Two Semi-Final Bouts Set For Saturday, Dec. 11

NEW YORK (Sept. 16, 2010)—SHOWTIME Sports officially announced today a series of high-profile fights amongst four of the world’s elite fighters in the exciting and deep bantamweight division. The two-round, single-elimination tournament to determine the best fighter at 118 pounds will begin with two semifinal bouts on Saturday, Dec. 11, live on SHOWTIME at 9 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the west coast) from Leon, Mexico.

The talented and willing field comprises unbeaten International Boxing Federation (IBF) 118-pound champion Yonnhy “El Colombiano” Perez, undefeated, world-ranked rising star Abner Mares, former IBF bantamweight champion Joseph “King Kong’’ Agbeko, and two-division world champion Vic “Raging Bull” Darchinyan.

Each bout will be scheduled for 12 rounds. The winners of each semifinal will clash in the final in 2011 with the losing fighters competing in a consolation fight.

Each of the participants in the bantamweight tournament has previously fought at least one of the other fighters in competitive bouts, all on SHOWTIME.

Perez unanimously outpointed then-defending champion Agbeko to capture the IBF belt on Oct. 31, 2009, and retained it with a disputed majority draw over Mares last May 22. Agbeko, in his outing before getting dethroned by Perez, retained the same title with a close, unanimous decision over Darchinyan on July 7, 2009.

The beauty of a tournament is that rankings and past performances can be dismissed once it begins. Each boxer starts with the same chance to make, and win, the final.

The humble, hard-working, 5-foot-11, 31-year-old Perez is looking at the tournament as a chance to continue to stamp himself as perhaps the premier bantamweight boxer on the planet.

“I’m excited to be included in the 118-pound tournament that SHOWTIME has put together,” said Perez, who held onto his belt by the narrowest of margins (114-114 twice and 113-115) against Mares.

“SHOWTIME has helped me reveal my ability to the world and I’m honored they will televise my next two fights. I knew the instant I earned my IBF bantamweight championship title that it would open a lot of doors for me. This is the first of many opportunities. I am going to get through this tournament as the reigning champion.”

The gifted, handsome Mares, who showed his class with a highly proficient performance against Perez, doesn’t anticipate any dull moments in the ring once the first tournament bell rings.

“Boxing fans know that the little guys always make for the best fights and this tournament is guaranteed to prove that again,” said the personable 5-foot-5, 25-year-old Mares. “This is a great opportunity for all of us to prove ourselves in the spotlight and I am excited that this fight will take place in Mexico with all of the support of my people for the first time in my career.

“Of course, I am also grateful and looking forward to having a rematch with Yonnhy in the final. I felt I did enough in our first fight to win a unanimous decision. I know if I do my best again, I’ll come away with the IBF belt.”

The 5-foot-5 ½-inch, 30-year-old Agbeko hasn’t fought since falling short against Perez in Oct. 2009, but feels he is ready to step in and re-establish himself as the man to beat at 118 pounds.

“I’ve always said, and believed in my heart, that I am the best bantamweight in the world,” Agbeko said. “Now it is time to prove it once and for all.

“I’m beyond happy and excited that SHOWTIME is doing a tournament in this weight class. This truly is an opportunity that I never expected, and I am going to take full advantage of it. It is my destiny to win it all.”

Darchinyan is by far the most experienced boxer in the foursome and has participated in more than twice as many world title fights (14) as the others have combined. He is as confident as always.

“I think that this is a beautiful thing that SHOWTIME is doing, but it isn’t a bantamweight tournament, it’s The Darchinyan Tournament,” said the 5-foot-5½-inch, 34-year-old Darchinyan, a former world champion at 112 and 115 pounds who’ll be making his 12th appearance on SHOWTIME. “Everyone who faces me will feel my power and be a loser.

“I owe Agbeko because he got away with one last time. But it doesn’t matter who I fight. Even the winner in the other bracket will be a loser because he will eventually have to face me and lose.”

LOS ANGELES, September 16 – With boxing’s present already well accounted for on Saturday, September 18, thanks to names like Sugar Shane Mosley, Sergio Mora and those of the rest of the pay per view fighters, it will be up to the future stars of the sweet science to make their own statements in undercard bouts at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles that night. With a lineup featuring Frankie Gomez, “Dangerous” David Rodela, Keith Thurman, Sharif Bogere, Lanardo Tyner and Kaliesha West, expect some fireworks before the big guns start firing on Pay-Per-View.

