Olympic Silver Medalist Stephen Abas Looks to MMA For Next Career Move

It’s been a long time coming. He built a 144-4 record on the way to 3 NCAA Championships. He won Olympic Silver in 2004. He and his brother Gerry have continued to share all they have learned and developed in the sport of wrestling.
He graduated from James Logan High School after two years as a star wrestler. Prior to JLHS he attended Canyon Springs High School, in Moreno Valley, California. He and his brother Gerry Abas were members of the Wan Tu Wazuri wrestling club at Oakland Tech, Oakland, California.
Wrestling for California State University, Fresno from 1998 – 2002, he earned four All-American honours at the D1 NCAA wrestling championships, placing fourth at 118 as a freshman and winning the next three years at the 125 pound weight class. He finished his college career with a 144-4 record, with 46 pins. going undefeated his last two college seasons.
Stephen Abas, now 32 has turned his attention to Mixed Martial Arts having retired from wrestling in 2008. Stephen now trains in Fresno, California which seems to be a better fit for this humble young man. That is where he went to college after all. Cal State Fresno.
He stands at 2-0 in his MMA career and looks to improve on that record and the perception that he is indeed one of the best wrestlers to ever walk the face of the planet.
Abas will join Takedown Wrestling Media’s Scott Casber for the LIVE broadcast of this years NWCA All Star Classic presented by The Marines, November 21st at the Selland Arena in Fresno, California.

New York, NY (October 20)…The whirlwind three-day, four-city, two-country press tour officially announcing “Dynasty: Pascal vs. Hopkins” came to a close today with a press conference at Planet Hollywood in New York City. WBC and Ring Magazine Light Heavyweight World Champion Jean Pascal and former Two-Division World Champion Bernard Hopkins had choice words for one another as they have since their first stop in Quebec City, Canada on Monday. Below please find what they had to say to each opther and about the fight over the course of the last three days.

“I am a boxer. I am 27 years old. I have been boxing almost all of my life ever since I was 13. I still have the same team and the same people around me. I have the best corner men. They are like an army.
“Bernard came into my country the last two days and he disrespected me in front of my people. I won’t disrespect him in front of people in his country because my mom taught me to always respect my elders.
“I would like to thank SHOWTIME for getting this fight on their network because when that bell rings it will be ‘show time.’
“I have heard Bernard say that he took Kelly Pavlik and Jermain Taylor to school. You know what Bernard? I went to high school and I went to college and guess what? I was an A+ student.
“Bernard is trying to put the pressure on me. He is saying that he is going to take me to school.
“I have nothing to prove. I have nothing to back it up. He has to back up his legacy.
“Bernard wants to be like me. This man says he has a 20-year-old body. I am going to show the world that he really has a 40-year-old body.
“Come to Quebec city. Come to the fight. We have beautiful women and handsome men…like me.
”I went to high school and I had great grades. I went to college and I have my diploma. You want to teach me – I hope you’ll be a good teacher. What I know about you is you’re dangerous and you’re deadly, but you’re dirty. That’s three Ds, so you failed the class.’
“I don’t see a legend in the ring” I see a piece of meat, and I’m a hungry dog.
“This is my time. I belong with the elite boxers. To be the best in the world, you have to face the best. Bernard Hopkins is a legend.
“Bernard knows what time it is. It’s about time for a new era. I’m the new kid on the block.
“I am looking to leave my teeth marks in Bernard Hopkins. I am a hungry wolf and I need red meat and I am looking forward to destroying and devouring Hopkins.
“Bernard said he was going to school me like he schooled Kelly Pavlik. I went to high school and I didn’t make good grades I made great grades, I went to college and I have a diploma and something I know about Bernard, he’s funny, he’s fast and he’s about to get f***-up so that’s 3 F’s so he failed the class!”

“This is one of the greatest motivations for me. To be in this position all of these years. Many people here have been to a lot of my press conferences. This one is a little different. Why? Because of the situation I am in right now. This is a chance to make another chapter of my career come to fruition.
“In today’s world, good is not good enough. Good is considered second. Second ain’t bad, but it ain’t first.
“The stakes and the bar are set so high that you have to be more than average. You have to get someone to look at you. Boxing has been my life for 23 years as a pro. aWhen I saw Pascal fight Chad Dawson, I thought to myself ‘Pascal is not the best guy in the Light Heavyweight division. I am.’ Then he called my name out as who he wants to fight. I grabbed my cane before I grabbed my teeth and got out of my chair and called Richard and Oscar to say ‘Let’s make this happen.’
“Not only did Pascal say it, but he made it come to fruition. We made it come to fruition. That is why I have respect for him as a man.
“I know how I thought and how I was when I was in my 20’s. I know that mentality. He believes he can beat me or he wouldn’t be here.

