COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – USA Wrestling, the national governing body for amateur wrestling in the United States, has named John Smith of Stillwater, Okla., and Terry Brands of Iowa City, Iowa as coaches of the 2010 U.S. Freestyle World Team.

They will work with USA Wrestling National Freestyle Coach Zeke Jones of Colorado Springs, Colo., and the USA Wrestling national coaching staff to lead the team that will compete at the 2010 World Wrestling Championships in Moscow, Russia, Sept. 6-12.

Smith and Brands were selected by USA Wrestling’s Freestyle Coach Selection Committee and approved by USA Wrestling’s Executive Committee.

Smith serves as the head wrestling coach at Oklahoma State University, and Brands is the assistant coach at Iowa. Their programs are annually among the most successful in college wrestling with Oklahoma State having won the most NCAA team titles of any other program.

Both have coached past U.S. World and Olympic teams in freestyle wrestling. Smith was the coach of the 2000 U.S. Olympic Team, as well as the 1998, 1999 and 2009 U.S. World Team Coach. Prior to taking the Iowa position, Brands worked as USA Wrestling’s National Freestyle Resident Coach from 2005-2008, and coached with the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team and three U.S. World Teams (2005-07). Both have coached individual World and Olympic champion wrestlers for the United States.

Both are among the greatest freestyle wrestlers in history, and have been elected as Distinguished Members of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. Smith won two Olympic gold medals (1988, 1992) and four World titles (1987, 1989-91), stringing his six gold medals in consecutive years. Brands was a two-time World champion (1993, 1995) and won an Olympic bronze medal in 2000.

The athletes competing on the 2010 U.S. World Team were determined at the World Team Trials held in Council Bluffs, Iowa, June 11-12.

WBA/IBA Light Heavyweight World Champ On Fast Track To Boxing Stardom

LAST VEGAS (August 30, 2010) – WBA and IBA Light Heavyweight World Champion Beibut Shumenov took the fast track to become world champion, establishing a weight-class record along the way, and now he wants to accelerate his road to stardom.

Shumenov is set on a mission to unify the titles starting with his next bout, hopefully before the year is out.

“I want a unification fight next,” Shumenov said. “I’m ready to fight any of the other champions now. (Jean) Pascal and (Tavoris) Cloud are both good champions and I’d love to fight either one. Throw in world champion Jurgen Brahmer, too. My goal is to unify the titles. I have a lot of respect for all of the other champions but I want their titles.”

“It’s unheard of, a fighter that wants one challenge after another so early in their career,” said Dan Goossen of Goossen Tutor Promotions. “But this is what boxing needs, the most competitive and biggest fights that can be made. The networks should ONLY be looking at these young champions to be facing off with one another. Beibut wants to give the fans want they want to see.”

Shumenov (10-1, 6 KOs), born in Kazakhstan and now living in Las Vegas, wasn’t looking to pad his record from the day he turned pro 2 ½ years ago, after he represented Kazakhstan in the 2004 Olympics.

In his third pro fight, he took on 70-fight veteran Shannon Miller, who was put to sleep in the fourth round of their fight in Memphis, followed only three weeks later in Kazakhstan by a second-round knockout of former WBC Continental Americas champion Donnell Wiggins (24-10-4) for the WBC Asian Boxing Council and Interim PABA light heavyweight belts.

Next up for Shumenov were successful title defenses of the aforementioned crowns, in addition to capturing the vacant WBO Asia Pacific belt against Lavell Finger (26-2) who didn’t make it out of the opening round. Fighting at home for the third straight fight, Shumenov stepped-up to face his stiffest test, former WBC and WBA light heavyweight champion, Montell Griffin (49-7), who sported wins against world champions James Toney (twice) and Roy Jones, Jr. Shumenov pitched a complete, 12-round shutout, winning the unanimous decision by scores of 120-108, 120-108, 120-107.

Back in the U.S., Shumenov squared-off against world title challenger Epifanio Mendoza (28-6-1), who had lost to Chad Dawson in their 2007 world title fight and a year later by a controversial decision to former world champion Jeff Lacy. Beibut defeated Mendoza in Bellevue, Washington by 10-round unanimous decision (100-90, 98-92, 97-93).

