Scotsman ready to claim the big prize on Saturday

Gary McArthur says he is the danger-man in the line-up for Saturday’s Prizefighter Super-Featherweights live on Sky Sports.

McArthur faces Derry Mathews in the second fight of the night at the York Hall in Bethnal Green, east London, and should he get past the Liverpudlian, he will face the winner of the first quarter-final between The Mongolian Warrior Choi and Ben Murphy in the semi-finals. On the other side of the draw lies unbeaten British champion Gary Sykes who faces Scott Lawton in the third quarter-final, meeting the winner of Steve Bell and Gary Buckland in the second semi-final in what organisers Matchroom Sport have already called the strongest line-up in the tournament’s history.

The 28 year-old from Clydebank has already appeared in Prizefighter when the tournament visited Glasgow’s Kelvin Hall in 2009 and his evening ended in semi-final disappointment after a clash of heads left him with a severe cut and a stoppage from the referee – that remains his only defeat so far in his 16-fight career and one he is keen to avenge in London.

“I don’t believe that anyone else in this line-up is better than me and that’s why I wanted to be in Prizefighter,” said McArthur. “There’s no easy contest on the night and I know that no-one will want to face me – I will take any of them on with real confidence and I have unfinished business in Prizefighter.”

Prizefighter Super-Featherweights takes place just two weeks after two former winners claimed major titles – with Welshman Gavin Rees claiming the vacant British Lightweight title in Newport and Irish fighter Willie Casey winning the European Super-Bantamweight belt in Limerick. McArthur believes that winning on Saturday night in London could see him join the Welsh and Irish boxers in fighting for a belt on home turf in Scotland.

“There’s a lot of fighters out there that are happy to just stroll along, fighting journeymen and keeping an unbeaten record but you are in this game to fight the best and be the best,” said McArthur. “I don’t want to keep a half-decent record going, get a shot and fall short – I want to get there straight away and winning Prizefighter would put me to the top of the queue.”

“This fight means a lot to me. I’m really happy to be the main event in this show and I think that’s what motivated me to train so hard the last few months. I’m just working on a few things today and sparring a bit, but I feel great and I’m ready to go for Friday.

“(Wilcox) sounds like a very powerful wrestler who has good hands. I’ll be ready to use my game plan, though, based on what I know about him.

“I left my last fight to the judges, so I’m going to try to not make that mistake again and finish the fight in three rounds. If I can’t, I’m going to dominate the three rounds and not leave any doubt in anyone’s mind about who won.”

WES SHIVERS

“A lot of people are saying this guy doesn’t have a good record and they’re underestimating him. I’m not doing that by any means. I know the guys he’s fought and I know they’re super tough and that he’s tough. He wouldn’t have taken this fight if he wasn’t ready so I’m coming in there prepared for a war.

“When I got the phone call to fight in STRIKEFORCE, it was a big deal to me. Besides the fact that this is in my home state, I’ve always prided myself in being a local guy who has tried to help the sport grow here and to be a part of a major organization when it comes to my hometown means a lot to me.

“Stylistically, this is a very good matchup for me. I’ve had the privilege of seeing my opponent fight on two previous occasions. Going in, I’m very confident about my technique versus his technique.

“It’s kind of a surreal feeling to be fighting on such a big card. There have been a few televised fights here but, this is by far the biggest show to come here. None of them have carried the reputation that STRIKEFORCE has. Just to be a part of it, I feel honored.”

JEREMIAH RIGGS

“I’ve actually trained with James. That’s something that a lot of people might not know. I feel good about it, though. I had a great camp at Hit Squad. This is probably the best I’ve felt in my career mentally and physically.

“He’s a stand up guy and I’m a stand up guy, but I think I have an edge as far as wrestling and the ground game goes. I don’t take anyone lightly. He better have his chin buckled up because once that cage door shuts and the bell rings, I’m coming for him.

“I’m coming off a three-fight win streak. I really believe I’ve got what it takes to get in there with some of the big names. I’m not looking past this fight, though. I want to show people how hard I’ve been working to get to this point. If anyone makes any mistakes, it’s going to be him and I’m going to make him pay.”

Crowd favorite DeJesus has hands full with Miller

Lemoore, Calif. –Micah Miller and Tachi Palace Fights Featherweight champ Isaac DeJesus know little about each other, but are ready to tangle in their upcoming showdown on Thursday, December 2 at the Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino in Lemoore, Calif.

The pair square off in the co-main event of Tachi Palace Fight’s 7 “Deck the Halls” which will stream live and free on MMAJunkie.com at 5:30 p.m.(PST) with MMAJunkie’s John Morgan, Tachi Palace Fight’s flyweight champ Ulysses Gomez and Fresno’s B95 Andre Covington cageside with the call.

The stream will be blacked out to fans within 100 mile radius of the Palace unless there is a sellout.

“I don’t know much about (DeJesus). He’s a good kick boxer and very fast, but I haven’t seen a lot of his fights. I remember he kicks hard,” said Miller (15-4), who won a pivotal fight in September against Diego Saraiva to earn the No. 1 contender spot.

