‘The Boxing 360 Series’ Off & Running

NEW YORK (October 4, 2010) – “The Boxing 360 Series,” despite several obstacles, was successfully launched September 24 at Plattduetsche Park Restaurant in Franklin Square, New York. “The Boxing 360 Series,” based in New York, is scheduled to continue in December.

In the final eight days leading up to the show, Boxing 360’s card lost four bouts, totaling 26 rounds, due to a variety of reasons. The originally scheduled main event for the inaugural series show, between undefeated Boxing 360 super middleweight Lennox “2 Sharpe” Allen (12-0-1, 7 KOs), the Guyanese champion now living in Brooklyn, and unbeaten Nick Brinson (7-0-1, 5 KOs), of Geneva (NY), had been postponed due to a death in Allen’s family.

The new main event was scratched when a fighter reported overweight and his opponent refused to fight; one fighter couldn’t agree on an opponent and another never showed up.

Never-the-less, the show not only went on with four entertaining, competitive fights, everything ran smoothly and overall it was considered successful by any standards. “It wasn’t easy but we pulled it off,” Boxing 360 Director of Boxing Bob Duffy said. “We didn’t cancel or postpone the show because we felt obligated to all of the fighters who had trained so hard for weeks. It just wouldn’t have been fair to them to not have the show. This was Boxing 360’s first event and everybody really enjoyed the show – fighters, media and fans alike. Because we had only four fights on the card, we decided to drop ticket prices from $75 to $60 and $50 to $35, as a sign of good faith. All of the fights were fun to watch and we’ll be back in November with a bigger and better show. Boxing 360 is very committed to this series.”

The highlight of the card was the performance of Providence cruiserweight Joshua Harris (7-3-1, 5 KOs), who had just returned from Poland where he served as a sparring partner for WBC champion Krzysztof Wlodarczyk. Harris won a unanimous decision in the 8-round main event against Kamareh Pasley (5-5, 2 KOs). “Josh and Kamareh stepped-up to fight the main event and both of them put on a good show,” Duffy noted. “It was Joshua’s first fight for Boxing 360 and we’re high on him. Harris’ record is deceiving and he’s proven to be much better than some may think by just looking at his record.”

Ali Adams Vows “It’s My Time Now ” Ahead Of Showdown With Matt Skelton

London based Iraqi Heavyweight, Ali Adams is in confident mood ahead of his upcoming fight with former WBU Heavyweight World Champion Matt Skelton in the opening bout at the Matchroom Sports promoted Prizefighter – Heavyweights IV at York Hall, Bethnal Green, London this coming Saturday.

Following his final sparring session, with Damian Campbell at the Ultrachem TKO Boxing Gym in Canning Town, Adams turned to his coach Johnny Eames and simply said, “I’m ready” to which Eames drolly replied “Yeah, you’re ready, ready for four on the heavy bag”. A huge smile broke across the big Iraqi’s face, he was right and Johnny’s reply confirmed it as there was no discussion, no debrief.

After the training session Adams, who is one of the less well known fighters taking part in Saturday’s star studded Prizefighter – Heavyweights IV, made it perfectly clear that he was looking towards the Sky Sports televised event to ‘put him on the map’ when he said, “What he (Matt Skelton) has achieved he’s achieved, but this is my time. This is my big chance you know, it’s my time now.

I came to this country when I was sixteen, I had no family next to me, I was just all by myself. I was going to college in the morning and going to work afternoon and evening. I love boxing but I would only get to training at night , you know twelve o’clock, one o’clock. It was hard but I love boxing and carried on.

I turned pro three years ago, it was hard I have no sponsors it’s just me on my own. I keep on boxing, I didn’t give up, kept doing it, kept doing it. I’ve had twelve fights, I’m still struggling but I love boxing.

Prizefighter is my chance to show people I can box, you know, It’s my big chance, I’m not wasting it.”

Ali Adams versus Matt Skelton is set to be the opening bout of the night, with the victor in that fight facing the winner of the second bout between Kevin McBride, who was the last fighter to beat ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson and Tooting’s Franklin Egobi.