From that point on it’s been all world championship fights for Shumenov, who captured the IBA crown last year in Kazakhstan, stopping 2-time world super middleweight champion Byron Mitchell (27-4-1) in the fourth round. In his ninth pro fight, Shumenov unsuccessfully challenged WBA titlist Gabriel Campillo in Kazakhstan, losing a hotly contested, questionable 12-round majority decision.

Beibut bounced back strong in another back-and-forth rematch this past January, winning a 12-round decision against Campillo for the WBA belt in only his 10th pro fight. Shumenov shattered the previous world record for fewest professional fights to capture a major World light heavyweight title, 15, set by Jeff “Hit Man” Harding in 1989.

In his first WBA title defense (July 23) on ESPN Friday Night Fights, Shumenov showed the valuable lessons learned from the prior two Campillo bouts, to totally dominate mandatory challenger and previously unbeaten Vyacheslav Uzelkov (22-0, 13 KOs), displaying speed, aggressiveness and fearlessness right through the closing seconds en route to an overwhelming unanimous decision (118-108, 118-108, 117-109).

His impressive fight against the Ukrainian was only his second with head trainer, Kevin Barry, and first fighting for Goossen Tutor Promotions. The classy Kazakh showed tremendous ability and fought his way side-by-side with the other 175-pound champions. “I have the best trainer in the world, Kevin, and I was 100-percent dedicated to training and completely focused on Uzelkov alone because I signed with Goossen Tutor,” Beibut explained.

Shumenov joined featherweight Aratoly Alexandrov, heavyweight, Oleg “Big O’ Maskaev and cruiserweight Vassily “The Tiger” Jirov as the only Kazakh-born professional world boxing champions.

On the fast track outside of the ring, too, Beibut has a law degree, speaks five languages (Russian, Kazakh, English, Turkish and Uzbek), and along with his brother, Chingis, own a full-service boxing promotional company based in Las Vegas, NV. Boxer Steve Molitor Ready to Topple Another Booth Brother on September 11th in the UK

TORONTO, ON (Monday, August 30, 2010) – If two-time world champion “The Canadian Kid” Steve Molitor (32-1, 12 KO’s) has a home away from home, it would be the United Kingdom. In November of 2006 he captured the IBF Junior Featherweight with a 5th round KO over Michael Hunter, in Hartlepool, and is 3-0 in Great Britain as a professional. But on September 11th, at Sunderland, against Jason Booth (35-5, 15 KO’s) Molitor’s return to the UK will be anything but a homecoming.

Molitor, who’s last ten fights have been in the friendly confines of Casino Rama, in Rama, Ontario, will face not only a hostile crowd – including former Super Middleweight world champ Carl Froch, who pledged his support for Booth – everywhere he turns, but a fighter looking to avenge a loss suffered by brother Nicky Booth in September of 2002.

The fight, billed as “Redemption,” has caught the interest of Sky Sports, who will not only be broadcasting the event, but also producing a documentary styled a la HBO’s 24/7.

But before Molitor makes his way over to the UK, he has a special media workout planned for TOMORROW, Tuesday, August 31, and will conduct one-on-one interviews following his training session.

PROVIDENCE (Aug. 30, 2010) – U.S. Marine Sgt. James Smith has been in the ring at most Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc. (CES) pro boxing shows at Twin River since 2008 as part of the Honor Guard accompanying the singing of the National Anthem. This Friday night, however, Smith will be out of uniform and wearing trunks for his pro debut.

Undefeated Providence super middleweight Vladine Biosse (7-0, 4 KOs) leads the next generation of New England fighters into action on Friday night’s “Labor Daze” card, presented by CES, at the Twin River Event Center in Lincoln, RI.

The Cape Verdean native Biosse (7-0, 4 KOs), a former University of Rhode Island football player, defends his EBA title against Ibahiem “The Almighty” King (7-4, 2 KOs) in the 8-round main event.

Smith, a super welterweight matched against Shawn Pyles (0-1) in a 4-round bout, is originally from Portland, Maine. The 26-year-old has been an active U.S. Marine for the last seven years. He is presently stationed in Rhode Island — living in Warwick with his wife and two children — attached to the Rhode Island Reserves assisting with training for upcoming deployment overseas. Sgt. Smith has done two tours in Iraq.

