UNION CITY, NJ – 09/21/2010 – Dignity Promotions, in association with Peru Box Promotions and ATV PERU, proudly announced the inception of their highly anticipated “LOS CAMPEONES del MANANA” series, with their first event now set for Saturday, October 16th in Union City, New Jersey.

The main event, which will be televised live in Peru, is a 10 round lightweight matchup between the flashy and widely popular Jonathan Maicelo (13-0, 8 KO’s) and heavy handed Colombian Oscar Cuero (13-2, 10 KO’s).

Both promising fighters will be making their U.S. boxing debuts and are looking to impress, as well as broaden their fan base, outside their native homelands.

The two televised co-feature bouts will highlight the talents of decorated amateur champions Carlos Zambrano, now 11-0 (5 KO’s) since leaving his Chincha, Peru home to punch for pay, and power punching jr. welterweight Juan Zegarra (5-0, 5 KO’s) of Lima, Peru.

Both undefeated “Campeones del Manana” Zambrano and Zegarra now reside in nearby North Bergen, NJ.

Several local fighters are also slated to see action:

Paterson Cruiserweight Elvin Sanchez (3-1, 3 KO’s), will be looking to rebound from a knockout loss in his last fight.

Newark Lt. Heavyweight Angel Concepcion (2-0) fights to keep his record unblemished, crowd pleasing super bantamweight Raul Lopez (4-1, 3 KO’s) fighting out of the Bronx will give scrappy Giraldo Rosas (0-1) a chance at revenge. Lopez earned a hard-fought unanimous decision win over the debuting Union City fighter this past July in Vineland, NJ.

Union City’s own Juan “The Beast” Rodriguez (3-0, 3KO’s) will get the chance to shine in front of his hometown fans as the highly touted granite-handed welterweight fights in his own backyard for the first time.

All four under card bouts will be four-rounders.

Nicklow and Kennedy Battle to a Draw; Wheeler Destroys Crawford in Baltimore!

Baltimore, MD (September 19) – With an enthusiastic crowd backing two of the Beltway Area’s gutsiest pugilists, longtime rivals Jesse Nicklow and Julius Kennedy fought to a thrilling ten round majority draw in the main event of “Baltimore Bad Boys” last Friday evening at the Du Burns Arena.

In what many ringsiders declared as Maryland’s Fight of the Year, both men landed a number of crisp blows in various toe to toe exchanges. Each fighter maintained a solid punch output in close quarters, with Nicklow relying on jabs, uppercuts and right hands, as Kennedy worked off of a steady body attack and straight rights. Both men had their moments, but Nicklow appeared to be the more consistent fighter throughout the contest.

Although multiple media outlets declared Nicklow a close victor, the scorecard of 98-92 in his favor was overruled by two tallies of 95-95.

Nicklow, of Baltimore, is now 20-2-3 (9 KO’s). Kennedy, a Windsor Mills, MD native, left the ring at 7-1-1 (3 KO’s).

“I thought Jesse won the fight,” said Promoter Jake Smith of Baltimore Pro Boxing. “He established himself and landed a lot of good combinations, but it was back and fourth the whole fight. I can’t complain though because it was a heck of a fight and the crowd seemed contempt with the draw.”

One of boxing’s legendary warriors was also thrilled with the action that transpired inside the squared circle.

“I am glad it ended in a draw both guys fought their heart out,” stated Five Time World Champion Vinny Paz. “It was a great fight and the fans definitely got their money’s worth. I hope they fight again!”

Unbeaten cruiserweight Steve “Show Stealer” Wheeler of Baltimore remained perfect with a crushing first round knockout over Virginia’s Donald Crawford. The wildly popular Wheeler put Crawford down for the count with a vicious straight left at 2:27.

Wheeler is now 6-0 with 5 KO’s. Crawford, an unbeaten mixed martial artist who came in on short notice, falls to 0-1.

Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and legendary trainer Kevin Rooney also took in the night’s action from ringside.

VERONA, NY (September 20, 2010)—On Saturday night October 2nd, undefeated Brazilian Middleweight Isaac Rodriguez will take on Colombian power puncher Samuel Miller in a bout scheduled for twelve rounds for the WBC/USNBC Middleweight championship at The Turning Stone Resort & Casino in Verona, New York.

Rodrigues of Belem, Brazil and now makes his home in West Berlin, New Jersey has a perfect record of 17-0 with fourteen knockouts will look to capture a second Middleweight championship.

The twenty-five year old won his first eight bouts via knockout in his native country. Rodrigues made his American debut on April 28, 2007 with a four round majority decision Hollister Elliott at the Foxwoods Resort in Connecticut. Rodrigues won two more bouts in the United States before heading back to Brazil.

On April 3rd, 2008, Rodrigues won the WBO Latino Middleweight title with an eighth round stoppage over Pablo Daniel Zamora Nievas (19-3-1). He defended that crown once with a tenth round stoppage over Americo Rodolfo Sagania (16-2-1) before heading back to the states.