“For many people my age, I am that movement that if you do the right things. You can be a Bernard Hopkins in your own world and in your own way.
“If anybody understands life and time somehow finds its way back to you. It’s called ‘coming full circle.’My first title was won on SHOWTIME. The birth of Bernard started on SHOWTIME.
“He’s the King of the Light Heavyweight division… when he looks across the ring, his legs will quiver and his crown will fall because he will be looking at me, the legend, the first ballot Hall-of-Famer, an all-time great.
“You all know me and what I do. I end careers. Well, I may not end them but they never look good again after they fight me. I do that to everyone I fight.

“This kid is in over his head! I know he can’t swim so I’ll take him in deep waters.
“At 35, people thought I was old and then I beat Felix Trinidad. I’ve been blessed to fight so long. It says something for me to be able to stand at a podium and speak articulately.
“I’m the teacher. I’m going to take the student and give him an apple. And then, he’s going to be humble. He’s confident, but when the bell rings, that’s when I’m at my best.”

“In boxing we have to deal with a lot of nonsense, but when you are surrounded by greatness that we have been in the last couple of days with Oscar and Bernard, you know you what class can mean to a sport like ours. You guys bring that to the table 10 fold.

The highly anticipated Marianne ‘Golden Girl’ Marston versus Lana Cooper Featherweight clash, originally scheduled for September 11th, is now set to feature on Steve Goodwin’s Super Show ‘Judgement Day’ at York Hall, Bethnal Green, London on the 4th December 2010.
Marianne, who recently resumed her full fight training camp, which was suspended in August following the news that the planned September fight was to be rescheduled, at the Ultrachem TKO Boxing Gym in Canning Town, London, said of the news. “I was very disappointed when the September fight had to be called off, but that’s life, now I am fully focused on the 4th December.
I know Lana will be up for it, she always comes to fight, but I’m at the best gym in London and have the best team in England coaching me so I will be 110% ready for her.”
Marianne’s team, manager Johnny Eames and coach Derek Grainger, are taking her preparations seriously and have top class sparring lined up for her over the coming weeks, including drafting in Big Brother star and highly experienced Welterweight campaigner Angel McKenzie as her main sparring partner.
Additional sparring with unbeaten Bantamweight Laura Norton, Olympic hopeful Lightweight Ruth Raper and Lana Cooper’s previous opponent, Great Britain’s number one Lightweight Laura Saperstein, will be added to the mix throughout November.
On the planned sparring Marianne said, “What a coup, Angel and Laura Saperstein have both fought Lana before. They know her style and I’m sure their experience and advice will give me an edge on the night.
I can’t wait to start sparring with Angel again, we had some great sparring wars last year. I’ve also sparred Ruth before, she’s a class act, but I’ve yet to spar either Laura Norton or Laura Saperstein, both are unbeaten as pros, so I’m really looking forward to sparring them.
With quality sparring like this I will be so ready for Lana. I can’t wait for December 4th.”
Marianne ‘Golden Girl’ Marston versus Lana Cooper will be supporting Yassine El Maachi defense of his International Masters Light Middleweight title, against the seriously tough France based Haitian Jimmy Colas at the Steve Goodwin promoted “JUDGEMENT DAY” double title event at York Hall, Bethnal Green, London on Saturday the 4th December 2010.
Co-headlining ‘Judgement Day’ will be Ryan ‘Mr Attitude’ Barrett who will be defending his newly won International Masters Lightweight title, against a yet to be named opponent.
There are no less than twelve top class support fights including Marianne’s Ultrachem TKO team mate ‘Saint’ George Jupp, against a yet to be named opponent.

