Showdown at the Crowne – San Diego’s Biggest Little Fight

Bobby D. Presents and Jorge Marron Productions are bringing live boxing to Mission Valley. The next installment of the Coors Light Boxing Series, billed as “Showdown at the Crowne – San Diego’s Biggest Little Fight,” will be held Thursday, November 18, 7pm at the Crowne Plaza Hotel San Diego on Hotel Circle North for the first time.

This event showcases two of San Diego’s biggest names in local boxing, Lester “El Cubanito” Gonzalez (11-0-1, 6 KO’s) and Chris “The Last Chapter” Chatman (8-1, 4 KO’s) fighting it out for the California State Super Welterweight title.

It’s rare when you have two very good boxers from the same area fighting against one another. Adding to the intrigue is that both combatants are left-handed and have trained with many of the same sparring partners. In other words, the boxers and their corners will undoubtedly know the other fighter’s strengths and weaknesses.

The 32-year-old Gonzalez is a Cuban defector who hails from Havana. His co-manager, Lou Messina, recently decided to take Gonzalez to see David Gutierrez, a former undefeated pro-boxer and well-respected trainer. Many local pundits consider Gutierrez as among the best trainers in San Diego. With the stakes so high and the difference in skill levels so meager for the upcoming fight, Messina wanted to see if Gutierrez could offer Gonzalez an edge. After the initial two-hour workout, Gutierrez conferred with both Messina and Gonzalez and a plan was set in motion to go forward with Gonzalez’s training at the Gutierrez gym.

Gonzalez’ native country has a storied history of producing great boxers, including Kid Gavilan (107-30-6); Juan Carlos “Pantera Negra” Gomez (48-2-0); Jose Legra (133-12-4); Luis Manuel “El Feo” Rodriguez (107-13-0); and renowned heavyweights Teófilo Stevenson and Félix Savón. Together, the pair dominated every world heavyweight amateur championship from 1972 to 2000.

In Gonzalez’s last fight, he was the recipient of a head butt from Ibraheim King and though the gash brought blood streaming down his face, Gonzalez refused to quit. He persevered to win a unanimous decision. After the fight the wound needed 11 stitches to close. Gonzalez has proven the will to do whatever it takes to maintain his unblemished record, just as fellow Cubans Erislandy Lara (13-0), Odlanier Solis (16-0), and Yuriorkis Gamboa (19-0), who presently fight out of Miami, have done.

“Any fight I have is more experience. I think with every fight we grow,” Gonzalez said. “I feel very confident in myself.”

Gonzalez’s opponent on November 18th is also a transplant to San Diego. Chris Chatman grew up on the South side of Chicago. While fulfilling his Navy commitment on the USS Pinkney here in San Diego, Chatman began to train at City Boxing in downtown with Sergio Melendrez. Then before exiting the Navy, he caught the attention and received the support of City Boxing’s owner Mark Dion. With Dion’s guidance Chatman went on to have a successful amateur career including a Navy Championship, a Golden Gloves Title and a bronze medal in the Nationals. Shortly after that point the decision was made that Chatman was going to turn pro. Under the advice of Dion, Chatman started to train with another one of City Boxing’s experienced trainers, Vernon Lee. Lee taught Chatman the “Philly” stick and move approach of the sport. With both Chatman and Dion knowing the importance to learn different styles and techniques, Chatman is now currently being trained by former Filipino world champion and head boxing trainer at City Boxing Manny Melchor.

“I know this gentleman is going to test me and I’m going to do the same in return,” Chatman said.

Chatman’s last fight on October 8, was scheduled to go six rounds at the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario. For four rounds he went toe-to-toe with Alberto “Baby Dynamite” Herrera (7-0-1, 5 KO’s). Most of the spectators felt Chatman was the underdog and they were looking for their hometown hero to win easily. They didn’t take into consideration that Chatman’s only loss came by decision to Olympian Demetrius Andrade, October 3 last year in Rhode Island. Chatman’s camp took the fight on short notice, and he missed a golden opportunity to finish Andrade off in what proved to be too great a challenge given the limited time to prepare.

In the Herrera fight, Chatman scored an early knockdown in the first and another in the fourth frame, prompting referee Ray Corona to step in and stop the fight. Stakes are high for both fighters in the upcoming fight, and only one can come out victorious.

“My ability to be inconsistent is my greatest asset,” Chatman said. “I can be orthodox or I can be a brawler. I’m not the type of man to underestimate anybody.”

