TIM “The Maine-iac” SILVA: “I don’t know how to follow Matt’s speech (see below). I was laughing the whole time. I’m feeling great. I’m stoked to fight Paul. We go way back. We were supposed to fight a couple of times. We’ve both had hiccups. I’m sorry for Pedro (Rizzo). At first, I was supposed to fight him, but there was a change. Maybe he can fight the winner. (Powerhouse CEO Brian Manna later announced that Rizzo would be fighting on the next Powerhouse card.) This is a great card, an awesome show. I go way back with Lambert and Jens. I’ve gone through a lot of changes. I kind of had a 2-year layoff and I’ve been working more on my Jiu Jitsu. Don’t be surprised to see my ground game in this fight.”

PAUL “The Headhunter” BUENTELLO: “It’s a crazy card. I’m glad to be here. Powerhouse called and asked if I wanted a job. I said I was ready to fight. This fight was supposed to happen before. Tim’s been around a long time and I think he’s still at his best. He knows how to win and I’m glad to be fighting him. I’m up for the challenge and I know he is, too. I’m going for it. It’s going to be a great fight.”

JASON “The Punisher” LAMBERT: “I’ve been around awhile, like Jens said, back when nobody knew what it (MMA) was all about. I’d say I had a fight coming up and people would ask if I boxed. Now everybody knows and every kid I see is wearing a Tapout shirt. It’s crazy how far this sport has come. I’ve trained my butt off to put on a good show. I’m going for a highlight reel, win or lose. I’m always looking to finish. Hopefully, my opponent (Tony Lopez) comes in good shape for us to put on a great show.”

Exciting Night of Fights Tonight At Dodge Theatre, in Phoenix, Ariz., Live on SHOWTIME®

PHOENIX, Ariz. (Aug. 11, 2010) – Joe “Diesel” Riggs, Ryan Couture and the four ladies set to compete in the first-ever STRIKEFORCE women’s welterweight (135 pounds) tournament took part in an open workout for the media at the Riches Wrestling Complex on the campus of Arizona State University on Wednesday.

STRIKEFORCE women’s welterweight contenders Miesha “Takedown” Tate, Carina “Beauty But The Beast” Damm, Hitomi “Girlfight Monster” Akano and Maiju Kujala will join Riggs and Couture at STRIKEFORCE Challengers this Friday, Aug. 13, at Dodge Theatre in Phoenix, Ariz., live on SHOWTIME®.

The winners of each semifinal bout on Friday will face off in the tournament final later that night, just before the main event matchup between Riggs (32-12) and Louis Taylor (6-1) that will be fought at a catch weight of 182 pounds. Couture, a member of the Las Vegas, Nev., based Xtreme Couture fight team, will face Lucas Stark of Chandler, Ariz. in a three-round lightweight (155 pounds) bout.

During Thursday’s weigh-ins, current undefeated STRIKEFORCE Women’s Welterweight Champion Sarah Kaufman and STRIKEFORCE Women’s Middleweight (145 pounds) Champion Cris Cyborg will meet fans and be available for autographs. The media is invited to the Dodge Theatre at 4:30 p.m. with fighter’s stepping on the scales at 5 p.m.

What the fighters had to say on Wednesday:

JOE RIGGS
“When I started out fighting on shows in high school and after that I made dog crap money. Now, I’m able to support a family of four. MMA is definitely getting bigger, especially in Phoenix.

“I can’t predict how things will go Friday night. I always expect the worst, train for the worst and just hope for the best. You just never know in this sport. There’s just so many different ways of losing. If you want to take a fight at this level you have to train at this level and that’s what I’ve done. I’ll do my best to put him out.”

On the women’s tournament:

“It’s great. They are always exciting. I saw Miesha (Tate) fight up in Minnesota when I was up there fighting last year and she’s very exciting.

“That tournament style is hard. I’ve done it and it’s no picnic. You come out with just an hour’s rest a little banged up and you feel injuries you didn’t even know you had during the fight. My hat’s off to them.

RYAN COUTURE

“Initially I was a huge fan of the sport watching Dad compete growing up. I just picked it up after school to stay in shape. I never really thought of this as a career. I was working at a bank in Washington and my Dad invited me to come out and train with him and I thought it would be good to get closer to him and be involved in the family business.

