DALLAS (November 11, 2010) HDNet, your home for MMA, is bringing you an action-packed line up of LIVE MMA action and expert analysis tomorrow night, Friday, November 12.

“HDNet Fights: Maximum Fighting Championship – Breaking Point” airs LIVE from The River Cree Casino in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada at 10:00 p.m. ET. In the main event of the evening, rising stars will collide as Douglas Lima (16-4) meets Jesse Juarez (15-5) for the MFC Welterweight title. The participants bring a combined 13-fight winning streak into the ring in what promises to be a hotly contested affair.

In the co-main event of the evening, Ryan “The Real Deal” Ford (12-3) meets Pete “The Secret Weapon” Spratt (21-18) in a rematch of their controversial 2008 bout. On that night Ford was victorious via rear naked choke, but landed two uncontested (and some would say illegal) blows after the bell in the first round. NEW YORK (Nov. 11, 2010) – Former NFL player-turned-Mixed Martial Arts fighter, popular heavyweight Wes Shivers, of Brandon, Miss., returns to the cage to face Goldman Butler, of Tupelo, Miss., in the top undercard fight of a STRIKEFORCE Challengers event in Jackson, Miss., on Friday, Nov. 19, at Jackson Convention Complex LIVE on SHOWTIME® at 11 p.m. ET/PT, (delayed on the West Coast).

“I’ve been kicking it around for awhile that I wanted to get back in there,” said Shivers, a star offensive tackle at Mississippi State who was drafted by the Tennessee Titans where he saw action in three games. He also played for the Atlanta Falcons before being released and walking away from the game.

“I didn’t really have any motivation to get back to training. I got the phone call from (local promoter) Dave Ferguson who asked me if I wanted to fight again. I thought it was a great opportunity to be able to fight in front of my home crowd. Not to mention it’s a STRIKEFORCE show. I had to take the opportunity.”

In the main event on the first STRIKEFORCE event in Mississippi, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Vitor “Shaolin” Ribeiro (20-4) will face Justin “The Silverback” Wilcox (9-3) of Cincinnati in a lightweight (155 pounds) match.

The 33-year-old, 6-foot-8 Shivers (7-1), a Rankin County Deputy Sheriff, will take on Goldman (1-3) during the non-televised portion of a card that will include many fighters from Mississippi and Tennessee.

Shivers said it was a lifelong dream to play in the NFL, but he has no regrets over his short-lived NFL career, which ended in 2001.

“Any kid growing up in America wants to play a pro sport and I accomplished that goal,” he said. “When I got in there I realized what the whole business was about and it really wasn’t my cup of tea. I saw an opportunity to walk away from the game without any regrets and I did it. Looking back, I still don’t have any regrets. It’s a business. Like any sport, if you take the fun out of it, it’s not worth playing anymore.

“I had several opportunities to go other places after I was released. I just decided I could do more with my life than play football.”

Shivers started training for MMA as the sport began to get hugely popular in Mississippi and he had his first professional fight at the end of 2005.

“I just loved the competitiveness of it and testing myself on a daily basis,” he said.

Before Shivers and Butler tangle, Jacob “Pyscho” Noe (3-1) of Memphis, Tenn., will take on Wesley “Pitbull” Little (2-4) of Columbus, Miss.

Other pro bouts will pit four middleweights (185 pounds) against one another: Jeremiah “Bigg Rigg” Riggs (6-5) of Vicksburg, Miss., meets Jason Sharp (7-2) of Biloxi, Miss., while Jamie Houston of Olive Branch, Miss., takes on Dave Martin of Southhaven, Miss., in both fighter’s pro debuts.

Among the scheduled amateur undercard bouts: Anthony Mitchel (4-1), Madison, Miss., vs. Jeffrey Hedgepeth (2-1), Silver Creek, Miss, at a catch weight of 200 pounds; Brian “The Law” Hall (2-1), Memphis, Tenn., vs. Thomas “Die Hard Kid” Vasquez (14-3), Horn Lake., Miss., in a bantamweight (135 pounds) bout; and in welterweight (170 pounds) fights, Joel Cooper (9-2), Jackson, Tenn., vs. Brian Burse (8-1), Corinth, Miss.; and Travis Robertson (8-3), Memphis, Tenn., vs. Ken DuBoise (2-0), Jackson, Miss.

