After handing Juan Diaz a second loss in their two head to head match ups, WBA lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez called out a familiar name. “The Mexicans, the Filipinos, everyone wants to see it (a third fight with welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao). I’ll be ready for November, and hopefully Pacquiao will take the fight.”

Well one thing is certain. JMM will fight in November according to his trainer, Nacho Beristain, but as for whom he will face come fight night?

“We are fighting Michael Katsidis in November out of obligation.”

Beristain informed me that his fighter, JMM, is currently in Los Angeles meeting with GB representatives to cement this fight.

“The fight with Pacquiao isn’t going to happen. I don’t believe it’s ever going to happen again because Bob Arum isn’t trying to make this fight happen.”

Not trying to make this fight happen?

Who wouldn’t want to see a third clash between these to combatants?

The answer? The businessman that stands to gain in the short run, but lose more in the future. After twenty-four rounds of brutality, one thing is certain, JMM is a TRUE threat and viable foe for the Top Rank’s cash cow, Manny P.

Beristain insisted to me that he and his student not only knpow how to win, but DID win already.

“We came from behind after stumbling early in our first fight with him (Pacquiao) to a draw decision. But in our last fight with him, we beat him by two points.”

So with the Katsidis fight being confirmed by Beristain, I took the opportunity to have him handicap a potential clash between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao.

“Floyd Mayweather is special; a gift. He is very difficult to fight because it’s very hard to hit him. His defense is strong and hard to breakthrough.”

“In fighting Manny, Floyd will be bigger and have those quick hands.”

“With Manny, you’ve got a fighter that doesn’t showboat. He is quick, but not as quick as Mayweather,” Beristain continued, ” but I will say that he is definitely a fighter that knows how to hit. He is a spectacular fighter.”

“I won’t comment on who I think wins this fight. That is for the time when they fight.”

In addition to providing his thoughts on the Floyd/Manny showdown, Beristain also gave his insight on the potential “fight of the year” rumble between his former student, Rafael Marquez and current WBO featherweight sensation, Juanma Lopez.

The two are to meet on September 18 at the MGM GRAND in Las Vegas for Lopez’s title. The bout will air live on SHOWTIME Network.

Said Beristain, “Rafa and I parted ways due to scheduling conflicts. He wanted me to be available to him when I couldn’t be so he went on his own to train with a new coach.”

“I believe this fight is going to be great, but the outcome will be Lopez winning.”

Beristain is confident in his prediction because as he told this scribe, “JuanMa is younger, stronger, faster, and hits harder than Rafa ever did.”

So the question becomes, who you got? Floyd over Manny? JuanMa over Rafa?

OFFICIAL TIE-BREAK REGULATIONS FOR SEMI-FINAL SEEDING

NEW YORK (August 10, 2010)–With the third and final Group Stage of round-robin matches in the Super Six World Boxing Classic fast approaching, SHOWTIME Sports® announced on Tuesday the official tie-break regulations for Semi-Final seeding.

Following Group Stages 1 and 2, only WBA world super middleweight champion Andre Ward has locked up one of the four coveted Semi-Final berths while no other fighter has been eliminated from contention. With the five other competitors still alive—separated by three points or less—Group Stage 3 promises to deliver the most dramatic and compelling fights of the groundbreaking tournament.

COMPLETE TIE BREAK INFORMATION

If two boxers are tied in points after the Group Stage bouts, the seeding will be determined as follows:

1. Head-To-Head: If the tied boxers had fought each other, the winner of that bout will be seeded above the other.
2. Knockouts: If the two had NOT fought head-to-head or if they fought to a draw, the boxer with the most tournament KOs/TKOs will be seeded above the other.
3. Scorecards*: If they remain tied after the KO/TKO test, then the seeding is determined by the total scorecard points earned by the fighters from each of their Group Stage bouts. The boxer with more scorecard points will be seeded above the other.

If more than two boxers are tied in points after the Group Stage bouts, the seeding will be determined as follows:

1. Knockouts: The boxer with the most tournament KOs/TKOs will be seeded above the tied competitors.
2. Scorecards*: If two or more boxers remain tied after the KO/TKO test, then the seeding is determined by the total scorecard points earned by the fighters from each of their Group Stage bouts. The boxers will be seeded from highest total scorecard points to the lowest.

* Those boxers who win prior to the final bell (via KO/TKO/DQ/Tech Decision, etc.) earn 10 points for each incomplete round. Those who lose earn 8 points in a KO/TKO round and 9 points for each subsiquent round.

