That’s the key question. He fought most of his career at 140-147 and this fight is at 175. Spina was getting close to a world title shot but fighting to a draw last October hurt him. He could use a win against a name opponent like Ray to push him higher up in the world ratings.”

Oliveira, 42, has always been an action-fighter and is also a 3-time world title challenger. The slick boxer and defensive genius from New Bedford (MA) is a former IBU welterweight, NABF light welterweight and New England lightweight champion. “Sucra” has defeated Vince Phillips, Saul Duran, Vivian Harris, Charles Murray (twice), and Tracy Spann, among the more notables, and also fought world champions Ricky Hatton, Vernon Forrest, Jake Rodriguez and Zack Padilla.

Spina returns to the scene of his greatest triumph, which occurred back in 2006 at Foxwoods when “KO Kid” stopped Jesse Brinkley with a vicious body shot in the 11th round of a fight Spina trailed. Brinkley challenges IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute for the world title October 15. Spina, who is coming off of a 10-round draw last October against former world champion Lou Del Valle, also holds wins against former world champion Carl Daniels, Jay Pina and Anwar Oshana

In an intriguing match-up of promising prospects, David Bauza (5-0, 3 KOs), of Hartford, and Reynaldo Rodriguez (5-1, 2 KOs), fighting out of Woonsocket (RI), battle for the vacant EBA New England Super Middleweight Championship in the 6-round co-feature.

“Ray and Joey aren’t the only fighters on this stacked card who find themselves at the crossroads, “Burchfield noted. “Billy Moffard hasn’t been in the ring for a long time. Teammates Steele, Robertson ready for MFC debuts at Retribution

Though they come from the same camp in the same town, they are two vastly different personalities.

Yet these two fighters have a common goal – a successful and lasting first impression in their MFC debuts.

Tyson Steele and Ford Robertson are both slated to step into the Maximum Fighting Championship ring for the first time at MFC 26: Retribution, and while both have clear intentions on coming out on top in their respective matchups, they certainly have different outward approaches.

The undefeated Steele (6-0), who will lock it up with Curtis Demarce in a lightweight bout, has a quiet demeanor and while excited about the opportunity before him, has a much more laid-back approach. Robertson (3-0), who will round out the undercard in a middleweight battle with Andrew Buckland, has an all-out bluster that is sure to endear him to an MFC crowd that likes its fighters will a healthy dose of bravado.

While their avenue towards pre-fight hype differs, both have a desire to show their worthy of the opportunity on the big stage.

“I’m not aggressive by nature, but I like to start quick, put the pressure on early and not give my opponent a chance to get comfortable. I want a quick start and finish things in the first round,” said a reserved-toned Steele, whose unbeaten streak comes complete with a run of stoppages inside the opening five minutes.
Robertson has a more in-your-face way attitude and a nature that leads one to believe he will be attack-minded to back up his talk.

“Basically I like to hurt the other guy. I want to finish the fight and I’ve done so every fight so far,” declared the 25-year-old, whose record includes a pair of first-round stoppages including one over Heat XC veteran Chad Sherman.

“That’s how I go about things. I want to get in there and if I can finish the fight early, all the better. I just bring it and if I see a finish, I go for it. I’m very aggressive and very offensive. I’m focused on what I want to do and that’s finish the fight.”

Steele will get the biggest test of his career against Demarce who has a decided edge in experience with 17 fights to his credit. Yet the six-foot, 23-year-old has a quiet confidence about him.

“I’m ready to take things to the next level and I know I have to take him very seriously,” said Steele. “I think I just have to stick with the game plan and put him in bad positions where he can’t be dangerous. I have to control him to win, put him in bad spots, keep the pressure on, and finish it.”

Steele has the added incentive of making his debut as the first bout of the HDNet Fights televised main card. It’s quite a jump for a young fighter who has fought in obscurity but Steele feels ready for that additional pressure.