“He’s the champ and that’s what I want, so that’s all I really need to know.”

Miller’s victory over Saraiva (18-10-1) was one of his biggest in his career.

“The Diego fight was a big step up in competition for me. I probably threw like a million punches in that fight. I really enjoyed it and I think that was one of the biggest wins in my career,” Miller said.

Miller will now have to do it again and against one of Tachi Palace Fights’ most popular fighters.

DeJesus (9-2) from near by Stockton, Calif. last fought in July dropping a non-title fight to “Razor” Rob McCullough, who recently signed to compete in Bellator’s next lightweight tournament.

This will be DeJesus’ first title defense, since his technical knockout victory of Nam Phan, who is currently one of the more successful fighters on this season of Spike TV’s “The Ultimate Fighter” show.

“Micah is a tall kid and has some good ground,” DeJesus said. “I really don’t know too much more about him. He seems pretty balanced, there’s nothing too special about him.”

DeJesus moved up 15 pounds to take on McCullough, who he grew up idolizing, in a July main event. The Stockton striker seemed to be getting the better of the stand up affair until McCullough caught a kick, knocked DeJesus to the canvas and finished the fight with ground and pound.

“Since my last fight, I’ve been pinpointing my flaws in my standup and starting to strengthen my jiu-jitsu. I’ve been working at a camp where I’m now more of the focus,” said DeJesus.

DeJesus will carry one distinct advantage into the cage – the crowd.

“I feed off of my fans, all of them, even the people I don’t know. I draw my strength from the crowd and it’s a big part of helping me get up for a fight,” DeJesus said. “They help with my adrenaline in the cage and give me no fear when I fight. I fight for them; I fight for my crowd and my fans.”

DeJesus has become the biggest of the local, fan-favorites. And chants of his name during fights have become the norm.

“It’s not going to be a problem for me. All my trips to Japan to fight have helped me prepare for this type of stuff… fighting the hometown hero,” said Miller. “This isn’t nearly as bad as fighting in Japan where they all don’t like you, you’re really an outside and don’t even speak their language. The crowd won’t play a factor in the fight.”

In the main event UFC veteran James Irvin of Sacramento, Calif. takes on battle-tested Jorge Oliveira of San Francisco, Calif. Irvin (15-7) snapped 3-fight skid recently with a knock of Angel DeAnda. Meanwhile, Oliveira (4-2-1) will be fighting for the first time in over two years.

The 10-bout card also features Brazil’s Jussier da Silva (7-0) against San Diego, Calif.’s Danny Martinez (13-3). Da Silva is widely regarded as the world’s top flyweight and will put that to the test against Martinez, who makes his drop to 125 pounds after a successful run at bantamweight.

The Tachi Palace Fights vacant welterweight title will also be on the line, as Merced, Calif.’s Phil Collins (9-5) takes a huge step up in competition against Las Vegas, Nev.’s John Alessio (30-13).

Muriqi of New York via Kosovo has a record of 37-5 with twenty-three knockouts and will be back in the ring after a thirteen month layoff.

Muriqi won his first thirteen bouts before suffering a suffering controversial loss to Dan Sheehan on March 24, 2000.

Muriqi went on to win seventeen straight fights which included signature victories over Sam Ahmad (16-2-3) & Tony Menefee (77-19-1).

After a run where Muriqi went 4-2, he challenged former undisputed Light heavyweight champion Antonio Tarver.

Muriqi fought a valiant fight against the heavily favored Tarver only to fall short by a razor thin majority decision.

Muriqi has gone 3-1 since with his only defeat being a twelve round unanimous decision to former world champion Clinton Woods in Woods hometown in England.

Muriqi is on a two fight winning streak with his latest outing being a 2nd round stoppage over Tiwon Taylor on October 10, 2009 in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Judah of Brooklyn has a record of 23-6-3 with ten knockouts and like Muriqi, has been knocking on the doorstep of major fights since he turned pro in 1999.

Brian Lawrence Says ‘Ben Murphy Can Stop Choi In Two.’

Ben Murphy has drawn WBU/WBF Featherweight World Champion Choi Tseveenpurev in the first round of the Matchroom Sports Prizefighter – Super Featherweights which takes place at York Hall in Bethnal Green, London on Saturday 20th November.

Following a training session, at the Ultrachem TKO Gym in Canning Town, Ben simply stated, “Well, he’s strong, but I’m gonna be stronger than him”.

Whilst Ben stayed true to form with a short sharp statement, his manager/trainer Brian Lawrence gave a more in depth view of his charge and the fight with Choi by saying, “We’ve got Choi in the first fight and it’s really like bringing the pigeon to the cat.

You know I just feel Ben will be too strong, too aggressive. I mean everything that Choi’s got Ben’s got in abundance.

Choi’s a Featherweight and Ben’s a Lightweight, that’s gonna tell in the fight. You know, Choi might not get past the first couple of rounds. You’ve got to remember Ben hits like a Middleweight.”