Since the two title fights in Brazil, Rodrigues has won four straight on American soil which includes a second round stoppage over tough Jose “Macho” Medina, capable Bard Austin, upset specialist Marcos Primera and in his last bout, Rodrigues scored a ten round majority decision over Contender Brian Vera (16-3) in a bout that took place on February 26th at The Turning Stone Resort & Casino.

Miller of Arboletes, Colombia and now residing in La Habra, California is known as a knockout artist as his record reads 20-4 with seventeen knockouts.

Miller made his first twelve appearances in Colombia and won twelve straight with all but one coming inside the distance.

Miller than campaigned in the United States and won four fights in an eight month stretch that were highlighted by wins over Jason Naugler (15-5-1) and Steve Walker (19-13).

After a second round knockout win in Colombia, Miller suffered his first two pro defeats to Darrell Woods and a then undefeated Vera (12-0).
Miller dropped a fight to highly regarded David Lopez that was for the WBO Latino Middleweight title and in his last fight, Miller lost in an attempt at the same title to former world title challenger Marco Antonio Rubio (46-5-1).

In the exciting co-feature, local favorite Brian Miller will take on Ikem Orji in an eight round Jr. Welterweight bout.

Miller of Schenectady, New York is undefeated with a record 8-0-4 with three knockouts and is known as a hard working customer who will fight anybody at anytime.

Miller has signature wins over Broderick Antoine and a split decision win over Danny McDermott (8-1-1). He is coming off a draw with tough Italian Floriano Pagliara (10-4) on September 11.

Orji of Laurel, Maryland via Nigeria has a record of 6-3 with two knockouts.

Like Miller, Orji is willing to fight anyone with close losses to prospects Anthony Flores (6-0); Isaac Suarez (6-0).

Orji scored a mild upset when he scored a fourth round stoppage over Andrew Farmer (13-1) this past March 6th.

Orji dropped his last bout as he lost a unanimous decision to Rod Salka (11-0).

The rest of the card features some very good local prospects.

In a six round Welterweight bout, Kenny Abril (9-3-1, 5 KO’s) of Rochester, NY takes on Francisco Ginorio (7-6-2, 2 KO’s) of Palm Bay, Florida.

Maximum Fighting President State of the Union Address

It’s amazing in this day and age how many people want to be in the MMA business and how many non-educated people are promoting the sport of MMA.

Cities all over the country are forming commissions with members that don’t know the difference between an armbar and a rear-naked choke. These commissions can’t fathom why it’s wrong for a guy with a record of 33-11 fighting a guy who is 0-1, and don’t understand the mistakes they’re making when they let a veteran with a record of 94-16 fight someone who is 1-3. It’s unmistakeable the dangers this can cause. Who is going to responsible when the unprepared fighter is seriously hurt or worse? It’s an embarrassment but even more than that it is criminally irresponsible.

Most of these ignorant promoters don’t care. To them, it’s about looking good, wearing the coolest T-shirt and being able to brag at the after-party about how they “own” an MMA show. I used to think that it is the fault of these idiots but after really thinking about it, it is the commissions fault.

See my big problem is that this is the only thing I am good at. I really love it – I mean really love it. We at the MFC don’t do this as a hobby or a side business or for a way to play some sort of role.

This is my business. This is how my family survives. It is our life and our livelihood.

I’ve spent the last 11 years trying to bring my organization up to the highest level and run it with very high standards. I truly believe in the near future that we will see a very serious injury or death if this continues. You would think that these promoters would not chance it and screw up but I realized any person who would put an 0-1 fighter against a 33-11 fighter can’t love the sport of MMA because the ramifications that will come if that unqualified fighter got seriously injured would resonate throughout the country (if not the entire world). And with the recent B.C. Medical Association on their ridiculous crusade trying to get MMA stopped and Ontario on its way to getting sanctioned all we need is any slight mishap and you will see the sport of MMA go down the toilet in Canada – and for that matter anywhere else where sanctioning is a hot topic such as New York.

And it’s not just about unscrupulous promoters who don’t know the first thing about proper matchmaking or care about things like medicals and insurance.

It’s also about these promoters who get away with putting on shows by throwing the word “amateur” on a poster and calling themselves “sanctioned” by some group of guys in a basement somewhere. These shows, specifically in Saskatchewan, are 100% illegal. Who is going to take responsibility if and when a young man is seriously injured, crippled, or killed? There is no sanctioning body, no civic or provincial commission who commands proper insurance and medical precautions.

But do your “amateur” show in a dark pavilion or in some sketchy nightclub and you can get away with it. It won’t be long before you wreck someone’s life and the sport itself. You don’t love the fighters and you don’t love the sport. You love a quick buck and being able to walk around like you’re some kind of celebrity. You are a ticking time bomb.