Bethnal Green’s own Jamie Arlain gets his second outing, as is Islington’s John ‘The Gorilla’ Ryder, who will be looking to emulate his stunning debut victory. Dec. 18 marks the amazingly ageless Hopkins’ first fight since he settled his 17-year long rivalry with fellow future Hall of Famer Roy Jones Jr. via lopsided 12-round decision this past April. The 6-foot-1, 45-year-old won the World Middleweight title the first time on SHOWTIME in 1995 and continued to defend that title 20 times, solidifying his place as one of the bestmiddleweights in the history of the sport.
In an incomparable 22-year career that began in October 1988, when Pascal was just five-years-old, Hopkins has defeated many of boxing’s all-time greats. Signature wins include a stunning 12th round stoppage of Felix “Tito” Trinidad in 2001, a ninth round knockout of Oscar de la Hoya in 2004, a unanimous decision win over Antonio Tarver in 2006 which crowned him Light Heavyweight World Champion and a dominant win over Winky Wright at 170 pounds in 2007. Perhaps the most impressive win of Hopkins’ career came in October of 2008 when he “schooled” a then-undefeated Kelly Pavlik in a shocking unanimous decision, proving to the world that Hopkins is a true testament to the phrase “age is nothing but a number.”
The 5-foot-11 Pascal, who turns 28 on Oct. 28, is looking to prove his status as one of the top fighters in the world. He catapulted into global prominence after he registered one of the year’s biggest upsets in his last outing when he defended his WBC crown and captured the vacant Ring Magazine Light Heavyweight title with a shocking 11th-round technical decision over heavily favored Chad Dawson on Aug. 14. Pascal performed magnificently against Dawson and was ahead on all three judges’ scorecards (108-101 and 106-103 twice) when the fight was stopped after an unintentional head-butt opened up a huge cut above Dawson’s left eye.
Pascal, one of the most highly decorated amateurs ever to come out of Canada, has come a very long way in a stellar professional career spanning less than six years. After winning the NABO, NABA, and NABF 168-pound belts in 2007, the opportunity to fulfill his dream of winning a world championship came in December 2008 when he traveled to England to take on the undefeated Carl Froch in his hometown of Nottingham for the WBC Super Middleweight World Championship. Pascal dropped a close decision to Froch in a heart-pounding back and forth battle that many boxing insiders called the Fight of the Year. The young Pascal took his first and only defeat in stride and just six months later, in his first fight at his new weight of 175 pounds, defeated the dangerous and then-undefeated Adrian Diaconu for the WBC Light Heavyweight World Championship. Dec. 18 will mark Pascal’s fourth defense of that title and his first defense of the prestigious Ring Magazine Light Heavyweight Championship.

PEPSI COLISEUM, formerly The Quebec Coliseum, is a multi-purpose arena in Quebec City, Quebec. It was the home of the WHA and NHL Quebec Nordiques from 1972-1995, and is currently the home of the Quebec Remparts of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). The Coliseum hosts the Québec International Peewee Hockey Tournament annually in February, with almost 2300 young hockey players from 16 countries participating. The arena was originally built in 1949 and has a seating capacity of 15,750. Pepsi Coliseum has also hosted many big concerts and major hockey events like Rendez vous 87.

‘La Bomba’ goes Down Under for Nov. 5 Rodriguez-McGirt showdown on ShoBox

WORCESTER, Mass. (Oct. 20, 2010) – Red-hot, unbeaten super middleweight prospect Edwin “La Bomba” Rodriguez has been in Sydney, Australia since last Saturday to work as a sparring partner for contender Daniel Geale (23-1, 14 KOs), as the dangerous Dominican prepares for his November 5th main event fight against James McGirt on ShoBox: The New Generation, live from Fargo, North Dakota.
The DiBella Entertainment-promoted show will air on SHOWTIME starting at 11 ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).
Geale is training for his Oct. 31st IBF super middleweight title elimination bout in Australia versus former IBF middleweight champion Roman Karmazin. Rodriguez is sparring Down Under with two southpaws, Australian super middleweight titlist Michael Bolling (12-1, 10 KOs) and 2004 Australian Olympian Jamie “Mr. Business” Pittman (19-2, 8 KOs), to prepare for left-handed McGirt.
“It’s a real step-up in class for Edwin,” “Rodriguez’ manager Larry Army noted. “McGirt is a seasoned veteran whose list of 25 opponents features only three with losing records. We’re thrilled to be fighting in the main event on ShoBox. McGirt’s tough but I don’t know how long he’ll be able to stand-up to Edwin’s vicious body attack. This fight makes perfect sense. There’s a lot at stake for both fighters: James needs a big win, Edwin needs a defining victory.
“Edwin’s being treated like a king in Australia. He told me that he’s never been treated as well in his life. In addition to the valuable experience he’s gained by sparring with Geale, Edwin working every day with two good southpaws will really help to get him ready for McGirt, too.”
McGirt is trained by his father, 2-time world champion and former Trainer of the Year, James “Buddy” McGirt. The younger James’ pro career includes victories against Raymond Joval, Jason Naugler and Stephan Pryor, but also losses to Angel Hernandez and Carlos DeLeon, Jr.
Rodriguez, promoted by DiBella Entertainment, and McGirt have fought two common opponents – Brad Austin and Marcus Upshaw. Rodriguez knocked out Austin in the third round and won each round (6) for a unanimous decision versus Upshaw; McGirt easily won an 8-round decision (80-70, 79-71, 79-71) against Austin but fought to a 10-round draw with Upshaw (94-94, 94-94, 93-95).
Rodriguez is rated No. 4 by the NABF and NABO, while McGirt is ranked No. 7 and No. 11, respectively.
Born in the Dominican Republic, Edwin started boxing in 2001 and he developed into one of the top amateurs in the United States, compiling a splendid 84-9 record, including gold-medal performances in the 2005 USA Boxing National Championships and 2006 U.S. National Golden Gloves Tournament. He became the first Massachusetts boxer to win the middleweight title at The Nationals since Marvin Hagler in 1973.

