Speak with a U.S. World Team member during the Living the Dream Medal Fund LIVE TELETHON on Friday night

The wrestling community will have a unique opportunity to speak with one of the 2010 U.S. World Team athletes or coaches when they call in for the Living The Dream Medal Fund Telethon & Benefit Webcast on Friday, August 20.

A first-of-its-kind event, this will be broadcast on TheMat.com and Flowrestling.com live from the U.S. Olympic Training Center from 9:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. Eastern time.

This gives fans a way to directly connect with the athletes and coaches that will represent them at the World Championships and support their Olympic dreams with a donation.

The U.S. World Team members in all three Olympic styles and their coaches will take calls from supporters of the fund, after a day of intense training as they go through their final preparation for the 2010 World Wrestling Championships in Moscow, Russia. Sept. 6-12.

The event will be hosted by USA Wrestling broadcast host Jason Bryant, along with Al Bevilacqua, chairman of the Living the Dream Medal Fund project. There will be many special features on this broadcast, which will be a fun and exciting presentation.

Featured on the webcast will be stand-up comic Greg Warren, a past NCAA All-American from Missouri. Greg has been on the stand-up circuit for several years and has a large following. He has been a sensation on Flowrestling with the character Wesley “Wes” Wesley.

The Living the Dream Medal Fund was established to substantially increase the financial rewards for U.S. wrestlers who win Olympic and World medals during this four-year Olympic cycle.

The Living The Dream Medal Fund Telethon & Webcast is a first for USA Wrestling, and is a unique opportunity within the U.S. Olympic family. Once again, the wrestling community is showing its leadership in finding new ways to enhance the sport and support its athletes.

ALL proceeds go directly to the Living The Dream Medal Fund. USA Wrestling will provide the webcast free on its Ustream channel and on the front page of TheMat.com and Flowrestling.com.

The Return of the Big Man, Joey Fendone Returns to Ediniboro as Asst. Coach

EDINBORO, Pa. (August 17, 2010) – Edinboro University Director of Athletics Bruce Baumgartner announced today the hiring of Joey Fendone as assistant coach for the wrestling team. Fendone joins Cliff Moore as an assistant under Tim Flynn, who will enter his 14th year as the head coach this year. He replaces Kyle Cerminara, who left earlier this summer to join the staff at Pennsylvania.

A former standout for the Fighting Scots, Fendone served as a volunteer assistant with the Fighting Scots a year ago. Flynn is pleased to have Fendone as a full-time member of his staff. “I think Joe will do an outstanding job,” related Flynn. “He knows what our program is all about and he relates very well with our team.”

A four-time national qualifier. Fendone wrapped up his career in 2009 with his third trip to Nationals at heavyweight, along with qualifying once at 197 lbs. He concluded his career tied for 19th in career wins with a 105-40 record. He ranks second in career falls with 45.

As a fifth-year senior Fendone won his second PSAC title while recording a 30-8 record at heavyweight. That included 20 falls to tie Deonte Penn’s school record. Fendone ended the year ranked 12th by InterMat and 14th by Amateur Wrestling News. He finished second at the EWL Championships to qualify for Nationals, and then went 3-2 in St. Louis. He took home first place at the Oklahoma Gold Classic.

As a junior Fendone finished with an 18-11 record with six falls. he was hampered by an ankle injury that forced him to miss a month of the season, but he still finished the year ranked 12th by Amateur Wrestling News and 17th by InterMat. He placed third at both the EWL Tournament and PSAC Championships.

Fendone fell one win shy of earning All-American honors in his first season as a heavyweight as a sophomore. He capped a 28-12 season with a great run at Nationals, losing to national runnerup Aaron Anspach of Penn State, 11-1, in the quarterfinals, before coming back with a pair of wins in the wrestlebacks. He decisioned Kyle Massey of Wisconsin, 10-7, then picked up his biggest win as a heavyweight with a 4-3 decision over Iowa’s Matt Fields, who was seeded seventh. With All-American status on the line, suffered his fourth loss to Bloomsburg’s Mike Spaid, but extended the ninth seed to sudden victory before losing 6-4.

He was a wildcard selection to Nationals in 2006-07 after finishing fourth at the EWL Tournament. He finished second at the PSAC Championships, falling to Spaid in the finals.

Fendone began his career at 197 lbs. He enjoyed a cinderella season, taking over as the starter at 197 lbs. in mid-January, then proceeding to dominate the competition, running off 13 straight wins at one point to climb into the national rankings. He ended the year with a 29-9 ledger and ranked second on the team with 11 falls, tied for the 17th-most in school history. In his first trip to Nationals he went 1-2. He placed second at the EWL Tournament and picked up the title at PSAC Championships. He was named to Amateur Wrestling News’ 2006 All-Rookie Team, on the fourth team.

