David Santos and Mike Wright of STAND UP PROMOTIONS in conjunction with former world title challengers “Sucra” Ray Oliveira and “Iceman” John Scully present a special 15 bout amateur boxing show.

Former world title challengers “Sucra” Ray Oliveira and “Iceman” John Scully met each other for the very first time in Lowell, Massachusetts 25 years ago this past February at the 1985 New England Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions. Oliveira, representing the Fall River team, was entered in the tournament as a 106 pound light flyweight while Holyoke representative Scully was a 165 pound middleweight.

Over the course of the next 25 years the two have done it all together in the boxing game, from traveling as amateur teammates to national amateur tournaments across the country, sparring against each other, fighting on pro cards together, training together (Scully briefly trained Olivera in 2004 and 2005) to being in opposite corners of boxers under their guidance.

The duo even filmed a nationally broadcast network TV boxing themed commercial together in the summer of 1987 (to benefit the United States Amateur Boxing Federation) with Avery Brooks and Robert Urich, filmed on the set of their hit TV show “Spencer For Hire.” The commercial was aired nationally numerous times including during the telecast of the following Super Bowl.

“Sucra” Olivera subsequently made his mark as a world ranked 140 pound Junior Welterweight world title challenger (lost a 12 round decision to Jake Rodrgiuez for the IBF title in 1994) while Scully fought for the IBF light heavyweight title as a 175 pound light heavyweight, losing a 12 round decision to defending champion Henry Maske in Leipzig, Germany.

Oliveira also notably made his mark in the game of boxing by throwing amazing amounts of punches that shattered “Comp-U-Box” records. Most notable was probably the 3,020 total punches he and Zack Padilla threw at each other on December 16, 1993 at Foxwoods Resort and Casino in a televised fight for the WBO 140 pound world title.

Now two of the most accomplished and well known members of the New England boxing community pair up one more time to bring you a head to head, team against team battle pitting an Oliveira led squad consisting of Southern New England based boxers versus a Scully led team representing The Lions Den Training Center in Middletown, Connecticut.

The 15 bout card will feature numerous Open, Novice and Junior Olympic boxers, including several local and regional champions. The main bout will feature a rematch in the light heavyweight division between current New England Golden Gloves 178 Pound Champion Sean Bettencourt versus Jarin Clay-Bey, son of 1996 U.S. Olympian Lawrence Clay-Bey (Bloomfield, Conn).

Clay-Bey won an upset decision over Bettencourt last month on Cape Cod.

Other boxers scheduled to be on the show include Connecticut based regional Golden Gloves champions Ryan Paris (WNEGG), and former New England Champions Christian Lau and Luis Reynoso.

Ray Oliveira Jr. is also expected to see action as is Anthonee Rivera, the 17 year old son of former WBA 154 pound world champion Jose Antonio Rivera (Worcester, Mass).

Theophane Wants To Fight Worlds Best

Cestus Management’s 140-to-147 pound world contender Ashley Theophane scored an impressive decision victory over IBF number 3 ranked welterweight Delvin Rodriguez. Theophane displayed superb boxing skills as he constantly kept Rodriguez off balance by stepping around the Dominican’s offense and landing sharp combination’s to clearly win a close action packed fight. Rodriguez, who is a former 3 time world title challenger, worked hard but in the end, Theophane just proved to be the better fighter. The fight was the main event and took place at the Buffalo Run Casino in Miami, Oklahoma and was televised live on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights.

The “Tresure” had this to say right after the fight; I’ll fight any top fighter in the world, I’m ready for any of them. I finally found myself and anyone who wants to step up and fight lets do it tomorrow. I “hit Delvin (Rodriguez) with some real hard shots and he still kept coming and never quit. I was ready to do anything to win this fight and i did. Me and my team (CESTUS) worked too hard for this and I knew I couldn’t let anyone of them down. This win is special and i can’t explain how good i feel inside. I promise whoever wants to listen that there is a lot more to come from me in the future. Like i said I’ll fight any top fighter in the world. I want a shot at a world title.”

