Perfect on the scales for Retribution: All nine fights greenlit for MFC 26

All 18 fighters including lightweight title-holder Antonio “Mandingo” McKee and his challenger Luciano Azevedo were perfect as the official weigh-in for MFC 26: Retribution was held Thursday at City Centre Mall in Edmonton, Alberta.

McKee (23-3-2), who is unbeaten in seven years, hit the scale at 154.4 while Azevedo (16-8), the only fighter to hold a victory over pound-for-pound top-10er Jose Aldo, stepped off at 154.2

In the night’s other co-main event for the show to be held at the River Cree Resort and Casino, ATT Atlanta product Douglas “The Phenom” Lima (14-4) weighed in at 170.8 while home-town hero Ryan “The Real Deal” Ford (12-2) flexed his muscles after hitting 169.4.

ROBERT AND CASEY GUERRERO “JOIN THE DROP OF LIFE”

September 9, 2010 – This past Tuesday, two-division world champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero and his wife Casey joined the “City of Hope” as they hosted a red carpet event at Club Nokia in Los Angeles.

The event showcased the premiere of ‘Unete con la Gota de la Vida’ (Join The Drop of Life), a song put together by the who’s who of music talent from the U.S., Latin America and Spain.

“This historic premiere marks a nationwide effort to reach out to the Latino community and encourage their participation in the national bone marrow registry to help save lives,” said Salvador Trevino, CEO of Santa Fe Communications. “City of Hope is grateful for the support from Universal Music and BMI Publishing, event sponsors and the talented Latino music artists for their commitment to the fight against cancer.”

“We’re excited for the opportunity to help build awareness and support for Latino patients in need of bone marrow matches,” said Scott Loyola, associate vice president, City of Hope. “Our hope is to be able to save more lives by quickly finding a match so that patients at City of Hope can receive life-saving transplants.”

Casey Guerrero, whose life was saved from a bone marrow transplantation, stated, “I’m very thankful that I was invited to this event. I’m living proof that bone marrow transplants work and save lives. If my story can help bring more awareness to the Latino community about joining the registry, then I’m going to do all I can to help.”

“Together we can all help save lives by joining the bone marrow registry,” said Robert Guerrero. “A cotton swab in the mouth is all that is needed to get started. I just want to let everyone know that today’s technology has made this procedure very simple.”

Shark Fight Promotions Partners with the American Forces Network to Bring “Shark Fights 13: Jardine vs. Prangley” to Troops Abroad

Amarillo, Texas, September 9, 2010 – Shark Fight Promotions announced today that they have partnered with the American Forces Network to deliver “Shark Fights 13: Jardine vs. Prangley” to the men and women of the U.S. armed forces serving overseas. A rebroadcast of the event will air on AFN’s worldwide television network Sunday, September 12. In honor of the lives that were lost on 9/11 and in appreciation of our nation’s military personnel, Shark Fights and award winning production company Crown Chimp Productions, created a special tribute video that will air as part of the pay-per-view and AFN broadcast.

Rulon Gardner to enter Alan & Gloria Rice Greco-Roman Hall of Champions

WATERLOO – The National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum is proud to announce that Rulon Gardner, the most decorated American Greco-Roman wrestler, will be inducted into the Alan & Gloria Rice Greco-Roman Hall of Champions on Saturday, October 9, 2010. The event will take place at the Christensen Center Commons on the campus of Augsburg College in Minneapolis, Minn.

The Jim and Olive Morgan family will be given the first Greco-Roman Legacy Award for their tremendous accomplishments in wrestling, specifically in the Greco-Roman discipline. A family of 12 kids, six boys and six girls, Jim passed along his boxing and wrestling skills to his boys.

John, Gordy and Marty – sons of Jim and Olive – won a combined 10 national Greco-Roman titles and competed in two Olympics and two World championships.

Alan and Gloria Rice, namesakes of the hall of champions, have been instrumental to the success of Greco-Roman wrestling in the United States. Alan Rice was a Big Ten champion and All-American for the University of Minnesota. In 1956 he won national titles in Greco-Roman and freestyle. He also placed 7th at the 1956 Olympics and coached the 1972 Greco-Roman Olympic team.

He and his wife, Gloria, helped form the Minnesota Wrestling Club. The club enjoys the unique distinction of placing a wrestler on every World and Olympic team since 1964, a record unequaled in wrestling history. The Alan & Gloria Rice Greco-Roman Hall of Champions occupies a significant wing in the Dan Gable Museum in Waterloo.

“Inducting Rulon into the Greco-Roman Hall of Champions is a great recognition for a great champion and his five peers. Many people thought that no American could ever triumph in this style of wrestling. Now the world recognizes the capacities of our great country to produce great champions,” Rice stated.

Gardner shocked the world in the finals of the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia, when he defeated legendary Russian Alexander Karelin in the finals of the super-heavyweight division. Karelin had won 12 World and Olympic titles up to that point. Gardner won the World Championships in 2001 and also captured the bronze medal at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece.

