RINGSIDE MMA: Payback – Guillet remplaces Gauthier, Mike Thomas honored

(For immediate release) October 19, 2010, Montreal – Some changes have been brought to Ringside 9: Payback, which will take place this November 13 at the Centre Pierre-Charbonneau in Montreal. The event will be headlined by a welterweight championship match between UFC veteran Jonathan “The Road Warrior” Goulet against the hard hitting Chris “The Menace” Clements. Tickets are on sale via the Ovation network for what should be a sold out show.

No strangers to success themselves, Clements is the current record holder for the fastest KO in history, 3 seconds against Lautaro Tucas in 2006, having taken the record from Goulet, who had set the record at 5 seconds 2 years earlier against Joey Brown. In 2007, Goulet almost retook the record having knocked out Travis Axworthy within 2 seconds; however it was recorded at 8 seconds due to the time taken by the referee to officially stop the fight. The fact that he was unable to regain what was taken from him by Clements only further fuels Goulet in this title fight. “If Clements did not beat my record, it may still have been mine, at least here in Quebec. Let me tell you that I was very upset when Chris Clements beat my record”, said Goulet before adding in a very determined tone, “Ultimately, I have a score to settle with Clements, because it’s something I still think about to this day…”.

With more changes being made on this card, one thing has become clear; that the misfortunate of some have become opportunities for others. Derek Gauthier, who was scheduled to be on the main card against Iraj Hadin, has suffered an injury during training camp and will be unable to compete. Fortunately, Samuel Guillet, who has just been signed by Ringside earlier this fall, and who was not supposed to fight until 2011 due recovering from surgery, has healed more quickly than anticipated and is ready to come back to the octagon. It will be Guillet, who is coming off a win in June against Jason Rorison, has been signed to face Hadin. Hadin is making his return to the cage after a long absence from competitive fighting which he took after suffering 2 straight losses.

Another loss due to suffering a fracture in his face after a very tough training session, Tommy Cote, a native of Victoriaville, must also pull out of his fight against Maxime Fecteau. For his replacement, Ringside decided to insert someone who has been a longtime rival in Gregory Carpenter. For Carpenter and Fecteau, this will be their second grudge match, with both fighters having faced each other in the amateur ranks. Fecteau emerged the victor in both matches, winning by guillotine choke and then by TKO. Both of these fighters will bring a long history into battle on November 13, but this time, with Carpenter hoping to erase the memory of those losses with a win in the professional ranks.

Also, Martin Trempe will finally make his professional debut despite losing his opponent, Steve Begin. He will now face another newcomer in Robert Masson of Terrebonne, as these two heavyweight titans are sure to let their gloves fly!

It is with great pride that Ringside MMA announces the first of what will be a long line of awards to honour individuals who have made their mark in the history of mixed martial arts in Quebec. It is for this reason that the obvious first choice for Ringside is to honour a man who without his contributions, the sport would never have evolved and become what it is today: Mike Thomas. Thomas is well known as one of the founders of MMA in Quebec, as it is practiced today. He has been a man of conviction who has never hesitated to fight for what he believed in, beginning as President of the IFC, which was the first ever mixed martial arts promotion in Quebec in 1996. The event was punctuated by the arrest of 9 individuals. Far from defeated, Mr. Thomas fought tooth and nail until all charges were dropped. This eventually led to the legalisation of the sport two years later in 1998, and its supervision by the RACJ, which was led by Mario Latraverse. Not only was the sport legalized thanks to the negotiations between Mr. Thomas and the Quebec Government, but a training centre was built on the Kahnawake reserve and these negotiations served to build a new bridge between the Provincial Government and the First Nations. It was then when Mike Thomas commented, “This only goes to show that if people are ready to sit down and talk, we can resolve any problem. If I die tomorrow, it will be with the knowledge that I had a positive impact in the world on which we live.“ Ringside will pay homage to Mr. Thomas for not only fighting to advance the sport of MMA, but for also being the instigator that led to the evolution of regulations and supervision of the sport, which, over the last 10 years, has produced amazing athletes who have who have excelled on both the local and international scene.