The 185 competitor is not just a UFC fighter, he’s also the Executive Director of Hire Heroes USA. Stann’s next big fight will be against UFC Veteran Chris “the Crippler” Leben January 1st, 2011

About Brian Stann: Brian comes to HHUSA from the United States Marine Corps, having left active duty in May 2008 as a Captain. He received his commission through the United States Naval Academy, where he excelled in football as a linebacker and earned a degree in Economics. Brian’s military career included two tours in Operation Iraqi Freedom as an Infantry Officer in both the Al Qaim and Habbiniyah regions. In recognition of his valiant actions during an ambush by Iraqi insurgents, Brian was awarded the Silver Star, the nation’s third highest military honor.
As he neared the conclusion of his military service, Brian became increasingly involved with mixed martial arts. He made his World Extreme Cagefighting debut in June 2006 and became the WEC Light Heavyweight champion in March 2008. Brian made his UFC debut in April 2009.

Brian is excited about the opportunity to lead the Hire Heroes USA team and looks forward to the continued success of the program.

Paul Spadafora-like clone Danny O’Connor fighting on same card Nov. 20 at Mohegan Sun

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (Nov. 11, 2010) – Unbeaten junior welterweight prospect Danny O’Connor will be fighting Nov. 20th on a card headlined by the fighter he has been compared to since he was an amateur boxer, Paul “The Pittsburgh Kid” Spadafora.

The 2008 U.S. Olympic Team alternate O’Connor (13-0, 3 KOs) was supposed to fight Nov. 19 in his hometown, Framingham (MA), but the show was cancelled and the popular Irish-American landed on the Mike Acri Boxing Promotions-card against the same opponent, Humberto Tapia (15-15-1, 8 KOs) at Mohegan Sun Arena.

Spadafora (44-0-1, 18 KOs), the former IBF Lightweight Champion fighting in New England for the first time, takes on Argentina-invader Diego Jesus “El Camicero” Ponce (19-5-3, 3 KOs) in the 10-round main event.

“I grew-up watching Paul Spadafora fight on television and I’ve followed his career,” the 25-year-old O’Connor said. “To be fighting on the same card is an honor. We’re similar in that we’re smooth boxing lefties, white guys with a lot of tattoos, but we’re different in some ways, too.

“At first, I was disappointed that I wouldn’t be fighting in my hometown because fans that have supported me but couldn’t travel were finally going to have a chance to come to my fight. I can’t let that effect me, though, and I’ve put it behind me. I figure someday I’ll fight at home, but right now I’m fully focused on November 20th. I don’t know if it was good timing, good luck, or what but I’m just glad to be fighting. Boxing is what I do and would have traveled to Africa to fight. I’m just thankful to be fighting again.”

NABO & NABF Featherweight Champion Matt “Sharp Shooter” Remillard faces
(22-0, 13 KOs) Cuauhtemoc Vargas (15-4-1, 10 KOs) in the 10-round, non-title co-feature. The 24-year-old Remillard, fighting out of nearby Manchester (CT) is rated No. 5 by the WBO, as well as No. 6 by the WBC and WBA.

Hometown favorite, welterweight Addy Irizarry (8-4, 2 KOs), faces her stiffest test against IFBA Welterweight Champion and former U.S. Amateur Boxer of the Year, Jill Emery (9-4, 3 KOs), in a 6-round, non-title fight. Irizarry, a correctional officer from Hartford, has won her last two fights.

Boston super middleweight and former amateur standout, Mark “The Italian Bazooka” DeLuca (7-0, 5 KOs), puts his unbeaten record on the line against an opponent to be determined in a 6/8 round match.

Also fighting on the undercard in 4-rounders are Fall River (MA) junior middleweight Dustin Reinhold (3-1, 2 KOs) vs. TBA, undefeated Hartford lightweight Joseph “Chip Perez (4-0, 1 KO) vs. Ronnie Peterson (3-4, 1 NC, 3 KOs), Worcester (MA) heavyweight Keith Bianchini (1-0, 0 KOs) vs. Antonio Robertson (0-2), and Youngstown (OH) lightweight prospect Chris Hazimihalis (3-0, 3 KOs) vs. TBA.

“It’s a better atmosphere fighting on a show with boxers I know like Matt, Chip, Addy and Mark,” O’Connor concluded. “I hope their fans will support me and my fans will support them.

“My opponent is a durable, tough kid who has only been stopped once. I’m in good shape and can’t wait for the fight. I’m going to put on a good show for all of the fans and Spadafora’s promoter (Mike Acri) for putting me on this show.”

