Fedor “The Last Emperor” Emelianenko, the world’s No. 1 pound for pound fighter, will take on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and top-ranked heavyweight Fabricio Werdum in the main event. The No. 1 female fighter, Cris Cyborg, will defend her STRIKEFORCE Women’s World 145-pounds Championship against Jan Finney in the semi-main.
In other televised action on SHOWTIME: Scott “Hands Of Steel’’ Smith and Cung Le are rematched at 185 pounds and exciting former STRIKEFORCE lightweight champion Josh Thomson will be opposed by veteran submission specialist Pat “Bam Bam’’ Healy.

Los Angeles, CA (June 24, 2010) – When capturing the WBA Light Heavyweight Championship in just his 10th professional bout back in January, Beibut Shumenov (9-1, 6 KOs) entered the boxing record books for winning a major world title in the light heavyweight division with the fewest number of fights in his professional career, beating Jeff Harding’s record established in 1988 after winning the championship in his 15th professional bout.
On July 23rd, the Chimkent, Kazakhstan-born, Las Vegas, NV-based warrior, who recently signed with Goossen Tutor Promotions, will get his next chance at making history when he defends his WBA and IBA titles in only his 11th professional bout against mandatory challenger Vyacheslav Uzelkov (22-0, 14 KOs) of Vinitza, Ukraine, in the scheduled 12-round main event of the ESPN2 “Friday Night Fights” (10pm ET/7pm PT).
Presented by Goossen Tutor in association with KZ Event Productions, the Shumenov-Uzelkov headlined boxing card will emanate from a specially constructed outdoor arena at the Tachi Palace Hotel & Casino in Lemoore, CA.
The Kevin Barry-trained, self- managed Shumenov, 26, avenged his only loss as a pro – by majority decision — in winning the WBA Light Heavyweight Championship from Gabriel Campillo in another 12-round hotly-contested bout — in just his 10th fight.
On May 8th in Carson, CA, Shumenov was introduced at a press conference announcing the signing with Goossen Tutor, which will allow him to be more focused for his own boxing career, starting with the defense against Uzelkov. As co-owner — with brother Chingis — of KZ Event Productions, Beibut Shumenov will continue to be heavily involved in signing and guiding the careers of boxers under the KZ umbrella.
The mental toll on a fighter who is actually fighting and promoting simultaneously can be, and usually is, horrific. Now with the burden of the day-in, day-out promotional responsibilities now resting on Goossen Tutor’s shoulders, Shumenov, for the first time in his career will truly be able to concentrate on the formable task immediately in front of him; WBA mandatory challenger Uzelkov.
“I’ve been able to concentrate 100-percent on training for the first time in my career with the alignment with Goossen Tutor,” Shumenov said. “I’ve been training hard with Kevin just focusing on improving all aspects of my arsenal, and everyone will see that against Uzelkov. He is a good fighter who deserves his championship opportunity and I know it’s going to be a great fight. I can’t wait for July 23rd. It’s going to be a night of firsts for me – first WBA title defense; first time fighting on ESPN; and first fight without having to worry about promoting.”
The undefeated, heavy-handed Uzelkov, 31, has been taken the distance just once in his last 10 bouts. In his most recent outing back in October, he stopped the Czech Republic’s Tomas Adamek in the fifth round to win the WBA Inter-Continental Championship in Kiev, Ukraine. Uzelkov owns a knockout win over Gabriel Campillo – the only common opponent he has with Shumenov. Uzelkov is promoted by brothers Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko, who head up K2 Promotions Ukraine.
“It is necessary to knock him (Shumenov) out so there are no questions, and as a matter of fact, that is exactly what I plan to do,” Uzelkov said. Shumenov had the title for a little while and now it will transfer over to me.”
Promoter Dan Goossen said he couldn’t have picked a tougher fight for his new champion then Uzelkov. “These are the type of challenges that definitely take you to the next level with a victory. It won’t be easy on July 23, but we believe Beibut is destined to do special things in boxing.”
A victory for Shumenov puts him into position to unify the light heavyweight belts against the other champions: Tavoris Cloud (IBF), Jean Pascal (WBC) and Juergen Braehmer (WBO). But the one real challenge Shumenov would like is against undefeated Chad Dawson.
First things first though as Shumenov can only think about taking care of the very dangerous and hungry challenger on July 23.
In addition to the main event bout, Rico Ramos (16-0, 9 KOs), the #3 WBO world rated Super Bantamweight will defend his WBO/NABO championship against Mexico’s hard-punching Cuauhtemoc Vargas (15-3-1, 10 KOs) in an eight-round fight. With a win, Ramos will be one step closer to his goal of fighting for the world championship.