GROUP STAGE 3 BREAKDOWN

The Super Six World Boxing Classic continues on Saturday, Sept. 25, when SHOWTIME® presents a world championship doubleheader to kick off Group Stage 3—the final Group Stage of the round-robin portion of the tournament. First, Mikkel Kessler will look to lock up a spot in the Semi Finals when he faces Allan Green. Kessler is making the first defense of his second world title, the WBC 168-pound strap he wrested from Carl Froch last April. Green desperately needs a win to have a shot at the Semi Finals. Following his loss to Andre Ward, Green may need a knockout and/or help from his fellow competitors to earn one of the four spots.

Immediately following, live on SHOWTIME, Ward will face 2004 U.S. Olympic teammate and friend Andre Dirrell in a highly anticipated matchup between the talented, breakout American stars. Although Ward has already locked up his Semi-Final berth as the only contestant to win both initial Group Stage matches, he promises a fierce defense of his WBA world championship belt and undefeated professional record. Dirrell, conversely, needs a win to guarantee his place in the Semis. Conceivably, Dirrell could get in with two points but he would need help from Green and/or Arthur Abraham.

On Saturday, Oct. 2, from the city/state Principality of Monaco, Arthur Abraham and Froch will meet at the Chapiteau de l’Espace for their pivotal Group Stage 3 matchup, the last of the Group Stage bouts. Following Abraham vs. Froch, the four fighters with the highest point totals on the Super Six World Boxing Classic scoreboard will advance to the Semi Finals, tentatively slated for the first quarter 2011.

Abraham is currently in second place with three points by virtue of his knockout victory over Jermain Taylor in Group Stage 1. But in Group Stage 2, Abraham was out boxed by Dirrell and ultimately disqualified for the first professional loss of his career. Froch remains tied with Kessler and Dirrell at two points.

Sam Webb, James Cook And Ali Forbes To Guest On Steve Bunce’s Boxing Hour Thursday 12th August

British Middleweight Champion Sam Webb, Former British & European Super Middleweight Champion James Cook and Former British Champion and World Title challenger Ali Forbes will be guests on Steve Bunce’s BBC London Radio show (94.9 & DAB @ 9pm) this coming Thursday evening.

The famous trio of champions will be discussing their upcoming Charity 20/20 Cricket match, at Beckley Park Cricket Ground, Rectory Lane, Beckley, which is to raise funds for Tenterden Amateur Boxing Club, Pedro Amateur Boxing Club and Beckley Park Cricket Club.

James Cook, the driving force behind the Pedro Amateur Boxing Club in Clapton, London, which celebrates it’s first Birthday in September, said “We’re boxers, all boxers careers started at one Amateur club or another. It’s only right that we show our support for Amateur Boxing Clubs. It’s important for them to have funding so they can continue to do the great work they do.

If it wasn’t for clubs like Tenterden and Pedro, we wouldn’t have even got to fight let alone win championships.

Great Britain has a history of producing World Champions like David Haye, Frank Bruno, Lennox Lewis, Joe Calzaghe, Nigel Benn, Ricky Hatton, Alan Minter and so many others. The fighters and Coker participated in a national media conference call to discuss their bouts on the upcoming STRIKEFORCE Houston event at Toyota Center in Houston on Saturday, Aug. 21, LIVE on SHOWTIME® at 10 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).

In the main event of a World Championship Doubleheader, undefeated STRIKEFORCE World Light Heavyweight Champion “King Mo’’ Lawal (7-0) will make the first defense of his crown against highly touted Brazilian Rafael “Feijao’’ Cavalcante (9-2).

In a featured televised bout, unbeaten and rising heavyweight star Bobby Lashley will take on MMA veteran and Tucson, Ariz., firefighter Chad Griggs. Griggs (8-1) has earned six of his eight victories in the first round with seven of eight coming by way of knockout. Lashley (5-0) is a former collegiate wrestling star for Missouri Valley College and member of The United States Army. The former WWE and TNA wrestling star made his MMA debut in December of 2008. This will be his second start for STRIKEFORCE.

On Thursday at 2 p.m. ET/11 a.m. PT four more fighters participating in the Houston event will be available on a conference call. They include American military hero and middleweight contender Tim Kennedy; world-class submission specialist and Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Jacare Souza; former world lightweight champion K.J. Noons and talented, crowd-pleasing striker Jorge Gurgel.

“KING MO” LAWAL:

“Feijao knows he wants the knock out. He doesn’t want the submission. He trains in the ground game, but I’m training with guys in Jiu-Jitsu that are comparable. So I’m not worried at the ground at all because I’ve got good submission defense.