“The more I was around it and the more I trained, the more I realized this is what I wanted to do. I was a little apprehensive at first because of all the eyes on me because of my last name.

“I don’t really feel pressure now because of the name. I’ve been waiting for that to kind of sink in but it hasn’t. But I get more attention and do a lot more interviews at this stage of my career. I feel it just comes as part of the job and it just happened to me a little sooner than it comes for most.

“It was nice to size up my opponent physically today. He’s kind of like I expected. I like the matchup for me. From the tape I watched he likes to get the fight to the ground and that’s where I’ve won all my fights. So I’m looking for a nice scrap on Friday. He seems like a nice kid but that’s not going to stop me from hitting him in the face.

“I know he’s a local fighter but I’m expecting to have a big group come down from Las Vegas so I expect to hear them. But he will have the majority of the arena on his side. It’s not something I’m too concerned with. Once you get in the cage all that doesn’t matter anyway.

“My Dad will be in my corner on Friday. He doesn’t put any added pressure on me. He kind of hangs back and lets me come to him. He’s a fantastic resource to have of course. If I have any questions or concerns he’s always there for me. He’s thought I’ve been ready for awhile so he’s excited to see me finally get out here.”

MIESHA TATE

“I put a game plan together for each one of the girls but, realistically, in a tournament all you can do is prepare to be the best fighter that night.

“All I do is eat, breathe, sleep thinking victory. A loss doesn’t even cross my mind. That’s all I’m focused on right now. It doesn’t matter who or how. Just winning.

“I think I am the favorite. In my opinion I am. If you read stuff on the Internet and the message boards I think people are picking me to win. That’s the consensus.

“Being a part of this tournament is monumental because it’s helping push MMA to the forefront. STRIKEFORCE has shown they believe in and want to promote women’s fighting. The way I look at this entire tournament thing is that potentially I’m three fights from being a world champion.

“I’ve competed in tournaments and I’ve made mistakes in them. One thing is it’s natural when you’re competing to have that adrenaline dump once you’re done. You think, ‘Thank God that’s over’ and win lose or draw you’re done and you can relax. In a tournament you have to keep that going and you can’t let that momentum drop. So that’s going to be the biggest thing. Just going back and preparing as if you haven’t even fought before.

“I think 30 minutes rest is about the perfect time. It’s just enough time to go down and get fully recovered. Get your heart rate back to resting and then you have five, maybe 10 minutes just to chill out. Drink some water and get a good warm-up.

“I’ve been looking forward to Sarah Kaufman since 10 seconds after we fought last year. I think she’s my most sought after rematch.”

MAIJU KUJALA

“I have fought in the tournament style before so I have my own game plan and have prepared for each of the fighters. I know how to manage two fights in one night.

“STRIKEFORCE has done a good job and is making the whole week easy. They are not making it difficult on the fighters.

“I see there being a lot of wrestling. I think it’s possible to see some standup and some punches exchanged. I think since all the four fighters strengths are on the ground that it could definitely be a good opportunity for me to stay standing and see if I can hurt them with my punches.

“I think the audience knows I love fighting and that I bring my heart and my soul into each of my fights. They know I really enjoy fighting. We have some tricks but you’ll have to tune in on Friday to see what we have planned.

“MMA fighting is big in Finland but here it’s on a whole different level. There’s a huge crowd every time and I’m expecting to see the Dodge Theatre filled.

“This is a good opportunity for me and a huge event. I enjoy fighting anywhere. It doesn’t matter where it is.”

CARINA DAMM

“I’ve trained for this fight and I’m ready. The winner of these fights will get a shot at the world championship so that’s what I want. Nobody knows how important this is for me.

“I’m ready to fight anybody. Just tell me who I’m fighting and I’ll be ready for them.”

HITOMI AKANO

“I’m feeling relaxed and excited. I’m ready. This is the first time I am seeing all the girls in person so in terms of size, they are what I expected so that’s good.

“My strategy is to take the initiative and be aggressive on offense.

“One thing I can say is that all the girls are exceptional athletes and I fit right into that mold so it should be a very competitive night of fights.”

