With new four-fight deal, Lewis eyeing big result at MFC 27 against Al-Hassan

Knowing he was down to the last fight on his contract, Dwayne Lewis figured he had no other choice than to boldly re-affirm his position in the Maximum Fighting Championship.

Lewis went out and backed up the rare boastful statements he made in the lead-up to MFC 26, demolishing Mike Nickels in less than two minutes. Lewis staked his claim for a new deal and MFC Owner/President Mark Pavelich made his feelings known at the post-fight press conference, vowing that Lewis would soon receive a new multi-fight contract.

And now, with a fresh four-fight deal in hand, Lewis (12-5) will truly step to the forefront at MFC 27: Breaking Point when he squares off against Razak Al-Hassan (10-2) in one of the featured bouts on the HDNet Fights televised main card. Lewis barely had to break a sweat in his last outing as he worked over Nickels with well-placed punches that dropped the former MFC Fight of the Year winner several times en route to a succinct stoppage. The win was Lewis’s eighth knockout of his career and catapulted him into the high-profile clash with Al-Hassan.

“I have to admit that I love where I am right now,” said Lewis of his lengthy journey to a prominent spot on an MFC lineup. “It took me a while to get serious about my training and really set goals for myself. Now I think I’m doing pretty well.

“I’ll never be the most technical fighter but if the people can say I’m at least exciting to watch then I’m happy.”

Recently, Al-Hassan offered the same sort of sentiment – excitement and entertainment for the fans is top priority – so it’s a perfect match that these two bulls butt heads on Friday, November 12 at the River Cree Resort and Casino, just outside Edmonton, Alberta. Their clash is a sure-fire recipe for fireworks, and likely a top contender for the MFC light heavyweight title.

“Razak is going to be a tough fight,” offered Lewis, who has won eight of his last nine – the only interruption to the winning streak being his disappointing decision loss to Emanuel Newton at MFC 25.

“He’s big and strong and well-conditioned. He comes from a strong camp and has a good record with seven of his 10 wins coming by submission in the first round. But that being said I present quite a few dangers myself. It’s going to be a great fight. He’s never been knocked out and I’ve never been submitted.

“I don’t take any offense when he says he’s excited to fight me. I know he’s not going to take me lightly – that wouldn’t be very smart – and I’m not taking him lightly either.”

Lewis may be treading lightly now but come first bell, it’s a good bet to expect an explosion of raw power.

“I really don’t know if I can take him out in the same fashion that I did with Nickels but I will say this … my fight style isn’t a secret. I always look for the early KO.”

Echols new opponent for Spina

Mansfield, MA – The American Fighting Organization is coming to the small screen with the premiere of AFO Proving Grounds this Saturday October 2nd at 11AM on My TV New England. The show is set to air each and every Saturday at 11AM from October 2nd through Christmas morning.

‘Last Man Standing’ card changes for Saturday night at Foxwoods Resort Casino

MASHANTUCKET, Conn. (Sept. 30, 2010) – Due to a commission doctor requirement, 3-time world title challenger “Sucra” Ray Oliveira has been forced to withdraw from Saturday night’s main event fight against Joey “KO Kid” Spina on the “Last Man Standing” card in Fox Theater at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Conn.

“Last Man Standing” is being presented by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc. (CES), in association with Foxwoods Resort Casino.

CES has been granted permission by the commission to secure an opponent for Spina (25-1-2, 17 KOs), who is the No. 6 rated light heavyweight by the World Boxing Association. “Ray was cleared by a neurological specialist but the commission demanded a second test that wasn’t cleared,” CES president Jimmy Burchfield explained. “Ray did everything and more during this process and he was probably in the best shape of his career. One doctor said his blood pressure was unbelievably good. Ray Oliveira is a warrior who was 100-percent prepared, mentally and physically, to fight Saturday night. We’re working feverishly to find a suitable replacement for Spina, who doesn’t care about his new opponent, only that he’s fighting in the ring Saturday night.”

Wrestling Invites Program’s Alumni Back October 29-30
Golf outing and wrestle-offs are just part of the weekend’s scheduled events

Wrestling alums are invited back for several events the weekend of October 29-30

Sept. 21, 2010

TEMPE – Homecoming Weekend has been set for the weekend of October 29-30 at Arizona State University and the Sun Devil wrestling program is inviting all of its alums to return to campus and take part in several events. Along with the football team’s game with Washington State, the wrestling program will conduct its annual wrestle-offs while the alumni also are invited to participate in the ASU Wrestling Alumni Golf Event as well as a social gathering.

The weekend opens on Friday, October 29, when the current Sun Devils face one another to earn starting positions at the Maroon & Gold Wrestle-offs. The wrestle-offs start at 5 p.m. and will be held at the Riches Wrestling Complex (located east of the football practice facility). An alumni social will take place following the wrestle-offs with details of the event being shared that night.

On Saturday, October 30, the ASU Wrestling Alumni Golf Event will be held at the Legacy Golf Resort in Phoenix (24th St. & Baseline) and will begin with an 8 a.m. shotgun start. Following the golf event, a silent auction and award ceremony will be held with special guests in attendance to include former Sun Devil wrestlers and current UFC stars Cain Velasquez, Ryan Bader, C.B. Dollaway and Aaron Simpson.
The Sun Devil football team plays host to the WSU Cougars later that day (game time is to be announced). ASU’s annual homecoming festivities also will be held throughout the weekend.