On the other side of the card the winner of the Sprott and Hughes clash will face either unbeaten Irishman Declan Timlin or Shane McPhilbin.

Cassius Connor ‘Spitting Nails’ And Ready For Adam Battle Oct 10th Showdown

Cassius Connor has left nothing to chance as he prepares for his second outing as a professional boxer at Miranda Carter’s Left Jab Promotions ‘10: 10: 10:’ event this coming Sunday at York Hall, Bethnal Green, London.

Connor, who drew his first pro fight against ‘Dynamo’ Daryl Setterfield at the K2 Leisure Centre in Crawley back in February, not only changed his training base and team but also secured top class sparring in readiness for his October 10th showdown with Battle.

Following a grueling training session, under the watchful eyes of his new trainer Alec Wilkey at the Ultrachem TKO Boxing Gym in Canning Town, Connor took a little time to talk about his preparations for the fight, “I’ve been training hard, double hard. I’ve got a new coach since I moved from James Cooks’ gym to the Ultrachem TKO Gym. It’s a great gym and a great team around me with Johnny (Johnny Eames), Derek (Derek Grainger) and my main coach Alec (Alec Wilkey).

Alec’s a lovely fella, he puts the time in with me. He’s changed everything, shows me everything, done my boxing really different. I’m now using all my assets more, he’s improved my speed, my power and that. I’m not the back foot fighter I was in my first fight.

Alec’s got me in the right mindset, everything’s gone double well. I’m fit as a fiddle and ready for action on the 10th.

I haven’t seen him fight but I’ve heard that Adam’s a come forward fighter and that he hasn’t got much other than his power and brawn, so I’m just gonna look towards my assets. Use my jab, I’ve got a good jab. Speed, in and out. Box him and move off, just be clever and don’t mix it up with him. If it comes to mixing it up with him, then I know I’ve got the assets to handle it. He’s got nothing to bring to the table that I don’t think I can deal with.

I’ve been sparring with the Southern Area Lightweight champion Ben Murphy, Ricky Boylan. Also sparred a couple of rounds with Bradley Skeet. I had the best sparring there’s nothing I’m not prepared for. Ben’s an absolute roughneck, he’s a powerhouse, a pit bull. With Adam Battle’s style its not going to be anywhere near as intense as those sessions. I’m just gonna get behind my jab and then get him out of there, sorted.”

Spina stops Echols in 3rd

MASHANTUCKET, Conn. (Oct. 2, 2010) – WBA No. 6 rated light heavyweight Joey “KO Kid” Spina stopped 3-time world title challenger Antwun “Kid Dynamite” Echols in the third round of tonight’s main event headlining the “Last Man Standing” card.

“Last Man Standing,” presented by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc. (CES), was held in Fox Theater at Foxwoods Resort Casino.

Spina (26-1-2, 18 KOs) hurt super middleweight Echols (32-15-4 (28 KOs) at the end of the second round and came out with bad intentions for the third. A powerful left hook found the range on Echols, who was on the ropes, and referee John Callas halted the action at 49 seconds.

“I was a little disappointed by the stoppage because I really wanted to knock him out,” Spina spoke about the stoppage. “If it went a little longer I think I would have hurt him.”

In the co-feature, New England super middleweight champion Vladine “Mr. Providence” Biosse (9-0) proved to be too strong, quick and talented for tough, veteran “Iron” Ariel Espinal in their non-title fight. Biosse, a former University of Rhode Island football player, pounded Espinal from the opening bell through the all six rounds, earning a unanimous decision.

“It was a tough fight,” Biosse said. “He came forward to fight. I underestimated when I saw his body yesterday. He didn’t look like he was in shape. I thought it would be easier than it turned out to be, He came to fight. I love keeping active. I’m going to visit my grandmother who raised me and be right back.”

Hartford middleweight David Bauza (6-0, 3 KOs) kept his perfect record intact by easily taking a 4-round decision from outclassed but game Jeremy Wood.

New Haven super lightweight Edwin Soto improved his record to 5-0-1 with a unanimous 4-round decision against Trenton Titsworth. New Haven super middleweight Greg McCoy (2-1-1, 1 KO) upset Reynaldo Rodriguez (5-2, 2 KOs) via a third round TKO in an action-packed match.