The hard-hitting Avalos (16-0, 13 KOs), of Lancaster, Calif., by way of San Diego, will face fellow unbeaten Martin (18-0-2, 5 KOs), of Chula Vista, Calif., in the 10-round ShoBox: The New Generation main event THIS Friday, LIVE on SHOWTIME® (11 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast).

Martin was two pounds the contracted weight limit, however both fighters agreed to continue with the scheduled 10-rounder. Martin was fined by Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe Commission for missing weight.

Undefeated, hard-hitting cruiserweight Lateef “Power’’ Kayode, a pupil of Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach, weighed in at 198 ½ pounds and Alfredo Escalera, Jr., tipped the scales at 199 pounds. The two will face off in the eight-round cruiserweight co-feature at Grand Casino Hinckley, in Hinckley, Minn. The doubleheader is promoted by Gary Shaw Productions, LLC.

Avalos has been steadily ascending through the ranks and is currently rated No. 5 by the World Boxing Organization (WBO) and No 11 by the World Boxing Association (WBA). He’ll face one of his toughest tests to date in Martin, a slick boxer who has won eight in a row.

Kayode (12-0, 11 KOs), of Nigeria, will seek his 12th consecutive knockout when he makes his ShoBox debut against Puerto Rico’s Escalera, Jr., 18-2-1, 12 KOs), the son and namesake of the former world champion.

Azevedo shoots back at McKee; Brazilian contender vows to retire reigning MFC champ at Retribution

There’s little doubt that Luciano Azevedo will give reigning lightweight champ Antonio McKee a stiff challenge when they meet at MFC 26: Retribution.

But Azevedo has proven to be a worthy contender when it comes to meeting McKee head-on in a war of words as well. Given the chance to fire back at the verbose McKee, Azevedo armed himself with the biggest gun he could get his hands on and took aim at the belt-holding veteran.

Told that McKee planned to bring a blanket to the ring and tuck him in after a devastating knockout, Azevedo delivered his first strike.

“I’ll have 25 minutes to answer everything he’s said about me face to face. However what I’ve got to say won’t take that much time. It’ll be a quick chat,” said the Brazilian, who meets McKee on Friday, Sept. 10 in Westman Place at the Keystone Centre in Brandon, Manitoba.

Knowing that McKee vowed to wrap up his career and leave his gloves in the ring if Azevedo took him the full five rounds, the 29-year-old declared his own intentions – a second shot across the bow.

“Tell McKee I’m waiting for him … and I want his gloves!” offered Azevedo. “As a fighter it’s obvious he must be respected. He’s been undefeated for seven years and holds the MFC belt. But he’s really crazy and needs to retire. Old men have lapses of memory all the time. It’s not his fault.”

While Azevedo comes in eyeing the belt, the young gun figured the pressure is much heavier on the champ thanks to his brash statements – a third direct hit.

“My responsibility is to beat him with all my strengths,” explained the Sao Paulo native who now fights out of Rio de Janeiro. “Because of what he has said his responsibility is to beat me plus get the knockout or the submission because if it goes to a decision he’s going to retire. Do you know what kind of weight that is on him?

“The guy is a veteran who plays like a rookie. He’s added more and more pressure on his own back. Now he’s got a heavy boulder to carry because each minute that goes by and he hasn’t reached his goal of finishing the fight it becomes more of a concern for him.

“My answer for everything he has said will be in the ring. I’m going to fight and then I’m going to celebrate with my new belt.”

Azevedo has shown no problem stepping into the limelight of big fights before. He holds a career victory over veteran Din Thomas but only eight months before that encounter, he earned a win over Jose Aldo. To this day Azevedo is the only man to ever defeat Aldo, a clear-cut listed member of best pound-for-pound fighters in the world today.

That feat serves as a massive confidence builder as Azevedo sets his sights on taking McKee’s championship belt and putting a sudden halt to his lengthy winning streak.

“The Aldo fight was eighth fight for both of us,” recalled Azevedo. “I remember people talking about the way he crushed guys in his prior seven fights and that my destiny would be the same. The insiders didn’t believe I could submit him even though I had beaten Brazilian black belts. All the odds were against me, but I was very well trained and I won (rear-naked choke in the second round). He even came in overweight and I still accepted the fight despite the disadvantage.”