“When I got the call I was very excited. To be the first fight on TV, to get that opportunity, I feel very fortunate because that kind of thing doesn’t come along very often,” he said. “Now I want to put on a good show and prove to everyone that I was there for the right reason.”

Robertson, meanwhile, will also be out to prove he belongs in the MFC ranks. Confidence is not an issue for the five-foot-nine Robertson who is counting on years of action in top-rated amateur wrestling circles to suplex any jitters. A former University of Saskatchewan Huskies wrestler, Robertson was ranked as high as fifth in the nation and took on eventual 2004 Olympic champion Cael Sanderson at a prestigious meet in Winnipeg – an event that also featured Josh Koscheck and Muhammad Lawal.

“It’s a big deal to be coming to the MFC but I’m not worried about the nerves or the pressure,” maintained Robertson. “I’m really excited and I’ve increased my training because of it. I’m putting in the extra effort because it’s going to be such a big night.”

AT MGM GRAND IN LAS VEGAS LIVE ON SHOWTIME® ATTACHED

NEW YORK (Aug. 30, 2010) – The World Boxing Organization (WBO) featherweight championship fight between undefeated titlist Juan Manuel “JuanMa” Lopez, of Caguas, Puerto Rico, and Rafael Marquez, of México City has been rescheduled for Saturday, Nov. 6, live on SHOWTIME® (9 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

The 12-round championship bout, originally set for Sept. 18, had to be rescheduled after Marquez injured his right thumb two weeks ago.

“Fortunately, my thumb injury did not prevent me from continuing my conditioning, including running daily,” said Marquez, who proved his durability in an epic four fight series with Israel Vazquez. “I am extremely grateful that my fight with Juan Manuel Lopez was rescheduled so quickly. On November 6, JuanMa and I have a date with destiny. I can’t wait.”

Both Lopez and Marquez bring an exciting style of fighting into the ring. Both are two-division world champions and they boast a combined record of 68 wins with an astounding 61 knockouts, 90 percent. The impending fight is an important crossroads fight for both men, but they are at very different points in their careers.

The southpaw Lopez (29-0, 26 KOs) is 27-years-old and has been fighting professionally for five years. He is a consensus top-10 pound-for-pound fighter and is widely considered a rising star. A win over Marquez would easily be the most significant of his young career. Conversely, Marquez (39-5, 35 KOs) at 35-years-old is well into the second half of a remarkable career. He has fought in 11 world title fights in his 15 years as a pro and he is a virtual lock for the Hall of Fame. A win over Lopez would give him a world title in his third weight division.

“This has become the most important fight of my career,” Marquez said.

JunaMa, the pride of Puerto Rico, earned his first world title by stopping defending WBO junior featherweight champion Daniel Ponce De Leon in the first round in June 2008. After retaining the 122-pound belt five times, winning four by knockout, he abandoned the division to challenge WBO 126-pound champion Steven Luevano on Jan. 28, 2010. Lopez knocked out Luevano in the seventh round.

In his most recent start and lone featherweight title defense, Lopez won his debut on SHOWTIME with an exciting second-round TKO over Bernabe Concepcion on July 10 in Puerto Rico.

Lopez dropped Concepcion in the first minute of the opening round, but Concepcion rallied to score a knockdown at the conclusion of the session. Lopez floored Concepcion twice in the second before the referee halted matters at 2:37.

“I’m looking forward to showing my skills against a great champion like Rafael Marquez, one of the all-time greats and a future Hall of Famer,’’ Lopez said. “It will be the biggest fight of my career.”

It will be the first fight for Marquez, a former International Boxing Federation (IBF) bantamweight champion, since he evened the score with Vazquez at two wins apiece with a dominant third-round knockout last May 22. The fourth encounter of perhaps this era’s greatest boxing rivalry was fought at featherweight; the initial three were at super bantamweight (122 pounds).

The second and third installments between Marquez and Vazquez were named Fight of the Year in 2007 and 2008, respectively, by The Ring.