In a wild, back-and-forth bout, lightweight Derek ”The Surgeon” Silveria (3-0, 2 KOs), the newest member of Team CES, overcame a second-round knockdown to win by fourth-round technical knockout versus Phillip Bernette (0-2), who was leading at the time with one round in his favor and two even.

New Haven featherweight Luis Rosa (4-0, 3 KOs) remained undefeated, stopping Jose Velazquez in the third round. Hometown favorite, Mystic (CT) super bantamweight Karen Dulin, pitched a shutout, winning a unanimous 4-round decision against Kat De La Cruz.

Erick ‘The Eagle’ Ochieng On Webb-Concepcion October 16th Undercard

Light Middleweight sensation Erick ‘The Eagle’ Ochieng is back in action on Saturday October 16th on the undercard of Sam Webb’s defence of his British Light Middleweight title, against Martin Concepcion, at the Frank Maloney promoted ‘True British Fighters’ double title event at The Troxy, Commercial Road, London E1.

Ochieng, who under the watchful eyes of his manager/coach Brian Lawrence has been regularly sparring with Sam Webb, at the Ultrachem TKO Boxing Gym in Canning Town, as part of the Champ’s preparations, was last in action just a few weeks ago, at the Steve Goodwin promoted ‘It’s Personal’ event on September 11th, where in the clear ‘Fight of the Night’ he plain out boxed the experienced Alex Spitko for four rounds before swooping in to finish the fight with just 19 seconds of the fourth to go.

Following one of the sparring sessions, with Sam Webb, ‘The Eagle’ took a little time to talk about the Spitko fight, his upcoming fight on October 16th and sparring with Sam Webb. “First of all I thank god for the victory, it was awesome. I stayed alert and just boxed. I knew he was a tough fighter so I stayed focused and just used my jab.

First round I came out quick using my jab. He was heavier than me and I didn’t want him to get to my body.

Second round I slowed down and picked my punches laded a sweet, good uppercut and in the fourth round… The Eagle landed. I knocked him down, he came back up, I went straight back in with a couple of heavy body shots and the referee stopped it.

I had great support. I’d like to thank my supporters, They were very vocal singing “Eagle, Eagle, Eagle” from start to finish, you know. Yeah my support was awesome.

It was a great fight, but you’ve yet to see the best of me.

For my next fight on the 16th October, on the Frank Maloney show, I don’t know who I’ll be fighting yet, but I know I’ll be winning.

I’ve been sparring with Sam Webb. He’s the British Champion so it’s real good sparring for me. I’m loving it. It’s a real challenge and can only make me better. Quality sparring like this with a champion like Sam is something else, it lifts your game, it’s awesome.”

Erick ‘The Eagle’ Ochieng, against a yet to be named opponent, will be on the under card of the Frank Maloney promoted ‘True British Fighters’ double title show headlined by Sam Webb’s defense of his British Light Middleweight title against Martin Concepcion.

LOS ANGELES — SHOWTIME® Sports hosted a press conference Thursday at The Conga Room , L.A. Live, to formally introduce and discuss “BANTAMWEIGHT TOURNAMENT: WINNER TAKES ALL” that begins Saturday, Dec. 11, live on SHOWTIME at 9 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast) from Irapuato, Mexico.

In attendance was Ken Hershman, SHOWTIME Sports Executive Vice President and General Manager, the four world class boxers who will participate in the two-round, single-elimination tournament to determine the best fighter at 118 pounds – International Boxing Federation (IBF) champion Yonnhy Perez (20-0-1, 14 KOs), former world champions Joseph Agbeko (27-2, 22 KOs) and Vic Darchinyan (35-2-1, 27 KOs) and world-ranked rising star Abner Mares (29-0-1) – and their promoters

The semifinal matchups: Perez defends his title against Agbeko and Darchinyan and Mares vie for the World Boxing Council (WBC) Silver Belt The bouts are scheduled for 12 rounds. The winners of each semifinal will clash in the final in 2011 with the losing fighters competing in a consolation fight.

