JUNE 24th, 2010, RENO – As part of the Jack Johnson vs. Jim Jeffries centenary in Reno, Top Rank Incorporated, the Grand Sierra Resort, and Let’s Get It On Promotions present an evening of professional boxing.

Added to the stellar boxing card is an eight round super-middleweight bout between Reno’s own Joey Gilbert (19-2, 15 KOs) and Bakersfield CA’s Billy “The Billy Goat” Bailey (10-8, 4 KOs).

Gilbert, who displayed that he is still a contender by stopping the tough Anthony Bartinelli on May 22nd, is looking to extend his win streak to three in a special attraction bout.

“I felt great against Stovall in August, and Bartinelli in May.” Says Gilbert. “It feels great to be fighting regularly again. I’m back.”

In Bailey’s last two fights, he has been on the wrong end of extremely controversial decisions. He has only been stopped one time in his career. Bailey is known for being an aggressive and durable foe who many fighters avoid.

“Lightning” Lonnie Smith added to card

“Fight of the night” winner of Reno Xtreme Fights IV, El Negro Mexicano “Lightning” Lonnie Smith (10-2-2, 7KOs) has been added to the July 3rd card as well. Smith, who’s fight with Randy Arrellin had the fans at the Grand Sierra Resort on their feet, is coming off of an impressive 5th round TKO.

Firtha planning to upset Grano Saturday night in ‘Pride & Power’ in headliner Bout of CES show at Mohegan Sun Arena

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (June 23, 2010) – Ohio heavyweight Nicolai “Stone Man” Firtha has made multiple visits to New England visiting relatives, but this Saturday night he’ll make his first business trip there, challenging Hartford heavyweight favorite Tony “TNT” Grano in the 10-round main event on the “Pride & Power” boxing show, presented by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc. (CES), at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.

“I’m looking forward to fighting in New England for the first time,” Firtha said. “I have a lot of family there and hope that they’ll be supporting me at the fight. I’m humbled by this opportunity because I’m not with a big promoter and it is tough getting good fights like this. I’m hoping to be discovered. I only had a 2 ½-week notice – I was carrying my golf clubs – but I stay in good shape and ready for a call like we received.

“Styles make fights; I’m a classic boxer-puncher, he’s a classic slugger. The key for me is keeping him on the outside, boxing, and keeping my back off of the ropes. I want the action in the center of the ring. If I’m on the ropes, I lose. At some point in the fight, though, it’s going to be go-time, and I won’t go back.”

Firtha (17-7-1, 7 KOs) and Grano (17-1-1, 13 KOs), whose four-round knockout of previously undefeated Travis Kaufman last September on Showtime was named The Ring magazine’s 2009 Heavyweight Fight of the Year, will battle for the vacant NABA-US title.

“Nick is 6’ 6” and 245 pounds,” Firtha’s manager Pat Nelson added. “You’d never know he’s a fighter by the way he speaks and he looks like Kurt Warner. He’s a Klitschko prototype. It’s going to be a super competitive fight. I feel Nick possess more size and power, as well as more skill in the ring, than Grano. We’re anxious for the fight and hope that a big win will propel Firtha into the WBA world ratings.”

Hartford super bantamweight Mike “Machine Gun” Oliver (23-2, 8 KOs), the reigning New England and EBA champion, will be in a crossroads fight to continue his journey back to the top of the 122-pound division, taking on 4-time world title-holder Mauricio “Indio Boy” Pastrana (35-13-2, 23 KOs) in the 8-round co-feature.

Long Island light heavyweight Joe “The Irish Bomber” Smith Jr. (4-0, 4 KOs), the 2008 New York Golden Gloves Champion, goes for his fifth consecutive first-round knockout in his fifth pro fight against Walter Foster (4-2-1, 4 KOs) of Panama City, Panama.

CES Ring of Honor Induction – Jamie Silva

One of New England’s best football players, Jamie Silva, will be inducted into the CES Ring of Honor as an honorary member. Silva was the 2002 Rhode Island Player of the Year and he earned first team, All-America honors in 2007 as a safety at Boston College. He is a member of the defending American Football Conference champion Indianapolis Colts.

“I didn’t make any excuses after the last fight with Gilbert, but ring rust is real. I didn’t get it gone, and Gilbert looked very good but I know why I lost and that is because I didn’t listen to my corner.

“On Saturday, the plan will be, like always, to get off first and dictate the pace. The plan against Gilbert was not to make it a brawl but that is what happened,

“I feel I’ve learned from that fight so expect a different Josh Thomson on Saturday than the one you saw against Gilbert.