Despite a solid career fighting all over the world, this will truly be Azevedo’s coming out party. In his first fight on North American soil, he gets a title shot live on international television.

“I started training at 10 years old in the same neighborhood I live in today. The outcome of my hard work is going to be rewarded again coming to the MFC and getting a title shot.

“I’ve never stopped training and I’ve only improved. I’d like to tell the fans that I’ll make the show worth watching. They’ll see a great fight. I’m going to show that my stand-up skills are sharp and I want to get a knockout.”

Powerhouse Concept for Boxing Pay-Per-View

So you’re Juan Manuel Marquez, you just beat Juan Diaz again in rematch, but your right eye is swollen so big you can put “Good Year” on it and you want to fight a rematch with the man who has had the most incredible rise in weight and success in boxing history, Manny Pacquiao? Does the World want to see this again? Absolutely not. The world wants to see Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr. and will pay dearly to view it. So what is the problem?

Follow me on this, Manny is with Bob Arum, who is not Golden with Golden Boy who is the promoter of the moment for Floyd Mayweather Jr, who’s uncle/trainer might be going to jail, while Congressman Pacquiao who has to pay for his election will gladly submit to drug testing as Pretty Boy Floyd wanted, who himself has to pay some back taxes to pay, so the entire US Congress can spend it. So why won’t the bell ring for this fight?

The only people leaving more money on the table are BP and their one time leaky well in the bottom of the Gulf. You can’t recover oil in water anymore than you can recover your youth. It’s time for Michael Buffer to do his rumble thing or Jimmy Lennon to do his “It’s Showtime” or referee Mills Lane to say “Let’s get it on.” Ah, there you have it Mills Lane is no longer refereeing, Pacquiao is now 31 and Mayweather is 33 and whereas neither fighter has ever been hurt in the ring, age is creeping up on them.

Now this is where MMA and the UFC really gave fans a new alternative. The UFC shows depend on pay per view buys so they are going to match up the fighters that people will pay to see. After seeing Juan Manuel Marquez get his own urine he drank knocked out of him by Mayweather, why would you want to see Pacquiao fight Marquez again?

Why would you want to see Pacquiao fight another Top Rank cast member, Antonio Margarito? Cast, is right, Margarito was going to fight a Golden Boy fighter, Shane Mosley with wraps that were going to turn his hands into casts and thus got suspended and is still suspended in the USA. Bob Arum who promotes both Pacquiao and Margarito is going to make this fight a reality and offer it to you on pay per view.

The UFC was a beautiful concept as all the top fighters fought each other and the great leader of the UFC, Dana White did not really care who won, he cared instead about pay per view buys. Names like Randy Couture, Tito Ortiz, Chuck Liddell, Tim Sylvia, Wanderlei Silva, Brock Lesnar etc, became stars. Meanwhile from the Eastern Part of the world came a Sambo Master named The Emperor Fedor Emelianenko who beat the world and had Russian Premier Vladimir Putin as his buddy.

Ok so that’s where the UFC failed in pitting the best against the best in the world for the pay per view crowd to see. Fedor had his own promotional company and UFC is not in the business of co promoting. So, yes, one time UFC Heavyweight Champions Tim Sylvia and Andrei Arlovski did fight Fedor, but only after both had left the UFC.

The world wanted to see Lesnar and Fedor but no co- promotions, so no fight. Fedor has since been beaten by Brazilian Jiu Jitsu expert Fabricio Werdum, but the world still wants to see Fedor and Brock, so why won’t the bell ring for this fight?

Along come two guys from San Diego who have been in the fight business for some time, one a Grand Master in Karate, the other a boxing and MMA trainer. The Karate guy is Brian Manna and the boxing and MMA trainer is Tony Martinez. They enlist the help of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu master, Joe Moreira, bring in some boxing hall of fame guys named Carlos Palomino and Rodolfo “Gato” Gonzalez, while adding a due diligence guy named Burdett Streeter who’s words can add more submission holds on a contract than a Brazilian can create.

