been here and it’s going to be great having him work my corner with my coach, Danny.

“I really feel like I’m fighting at home because there’s a certain sense of security. It’s been different training here because of the altitude and unstable weather – hot and cold – but we were ready for that. The people here are easier to get along with because everybody respects each other. The Brazilian revolution starts Saturday night in Sao Paulo.”

In the 12-round co-feature, South American and Brazilian Heavyweight Champion George Arias (46-11, 33 KOs), of Sao Paulo, defends his South American title belt against Argentinean arch-rival Emilio Ezequiel “Chiquito” Zarate (10-2-1, 5 KOs). Also in action is light middleweight Edvan Dos Santos Barros (10-10-1, 7 KOs), who lives in Florida but was born in Salvador, Brazil, in a 6-round fight versus local Sao Paulo favorite Eraldo Cesar Pereira (6-1, 3 KOs). Barros extended former WBA Welterweight Champion Luis Colazzo the full 10-round distance in a loss.

Brazil’s top amateur boxers and Sao Paulo favorites, female heavyweight Roseli Feitosa and welterweight David Lourenco, are also slated to box in separate matches. Feitisa, a 2010 World Boxing Championships gold medalist, faces Daniela Pastieli. Lourenco, the 2010 Youth Olympic Games gold-medal winner, boxes Felipe Pereia, a Bronze medalist at the 2010 Brazilian Olympic Championships.

Pavelich scales the Summit; MFC Owner to take part in major mixed martial arts conference

After 10 years exclusively in the business of MMA, Mark Pavelich, Owner/President of the Maximum Fighting Championship, certainly knows the ins and outs of operating a highly successful organization.

Panther Wrestling Inks Six for 2011-12 Season*

*CEDAR FALLS**, Iowa – *The University of Northern Iowa wrestling team inked six student-athletes for the 2011-12 season head coach Doug Schwab announced today. Joining the Panther wrestling squad will be Blaize Cabell (Independence, Iowa/Independence HS), Joe Colon (Clear Lake, Iowa/Clear Lake HS/Iowa Central), Tanner Hiatt (Kelley, Iowa/Ballard (Huxley) HS), Jarrett Jensen (Rapid City, SD/Stevens HS), Cody Krumwiede (Waverly, Iowa/Waverly-Shell Rock HS) and AJ McBroom (Runnells, Iowa/Southeast Polk HS).

“We worked really hard as a coaching staff recruiting this fall and
we’re very pleased with the six kids that have signed with us,” Schwab
said. “We are very excited to get these six kids on campus in 2011. This
class has some good depth and will really fit our needs. Five of the
signees are from the state of Iowa and the one is from South Dakota.
Because of that, each of them has a very strong work ethic and blue
collar work mentally. These six signees will fit very well into our
program right away. They believe in our program and we’re eager to
welcome them to UNI wrestling in 2011.”

*Blaize Cabell – Independence, Iowa/Independence HS*

Cabell is a three-time Iowa state qualifier placing sixth in 2009 at 171
pounds, finishing the season with a 40-4 record. In addition, he is a
USA Wrestling National Folkstyle Champion.

“Blaize may be a little raw, but he is a big, strong explosive kid,”
Schwab said. “In addition to wrestling he played football and baseball
and was very good at both of them. He is a very athletic kid and we’re
excited to see him concentrate on wrestling when he comes to UNI. He has a lot of untapped ability and we’re excited to see what we can do when he focuses just on wrestling. He’s also a great student and has a high priority for academics.”

*Joe Colon – Clear Lake, Iowa/Clear Lake HS/Iowa Central*

At Clear Lake, Colon finished his high school career with a 130-1
record, including perfect seasons in 2007 and 2009. Colon was a two-time state champion, taking the title at 103 pounds in 2007 and the 125-pound title in 2009. Colon also finished third at the 2008 state
championships. At Iowa Central, Colon was a 2010 National Junior College Champion at 125 pounds.

“Joe only lost once in high school and was junior college champion and
he is a very tough, hard-nosed kid,” Schwab said. “Obviously he is used
to winning and always wrestles hard. He really bought into the UNI
wrestling philosophy and we’re looking forward to working with him.”

*Tanner Hiatt – Kelley, Iowa/Ballard (Huxley) HS*

Hiatt captured the 2009 state title at 140 pounds capping a perfect 47-0 season. Hiatt earned runner-up honors at 130 pounds in 2008 while
finishing third at 140 pounds in 2010. In the past three seasons, Hiatt
has compiled an impressive 131-6 record while also helping Ballard
(Huxley) High School to three straight top-three team finishes,
including back-to-back state titles in 2008 and 2009.

“Tanner is a very tough competitor,” Schwab said. “He is very tough and
physical kid with a very strong determination to win. He has a very
strong desire to walk onto the mat and really beat his competitor.”

*Jarrett Jensen – Rapid City, S.D./Stevens HS*

Jensen is a four-time state qualifier in South Dakota, capturing titles
in 2008, 2009 and 2010. Jensen captured his first state title in 2008 at
145 pounds before claiming titles at 152 pounds in 2009 and 2010. Jensen also earned a third-place finish in 2007 at 135 pounds.

“We were very persistent with Jarrett,” Schwab said. “He won a lot in
South Dakota but seemed a little overlooked by some. I see a great deal
of potential in him. He is also a very good baseball player, so I’m
excited to see his improvement when he can focus on just wrestling.
Jarrett is also a very good student.”

*Cody Krumwiede – Waverly, Iowa/Waverly-Shell Rock HS*

Krumwiede comes into the 2010-11 season ranked as the top heavyweight in the country at 285 pounds by InterMat Wrestling. He is a three-time state qualifier, claiming back-to-back titles at the heavyweight slot.

He has posted two consecutive undefeated seasons while claiming state
titles in 2009 and 2010. In addition, Krumwiede helped Waverly-Shell
Rock High School to three-consecutive team titles.

“We feel he is one of the top heavyweights in the country,” Schwab said.

“But in addition to that, he really sold himself to me. I have been
really impressed by his work ethic and his toughness on the mat. He has
some very high goals and we want to continue that when he gets to UNI.

If he continues to progress at the rate he did in high school, we’ll
have a great heavyweight on our hands in a few years.”

*AJ McBroom – Runnells, Iowa/Southeast Polk HS*

McBroom is a two-time state qualifier, placing seventh at 160 pounds in
2009 and eighth at 171 pounds in 2010. McBroom helped Southeast Polk
High School to two top-10 finishes at the state tournament, taking
eighth in 2010 and fourth in 2009.

“AJ is a very hard working, tough kid and he’s always hungry for more,”
Schwab said. “He maybe doesn’t have the same accolades as some of the others, but he is very motivated and really wanted to be at UNI. I
almost feel like he has a chip on his shoulder and is really ready to
come prove himself when he gets here.”