New champ Douglas & brother Dhiego dominate MFC 27

It’s Lima Time!

Douglas “The Phenom” Lima lived up his nickname with a scintillating performance that earned him the Maximum Fighting Championship’s world welterweight title at MFC 27: Breaking Point Friday night live on HDNet Fights.

Lima (16-4) fought through the grinding wrestling of Jesse Juarez in the opening two rounds and then let his submission skills go to work, transitioning from attempts at an oma plata to a triangle choke, and then eventually sinking in a fight-ending, picture-perfect armbar. Juarez (15-6) was forced to tap at the 2:36 mark of Round 3 before a sold-out crowd at the River Cree Resort and Casino, just outside Edmonton, Alberta.

For Lima, who hails from Atlanta, Georgia, it was his fifth straight win and capped an exhilarating 2010 campaign that saw him enter the MFC in grand fashion with a second-round submission win over Ryan Ford at MFC 26 and then take home the belt just three months later. Juarez, who was trying to become the third member of Team Body Shop to wear an MFC crown, had his nine-fight winning streak come to a screeching halt.

The championship glory wasn’t the only shining moment for the Lima family however. In the opening bout of the televised main card, Dhiego Lima (4-0) made his MFC debut a successful storyline when he dropped Bill Fraser (4-2) to the canvas with a one-punch knockout at the 2:36 mark of Round 2.

And just to put a bow on things for the Limas, the duo walked away with both the Submission and Knockout of the Night awards.

Ford (13-3) bounced back from his loss to Douglas Lima with a much-needed victory in his grudge match with veteran Pete Spratt. Despite having the home-town support, Ford got off to a slow start as Spratt (21-19) carried the action in Round 1, using his striking and some surprising takedowns. But Ford, who beat Spratt two years ago in a controversy-filled contest, found his rhythm in Round 2, finally getting Spratt down, pinning him in a corner, and alternating between ground-and-pound and submission attempts before finishing the fight at the 3:07 mark with a bar-arm choke.

The three other fights on the main card all went to the judges’ scorecards.

In a lightweight tussle, “Ragin” Kajan Johnson (18-11-1) was all over Ryan Healy from the get-go, proving he had an impressive all-around game plan that combined some effective striking, grappling, and takedowns. Johnson, who now fights out of Las Vegas, Nevada, nearly ended the fight in Round 2 when he took Healy (19-9-1) down hard face-first to the mat, but the hard-nosed Portland, Oregon, product showed his grit to force the fight the distance.

Johnson ended up securing a greater-than-expected margin of victory from the judges, taking it 30-26, 30-26, and 30-25.

Popular heavy hitter Dwayne “D-Bomb” Lewis of Fort McMurray, Alberta, inched forward in his quest for a shot at the MFC light heavyweight crown as he slipped past Razak Al-Hassan with a split-decision verdict. Lewis (13-5) was unable to fire of his strikes as he would have liked but did just enough to pull out the win over Al-Hassan (11-3), taking it 29-28, 28-29, 29-28.

Though he took the fight on short notice, Rodney “Sho Nuff the Master” Wallace (10-3) was rewarded for his gritty effort. Wallace, who fights out of Charlotte, North Carolina, was the more active striker and scored a handful of takedowns to walk out with a unanimous decision over David Heath (16-7). The judges favored Wallace at 29-28 across the board.

Manfredo’s body punching stops Berrio after 6 rounds

LINCOLN, RI (Nov. 12, 2010) — Fighting for the first time at home in two years, IBO Middleweight Champion “The Pride of Providence” Peter Manfredo Jr. displayed a strong body-punching attack en route to a win by 6-round technical knockout against Colombian power-puncher Jhon Berrio in the non-title, main event on tonight’s “Homecoming King” card at Twin River Event Center in Lincoln, RI.

Manfredo (36-6, 20 KOs), rated No. 11 by the IBF, Berrio (15-8, 11 KOs) pounded Berrio’s ribs until the Colombian was unable to answer the bell for the seventh round. “It was an ugly fight,” Manfredo said. “I got in some rounds. He was strong and wild. I didn’t want to get cut. I hit him with short shots to the body until I broke his ribs.”

In an intra-state battle between friends, Woonsocket’s Joe Gardner won a unanimous 6-round decision versus Keith Kozlin in a spirited contest for the EBA New England Light Heavyweight Championship.

