The official weigh in, for Saturday’s Steve Goodwin promoted ‘It’s Personal’ double title event at York Hall – featuring former English Super Featherweight Champion Ryan Barrett against , took place at the Ultrachem TKO Gym in Canning Town, London today.

Following the weigh in some of the protagonists took the time to make their final comments, surprisingly neither Barrett or Alexander continued the fiery war of words.

Ryan Barrett simply said “All the talking’s been done, I’m happy, weight’s bang on 9.9.”

Following his weight check Mark ‘The Flash’ Alexander also kept it short saying “Just under (weight limit) like I knew i’d be. I done the weight and I’m ready to go and get this title tomorrow. I’m gonna carb up now and then I’m ready to go.”

Whilst opponent Lee Noble sweated off the pound and half excess ‘Phat’ Pat McAleese also made a simple statement “I came in more or less spot on the weight. I can’t wait, I’m ready to Rock and Roll now. I’m ready”

Final word on the highly exciting event goes to promoter Steve Goodwin who said, “This is the first dual title fight we have had. We had a title fight in April, but this is the first time we have had two title fights on the same night and we’re really looking forward to it.

It’s going well, we’ve only had one fight drop out, so we’ve got ten decent fights. Two ten rounders, a six rounder and some up and coming prospects. To be honest it’s the best bill we’ve had so far.

It looks like a big success. We’ve sold out of standard tickets. We’ve got some ringside left, apart from that we’re sold out.

It’s going to be a really good night and a great atmosphere for everybody.”

Jim Brown Takes Action, Tickets for Kids can Benefit National Duals

Long time blog readers know that it is named after where I have watched much of the wrestling I’ve seen over the past 20+ years – Section GG, Row 12, Seats 1 & 2 in Carver Hawkeye Arena. When I started the blog it was meant to reflect the opinions of a fan sitting on the sidelines. Other than middle school intramurals, I never wrestled. Neither my brothers nor my daughters, nor any other member of my family wrestled. I have no official ties to wrestling in any way. I AM JUST A FAN.

The past few years it’s been hard sitting on the sidelines and watching what is happening to this great sport we all love, so a couple of years ago I started to act. My thoughts at the time were, “It might be meaningless, but let’s see if one fan can have any impact at all.” I started small and bought a few tickets to the NWCA All Star Classic when it was in Oregon. I sent them off to Rick Stewart and asked him to find some kids out there to give them to.

Later that season I stretched a little and bought 20 – 30 tickets for every Hawkeye home dual meet and gave them away to kid’s wrestling clubs or middle school teams. My logic was fairly simple – kids need idols. If I could get youngsters just starting in the sport to see the best college wrestlers in America, perhaps they would see something that would cause them to hang with it.

Last year I launched Tickets for Kids. My goal was to raise enough money to send 1,000 kids to a morning session of the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships in Cedar Rapids. I didn’t make my goal, but, thanks to many of you, over 600 kids got to see some very exciting college wrestling. I’ve heard from coaches and kids since then and I think we, in some small part, accomplished what we’d hoped for.

I own and operate a small business and after last spring I wondered if I should continue with Tickets for Kids. I sent out surveys to some of the larger donors and asked them if they would continue to support the effort. Most said they would. But still, I couldn’t decide. It’s more work than I had imagined.

Then last Thursday, Eric Betterman, the co-founder of theopenmat.com, threw out a challenge – “Let’s make it a goal to sell out every single (Division I) dual meet in the nation.” He pointed out that we didn’t actually need to attend if that was physically impossible – just buy them. I drew upon my experience and followed that with a challenge of my own, “Which fans of which school could raise enough money to buy enough tickets to send at least 20 kids to a dual meet at their favorite school first?” Then I called upon Hawkeye fans to bail my butt out after shooting off my mouth. They did. In three days I received enough pledges to send over 160 kids to Hawkeye dual meets. One Nebraska fan committed to sending 20 youngsters to a Cornhusker meet – and no one else responded. Apparently, they all prefer to sit on the sidelines as the “world’s oldest and greatest sport” is assaulted from multiple directions.

That flurry of activity answered the question – Tickets for Kids must continue.

Every survey respondent asked that we expand the scope – that we offer a greater variety of wrestling events for kids to attend. We’re doing that. Donations will be used to provide tickets for the NWCA National Duals, the Division III Championships in La Crosse, the NAIA Championships in Cedar Rapids and any college dual meet you select. I’m going to run two campaigns, the “Preseason Fan Challenge” and the “Championship Run”. The Preseason Fan Challenge starts today and runs to November 30. The basic premise is simple: which school’s fans will best support wrestling by sending kids to wrestling events. We’ll have five divisions and crown both divisional and an overall champion.

In the interest of fairness, the Hawkeye and Cornhusker fans will start even with everyone else.

If you like the concept and want to join in the challenge – but don’t want to do it through Tickets for Kids – you can. Buy enough tickets to send at least 20 kids to an event, send me a copy of the ticket purchase receipt and the name of the club leader or coach whose kids got the tickets and I’ll credit your school with the donation.