Gardner joins last year’s inaugural class in this elite Hall. The 2009 class included Olympic champions Steve Fraser and Jeff Blatnick and World champions Mike Houck, Dennis Hall and Joe Warren.

Gardner was inducted as a Distinguished Member into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in Stillwater, Okla., on June 5, 2010.

Festivities begin at 5:00 p.m. with a reception. Dinner, awards presentation and autograph session will follow.

Orlando’s Winter Springs HS Scott Gomrad Turned Life Around, others too

34 year old Scott Gomrad was a Florida wrestler at Oviedo high school who helped start the local NWCA team. Gomrad has become one of the best wrestling coaches in the state and has built a very strong team at Winter Springs High School in Orlando.

Last season Scott had a wrestler on his squad pass away as well as a friend that coached the football team. This really messed him up. He spent a lot of time upset and withdrawn until he had some realizations and decided to turn some of the negatives in his life into positives.

Scott has decided to use these important events in his life as motivational fuel and he has begun to train with Jungle MMA’s Tom Lawlor and Seth Petrizelli for a fight this coming November.

He has lost 30 pounds and has helped Tom, Seth and the other Jungle MMA guys with their wrestling as they prepare for their fights.

Scott has no pro aspirations but just wants to use wrestling and the fight game as a motivation to improve himself and turn something that had been a negative in his life into a positive.

Gomrad is a great coach and a good person who has really worked hard to turn negatives in his life into a positives through the sport of wrestling.

ANTONIO MCKEE IN A “PUT UP OR SHUT UP” BOUT THIS FRIDAY ON HDNET

MFC Lightweight Champion Has Promised to Retire If He Can’t Finish His Opponent – Friday, 10:00 p.m. ET

DALLAS (September 9, 2010) With a professional record of 24-3-2 and a 14 fight undefeated streak that stretches back to 2003, Antonio “Mandingo” McKee should be known as one of the best lightweights in the world. Unfortunately, instead of dominating, the word that comes to mind most often to describe McKee is “boring'” due to the fact that 18 of his wins have come by decision.

After finishing one opponent in the last nine years and coming off an uninspired decision victory against Carlo Prater in October, McKee has promised to retire if his bout with Luciano Azevedo for the MFC Lightweight title at MFC 26: Retribution on Friday doesn’t deliver.

HDNet will air the event LIVE beginning at 10:00 p.m. ET.

“When this fight is over, if it’s not what the fans want to see, I’m done,” said McKee. “I’ve taken everything the critics have thrown at me for the last five years. Now I’m going to shut them all up.”

His opponent Azevedo (16-8) is no push over – he handed WEC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo his only defeat.

Michael “The Voice” Schiavello, who will call Friday night’s action live on HDNet thinks McKee may have talked himself into a tough predicament.

“He’s putting a lot of pressure on himself to change a successful style. That could open holes which someone like Azevedo can expose,” said Schiavello. “To his credit, he did win his last fight in March by first round submission, albeit on a small promotion, but once Azevedo starts to apply pressure and land some strikes, I wonder if Antonio won’t resort to what he knows best and that’s getting the top position and doing the old lay ‘n’ pray.”

“Antonio must be losing it,” said HDNet Fights CEO Andrew Simon. “First he calls out Bas Rutten and Guy Mezger. Then he says he will retire if he can’t finish the only man to defeat Jose Aldo? Antonio has been promising HDNet exciting fights for years – truthfully I think it’s up to his opponent to make him change his style – but I am excited to see the outcome of this unique stipulation Antonio has put on himself.”

The night’s co-main event promises to deliver a finish when Canada’s Ryan Ford, who boasts 11 finishes in 12 career wins, takes on Douglas Lima, who brings in a 57% submission ratio.

“There’s no way this one goes the distance,” says Schiavello. “Ford is on an absolute tear, having finished his last four opponents collectively in just over seven minutes! For those watching live on HDNet trust me when I say this is not the fight you want to be taking a bathroom break!”

Also on the card for HDNet’s LIVE broadcast are Mike Nickels vs. Dwayne Lewis (11-5), Tom Watson (12-3) vs. Jesse Taylor (15-6), David Heath (15-6) vs. Solomon Hutcherson (11-6), and Richie Hightower (8-4) vs. Curtis Demarce (8-7).

LAS VEGAS / SYDNEY (September 9, 2010)—It was announced Monday afternoon that undefeated and world ranked cruiserweight, BJ Flores will take on Perth’s favorite son Danny “Geen Machine” Green on Wednesday November 17th in Greens’s hometown for the IBO Cruiserweight title.

Flores accepted the challenge and is more than ready to travel down under to face Green for that championship.

Green and Flores kicked off a press tour today that started in Sydney and will continue to Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane over the next five day for the bout that will undoubtedly be the biggest fight of Flores’ career.