Mentally progressing, ZUMA product now focused on physical improvement

Gavin Neil would have to be considered among the MFC’s most promising prospects, having already amassed a solid 8-1 record over the course of his career.

There’s still plenty of work to do, yet the Victoria, British Columbia, native has taken an important step in the process of becoming a real contender.

“I think he’s turned a mental corner,” noted trainer Adam Zugec of his ZUMA product who is known to many MFC fans as “Forrest” for his Gump-like demeanor.

“Honestly, I’ve been waiting forever for it to come. He’s become a real different person in the gym because he’s really started to believe in himself … there’s just so much more self-confidence. I’m excited to see how it’s going to affect him because I think he could be very dangerous.”

As soft-spoken and unassuming as he is, Neil certainly did prove to be dangerous against veteran Richie Hightower at MFC 25 back in May. A crushing left hook floored Hightower and Neil pounced, ultimately forcing Hightower to tap just moments later under the weight of a rear-naked choke. It was Neil’s sixth win in seven fights under the MFC banner and moved him a step closer to the upper echelon of the MFC’s 155-pound division.

Having already proven himself against a wave of up-and-comers – wins over Alain Hernandez, Evan Sanguin, and Jason Zorthian all coming inside the first round – the victory over Hightower showed Neil is ready for more seasoned opposition. That is all part of Zugec’s grand game plan for his likeable lightweight.

“He’s really gained a lot of confidence off that last fight and now I think he’s really found a groove,” said Zugec.

With that mental corner turned, the next curve to negotiate is a physical one.

“I need to get him a tanning salon sponsor,” laughed Zugec. “He does need to put on some muscle so we’re going to build on his frame. Gavin wants to fight three times a year and now we’ll just wait to see who the next fight is going to be against. But we’ll be ready and Gavin is going to take another big step.”

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (June 22, 2010) – Hartford super bantamweight Mike “Machine Gun” Oliver, the reigning New England and EBA champion, will be in a crossroads fight Saturday night as he continues his journey back to the top of the 122-pound division, taking on 4-time world title-holder Mauricio “Indio Boy” Pastrana in the 8-round co-feature on the “Pride & Power” boxing show, presented by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc. (CES), at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.

Hartford heavyweight prospect Tony “TNT” Grano (17-1-1, 13 KOs), the reigning WBF All-Americas heavyweight champion, faces former U.S. amateur standout Nicolai “Stone Man” Firtha (17-7-1, 7 KOs) for the vacant NABA-US heavyweight title in the 12-round main event.

The Ring magazine recently named Grano’s sensational victory by fourth-round knockout last September on Showtime against previously undefeated Travis Kaufman (18-0) as its 2009 Heavyweight Fight of the Year.

Oliver (23-2, 8 KOs), an outstanding amateur who started boxing when he was only two, won his first 21 pro fights, including the IBO super bantamweight title in 2007 with a 12-round decision against Al Seeger (27-2). During the aforementioned win streak, Mike defeated Adam Carrera (18-1) for the USBA strap and handed Gary Stark Jr. (18-0) his first loss by way of a 12-round decision.

Back-to-back losses in 2008 to Reynaldo Lopez and Antonio Escalante, however, knocked Oliver out of the rankings and into a semi-boxing abyss. Oliver has won his last two fights, along with a no decision, since suffering his last loss.

“Any fight at this stage – I don’t care who it’s against – is the most important fight of my career,” Oliver said. “I need to take every fight serious to get me back to where I was before. I want to fight for another title and a win Saturday night will get me closer. Pastrana stays right in front of you and I like that. If he wants to go toe-to-toe, it’s going to be wrong for him. I’ll be fully prepared for him. I’m only 30 and I was born to fight.”

Pastrana (35-13-2, 23 KOs) has been a world title holder in five different weight classes (light flyweight, flyweight, super flyweight, bantamweight and super bantamweight) and he also holds a win against one of only two fighters to defeat Oliver – Escalante. Among others, Pastrana’s victims include Michael Carbajal, Jose Bonilla and Mike Trejo.

“This fight was supposed to happen about three times,” Pastrana commented from his camp in Florida. “Now that I’ve lost three in a row, I guess they must figure I’m done, but lately I’ve taken a lot of last-minute fights and [had] some bad luck. I’m excited because Oliver is perfect for me. Usually, I’m the smaller guy (they’re both listed at 5’ 5”). I know he needs this fight but I have to win, too.”