‘Cage of Horrors’ MMA show Friday night at Foxwoods

MASHANTUCKET, CT (Oct. 19, 2010) – The scheduled main event for Friday night’s “Cage of Horrors” pro-am Mixed-Martial-Arts show, presented by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Sports and Entertainment, Inc. (CES), in association with Foxwoods Resort Casino, has been canceled but a full, entertaining card remains intact at Fox Theater.

Veteran Daniel Straus (14-2-0) suffered a serious injury last week at training camp, forcing the lightweight to withdraw from participating “Cage of Horrors” show. A suitable opponent for Straus’ scheduled opponent, undefeated Brazilian sensation Magno Almeida (5-0-0), couldn’t be found on such short notice.

“Injuries, unfortunately, are part of combat sports,” promoter Jimmy Burchfield said. “We tried hard to find a worthy opponent to fight Almeida for the CESMMA lightweight title, but we ran out of time, and show must go on. We’re confident that fans will be entertained from start to finish by some of the Northeast’s best, young MMA fighters in highly competitive matches.”

The new main event, originally slated as the co-feature, features a rematch between the controversial September 17th victor, Luis “Rockstar” Felix (5-5-0), who fights out of Cranston (RI), and Boston lightweight Joe Dechaves (3-3-0).

The Dream Team of 1947 by Arno Niemand is now a Book, Niemand Talks to TDR TV

Every once in a while in the world of sport we are reminded about why we care. Arno Niemand’s new book, “The Dream Team of 1947” tells the story of how a small Iowa College upset all the major powers to win the NCAA Wrestling Championships in 1947.

Niemand, a 14 year old school boy in 1948 recalls the tattered cover of the Life Magazine in his coaches office dated February 23 rd. The article was about then Cornell College Coach Paul K. Scott’s improbable rise to the top in college sports most difficult competition, wrestling.

Niemand’s new book will be available in time for Christmas and is a must read for all coaches and athletes in every sport. The Book again is “The Dream Team of 1947” by Arno Niemand

HERSCHEL WALKER TO APPEAR ON ESPN FIRST TAKE, THE HERD & SPORTSCENTER THIS WEDNESDAY

WHO: Football Legend turned Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter Herschel Walker

Walker will discuss his upcoming, second professional STRIKEFORCE MMA bout at Scottrade Center in St. Louis, live on SHOWTIME® (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast) on Saturday, Dec. 4.

Walker will face an opponent to be determined in a televised heavyweight bout. MMA superstar Dan Henderson will take on former STRIKEFORCE world champion Renato “Babalu” Sobral at light heavyweight (205 pounds) in the main event.

The 48-year-old Walker, the 1982 Heisman Trophy winner and two-time NFL Pro Bowl competitor, is undefeated at 1-0 in his latest athletic endeavor – MMA. A 1999 College Hall of Fame inductee, the 6-foot-1, 220 pound Walker was also selected to Sports Illustrated’s NCAA All-Century Team that year.

Walker has been training alongside a host of MMA superstars at American Kickboxing Academy (A.K.A.) in San Jose, Calif., since last year. A longtime martial artist, he holds a fifth degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do as well as additional training in the combat disciplines of Muay Thai and Kenpo. .

With just two pro fights under his belt Belvadere’s ‘Saint’ George Jupp is already proving to be something of a sensation. So much so that promoter Steve Goodwin has invited George to be part of his double title headlined super show ‘Judgement Day’ at the York Hall, Bethnal Green, London on Saturday 4th December.

The invitation from Steve Goodwin follows George’s exceptional performance, against Latvian hard man Pavels Senkovs, at his ‘It’s Personal’ event back in September, where George thrilled the York Hall crowd with a true boxing master class.

Right from the opening bell ‘St George’ plain outclassed Senkovs with slick long jabs and lightning fast hands. Senkovs constantly tried to bully his way back into the fight but nineteen year old George showed a maturity that belied his tender age, by not being drawn into a dangerous toe-to-toe slugging match. After four scintillating rounds George was rewarded with a shutout 40-36 points decision, as well as a much deserved standing ovation from the packed house.