KEA Boxing’s welterweight sensation, Juan “The Beast” Rodriguez (4-0, 2KO’s) is ready to put his undefeated record on the line Friday night at Schuetzen Park in North Bergen, New Jersey. The hard hitting prospect from Union City, New Jersey will look to show the fans in North Bergen the explosive nature of “The Beast” when he tangles with Salim Al Quaadir (1-2) in what is scheduled to be the last four rounder of his career.

In his last bout, Rodriguez pounded out a majority decision victory over a very defensive minded counter puncher by the name of Marqus “Goose” Jackson (2-3, 2KO’s). Though Juan won the fight, he was disappointed in his performance. “My grandmother passed before the fight and I really lost focus,” said Rodriguez. She helped to raise me and I was really close to her. It showed in the ring as I abandoned everything I was taught to do and swung wildly for the knockout,” noted Rodriguez. “My punches became wide and it allowed Jackson to stay in the fight.”

“I immediately went right back in the gym and worked on tightening up my shots. My power is back! I am in fantastic shape and ready to show the world my true talents come Friday night,” exclaimed Rodriquez. “You won’t want to miss this one!!!”

The main event of the evening is an important ten round junior middleweight crossroads battle between Matt “The Predator” Vanda (43-11, 23KO’s) and Ossie “The Ghanaian Gladiator” Duran (24-8-2, 9KO’s).

The Gulf Stream Promotions card appropriately titled “Rumble in the Park” will feature some of the top local and regional talent matched tough. Edwin “La Bomba” Rodriguez goes to UK to be Carl Froch’s sparring partner

WORCESTER, Mass. (Nov. 10, 2010) – America’s leading super middleweight prospect, undefeated Edwin “La Bomba” Rodriguez, departed today for the United Kingdom to serve 10 days as a sparring partner for Carl “The Cobra” Froch (26-1, 20 KOs), who is preparing for his WBC title fight showdown in Showtime’s Super Eight Tournament, November 27 in Finland against Arthur Abraham (31-1, 25 KOs).

Rodriguez (17-0, 13 KOs) is coming off of a scintillating performance last Friday night in the main event on ShoBox: The New Generation, stopping James McGirt in the ninth round for the vacant WBC USNBC super middleweight title in Fargo, North Dakota.

Rodriguez (17-0, 13 KOs), fighting out of Worcester (MA), had prepped for his fight against McGirt by sparring two weeks in Australia with middleweight Danny Geale (23-1, 14 KOs), who knocked out former IBF middleweight champion Roman Karmazin in their recent IBF eliminator fight.

In his signature victory to date, the DiBella Entertainment-promoted Rodriguez cemented his reputation as the No. 1 super middleweight prospect in the United States. “Edwin’s fight against McGirt legitimized claims for him being the No. 1 super middleweight in the country, if not the world,” Rodriguez’ manager Larry Army proclaimed. “Sparring in Australia was an eye-opening experience for Edwin, who was over there with a top fighter (Geale) in the middleweight division. Sparring Froch, who was a world super middleweight champion, is invaluable for Edwin because he’s trying to get where Froch has been and remains. He will be able to measure himself as a fighter and man against Froch and that experience is priceless. Froch’s people wanted Edwin as a sparring partner because he’s an explosive puncher like Abraham.”

The 25-year-old Rodriguez has moved to the head of the class, past top American 168-pound prospects such as Marcus Johnson and Shawn Estrada, to where he rates, arguably, as the best among the next great wave of super middleweights prospects worldwide, along with 2008 Olympic gold medalist from England, James “Chunky” DeGale (8-0, 6 KOs), South Africans Isaac Chilemba (15-1-1, 8 KOs) — reigning IBO title-holder — and Thomas “Tommy Gun” Oostuizen (11-0-1, plus Australian-based New Zealand native Junior Talipeau (17-1-1, 5 KOs).

Born in the Dominican Republic, Edwin started boxing in 2001 and he developed into one of the top amateurs in the United States, compiling a solid 84-9 record, including gold-medal performances in the 2005 USA Boxing National Championships and 2006 U.S. National Golden Gloves Tournament. Rodriguez, who has dual citizenship in the U.S. and Dominican Republic, became the first Massachusetts boxer to win the middleweight title at The Nationals since “Marvelous” Marvin Hagler in 1973.