Besides Vazquez, Marquez boasts victories over world champions Tim Austin, Mauricio Pastrana and Mark “Too Sharp‘’ Johnson (twice each). After he ended the six-year reign of the previously unbeaten Austin with an upset eighth-round knockout in February 2003, Marquez successfully defended the title seven times before moving up in weight to face Vazquez the first time in March 2007.

If successful against Lopez, Rafael and brother Juan Manuel will become the first siblings to win world titles in three different weight classes.

Can Smith & Brands Co-Exist to aid Team USA? Terry Brands answers, talks to TDR

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – USA Wrestling, the national governing body for amateur wrestling in the United States, has named John Smith of Stillwater, Okla., and Terry Brands of Iowa City, Iowa as coaches of the 2010 U.S. Freestyle World Team.

They will work with USA Wrestling National Freestyle Coach Zeke Jones of Colorado Springs, Colo., and the USA Wrestling national coaching staff to lead the team that will compete at the 2010 World Wrestling Championships in Moscow, Russia, Sept. 6-12.

Smith and Brands were selected by USA Wrestling’s Freestyle Coach Selection Committee and approved by USA Wrestling’s Executive Committee.

Smith serves as the head wrestling coach at Oklahoma State University, and Brands is the assistant coach at Iowa. Their programs are annually among the most successful in college wrestling with Oklahoma State having won the most NCAA team titles of any other program.

Both have coached past U.S. World and Olympic teams in freestyle wrestling. Smith was the coach of the 2000 U.S. Olympic Team, as well as the 1998, 1999 and 2009 U.S. World Team Coach. Prior to taking the Iowa position, Brands worked as USA Wrestling’s National Freestyle Resident Coach from 2005-2008, and coached with the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team and three U.S. World Teams (2005-07). Both have coached individual World and Olympic champion wrestlers for the United States.

Both are among the greatest freestyle wrestlers in history, and have been elected as Distinguished Members of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. Smith won two Olympic gold medals (1988, 1992) and four World titles (1987, 1989-91), stringing his six gold medals in consecutive years. Brands was a two-time World champion (1993, 1995) and won an Olympic bronze medal in 2000.

The athletes competing on the 2010 U.S. World Team were determined at the World Team Trials held in Council Bluffs, Iowa, June 11-12.

KEA’s Jose Rodriguez Takes Home the Title

Jose Angel “Silver Boy” Rodriguez, of New York, NY won the vacant IBF North American middleweight belt with a hard-fought twelve round unanimous decision over Russell “Spiderman” Jordan, of Rochester, NY last night at the sold-out Dover Downs Hotel & Casino in Dover, Delaware. In the co-feature, Amir “Hardcore” Mansour, of Penns Grove, NJ brutally stopped Samuel “Showtime” Brown, of Fort Campbell, KY in the second round of a scheduled six round heavyweight contest.

Rodriguez, 156, invested in body work from the start in this battle of lefties, and it paid off down the stretch. Jordan, 160, was out-punched in most of the rounds, but he was in the fight right until the final bell with his edge in power.

Rodriguez (16-2-1, 2 KOs) had Jordan wilting by the fourth round from his body attack. Jordan bounced back to hurt Rodriguez with a big right early in round five. Jordan (15-8, 10 KOs) jumped on Rodriguez, but “Silver Boy” weathered the storm and closed the round out with more body work.

Rodriguez displayed his flashy jab to take round six, but was cut over his left eye in round seven from a Jordan right hook.

The body attack from Rodriguez paid its dividends, as he was able to clearly win the next four rounds. He landed a big right in the eighth, out-jabbed the taller Jordan in the ninth, and pummeled Jordan’s lanky body in round ten. He nearly had a tiring Jordan out in the eleventh.

Both fighters did themselves proud in the final round. Rodriguez could have used his ample boxing skills to stay away from Jordan’s bombs, and Jordan could have packed it in. Instead, both warriors slugged it out for the entire three minutes.

The final scores were 118-110, 117-111, and 115-113, all in favor of Rodriguez.