Reminder: NCAA rules will not allow you to give tickets to high school wrestlers so focus on the elementary and middle schoolers.
If you really want your school to win, you’re going to have to get off of the sidelines. Email your friends and alumni and the people that sit next to you at wrestling meets. Post a link to this blog on your favorite team’s sites. Rally your fans on facebook. Let’s send 10,000 kids from all over the country to college wrestling events.

Here’s the real challenge. I’m almost certain that Hawkeye fans will win this in a cake walk. Which one of you is going to get mad enough to prove me wrong?

Or – you can remain on the sidelines and do nothing.

CURTIS “SHOWTIME” STEVENS HEADLINES HAVOC BOXING ON SATURDAY NOVEMBER 20TH IN BROOKLYN

Brooklyn favorites Curtis Stevens, Will Rosinsky, Sadam Ali and Joselito Collado will be featured on November 20th at The Aviator Sports Complex in Brooklyn

BROOKLYN, NY (September 10, 201O)—Fresh off one of the best boxing shows of 2010, Havoc Boxing Promotions will return to the Aviator Sports Complex in Brooklyn that will feature world ranked Super Middleweight, Curtis “Showtime” Stevens in the ten round main event.

Bouts featuring Undefeated Light Heavyweight Will Rosinsky, undefeated Welterweight and former U.S. Olympian Sadam Ali as well as undefeated Featherweight Joselito Collado will serve as the co-features on the loaded card.

Stevens, of the boxing hotbed of the Brownsville section of Brooklyn is one of the most feared punchers in the Super Middleweight division and has a record of 21-3 with fifteen knockouts.

Stevens started out his career as one of the most ballyhooed prospects in boxing as he racked up thirteen straight victories with eleven knockouts. After suffering a controversial stoppage defeat to veteran Marcos Primera, Stevens scored a eight round unanimous decision in the rematch that took place four months later.

After winning four consecutive bouts, Stevens dropped a ten round unanimous decision to former U.S. Olympian Andre Dirrell in a bout that was shown on HBO.

Stevens went on to win four consecutive bouts which included a three round pounding over then undefeated Piotr Wilczewski (22-0) in front of predominantly Polish crowd in Newark, New Jersey.

In Stevens last bout, he came out strong before dropping a twelve round unanimous decision to former member of the Contender Jesse Brinkley (34-5) in an IBF title elimination bout on January 29 in Brinkley’s hometown of Reno, Nevada.

Uundefeated Light Heavyweight Will Rosinsky will see action an eight round bout against Miguel Hernandez.

Rosinsky has a record of 12-0 with seven knockouts and has quickly become one of the most popular fighters in the New York area.

The native of Brooklyn has developed a string fan base as he has fought eleven of his twelve pro bouts in New York and has been steadily stepping up the competition.

In his last bout, Rosinsky made his second appearance at the famed Madison Square Garden and stopped Angel David Gonzalez in three rounds as part of the Ivan Calderon – Jesus Iribe undercard that took place on June 12th.

Ali of Brooklyn, New York is fast becoming one of the best prospects in the United States as the twenty-one year old has improved in each bout and is growing into his power.

After winning his first seven bouts and only three by knockout, Ali has stepped the competition and has shown tremendous punching prowess in disposing tough Philadelphia fighter Julias Edmonds on July 16th in Newark, New Jersey.

In his last bout, Ali had his most impressive outing to date has he stopped iron chinned Lennin Arroyo in five rounds on August 21st as part of the Tomasz Adamek – Michael Grant Pay Per View Undercard

Collado of Queens, New York has quietly racked up eleven straight wins with three knockouts to begin his pro career.

The Featherweight has some nice wins on his ledger which includes his first round destruction of Philadelphia prospect Jules Blackwell (8-2-2) and his last outing when he outboxed upset specialist Andreas Ledesma on August 7th at The Aviator Sports Complex.

The brand new podcast is a new feature for Prizefighter as Barry Hearn’s hugely successful eight-man, one night tournaments enters its third series with the Heavyweights IV on Saturday 9 October – the 14th edition of the event.

Bunce was present at the draw for Prizefighter Heavyweights IV which was conducted by five-time World Heavyweight Champion Evander Holyfield, who spoke to Steve at length about his career. Old rivals Matt Skelton and Michael Sprott could meet in the semi-finals of Prizefighter Heavyweights IV, potentially giving Sprott the chance to avenge two defeats against the former English, British European and Commonwealth champion Skelton – with Sprott returning to the ring for the first time since his last gasp knockout defeat to Audley Harrison in their European title bout in April.

Sprott faces Danny Hughes in the third quarter-final of the night, the Sunderland fighter who fought in the last Heavyweights outing, knocking out Neil Perkins in the quarter-finals before losing to Harrison in the semis. Skelton must get past Ali Adams in order to reach the semi-final with the London-based Adams unbeaten in his last nine fights with eight wins.

In the opening bout of the night, Irishman Kevin McBride – famous for being the last man to beat Mike Tyson – take on Manchester’s Michael Holden, the former British champion who has scores to settle with both Sprott and Skelton after losing to the pair earlier in his career.