Paris Bennett to sing National Anthem

PWP CEO Brian Manna announced today that American Idol, Season Three finalist Paris Bennett will sing the National Anthem.

Palomino (31-4-3, 19) is involved in marketing for Powerhouse World Promotions. Originally, he explained, Saturday night’s show was going to be a boxing-MMA hybrid show, but when negotiations dragged on for two proposed world title fights, it was decided that Powerhouse’s first show would be entirely MMA.

“The idea was to draw audiences from boxing and MMA,” Palomino said. “We weren’t able to do that for this time, eliminating boxing, but plan to for our next show. I got involved with Powerhouse because my good friend, 2-time MMA Trainer of the Year Tony Martinez, called to see of I’d be interested. At first, being a boxer, I didn’t understand what they were doing (in MMA), even when they were standing and fighting. But my older brother is a construction worker and he told me they all loved MMA. Three years ago, I got a call from one of the Gracie brothers asking if I’d come to his gym in Torrance. He had three boys – 19, 20 and 21 – who were becoming cage fighters. They hired me for six months to train them to box. After each session, they showed me what they did on the ground and I understand that they can’t smother themselves on the ground. They’re deadly. I had a different perspective and learned a little about what they did on the ground.

“I’ve learned to appreciate MMA. In boxing, we’re taught to turn and give minimal targets, not square-up like they do in MMA. Now, though, I understand that they have to fight like that to protect themselves from kicks and being taken down. It’s hard for them to turn on punches (from that stance), which is why they throw a lot of arm and looping punches. It’s a different game like tapping out. Quitting is the worst thing in boxing but, in MMA; if they don’t tap-out they could break a wrist, arm or other bones.

“To me, it’s amazing to watch them fight. Fighters with strong wrestling backgrounds do well. Some guys can really stand and throw good punches, too. It’s quickly become a very competitive sport. Kids love it. It’s a very interesting, different time for fighters and fans.”

In the co-main event, former WEC titlist Jason “The Punisher” Lambert (25-11-0) takes on former King of the Cage heavyweight and light heavyweight champion, Tony “Kryptonite” Lopez (18-4-0), for the vacant PWP Light Heavyweight title belt.

In the third of three PWP title fights on the card (5 X 5, all other fights are 3 X 5), former IFL middleweight champion Matt “The Fighting Hippy” Horwich (22-13-1) meets former UFC title challenger Thales Leites (17-3-1) for the PWP middleweight crown.

Former UFC Lightweight Champion Jens “Little Evil” Pulver (22-13-1) is in a crossroads fight against Diego “El Nino” Garijo (4-1-0) in a Special Lightweight Attraction.

BUDDY ROBERTS ADDED; CARD SET FOR AUGUST 28TH IN FALLON

August 11th, 2010 RENO – The fight card is set for the third annual Rural Rumble. This sensational event is presented by the City of Fallon and Let’s Get It On Promotions.

Added to the show is local favorite MMA star Buddy “The Vanilla Gorilla” Roberts (9-2) as he faces off against veteran BJ “Da Beast” Lacy from Las Vegas. Roberts has been dominant in his recent hometown performances. He successfully stopped Alijah Reni in December and Rick Randolph in May. Roberts and Lacy will fight at a maximum of 205 lbs.

Middleweight prospect Brandon “Flawless” Gonzales faces a tough foe in Byron “The Truth” Tyson (9-1, 4 KOs) from Los Angeles. This will be Gonzales’ first fight with new trainer Jeff Mayweather, uncle of Floyd Mayweather Jr. Mayweather has a stellar resume as a trainer, working with a number of high profile boxers.

Fan favorite lightweight, “Lighning” Lonnie Smith (10-2-2, 8 KOs) takes a big step up in competition as he faces off against Lowell Brownfield (11-5, 4 KOs). Brownfield has never been stopped in his five losses. His chin will provide a test for Smith’s power and aggressive style.