“My toughest tests so far have been the training. The fights are the easy part. The tough part is training. As far as a plan goes or strategy, I have five of six different plans and pick one going in. If that one doesn’t work I just change it up and go to another one. With (Gegard) Mousasi he was coming up so hard that I had to go for the take down. My plan with Mousasi was to hit him a few times and make him stand and frustrate him. Then I was able to capitalize and get the take down.”

How do you think you would do against Anderson Silva?

“I don’t know. If you ask me if I could beat anybody I’m going to say I can beat anybody. I’d win against anybody with a good game plan. It doesn’t matter who it is. Except my momma. It doesn’t matter who it is, I’ll beat them with a good game plan.

“I wouldn’t mind fighting Fabrico (Werdum), who’s the top dog right now. I wouldn’t mind fighting at heavyweight a few times. I just like fighting. A belt is a belt. I fight because I like to fight first and for the belt second.

“I’ve only been fighting for two years. There’s no pressure on me whatsoever. If there’s pressure on anybody it’s Feijao. He has the name. He’s been fighting longer and he’s been training longer. I remember watching Feijao just mashing people in the IFL. I think people look at me as having the bigger name but I don’t care. I think he’s the favorite. I’m the underdog even though I’m the champ.

“I may be implementing a new style like from Bernard Hopkins, one of my favorite boxers. I’m going to implement his style. And maybe if that doesn’t work than a little of Paul Williams. So you’ll all be seeing some new stuff from me.”

RAFAEL “FEIJAO” CAVALANTE:

“I have been working hard for not just this fight, but for my dream, every day for six years.

“When you have a job like a fighter you have to learn to be a full-time fighter. That’s what I’ve learned. You eat healthy food and work at maintaining your weight.

“I don’t think King Mo is going to want to stay on the ground with me. I will be ready for whatever style he wants. If he wants to stand up, I will stand up. If he wants to go to the ground, we will go to the ground.”

You’re English has improved greatly. How important is it for fighters to speak English to be embraced by the American fans?

“I think it’s important. It shows respect and I think more of the Americans are learning who I am. (Speaking English) shows what we really feel. When you use a translator they never say the same thing you want them to say. It’s just different. When I’m thinking something I can say it exactly the way I want so I think it’s important.

“I think this fight is going to be a war and the crowd is going to love it.”

BOBBY LASHLEY:

“I’m just very excited about my training right now. I’ve been training down here with (Daniel) Cormier and Cain Velasquez. I feel better than I’ve ever felt coming into a fight. This is just another one of those tests. I’m coming in bigger, better and faster than I ever have. So I’m pretty confident coming into this fight.

“I think (Griggs) might be underestimated. I He’s got an 8-1 record and he’s got a lot of knockouts to his credit. I’m coming in at 5-0 so I think he’s right in line as an opponent for me. I don’t think anyone is thinking I should be fighting Fedor who has 30 wins under his belt. (The media) are going to say what they are going to say but I think this is a good test for me. I think he’s a great fighter and he’s got a great record. Before I didn’t know what my level was, but just training with Cain and Cormier has shown me I can compete at that level. If this fight goes the way I hope it goes I’m going all the way to the top. I know what my abilities are.”

How soon do you expect to be fighting for the STRIKEFORCE heavyweight title?

“Hopefully at the first part of next year. I don’t know when my next fight will be. That’s up to Scott Coker to decide. I’m not going to take any time off. I like to train and I want to stay conditioned. After this fight I just hope to keep training and get that title shot next year.

“I’ve had a good amount of confidence going into each of my fights. I have 20 years of wrestling experience and three national championships and I came in second at the world championships. So I know people are thinking they have to avoid the take down with me. With this fight I know I have my wrestling ability but there are other things I would like to work on. One thing my coach at the Olympic Training Center used to say was, ‘You could lie to the media, you could lie to everyone else, but once you get back to your hotel the night before your fight you can’t lie to yourself.’ At this point I can look at myself and say I’m 100 percent ready for this fight.

“I think my striking is better than people think. Just because I haven’t used it doesn’t mean I don’t have it. I feel comfortable with my striking. If we have to stay standing we can stand. I don’t think anyone can stop the take down. If I want to take somebody down, they’re going down.”

CHAD GRIGGS:

“Thanks so much for having me. Obviously I’m stoked to be fighting for STRIKEFORCE. It’s an honor to fight Bobby. He’s obviously a physical specimen. It’s going to be an exciting fight and hopefully we can put on a good show.