I worry every day about things like this and if commissions are not going to regulate or make sure that these promoters are not allowed to do these types of matchups, I will write, petition, and hassle these commissions to start being a proper regulatory body. I want people to know who is doing right and who is doing wrong. The question isn’t whether you like me or not. We are bonded by our love and passion for MMA and even before the Maximum Fighting Championship what always comes first is the preservation of the sport of mixed martial arts.

The Diligent Fighter

Every fighter has a natural inclination to follow the path of least resistance. Fortunately, despite our natural inclination, we can choose to follow a path of greater resistance and become the diligent fighter we were created to be in Christ. And if you develop the kind of diligence that our heavenly trainer refers to, you can achieve more victories inside the cage of life.

Diligence is a learnable fighting skill that combines: creative persistence, a smart-working effort rightly planned and rightly performed in a timely, efficient, and effective manner.

It is human nature to follow the path of least resistance during training camp. Our heavenly trainer understands that we need to be motivated to choose diligence over our natural inclination to “go with the flow.” And what is that motivation? Being truly diligent, he tells us, brings us priceless rewards, while a lack of diligence can produce devastating consequences. Here are some of the rewards:

You will gain advantage in the fight.

In any fight, would you rather pursue it having a strong and unshakable advantage, or having a disadvantage? Our heavenly trainer assures us that those who are truly diligent will gain an insurmountable advantage over those who are not. He says, “The plans of the diligent lead surely to advantage” (Proverbs 21:5).

You will be in control of the fight, rather than have the fight control you.

Would you prefer to have the fight controlled by your opponent, or would you rather control the fight? Your heavenly trainer says, “The hand of the diligent will rule, but the slack hand will be put to forced labor” Proverbs 12:24. Fighters who are truly diligent not only control their own destiny, but enhance the achievements of those around them as well.

You will experience contentment.

Our heavenly trainer gives us this promise if we remain diligent throughout the good fight, “The soul of the diligent is mad fat” Proverbs 13:4. When using the world “soul” we are referring to a fighter’s innermost being, their very core, the seat of their personality and emotions. Imagine being so contented and fulfilled that you crave nothing. That’s the kind of fulfillment that is promised to the diligent fighter.

Fighting with diligence is demanding. It requires vision, creativity and commitment. We must always remember, “In all labor there is profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty” Proverbs 14:23.

Remember, it is called a fight for a reason. However, we fight from victory, not for victory. Keep Fighting!

Former Gopher Manny Rivera is New Virginia Assist Coach, talks to TDR TV

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia head wrestling coach Steve Garland has announced the hiring of Manny Rivera as an assistant coach with the program. Garland also announced that former Cavalier Brent Jones will serve as the team’s volunteer coach this season.
Rivera is a former All-America wrestler at Minnesota and still is an active wrestler at the international level.

“We couldn’t be happier that Manny will be joining the UVa wrestling family,” Garland said. “He possesses all the qualities of a great mentor and coach for our student-athletes. We feel like we have brought in a very special person and we are excited to see what the future holds.”

Rivera comes to Virginia after working as an administrative assistant wrestling coach last season at Minnesota, where he assisted in training, motivating and directing student-athletes. He also assisted in structured practices, weight training and conditioning.

“I am very excited to join the University of Virginia community,” Rivera said. “I am looking forward to working with the Cavalier wrestling program.”

Rivera also served for two years as an assistant director at the School of Champions in Minneapolis and was a volunteer wrestling coach at Rosemead High School.

Rivera had a standout wrestling career at Minnesota. He was a four-year starter for the Golden Gophers and a three-time NCAA qualifier, earning All-America honors in 2008 when he took seventh place at 141 pounds. He also was a member of Minnesota’s 2007 NCAA Championship team.

Rivera finished his Minnesota career with a 113-40 record and 27 falls. As a senior, he was a team captain. As a junior, he carried a 35-match winning streak at one point during the season – the sixth-longest winning streak in school history.

Rivera has been successful at the international level as well. He was a bronze medalist at the 2010 Pan-American Games as a member of the Mexican National Team.

A native of El Monte, Calif., Rivera earned a psychology degree from Minnesota in 2008.

Rivera replaces Scott Moore, who moved closer to home and accepted a coaching position at Lock Haven.

Jones wrestled at Virginia from 2005-10 and finished his UVa career as the school’s all-time leader in pins (45) and ranks fourth in career victories (106).

“Brent has been around our program for a long time,” Garland said. “We are very happy that he has decided to stay in Charlottesville and help our student-athletes. We feel his wealth of competitive experience at the NCAA and especially the international levels will help our program immensely.”

Jones earned the 2010 Gorrarian Trophy at the NCAA Championships. The award is presented to the wrestler who pinned the most opponents in the least amount of time at the championships. Jones recorded a pair of pins in the competition and needed just one minute, 33 seconds to do so.

He also was the ACC champion at 197 pounds in 2009 and was named the ACC Championships’ Most Outstanding Wrestler that year. Jones was a two-time NCAA qualifier who also won the 2008 University National Freestyle Championship at 211 pounds and the 2006 FILA Junior Freestyle National Championship at 211 pounds.