FARAH ENNIS TO BATTLE DAVID THOMAS IN EIGHT ROUND CO-FEATURE ON AUGUST 28TH IN ATLANTIC CITY

Ennis –Thomas co-feature; Chazz Witherspoon – Livin Castillo will battle in the 10 round Heavyweight main event

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ (August 11, 2010)—On Saturday night August 28th at the beautiful Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, Spartan Fight Promotions presents BATTLE #I with a terrific main event as top American heavyweight, Chazz “The Gentleman” Witherspoon will take on Livin Castillo in a ten round bout.

In the exciting co-feature, undefeated Super Middleweight Farah Ennis will battle heavy handed David Thomas.

Ennis of Philadelphia has a record of 15-0 with nine knockouts and is quickly becoming a force in the loaded Super Middleweight division.

He has been one of the most active fighters around as this will be his fifth fight in 2010 and he has stepped the competition with each bout. His previous four bouts have produced knockout victories for Ennis.

The twenty-seven year old has a very diverse style as he has won fights by displaying his terrific boxing ability while in other bouts he has shown awesome knockout power like the aforementioned bouts.

In those bouts, Ennis has stopped Emanuel Gonzalez (9-6) in three rounds, Frankie Santos (17-8-4) in two rounds, Steve Walker (24-24) in one round and in his most recent outing, Ennis stopped grizzled veteran Demetrius Davis (20-23-5) in three rounds on July 30th in Philadelphia.

The twenty-seven year old Ennis turned pro in February of 2006 by scoring a second round stoppage over Sylvester Golding in Philadelphia.

He has fought up and down the east coast by fighting in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Tennessee and this will be his first fight in New Jersey.

He is the brother of currant USBA Jr. Middleweight champion, Derek “Pooh” Ennis.

Thomas of Evansville, Indiana is known for prodigious punching power as he has a record of 10-1-2 with eight knockouts.

Of those eight stoppages, seven have come in the first round with the remaining knockout being a second round knockout.

Like Ennis, Thomas is twenty-seven years old. Thomas turned pro on September 10, 2005 and he was undefeated in his first eight bouts by going 6-0-2. His lone loss came to capable Durrell Richardson (10-2) via unanimous decision.

Thomas has won four straight with three knockouts. In his last two bouts, Thomas has scored first round knockouts over Dennis Ogboo (6-2) and veteran trial horse James Morrow (11-16-3).

In a six round Lightweight bout, Vineland, New Jersey’s Jose “El Gallo” Reyes will see action against an opponent to be named.

Reyes has a record of 23-7 with eight knockouts and will be looking to get back in the win column and re-establishing himself as a top contender in the 135 pound division
Reyes won fifteen of his first sixteen bouts which included a win over future world title challenger Rogers Mtagwa (14-6-2) and former world champion Juan Polo Perez (46-32-4).

Reyes then dropped three of four to top competition with two being former world champions in Kevin Kelley (55-6-2) and Cristobal Cruz (33-9-1) as well as future world title challenger Czar Amonsot (15-1-1).

Reyes made a statement during a four fight winning streak as he beat former world champion Javier Jauregui (51-13-2); tough contender Ivan Valle (26-6-1) and heralded prospect Noe Bolanos (20-2).

Reyes continues to fight the best of the light division as he has dropped three in a row but fought very well against future world title challenger Antonio DeMarco (19-1-1) in a fight that was ruled a split decision. Many that watched the fight ringside and watching around the country on SHO BOX though that Reyes could have got the decision.

In his last two bouts, Reyes was giving future world title challenger Antonio Pitalua (46-6-1) a boxing lesson by taking the first five rounds before walking into a punch and being knocked out in the sixth.

Reyes very suitable opponent will be announced shortly.

Local prospects will highlight the rest of the undercard and they will include Super Middleweight Joel De La Paz (5-0, 4 KO’s); Light Heavyweight Lavarn “Baby Bowe” Harvell (5-0, 2 KO’s); Exciting Bantamweight prospect Qa’id Muhammad (5-0, 5 KO’s); Super Middleweight Eugene Soto (2-0,1 KO; Jr. Middleweight Ismael Garcia (2-0, 1 KO); Rounding out the card will be Super Middleweight Isiah Seldon (1-0) who is the son of the former WBC Heavyweight champion, Bruce Seldon. All those undefeated prospects will compete in four round bouts.