“I think a lot of don’t know who I am and they do know Bobby. And they have high expectations for him. So I think I am being underestimated just because Bobby’s name is so much more well known. This is just a great opportunity for me.

“I do work a full-time job as a firefighter and paramedic. I’ve been doing that for 10 years, through my entire fight career. It gives me a lot of time to train, basically 20 days off a month to train. It is a juggling act. You definitely have to balance your time right. My last fight I did injure my elbow and took some time off. But I’ve been around the scene and training.

“I’m glad to hear that Bobby’s so confident. I appreciate him taking this fight and for STRIKEFORCE for putting me out there. I’m going to put it all out there.

“There are times I’m put in high-stress situations in my job. I like the pressure and the competition in fighting and it’s something I thrive on: that adrenaline rush. I think that’s going to help me; just having been put in stressful situations so many times.”

SCOTT COKER:

“When I first saw Bobby Lashley fight I thought, ‘God, this guy is an amazing fighter and a great athlete.’ He was working out with the guys at AKA (in San Jose) and he has definitely made that commitment to make a successful crossover from wrestling to MMA. With me, I always think, ‘What is Bobby going to look like 18 months from now. Or a year from now.’ With his abilities and his size and strength I really think the sky is the limit. But he has to get through Chad first on the 21st. That has to be the first thing on the top of his mind. We have five of the top heavyweights in the world now. And Bobby fits right into that. The good thing about it is if you keep winning, you will get your shot at a title. Bobby needs to just keep winning.

“Right now our focus is in North America. We have a lot of work to do here. We have a great relationship with SHOWITME. So are going to focus on building our talent here right in America.”

With regards to the middleweight division and talk of a tournament:

“We’ve talked internally about that and we thought that it would be in everybody’s best interest to crown a champion. We also thought a tournament would be a fun way to create the next challenger for the winner between Jacare (Souza) and Tim Kennedy. We thought we could do one or the other or both and it turns out we can do both. We’ll have a conversation about a tournament later down the line since that wouldn’t happen until the fall.”

Do you plan to add more weight classes in the women’s divisions?

“There is dialogue about adding a 125-pound weight class but nothing has been decided yet.”

NEW YORK, NY (August 9, 2010)—One of the most successful television executives in the world of boxing and entertainment, Jay Larkin, passed away this morning at Nyack Hospital in Nyack, NY at the age of 59. Larkin had been battling cancer.

Services will be held Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at Beth David Cemetery (300 Elmont Road) in Elmont, NY.

Larkin put together a franchise that stood atop the world of boxing and television while at SHOWTIME from 1984 to 2006 with the creation of SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING, SHOBOX: THE NEW GENERATION and a pay-per-view business that was second to none with the promotion of Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, Marvin Hagler, Sugar Ray Leonard, Julio Cesar Chavez, Felix Trinidad and many other Hall of Fame greats in the boxing world. Larkin was considered one of the most powerful professionals in the world of boxing.

Larkin was responsible for the programming, acquisition and production of the company’s boxing franchise as well as comedy and music specials for the premium television network. He worked his way up at the network to become Senior Vice President, Senior Executive Producer Sports & Event Programming at SHOWTIME.

It all began in 1986, when Larkin produced SHOWTIME’s first fight with Marvin Hagler and continued with him producing more of Mike Tyson’s fights than anyone else including a record $100,000,000 revenue night featuring Tyson-Holyfield II. He was very instrumental in the career of Evander Holyfield.

Larkin was involved in the marketing, distribution and production of many record setting and award-winning pay per view concerts featuring Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Sting, Elton John, The Rolling Stones, Frank Sinatra, Liza Minnelli, Sammy Davis Jr., Stevie Wonder, Gloria Estefan, Jay Z, The Spice Girls and the BackStreet Boys to name a few.

He also was in charge of many comedy specials and documentaries and worked with Tim Allen, Ellen DeGeneres, Jon Stewart, Drew Carey, Dennis Leary and Dave Chappelle to name a few. He was also the SHOWTIME executive in charge of the Broadway hit at the Cort Theater, “Laugh Whore” starring Mario Cantone, which received a Tony Award nomination.

Larkin was very involved in the world of professional theater and performing arts. He held bachelor’s degrees in theater and directing from C.W. Post College of Long Island University and also studied at the Boston Conservatory of Music and UCLA’s School of Theater, Film and Television.

Following his career at SHOWTIME, he joined the International Fight League as their COO in 2007-2008.

Larkin is survived by his wife, Lisa, and their two sons, Ryan and Gabriel.