Heavyweight Mariusz “The Polish Giant” Wach won his 23rd fight without a loss when the 6-7, 260-pounder dropped Galen “Bad Boy” Brown twice in the third round before blasting Brown into a deep sleep right before the bell ending the third round.

Marshfield (MA) welterweight Aleksandra Lopes won her third straight fight, taking all four rounds for a unanimous decision. Providence firefighter and undefeated cruiserweight, Eric Estrada, won a 4-round decision against Tobias Rice.

Winston Thorpe (3-0-1) and a game Hyannis (MA) heavyweight Jesse Barboza (4-1-1), who rallied from being decked twice in the second round, fought to a 4-round draw. Thorpe had handed Barboza his only loss this past May.

New Bedford (MA) junior welterweight Johnathan Vazquez (3-0, 3 KOs) kept his perfect record intact with an opening-round knockout of Ernest Butts III. Providence cruiserweight Dante Wiggins and Pawtucket middleweight Thomas Falowo had impressive, knockout pro debuts. Wiggins stopped Paul Gonsalves with one punch at 51 seconds of the first round, while it took Falowo two rounds until the second round before Odias Dumezil fell.

InterMat releases preseason high school rankings

The pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns have left, and the smell of turkey is in the air, the month of November is here, and this means the beginning of the scholastic wrestling season is upon us. In high schools across the country, preparation for the season has begun in earnest. InterMat is here to provide perspective on the upcoming season with national high school rankings.

Five-time defending state champion Apple Valley, MN is ranked No. 1 in the InterMat Fab 50.

In addition to the customary Top 20 in each weight class individual wrestler rankings, this season marks the return of national high school team rankings for InterMat with the Fab 50. After examining the lineups for many programs across the country, an elite group of four has emerged — Apple Valley, Minnesota, Blair Academy, New Jersey, St. Paris Graham, Ohio, and Brandon, Florida.

Starting the season in the top position will be an Apple Valley squad featuring five seniors that have committed to NCAA Division I programs, four of whom are ranked among the Top 100 prospects in the country by InterMat. In addition, the Eagles feature three other squad members that are ranked in the Classes of 2012 and 2013.

The seven wrestlers appearing in the individual rankings are senior Jordan Kingsley (112), junior Dakota Trom (130), senior Matt Kelliher (135), junior Brandon Kingsley (140), senior Destin McCauley (152) — the top-ranked Class of 2011 wrestler in the nation, senior Steven Keogh (160), and senior Jake Waste (171).

Nipping right on the heels of Apple Valley is perennial powerhouse Blair Academy, New Jersey. The Buccaneers also feature seven wrestlers ranked in the Top 20 of their weight class: freshman Joey McKenna (103), senior Evan Silver (119), senior Caleb Richardson (125), junior Mark Grey (130), junior Robbie Preston (135), senior Austin Ormsbee (140), and sophomore Brooks Black (285). A pair of these wrestlers — Silver and Ormsbee — is ranked first in the country at their respective weight class.

Ranked third in the country is perennial power St. Paris Graham, Ohio, which has strung together a decade of dominance in which they have won the state tournament every year and doubled the next best in the standings on half of those occasions. The Falcon squad features six wrestlers ranked in their weight class: junior Ryan Taylor (112), senior Nick Brascetta (140), sophomore Bo Jordan (145), senior Matt Stephens (152), senior Kyle Ryan (171), and junior Huston Evans (189). Two others are not ranked in their weight class, but are ranked in the Classes of 2014 and 2012 respectively — Micah (119) and Isaac (160) Jordan.

Tyler Liberatore (Brandon, FL) defeated Matt Kelliher (Apple Valley, MN) to win the Junior National freestyle competition. Liberatore begins the season ranked No. 6 at 135 pounds, while Kelliher is ranked No. 7 in the same weight class

While the era of “The Streak” that was famously featured in the ESPN documentary “The Season” is more or less gone, the elements of what make the Brandon, Florida program special remain. Those being tremendous coaching led by legendary head coach Russ Cozart, a tremendous feeder program, and a major commitment to off-season wrestling. This squad features six nationally ranked wrestlers, all of whom were Junior National All-Americans this past summer in freestyle and/or Greco-Roman: junior Colton Howell (103), junior Rossi Bruno (125), sophomore Kevin Norstrem (130), junior Tyler Liberatore (135), junior Clark Glass (152), and senior Wally Figaro (160).

Testing yourself outside of the season in major, competitively relevant platforms — and performing at a high level in these opportunities — is a key element in growing as a wrestler, as well as a common thread among the majority of those in the national rankings. This is in particular the case for wrestlers towards the top, and at the top, of the national rankings.