Each of the participants in the bantamweight tournament has previously fought at least one of the other fighters in competitive bouts, all on SHOWTIME.

The bantamweight tournament is promoted by Gary Shaw Productions for Darchinyan and, in association with Thompson Boxing Promotions, for Perez, Golden Boy Promotions for Mares, and Don King Productions for Agbeko.

Agbeko fought a great fight and Darchinyan had concrete between his ears, didn’t listen to his corner and I believe cost himself the fight, but Yonnhy finished the unfinished work of Vic by finishing Agbeko off.

“Abner Mares, who I have a tremendous amount of respect for, is the youngest fighter and was in an absolute war with Yonnhy. I thought Yonnhy won by one round but I thought Mares showed a huge amount of heart and courage, stayed in that fight and took it to a draw. Darchinyan is the oldest fighter on the stage, the one with the most experience. Everybody at SHOWTIME knows Darchinyan and they know how he thinks and they know when he fight, he comes to fight. He’s never in a dull fight.

“I want to tell you how you confident I am in Vic Darchinyan. This fight is in Mexico, but I told Vic ‘don’t worry, you are the best in the tournament.’ He said, “You really believe that?’ I said, ‘I believe it so much I called up Jose Sulaiman and we’re going to have a Mexican referee, we’re going to have three Mexican judges, a Mexican timekeeper and I know you’ll win.”

VIC DARCHINYAN

I want to thank Gary Shaw , Ken Hershman and everyone at SHOWTIME for putting on this show. Now, the whole world can see at bantamweight who’s the best. I am very happy for this tournament. I’m physically prepared all the time.

“I’m happy I’m fighting in Mexico. My style is a Mexican style, guys are coming to fight, coming for a show, so that’s what I’m going to do. Mexicans love my style. I am not against them, I am not against anyone. I’m just against my opponent. It just happens Mexicans have been my opponents, which is good. Mexicans are good fighters.

“The two other guys (Francisco Montiel, Nonito Donaire) that didn’t want to be in the tournament know they cannot be at the same level. Some of them think they are good, but if you’re good, get in the tournament. If you’re one of the best at bantamweight, come and fight. Mares is a good fighter.

“I’m going to be prepared for anything. No fear. I moved up to challenge other champions. The super tournament connects all the dots. I don’t want to defend my titles and fight No. 10, No. 15. If I fight, I collect all belts. The point is not who you can beat, it’s what champions you can beat. I want to prove myself and I want to prove to everyone I’m the best. Why worry?

“I happened to be at ARCO Arena in Sacramento in 2007 when pretty much an unknown guy came in to face a tough as nails Nicaraguan name Luis Perez. He had been the ideal bantamweight champion since 2003 Joseph knocked him out and sent him to the hospital. That’s how he catapulted himself to this stage. Later, in his career-defining fight, he met Darchinyan.

“It’s always going to be a good promotion with Vic, a lot of back and forth talking. The Florida commission used SHOWTIME’s clock and there was an extra minute in a round and in that round Vic knocked Joseph down. It was a wonderful fight and Joseph was fortunate enough to come out with a victory. Then, there was the “Halloween Thrilla” at Treasure Island on SHOWTIME where Yonnhy met Joseph. Yonnhy had a great game plan and I give him everything. In the 10th round there was a terrible head butt and Joseph got knocked down. The referee didn’t see it, and called it a knock down. Joseph feels like he has some unfinished business.’’

JOSEPH AGBEKO

“This is going to be a very nice tournament. The opportunity to meet the best bantamweights in the world is going to give me a very good platform. This tournament is the return of “King Kong.’’ It’s giving me the opportunity to get back in the ring. My trainer and I are coming together to make me the best bantamweight.

“Perez is a great fighter. He’s got a brave heart. I’m going to come very well prepared. I’m not thinking about Vic, I’m not thinking about Mares, I’m thinking about Perez. The winner will meet me.

“I think it’s going to be a very nice opportunity for me to fight in Mexico. They’ve produced a lot of great fighters and it’s going to be an honor to fight in Mexico.

“I’m very motivated to get back the belt because Ghana has no champion right now. They all have supported me and want me to win the title.’’