One of the most highly-touted prospects in recent years, 18-year old Frankie Gomez (5-0, 5 KO’s) signed with Golden Boy Promotions following a stellar amateur career and he has been thrilling fight fans ever since. Sporting a perfect pro record with every victory coming by knockout within three rounds, the East Los Angeles native will compete in a six round welterweight bout on September 18 against fellow Angeleno Ricardo Calzada (2-2, 1 KO).

Oxnard lightweight “Dangerous” David Rodela (15-3-3, 6 KO’s) broke a two-fight losing streak in May with a hard fought win over Eric Cruz and he’s back to the form that saw him defeat former World Champion Kevin Kelly and fellow prospect Gamalier Rodriguez. He returns to the ring this weekend to take on Mexico City’s Juan Manuel Montiel (6-3-1, 1 KO) in a six round contest.

A silver medalist in the 2008 Olympic trials, Largo, Florida’s Keith Thurman (13-0, 12 KO’s) has shown even more promise as a professional, as he’s been destroying his opposition with frightening efficiency. Having stopped 12 opponents in less than two rounds, including the 7-0 Stalinn Lopez in July, Thurman brings excitement every time the bell rings. He will look to add to his already impressive resume when he battles Portland’s Quandray Robertson (15-9, 10 KO’s) in an eight round junior middleweight fight.

21-year old Uganda native, Sharif Bogere (16-0, 10 KO’s) was a five-time national champion in his homeland before relocating to the United States to begin his pro career. Unbeaten as a professional, the talented Bogere already holds wins over 10-1 prospect Jose Hernandez and 58-fight veteran Ilido Julio. The Henderson, Nevada resident is looking for another big victory in his Los Angeles debut when he takes on Ciudad Juarez, Mexico’s Julian Rodriguez (17-19-4, 11KO’s) in a six/eight round junior welterweight bout.

Opening up this talent-rich event is an eight round junior middleweight bout pitting Houston’s Lanardo Tyner (24-3, 15 KO’s) against Los Mochis, Mexico’s Cristian Favela (19-30-6, 10 KO’s). Known as “The Pain Server,” Tyner has tested himself throughout his pro career and following a 2009 loss to Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, he has reeled off three wins, capped off by a ninth round TKO of highly-touted Antwone Smith in July. He will be in for another tough fight on September 18 against the veteran Favela.

An amateur superstar who won 98 bouts over the course of a career that saw her earn National Golden Gloves and Junior Olympics titles, Kaliesha “Wild Wild” West (12-1-2, 3 KO’s) has been boxing since the age of ten and at just 22 years old, she is knocking on the door of a world title. Unbeaten for nearly two years, West is coming off of a fifth round TKO of Vannessa Guimaraes in June and she’s ready for the biggest fight of her career at STAPLES Center on September 18.

Though she doesn’t own the same amount of amateur accolades as her opponent, South Carolina’s Angel “Non-Stop” Gladney (6-2-1, 5 KO’s) certainly has the same determination to win the Bantamweight World Title this September. A pro since 2009, Gladney has shown amazing power thus far, and with all five of her knockout wins coming in the first round, expect fireworks early when these two bantamweights collide.

PAUL “SEMTEX’’ DALEY SIGNS WITH STRIKEFORCE

NEW YORK (Sept. 15, 2010) – Top-10 world-ranked welterweight, Paul Daley, has signed a multi-fight deal with world championship Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) promotion STRIKEFORCE.

The 5-foot-9, 27-year-old native of London who fights out of Nottingham, England, has won two straight and six of his last seven. Overall, the cocky, brash seven-year pro is 25-9-2.

Nicknamed “Semtex” after an explosive that British armed forces use to demolish large structures, Daley is coming off a unanimous three-round decision over recent STRIKEFORCE signee, Jorge Masvidal, last Saturday, Sept. 11. It was the first time since July 1, 2006, that Daley had won a fight on points.

Daley is a freelance mixed martial artist whose style is an aggressive mix of striking, striking and more striking.

“I am a striker – there is no secret about that,’’ the exciting British bomber said. “I like to knock people out aggressively and quickly. That’s my game and no opponent’s going to change that. Almost all my fights are exciting and memorable with non-stop action.’’

Daley specializes in Muay Thai (Dutch style). He utilizes lead leg kicks often and possesses devastating knees and quick, heavy hands.

“I’m looking forward to fighting for STRIKEFORCE and would really love to fight (current STRIKEFORCE welterweight champion) Nick Diaz,’’ Daley said. “He’s a big name and a great fighter. Diaz would bring out the best in me and would be a great test.’’