Diaz of New Brunswick, New Jersey brings in a perfect mark of 14-0 with nine knockouts and has quickly become one of the most exciting prospects in the lower weight divisions.
Diaz has fought on some of the biggest shows on the east coast as he has appeared at either Boardwalk Hall or Madison Square Garden seven times and in his last bout, Diaz fought in famed Yankee Stadium as part of the Miguel Cotto – Yuri Foreman undercard when he stopped tough Korean Jae-Sung Lee in six rounds.
Diaz two signature wins have come in the last year as he blasted out former Olympic Gold Medal winner Yan Barthelemy in six rounds in Madison Square Garden. Three fights later, Diaz scored an eight round unanimous decision over fellow undefeated Alejandro Lopez (16-0) in Key West, Florida.
Lucero of Scranton, PA via Mexico has a very respectable record of 24-5-1 with fourteen knockouts has fought the best in the world.
He went 21-0-1 in his first twenty-two bouts which includes wins over former world champion Juan Polo Perz and title challengers Rogers Mtagwa and John Lowey.
Lucero then challenged for the IBF Jr. Featherweight title but unfortunately he was up against a buzzsaw named Manny Pacquiao. The current best fighter in the world stopped Lucero in three rounds.
Lucero has only lost to the top featherweights as his only other losses have come to former world champions Valdemir Pereira and Daniel Ponce De Leon and former world title challengers Rocky Juarez and Jason Litzau.
In his last bout, Lucero scored an eight round unanimous decision over Robert DaLuz.
In a rare battle of top prospects, Jeremy Bryan (14-1, 7 KO’s) of Paterson, NJ will take on undefeated Ronald Cruz (9-0, 6 KO’s) of Bethlehem, PA.
Bryan was a former national Golden Gloves champion has one controversial defeat on his ledger. He will go up against Cruz who has scored some vicious knockouts and in his last few bouts has shown much improved boxing skills.
Glen Tapia (7-0, 5 KO’s) will see action in a Jr. Middleweight bout.
Tapia has been named one of best young prospects on the east coast. Tapia will be extremely prepared as he is in camp as one of the chief sparring partners for Pacquiao in the Philippines.
Amir Mansour is one of the most interesting heavyweight prospects around.
The Delaware native won nine straight bouts before spending eight plus years in prison. On the day he was formally released, He scored a highlight film stoppage over Samuel Brown on August 27th.
Mansour will not be in with a pushover as he will be taking on Alex Mejias in a bout scheduled for six rounds.
Mejias has a record of 11-5 with five knockouts and has been in with quality opposition such as world ranked Derric Rossey (22-2); Tor Hamer (10-0) and Bowir Tupou (18-1).
In his last bout, Mejias scored a third round stoppage over undefeated Kimdo Bethal Boykin (4-0) on September 11th.
Also seeing action on the card will be popular Light Heavyweight Bobby Rooney (11-3-1, 6 KO’s) and a Light Heavyweight bout between undefeated Anthony Smith (6-0, 4 KO’s) and Donald Bernard (8-7-2, 4 KO’s).