There will knockout action in and out of the ring. Generating equal excitement at the events and within the community will be The Matador KnockOut Girls, the team’s secret promotional weapon.

In addition to Warren, an extremely skilled and gifted group of boxers has been assembled, including several local products such as Javier Torres, a hard-hitting heavyweight from Pico Rivera. The team trains at the famed ROCK GYM in Carson, Calif.

Title fight official for MFC 27: Full weigh-in results for Breaking Point

Both fighters vying for the MFC world welterweight title had no problems on the scale during the official weigh-in for MFC 27: Breaking Point held Thursday, Nov. 11 at the world-famous West Edmonton Mall.

For the first time in company history, the weigh-in, which was hosted by HDNet Fights’ play-by-play voice Michael Schiavello, was also streamed live on the Internet.

Co-challenger Jesse Juarez (15-5) of Lakewood, California, hit the scale at 169.2 pounds while rival challenger Douglas “The Phenom” Lima (15-4), who fights out of Atlanta, Georgia, stepped off at 168.8 pounds. Juarez is attempting to become the third member of the Body Shop team to hold MFC championship gold, following in the footsteps of reigning lightweight champ Antonio McKee and former light heavyweight title-holder Emanuel Newton.

The title fight will cap a nine-fight card emanating from the River Cree Resort and Casino, just outside Edmonton, Alberta, on Friday, Nov. 12, with the main card of six fights airing live on HDNet Fights.

In the hotly anticipated welterweight matchup, veteran Pete “The Secret Weapon” Spratt was bang-on the target at 170, while home-town favorite Ryan “The Real Deal” Ford hit 170.6.

Both light heavyweight bouts on the main card also saw their fighters have no trouble on the scale. Dwayne Lewis (11-5) of Fort McMurray, Alberta, hit the target dead-on at 205, while his opponent “Razor” Razak Al-Hassan (11-2) of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, touched at 204.4. Meanwhile, Rodney Wallace (9-3) of Charlotte, North Carolina, and David Heath (16-6) of Tulsa, Oklahoma, hit identical marks of 203.4 for their showdown.

Witherspoon, twenty-eight years old of Philadelphia, PA, won his first twenty-three bouts with fifteen knockouts as he defeated the likes of Michael Alexander (11-0); Talmadge Giffis (24-6-3); Jonathan Haggler (18-1); which set up a big showdown with fellow undefeated and rising star Chris Arreola (23-0)

On June 21, 2008 Arreola scored a third round disqualification win in a fight that Witherspoon boxed well but decided “To bring out the Philly in him” and slug with the heavy handed Arreola.

Witherspoon went on to win three consecutive starts which included an eighth round stoppage over Adam “Swamp Donkey” Richards (21-1) on the undercard of the Jermain Taylor – Jeff Lacy battle in Memphis, Tennessee.

In his last bout, Witherspoon took out perennial contender Livin Castillo (16-8) in seven rounds as part of SPARTAN FIGHT PROMOTIONS: BATTLE I on August 28th at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City.

Witherspoon is a graduate of St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia and has a degree in Pharmaceutical Sales and he is very involved in the community as he is a mentor in many youth groups in the tri-state area

Mejias of Paterson, New Jersey sports a record of 11-5 with five knockouts and has faced top competition.

Mejias won his first seven bouts before losing a four round majority decision to “Punching” Pat Nwamu in 2004.

Mejias took four years off before coming back to win three in a row before a four fight losing streak to the likes of prospects Derric Rossy (22-2); Tor Hamer (10-0) and Bowie Tupou (18-1).

Mejias rebounded nicely in his latest bout as he scored a third round stoppage over previously undefeated Kimdo Boykin (4-0) on September 11 in Albany, New York.

An exciting undercard featuring some of the best prospects in the area that will include Light Heavyweight Lavarn “Baby Bowe” Harvell (6-0, 2 KO’s) of Atlantic City; Super Middleweight Joel De La Paz (5-0, 4 KO’s) of Atlantic City; Son of the former Heavyweight champion, Isiah Seldon (2-0, 1 KO) in a Middleweight bout; Jr. Middleweight Ismael Garcia (1-0) of Millville, NJ; Joey Tiberi (1-0, 1 KO) will fight a four round Super Featherweight bout; Rounding out the card will be undefeated Super Featherweight Keenan Smith (2-0) of Philadelphia, PA in a four round bout.