Sgt. Smith has been on leave since Aug. 23 training for his pro boxing debut, something he has dreamed about since he was a little boy. “I’ve been a gym rat since I was four or five,” he explained. “I remember sitting on my father’s shoulders watching Joey Gamache win the world title (June 13, 1992 when Maine’s favorite son Gamache knocked out Chil Sung Chin in the ninth round at Cumberland Civic Center in Portland). Fighting as a pro has been on my mind since then.”

In 2009, Sgt. Smith captured top honors in the 152-pound decision of the New England Golden Gloves, defeating Michael Andrade. “I’m through with being nervous; now I’m just anxious to get in the ring and succeed in my pro debut,” James added. “I’m taking a realistic approach to boxing. I know what it takes to be world champion having grown up watching Joey Gamache and Marcus Davis (now a UFC star). Maybe someday I’ll get a title shot; I’m only 26 and have some time. I’ll see where it goes.”

Binghamton wrestling adds Borshoff as assistant coach

Former scholar-athlete and NCAA qualifier joins staff for 2010-11 season.

VESTAL, N.Y. — Binghamton University wrestling has filled out its coaching staff with the hiring of Jasen Borshoff, a former NCAA qualifier and Academic All-American from American University.

Borshoff joins head coach Pat Popolizio’s staff after a stellar collegiate career at American University. He was a four-time EIWA placewinner and 2008 NCAA qualifier before graduating cum laude in 2008. Borshoff was a two-time Academic All-American and received his bachelor’s degree in health promotion with a 3.6 grade-point average. He was a six-time Dean’s List honoree and helped the Eagles produce the highest wrestling GPA in the nation two times and second-highest another year.

“Jasen will have an immediate impact on our wrestling program,” Popolizio said. “He is an accomplished wrestler and will bring discipline, character and a strong work ethic to Binghamton University. He will work predominantly with the light weights. I am looking forward to having him this year and the strides our program will make by adding such a creditable person to our staff.”

After graduation, Borshoff worked as a sales associate with Biometrics, a nutrition and fitness company in Maryland, and also was a health coodinator at Virginia Hospital Center.

A Rochester native, Borshoff won 180 scholastic matches and went unbeaten in four years of dual matches. He was a four-time county finalist and sectional champion for Pittsford Sutherland. His father, Tim, was a standout wrestler at Binghamton in the 1970s and was inducted into the University’s Hall of Fame in 2001.

The Bearcats open their 2010-11 season by hosting the Binghamton Open on November 14.

WITHERSPOON COMES FROM BEHIND TO STOP CASTILLO IN SEVEN

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ (August 29, 2010)— Top American Heavyweight Chazz “The Gentleman” Witherspoon came off his longest lay off and struggled through the first six rounds of his scheduled ten round bout with Livin Castillo only to come out for round seven and score a thrilling knockout that headlined a great night a great night of boxing that was promoted by Mike Brestle’s Spartan Fight Promotions at the Trump Taj Mahal Grand Ballroom.

After a pretty even first round, Castillo began to land numerous long left hands to bot the body and head and it looked like Witherspoon was a bit befuddled.

Witherspoon came out in round seven and went for broke and succeeded as he landed a barrage of punches that sent Castillo to the Canvas. Castillo rose to his feet only to be battered all over the ring by an unrelenting flurry by Witherspoon and finally referee Earl Brown stopped the fight at 2:21 of round seven.

It was later found out that Castillo was leading 58-56; 58-56 and 59-55 on all three judges score cards.

“It felt good to be back”, said Witherspoon, who was making his first ring appearance after an almost nine month layoff since a stoppage loss to world ranked Tony Thompson at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.
“My plan was to box and get the ring rust off and then I took him out when my coach (trainer Wade Hinnant) told me it was time to get him out of there.

Witherspoon is now 27-2 with nineteen knockouts.

The co-feature saw Farah Ennis remain undefeated as he used a vicious body assault to take out late replacement Reggie Pena in round three of a scheduled eight round Super Middleweight bout.

In a battle of veterans, former world title challenger Walter Estrada scored a six round split decision over Jose Reyes.

Three local favorites remained undefeated as Isiah Seldon scored his first knockout when he took out Jason Johns in round one of a scheduled four round Super Middleweight bout.

Atlantic City Light Heavyweight Lavarn “Baby Bowe” Harvell dropped eighteen year old Nathan Bedwell three times en route to a four round unanimous decision.

Eugene Soto recovered from two first round knockdowns to gain a controversial majority decision over Maurice Williams in a four round Super Middleweight bout.