Fendone was a highly-touted recruit who was only the second wrestler ever to win three New England Tournament titles and a three-time Massachusetts state champion. He captured three Massachusetts state championships at 215 lbs. at Central Catholic High School in massachusetts, and set the school record with a 176-6 career record and had 120 falls, also a school record.

He was twice named the Boston Globe Wrestler of the Year and was a four-time All-State and Boston Herald All-State team selection . He posted the first undefeated record in school history as a senior (36-0).

Fendone received his bachelor’s degree in Sports Administration in May 2009. His brother Shawn will be a fifth-year senior on the Fighting Scots and competes at 197 lbs.

Matt Hill returns to The Golden Flashes as Assistant Coach, Talks to TDR

Now in his second stint at Kent State, Matt Hill returned to the wrestling staff in the summer of 2010 as a full-time assistant coach. A three-time NCAA qualifier at Edinboro, Hill served as a graduate assistant at KSU from 2007-09.

“Matt takes the approach that it’s all about hard work,” Head Wrestling Coach Jim Andrassy said. “His philosophy is to get guys to work harder than ever before to improve. We had a lot of good candidates for this position and it was a very tough decision. But ultimately we felt that Matt gives our athletes the best chance to improve on what we’ve been doing.”

Hill has remained involved in wrestling over the past year working with Seneca Valley High School and the Freedom Wrestling Youth Club.

During Hill’s two seasons as a graduate assistant, the Golden Flashes produced 11 national qualifiers, went 29-8 in dual meets and captured a 2009 MAC regular season title.

While at Edinboro, Hill compiled 105 career victories, going 32-7 as a senior. That year, he went 17-1 in dual meets and won the 157-pound championship at the Michigan State Open. Edinboro earned top 10 finishes at the NCAA Championships in both his junior and senior seasons.

Hill is married to the former Stephanie Novak.

Mark Reiland Named 2010 USA Wrestling Junior Person of the Year

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO — Former Hawkeye NCAA champion and All-American Mark Reiland has been named Junior Person of the Year by USA Wrestling, the national governing body for amateur wrestling in the United States. This award goes to a nationally respected leader who works with athletes and programs on the Junior level (grades 9-12).

Reiland is the head coach for Iowa City West High School, one of the nation’s top prep programs. He has served as head coach there for 12 years. His teams have won four state dual meet titles, two traditional state team titles and eight MVC Conference Tournament titles. Reiland and his staff were named Coaches of the Year in the conference three times (01, 07′ and ’10) and were also named the Southeast Iowa District 3A Coaches of the Year in five times.

The athletes from Iowa City West have been extremely successful in USA Wrestling age-group competitions. He has had five Junior National champions and 18 Junior All-Americans in Fargo over the past eight years. During the same time, he has coached six Cadet National champions and 19 Cadet All-Americans in Fargo.

Previously, he served as head coach for Solon High School for two years, and an assistant coach at Iowa City West High School for five years.

Reiland is respected for his hard work and dedication to wrestling in his state, and his willingness to do whatever he can to provide quality opportunities to young people within the sport.

“This biggest thing is that we do this for the kids. It is rewarding for that purpose. You don’t get into this for awards or to be recognized by your peers. It is the athletes who are driving me to do more for the sport,” said Reiland.

Reiland has served eight years as the state chairperson for Iowa USA Wrestling. He also served previously as Iowa’s Junior Director for four years. He has served on USA Wrestling’s Board of Directors for five years, and as a member of the Executive Committee for two years. Reiland has been on the Junior Olympic Wrestling Committee for five years, and a member of the Junior Division Executive Committee for six years. He served as Co-Chair of USA Wrestling’s National Coaches Council for five years, and has been a member of the Coaches Council for seven years.

Iowa has been successful as a state within USA Wrestling’s major competitions. During his years as state chairperson, Iowa has won the National Junior Duals in freestyle, and has won Junior National team titles in Fargo in both styles, as well as a Cadet National team title in Greco-Roman.

As an athlete, Reiland was a NCAA champion and two-time All-American for the University of Iowa, competing from 1989-92. He also won two state titles for Eagle Grove High School in Iowa, and was a Junior National double champion.

Coach Freije begins his first season as assistant wrestling coach for the Mavericks

Freije was an assistant coach at Western State College last season and helped guide the Mountaineers to a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference/Super Region 4 Championship title. WSC boasted 1 National Champion and 3 NCAA Division II All-Americans.

A graduate of Western State College (2009) he was an RMAC/Super Region 4 champion and a 2009 NCAA Division II national finalist. In 2009 the Mountaineers clinched the RMAC/Super Region 4 team title.

A native of Mesa, Arizona he was a 5A Arizona State Champion and East Valley Region Champion.

Freije has over five years experience as a camp clinician and will assist Head Coach Chuck Pipher with the MSC wrestling camps. As an assistant at WSC his responsibilities included implementing preseason and in-season weight training programs, individual workouts, film sessions, video coordinator and the recruitment of student-athletes.

Freije earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Exercise and Sports Science from Western State College.