Daley, who has compiled a highlight reel of impressive knockout victories, has competed against some of the best since turning professional in June 2003. Three of his most significant victories came against Masvidal, a 2:24, first-round KO (punches) over Dustin Hazelett on Jan. 2, 2010, and a 2:31, first-round TKO (punches) over Martin Kampmann on Sept. 19, 2009.

A former Cage Rage champion, Daley appeared on a STRIKEFORCE co-promoted card on June 22, 2007. On the undercard of Frank Shamrock vs. Phil Baroni in San Jose, Calif., he registered a second-round TKO (punches) over Duane “Bang’’Ludwig.

Daley was introduced to martial arts when he began taking karate at the age of 7. Besides England, he also trains in Holland. For a time several years ago, Daley was involved in a project with Mothers Against Guns in London.

About Rob: Rob McCullough is the textbook definition of a self-made man of the streets. Now a top-ranked lightweight MMA fighter and champion kickboxer, most would be surprised to discover that Razor Rob’s humble beginnings began when he left his family to live on the streets by himself.

“My mom couldn’t afford me. I come from a big family, with six sisters. I tried to help my mom and get a job, but I realized nobody was going to hire me. I was 13. They’d pay me under the table, but it wasn’t enough. So I decided one day I was going to just pack up. She was getting ready for work. I told her I was going to visit some friends on the beach, I just packed up a bag and took off. It was five years before I saw her again.”

Rob jumped from couch to couch, crashing at friends’ homes and finding trouble with gangs. “All the guys I grew up with down there are in jail now, except for me. One of them is dead.”

He fought as a Pro-Am (Professional-Amateur) for the next five years, where he amassed a 35-2 record, holding as many as 10 championship titles at one time. In 2001, Razor Rob finally went professional, quickly winning the IMTC Intercontinental welterweight title from William Sriyapai in a unanimous decision.

A look back and forward in the aftermath of MFC 26

Leading up to MFC shows over the past few years, The Z-Files takes an in-depth look at the card, the fighters themselves, and the ramifications of each bout, all leading to the Top 10 Questions.

And in the past year, following each show The Z-Files has expanded its review and added in a rundown of notes, quotes, and fallout. These are not necessarily answers to the Top 10 Questions that were posed coming into the event, but some insight into what happened and what’s in store in the future based upon the results.

So coming out of MFC 26:

It was the most-asked question just hours after the show. Is Douglas Lima that good or did Ryan Ford have an off night? It’s completely unfair and false to take anything away from Lima’s performance by putting the onus back on Ford. Simply put – Lima was that good. He stayed calm under the expected pressure from Ford, never panicked when he was on his back, and so smoothly sunk in the fight-finishing submission. The decisive win begs more questions though including whom does Lima face in his expected title shot, and what is next for Ford. And there are questions arising about Ford’s future. Yes he only has three losses in 15 fights but he’s been submitted twice by armbar and more notably hasn’t peaked when it’s needed the most (two failed shots at the title and now dropping a title eliminator).

And how about this from the Lima locker room … so sure was Lima and his trainer Roan Carneiro that the bout vs. Ford would go five rounds that because it finished early in Round 2, Lima kept his gloves on and did a five-minute round on the pads after the fight. Other than visiting with the doctor, the only acceptable reason for being last guy to the post-fight press conference is that you’re still working.

Antonio McKee may be one of the most radically outspoken fighters around, but for all the doubters who figured he’d fall back on his “boring” style to pull out another decision, they got a very rude awakening when he showcased an all-out aggressive attack in dispatching of Luciano Azevedo inside the opening four minutes of the fight. And what did McKee get out of the fight? I think not only did he achieve finding some new-found respect from MMA insiders, but more importantly, McKee got the love of the crowd at long last. Fans had always respected his record and longevity but they didn’t care for his win-at-no-cost style. By adopting a more exciting approach, McKee was rewarded with the fans’ appreciation.

While McKee went for more entertainment value, Jesse Taylor took a page out of McKee’s old playbook and used a smothering attack – though complemented by several submission attempts – to stall Tom Watson’s climb up the ladder. Taylor was relentless and virtually mistake-free. Watson wasn’t given any room to pull the trigger while the fighters were standing and unable to find any groove on the ground where he struggled against Taylor’s strong swarming.

Though he was unable to finish the fight, it was evident that Ford Robertson’s wrestling is at a serious level. He controlled nearly every minute of his test against seasoned pro Andrew Buckland. There are certainly things to work on if he intends to go further and it would be interesting to see what kind of stand-up game he can put together, but there is much to work with.

You have to like both Curtis Demarce and Tyson Steele. Good kids both who put on a terrific tussle with Demarce coming out on top as he benefitted from his wealth of experience. There are some good fights down the road coming for these two.