Following a sparring session with Ian Bailey, at the Ultrachem TKO Boxing Gym in Canning Town, London, George spoke briefly about his performance against Pavels Senkovs and his preparations for the upcoming fight. “That was a good fight, Pavels’ a come forward type but I kept to my boxing, just picking him off with my jabs and hard right shots. I just stuck with my boxing and won it easily on points.

Every time I fight I improve a little bit. I boxed well before but when I watched the dvd there were some things I think I could improve on or moved back to a different thing.

I’m not going to give anything away but we’ve been working on some new stuff in the gym so at my next fight there’ll be a few new tricks.”

‘Saint’ George Jupp against a yet to be named opponent will be on the support card when Yassine El Maachi defends his International Masters Light Middleweight title, against the seriously tough France based Haitian Jimmy Colas at the Steve Goodwin promoted “JUDGEMENT DAY” double title event at York Hall, Bethnal Green, London on Saturday the 4th December 2010.

Co-headlining ‘Judgement Day’ will be Ryan ‘Mr Attitude’ Barrett who will be defending his newly won International Masters Lightweight title, against a yet to be named opponent.

There are no less than twelve top class support fights including the highly anticipated all girl Featherweight clash, between George’s Ultrachem TKO team mate Marianne ‘Golden Girl’ Marston, and the highly experienced Welsh battler Lana Cooper.

Waltham Abbey’s Phil Gill, AKA ‘The Experience’, will be looking to increase his unbeaten record to seven, whilst Light Middleweight War Lord Michael ‘The Zambezi Hitman’ Norgrove will be looking to take his unbeaten record to four.

Bethnal Green’s own Jamie Arlain gets his second outing, as is Islington’s John ‘The Gorilla’ Ryder, who will be looking to emulate his stunning debut victory. So far Ryder has had just 90 seconds of ring action. That’s right it took him just half a round to beat the hapless Ben Denghani into submission.

Another single fight veteran with an early knockout record is Ely, Cambs Light Welterweight Tyler Goodjohn. His first victim, Dale Hutchinson, staying the course 264 seconds longer than Denghani did with Ryder.

Allen dedicates New York State title fight to brother’s memory

NEW YORK (October 19, 2010) – Guyana super middleweight champion Lennox “2 Sharpe” Allen has dedicated his New York State title fight against Nick Brinson, November 13 in Albany (NY), to the memory of his brother, 19-year-old Christopher, who died recently back home in Guyana.

The sudden loss of his brother forced Allen to pullout of his scheduled September 24 headliner in Franklin Park, New York versus Brinson for the NYS championship. The match-up has been rescheduled as the main event for the Nov. 13th ARES Promotions show in Albany.

“I was devastated when I heard the news and unable to focus on boxing,” Allen explained. “We were real close. We are the only boys and the two youngest with two older sisters. I am dedicated this fight to my brother and mother, Hannah. I think Brinson understanding my situation, losing a close family member, was a good thing. Now, I’ve been back in the gym working hard, and we’re going to do it November 13th. I’m over it as much as I can be. Boxing has helped; I take-out my frustrations in the gym.”

The 25-year-old southpaw Allen, who now lives in Brooklyn, turned pro six years ago in his native Guyana, and moved less than a year later to Western Australia, where he lived and fought for 18 months. The 6’ 1” Allen (12-0-1, 7 KOs) benefitted from being a sparring partner for Bernard Hopkins for his fight against Joe Calzaghe, after which he captured the Guyanese crown and then signed a promotional contract with Boxing 360.

“We want to thank Team Brinson for allowing us to reschedule this New York State title fight after the untimely passing of Lennox’ brother,” Boxing 360 Director of Boxing Bob Duffy added. “They’re gentlemen, real class acts who we thank for understanding. We’re also grateful to Adam Neary (CEO of ARES Promotions) and matchmaker Diana Rodriguez for putting Allen-Brinson on top of their November 13th show in Albany.

“Lennox is a fan-friendly fighter who has a lot of upside. He trains all of the time, whether or not he has a fight scheduled, and unlike a lot of fighters today, he really wants to fight.”