This group decides to call themselves, Powerhouse World Promotions and they want to bring in the best fighters in the world, be it MMA or Boxing and let them fight each other.

So they are made aware of and contact Doug Jacobs at Integrated Sports and talk their way into having an industry leader in the pay per view business as its partner.

The event is on and Brian Manna decides to call their first event “War on the Mainland”. Faster than you can spell Schwarzenegger, Brian gets his promoter’s license and Tony Martinez gets a matchmaker’s license in the state of California. Just like that you have a Mega fighting event on August 14th on pay per view television in the US and streamed on the internet to the rest of the world from the Bren Events Center in Irvine, California.

Brian and Tony get two guys who should of fought before, Tim Sylvia and Paul Buentello, to fight in the main event, they get legendary MMA fighter Jens Pulver on the card as well as Jason Lambert and Allan Goes to fight each other. Thales Leite and a guy known as the Fighting Hippy, Matt Horwich fight each other and all of them are fighting for a Powerhouse World Promotions title. The undercard of the War on the Planet is stacked deeper than the New York Jet’s Super Bowl expectations.

Now get this, Powerhouse World Promotions does not care who wins their titles, all they know is that their next event will again be on pay per view television and on the internet and they are going to have the world do the matchmaking. Yes, the world picks the fighters they want to see fight each other, Tony Martinez has to go get them, Brian Manna has to decide what to pay them, Joe Moreira serves as counselor and interpreter and Burdett draws up the arm bar submission worded contracts to be signed and it welcomes co promoters.

No more ESPN Friday night fights where you know the red corner is going to win as they can’t afford a loss for the fighter who is owned by the promoters of the fight.

Not these Powerhouse World Promotion guys, they don’t want to own fighters anymore than they want to own Paula Abdul’s contract and have Paula Abdul go Paula Abdul on them.

Can you imagine seeing videos of a guy in Siberia knocking holes in ice blocks with his fists, while a guy in Liberia is knocking over palm trees with left and right combinations? You want to see them fight? Tell Powerhouse World Promotions and they will get the fighters to fight while the only guarantee they offer the fighter is a payday and a roundtrip ticket back to Siberia or Liberia. Pay per view, you’re paying so you pick ‘em.

Undefeated Prospect Lennox Allen Makes New Home Debut in Brooklyn

NEW YORK (Aug. 5, 2010) – Undefeated super middleweight prospect Lennox “2 Sharpe” Allen, a native of Guyana, makes his “new” home debut Saturday night (Aug. 7) at the Aviator Sports Arena in Brooklyn, New York.

Allen (12-0, 7 KOs) is a much traveled, 25-year-old now living in Brooklyn. The aggressive southpaw faces his stiffest test to date, veteran Darnell Boone (17-15-2, 7 KOs), in an 8-round bout on Saturday’s card in Brooklyn, presented by HAVOC Boxing Promotions.

Allen is coming off of a sixth-round stoppage of Victor Paz last month. Boone, who has been stopped only once in his career, is somewhat of a super middleweight gatekeeper having extended world champions Andre Ward and Jean Pascal the full distance. In his last bout, Boone upset previously unbeaten Adonis Stevenson (13-0) via a second-round technical knockout.

Allen’s promoter, Boxing 360, has a full weekend of boxing. In addition to having Allen fighting Boone in New York on Saturday night, Boxing 360 heavyweights “Merciless” Mike Mollo and Maurice “Moe Sugar” Harris will be fighting Friday evening, respectively, in Chicago and Hinkley, Minnesota. Mollo (20-3, 12 KOs) returns home for an 8-round bout against Gary “Pit Bull” Gomez (18-11-1, 7 KOs) at the UIC Pavilion Center. Harris (23-14-2, 10 KOs), winner of the 2002 “Thunderbox Heavyweight Tournament,” takes on IBF #15 rated Nagy “Dominican Dynamite” Aguilera (16-3, 11 KOs) for the vacant USBA title, in Hinkley, Minnesota.