Benn and Collins complete Prizefighter draw

Legends set up June 30 Super Middleweight clashes
Nigel Benn and Steve Collins performed the Prizefighter Super Middleweights draw at the Covent Garden Hotel in London ahead of the June 30 event on Sky Sports.
Patrick Mendy makes Prizefighter history as the youngest boxer to take part in the show, and he kicks-off the night against Dudley’s Sam Horton, a fighter full of confidence after a positive showing against James DeGale for the WBA International super middleweight title.
The winner of that fight will face a semi-final against either Waltham Abbey’s Daniel Cadman and Birmingham’s Eddie McIntosh in the second quarter-final.
The third quarter-final pits unbeaten Welshman Jeff Evans against Sheffield’s Peter Fedorenko, fighting for just the second time since almost a decade out of the ring. The winner of that fight faces the victor of the final quarter-final, where public vote winner Tony Salam from Stoke Newington takes on English super middleweight champion Paul David from Northampton.
The legendary duo, whom both held the world super middleweight title in their illustrious careers and locked horns in two colossal title fights in the mid-90s, and both men were full of praise for Barry Hearn’s eight-man, one night tournament.
“It’s a terrific format and it’s breathed new life into boxing,” said Benn. “Three threes? That would’ve been great for me, get it over quickly – that’s right up my street, you don’t want to be holding anything back it’s guns blazing from the beginning to the end. You can’t leave anything in the tank.”
Irishman Collins echoed Benn’s sentiments and was in no doubt as to the importance of the event in British boxing today.
“It springboards them into stardom,” said the Irishman. “It’s a lot of risk but it’s a shortcut to fame. It’s a great concept; the whole idea is terrific with fans watching eight contenders put it all on the line to become a champion in the space of a couple of hours. The winner then becomes a recognised name, his career goes up and he gets new people coming to his fights. There is nothing about it that’s negative – the whole thing is a positive for boxing and it would’ve been great had it been around when I was fighting as there were a lot of good boxers who never got the chance to show what they can do.
“It’s a lot of pressure all on one night – you make one mistake and you are out,” said Collins. “People say it’s like an amateur fight but it’s not at all, you have to squeeze an awful lot into those three round and in the professional game over 10-12 rounds you have time to make mistakes and you can still come back from behind.
“When I fought I knew the fighter I was up against” said Collins. “If he was a tall guy, I’d have sparring partners who were tall and so on, but on one night you can have a southpaw, a short guy, a fast guy, a tall guy, the only way to prepare for this is to get as much unorthodox and unpredictable sparring as you can and try to squeeze as many different things into your preparation as possible. Me? I’d have won it! You cannot anticipate what is coming your way, so you have to get fit and expect the unexpected.”

TUA TRAINING IN U.S. FOR UPCOMING JULY 17TH ATLANTIC CITY PPV SHOW

World-rated heavyweight contender David Tua (51-3-1, 43KO’s), is currently in the U.S. training for his upcoming fight against Monte Barrett (34-9, 20KO’s) at the Tropicana Casino and Resort in Atlantic City, NJ on Saturday July 17th. The WBO #2 rated Tua has set himself up in camp in nearby Jersey City, NJ with long-time trainer Roger Bloodworth. This will be Tua’s third fight overall, but first in the U.S. since making his return to the ring in October of last year after a two-year hiatus.
“It is great coming back to fight in the states. I’m back to the place where it all started for me,” stated Tua. “My fans here are just as passionate as they are at home. On Sunday the 25th July some of the biggest names in British Boxing, along with stars from TV, Film and Music, will be gathering at the Brockwell Stadium in Canvey Island to participate in a football tournament to raise funds for The Indee Rose Trust, which provide support to children recovering from brain and spinal tumors.
The tournament, which is organised by renowned professional boxing coaches Johnny Eames and Derek Grainger of the Ultrachem TKO Gym in Canning Town, will include teams headed by WBA Heavyweight World Champion DAVID ‘HAYEMAKER’ HAYE, former undisputed Light Welterweight King RICKY HATTON, WBU Lightweight World Champion WILLIE LIMOND, European Champion DARREN BARKER, British & Commonwealth Super Featherweight Champ KEVIN MITCHELL, British Super Middleweight Champion PAUL SMITH and Commonwealth Champions RICKY BURNS & TONY BELLEW.
Joining the aforementioned professional boxing champions will be Olympic Gold Medallist JAMES DEGALE, World Amateur Champion FRANKIE GAVIN and Olympian BILLY JOE SAUNDERS.

Johnny Eames said, “First of all I want to say what a great honour it is to be associated with The Indee Rose Trust. It’s a trust that’s run by the two parents that tragically lost their three year old girl to a brain tumor. Unbearable thing to think about really. They have set up this trust fund to raise valuable cash to help children under the age of eighteen who are recovering from brain and spinal tumors.
We’re privileged to put the Ultrachem TKO Gym name to the trust and we are, hopefully, going to put on a yearly football tournament to raise funds for the trust. The response, for the first tournament on the 25th July, has been fantastic. So many boxing stars, journalists and stars from music and television have pledged their support.
It started as an idea, that grew, and thanks to these great people looks like it’s going to be a great event with ten star packed teams taking part.
I would also like to thank Canvey Island Football Club who have, not only loaned us their stadium for the 25th July tournament, but today I read have said that The Indee Rose Trust is to be their chosen charity for the coming season. Which is fantastic, and I would love to see our efforts bring more people to make it their chosen charity for this year. It’s not our charity for just this year though. COLLINS AND BENN TO PERFORM PRIZEFIGHTER DRAW

Former world champions to decide fate of June 30 fighters
Old rivals Nigel Benn and Steve Collins will perform the draw for Prizefighter Super Middleweights on Sky Sports News on Thursday evening ahead of the event live on Sky Sports on June 30 at York Hall, Bethnal Green.
It’s the 13th outing for Barry Hearn’s eight-man, one night tournament and who better to perform the draw than the two great rivals who both held the world super middleweight title – with the quarter-final line-up they pull out of the bag being revealed on Sky Sports News after 8pm.
Prizefighter history on the night comes in the shape of Patrick Mendy who at 19 becomes the youngest boxer to fight in the event, while Stoke Newington’s Tony Salam took the final place on the night after winning the first public vote at www.Prizefighter.co.uk.
Dudley’s Sam Horton recently fought James DeGale live on Sky Sports, while Northampton’s Sheffield-based fighter Paul David holds the English super middleweight title. Sheffield’s Peter Fedorenko continues his return to the ring after nearly a decade out of the ring, unbeaten Welshman Jeff Evans a dangerous name in the hat, with Waltham Abbey’s Daniel Cadman and Eddie McIntosh completing the line-up battling for the £32,000 winner’s cheque.