Jimmy Lange to Battle Joe Wyatt for NABA Title Nov. 6 at GMU’s Patriot Center

Perry Ballard to Make Return Visit to Fairfax

FAIRFAX, VA (September 30, 2010) – On Saturday, November 6, 2010, popular junior middleweight contender Jimmy Lange (33-4-2, 23 KOs) returns to George Mason University’s Patriot Center to face Joe Wyatt (23-1, 15 KOs) in a ten-round championship bout for the North American Boxing Association’s (NABA) vacant 154-pound U.S title (NABA is a division of the World Boxing Association/WBA). Tickets, starting at $35, are on sale now at all Ticketmaster outlets including the Patriot Center box office.

Lange is coming off a decisive victory over Baltimore veteran Mike McFail last month at the Greensboro (NC) Coliseum Complex’s War Memorial Auditorium. It was Lange’s first bout outside of Northern Virginia since competing in The Contender’s “Fan Favorite” bout in 2005. In his last local fight, the Bishop O’Connell High School graduate scored a second-round KO of Jimmy LeBlanc on July 10, 2010 in his 10th headlining-bout at the Mason venue. While he gained national fame from his participation on the NBC boxing reality TV show The Contender, it’s Lange’s exciting fighting style that has made him a fan favorite throughout his career. Known for his straight-forward approach to boxing, Lange’s arsenal includes a strong jab, an unquestionable chin and heart and knockout prowess. His ability to connect with his fans is evident by the consistent drawing power to his cards.

Meanwhile, Wyatt, a former top 20 world contender, started training six months ago after taking off several years from the sport to concentrate on his family and career outside of the ring. Like many boxers, he believed he had “unfinished” business and now relishes the chance to return to the ring to challenge Lange. A Pittsburgh, PA native now fighting out of Richmond, VA, Wyatt lost his only bout to undefeated Reda Zam Zam for the WBA’s Inter-Continental light middleweight title in his last fight held in Denmark. Prior to that setback, he went 25 bouts without a loss, dating back to the start of his pro career in 2000. Within that time, he defeated George Klinesmith to capture the World Boxing Organization’s (WBO) North American Boxing Organization’s (NABO) welterweight crown.

Fans can expect another all-star undercard lineup featuring many of the region’s top rising stars, including three undefeated Virginia prospects. Opponents have not yet been confirmed for all fighters.

Fairfax, VA welterweight prospect Todd “White Lightning” Wilson (8-0, 2 KOs), a former Virginia Military Institute collegiate national champion, made short work of Calvin “Peko” Faggins in his last fight, using a barrage of punches to KO the veteran fighter in the first round. The southpaw fighting out of Annandale Boxing Club will step up to a six-round contest.

Scheduled to hold court again among her growing fan base will be the “Bolivian Queen” Jennifer Salinas (11-2, 4 KOs), making her fourth appearance at the Patriot Center. The Manassas featherweight went toe-to-toe against Nathalie Forget in what many fans called the “fight of the night” last July in Fairfax. However, she was on the wrong end of a close decision, suffering her first loss in more than five years. The LA Boxing instructor trains at Balance Gym in DC.

Junior middleweight Perry Ballard (20-2-1, 15 KOs) is set to return to the Patriot Center after appearing in the venue’s very first pro boxing card more than five years ago. The Martinsburg, WV junior fighter suffered his first pro loss at the hands of Lange before an electrifying crowd on September 17, 2005. A former three-time World Boxing Empire (WBE) champion, Ballard went toe-to-toe with Hector “Macho” Camacho in 2007 before losing via 7th round TKO to the former world champion and future Hall-of-Famer. Ballard, who drew with Richard Dinkins in his most recent fight last year, made national headlines outside the ring in 2006 when he tackled and helped restrain a robber outside a Martinsburg convenience store.

Three other fighters featured on the July 10th card will return to the Patriot Center this November, including Wilson’s middleweight teammate from Annandale Boxing Club and Chantilly High School graduate Zain “Tiger” Shah (3-0, 2 KOs), who most recently beat John Terry. In a four-round middleweight bout for local bragging rights, Alexandria Boxing Club’s and T.C. Williams High School graduate Brandon Quarles (2-0), will square off against LA Boxing’s Lawrence Jones (3-2-2, 1 KO) of Chantilly, VA, who also trains at Balance Gym. Quarles scored a unanimous decision over Vincent Batteast in his pro debut at the last Patriot Center card and won his second contest against Kevin Kebles last month in Columbia, SC. Last July, Jones’ bout against Tony “Mo Better” Jeter was declared a technical draw when the two clashed heads and Jeter suffered a deep cut forcing a premature stoppage in the first round.

Finals are set for Saturday, Oct. 23 (prior to UFC 121 with Brock Lesnar vs. Cain Velasquez) with an appearance by Jimmy Lange from 8:00 to 10:00 pm.