Best Superman punch knockout ever? Maybe so. Regardless it was a big splash for David Heath in his 185-pound debut. First he busted open Solomon Hutcherson from the bottom. Then nearly ended the fight with beautiful spinning backfist. Then came the supremely executed smashing blow that turned the lights out on “King” Solomon. Heath came into the fight declaring it the start of his new career and he lived up to the touted rebirth. But give both guys credit – it was the show stealer that everyone predicted it would be.

Speaking of Hutcherson, both he and Luciano Azevedo were walking wounded after their respective bouts. Hutcherson’s face was busted up by the assault from Heath while Azevedo suffered what many were calling the worst cut they’d ever seen in MMA as his forehead was split open by vicious McKee elbows.

Dwayne Lewis uses the uppercut better than 90% of all fighters in MMA. For references, check with Ryan McClain, Jay Whitford, Marvin Eastman, and now, Mike Nickels.

Bulldog Wrestling Releases 2010-2011 Schedule

Charleston, S.C. – The Citadel Wrestling team and Head Coach Rob Hjerling announced their 2010-2011 schedule on Thursday. Highlighting the home schedule is the annual Citadel Open to begin the season and the 17th annual All-Academy Championships at McAlister Field House in February. The Bulldogs will also host dual matches against Davidson, Campbell, UNC Greensboro and Gardner-Webb.

“Hosting the defending SoCon Tournament Champions UNC Greensboro is important for us,” said Hjerling. “Obviously that dual will be one that we focus on.”“The All-Academy Championships is an outstanding tournament at an important moment of theseason. It is the last tournament that we wrestle in before the Southern Conference Championships. We are very excited to be hosting the All-Academy Championships this year.”

The Citadel will face off in 20 duals in the upcoming season, the most since the 2000-2001 season when they also took part in 20 duals. After opening the season at home with The Citadel Open, the Bulldogs will head to the Hershey Duals to face perennial ACC powers Virginia and Virginia Tech, along with Drexel and Georgia Mason out of the CAA. UVA finished 15th last season and won the ACC Championships.

“This is a strong set of duals to open the season against two tough ACC teams and two tough CAA teams.”The following week the Bulldogs will face Indiana, who finished 24th at the NCAA Championships and Columbia in the Disney Duals. The grapplers will then trek to the Penn State Open in State College, Penn. in early December. “Indiana and Columbia are two teams that I do not believe that we have ever wrestled before. Again, we are competing against two tough conferences in the Big Ten and the EIWA. The Penn State Open is another tough tournament with the opportunity to see wrestlers that will prepare us for the Southern Conference Championships and the NCAA Championships.”

After the conference-opening dual in Charleston against Davidson in mid-December, the Cadets will take part in the annual Southern Scuffle in Greensboro, N.C. to wrap up the 2010 year. Last season, the event featured six teams that finished the season ranked in the Top 25.

“There will be several Top 15 and Top 25 teams at the Southern Scuffle. Our guys will have multiple opportunities to compete against nationally ranked wrestlers. We should have a lot of experience under our belt before we head into January.”

To open 2011, the grapplers will hit the road for a pair of duals with Appalachian State and Duke before heading to the Lone Star Duals in Arlington, Texas to face Pac-10 foe Stanford along with Northern Colorado and Utah Valley out of the Western Wrestling Conference and conclude with national power Nebraska out of the Big XII, who finished 13th at the NCAA Championships a year ago. “This is an opportunity to wrestle against four teams that we do not normally see. All four are returning some high quality wrestlers. The opportunity to wrestle Nebraska in a dual will be a great experience.”

The Bulldogs will return to Charleston for a pair of duals with Campbell and UNCG before ending January with a couple of road SoCon duals at VMI and defending regular-season champions Chattanooga. The Citadel will then host the 17th annual All-Academy Championships in early February, marking the first time the event has come to Charleston since 2005.

Ending the regular season schedule for the Bulldogs is a pair of road duals at ACC opponents, NC State and North Carolina, and completing the season by hosting Gardner-Webb at McAlister Field House. In total, the Bulldogs will face opponents from seven different major Division I conferences in the ACC, Big Ten, Big XII, CAA, EIWA, Pac-10 and WWC in addition to their normal SoCon slate.

“I am very pleased with how this schedule turned out. We are giving our wrestlers every opportunity to put themselves in position to qualify for a spot in the SoCon Tournament and for the NCAA Championships.“

The 2011 SoCon Championships will take part in Boone, N.C. on March 5 and the NCAA Championships will be in Philadelphia from March 17-20, 2011.
