The excitement is here again as Ultimate Challenge presents another cracking event on June 19th with UCMMA: 13 Feel The Pain. With a line up set to tingle your taste buds, have you on the edge of your seat and much more here’s a tatse of the exciting matches in store for you…

Battling it out for the Heavyweight’s is Darren Towler (Team Machine) – the new golden boy from the North who’s taking on the formidable form of Ben Smith (Team Titan) in what will be a jaw clenching match. Smith is fairly new to MMA as a pro but don’t be deceived, he holds both the UCMMA British Heavyweight Super Fight champion and the UCMMA Heavyweight grand-prix champion titles and won every one of his fights last year. Towler has been training hard and is going to prove no walk in the park for Smith.

In the Middleweights, Chris Greig will tough it out with Jack Mason. Mason – banker by day, fighter by night – will be looking to pull back his performance having lost his last fight to Mark ‘The Wizard’ Weir but given his strong track record, there’s no doubt he’ll be giving Greig a run for his money. Greig won his last two fights and will be chomping at the bit to make it a third victory. We shall see.

Jason Ball and Tim Radcliffe will take on each other’s might in the Lightweight fight of the night. Ultimate Challenge is proud to host the internationally acclaimed Ball, for the first time or, as he’s better known, “Daddy Cool”. Tim Radcliffe will be aiming for a swift finish hoping to repeat the performance that won him the Ultimate Challenge Lightweight belt. The winner will face Pastou in September .

In another Heavyweight MMA binge, Oli Thompson will be battling it out against Ian “Monsta” Hawkins. Having qualified for “Britain’s Strongest Man” we’re expecting this fight to be a bitter one but Oli knows that once the cage door closes, past performances are history. With Hawkins, like Thompson being more suited to heavy-hitting than graceful moves, it won’t be long before the two will be landing thundering blows on each other.

Also on the card – UCMMA’s own, Harry Shoebridge challenged by Kai Senkan, Tony Pasos in another Middleweight fight, Scott Jansen, Djo Lema and Ashly Pollard vs ‘the Doctor’ in a UK-1 heavy weight title clash.

Teenager Mendy to make Prizefighter history

Confident Maidenhead fighter to become youngest competitor ever

Patrick Mendy will become the youngest fighter in Prizefighter history when he boxes in the super-middleweights event on June 30 at York Hall, Bethnal Green – the start of a journey he says will take him to a world title.

The 19 year-old from Maidenhead has been tipped for big things and got the call up for the latest of Barry Hearn’s eight-man, one night tournaments live on Sky Sports as he travelled to spar with European, British and Commonwealth title winner Nathan Cleverly – great preparation for the hotly-tipped teenager.

“I was on my way [to Wales] when I got the call and I’m so excited to get into Prizefighter and believe me, I am the best fighter in the line-up,” said Mendy, known as ‘The Tiger’. “I train right all the time in the gym and I’m working even harder to be at my peak in two weeks time. I’ve done speed work every day since getting that call and it’s going really well.

“It’s going to be a great night, the biggest of my career so far and I am very confident that I will win,” said the Maidenhead man. “My fights on the night are going to be explosive and the fans will love it, it will be the best night of boxing they will have ever seen because I’m in the ring.”

Mendy has nine fights under his belt since turning pro with five wins and four losses, all on points, including a defeat to great Scottish 2006 Commonwealth gold medallist Kenny Anderson in his last outing in March – but he claims that his record does not reflect his performances in all his fights, and that he could have easily been going into the night unbeaten.

“My record says four defeats but if you saw the fights you would say I won,” said Mendy. “I took the fight against Anderson with three days notice and anyone there would say that I won that fight so my record means little.

“It is great for Maidenhead that I am fighting in Prizefighter,” he added. “I do a lot of work in the community with kids, getting them off the streets and into the gym learning. It’s really important to me and I’m fighting for them and for the area at York Hall.”

Mendy’s path to the top is being led by experienced manager Jim Evans, who is confident he has one of the next big things on his hands and compared him at his age to former Amateur star Errol Christie – and says he has the added element to take him all the way.

“He’s the best 19 year-old I’ve seen since Errol,” said Evans. “The thing about Patrick is he has that little bit of arrogance that all top athletes have to have. I’ve got 30 fighters and he walks with all of them – he spars with Michael Sprott and handles him well and I’m certain he’ll come out on top at Prizefighter.”

With a winner’s cheque of £32,000 up for grabs, the financial gains are vast, but Mendy is focused on making this first step to the peak of boxing.

“I live for boxing and my mission is clear – to become a World Champion and I will achieve it, and that journey can start at Prizefighter,” said Mendy.

CES’ “Let Freedom Ring” show July 9 at Twin River Event Center, RI

PROVIDENCE (June 15, 2010) – Red-hot lightweight prospect “Hammerin’” Hank Lundy, rated No. 13 by the World Boxing Association, makes his first title defense against challenger John John “The Hammer” Molina (20-1, 16 KOs) in the 12-round main event July 9 on “Let Freedom Ring,” presented live on ESPN Friday Night Fights by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc. (CES), at Twin River Event Center in Lincoln, R.I.

The always entertaining, fan-favorite Lundy (18-0-1, 10 KOs), fighting out of Philadelphia, has made the Providence area his second home with this being his fifth fight in that market. The 26-year-old has defeated Tyrese Hendrix (18-0-1), Richard Abril (12-1-1), Jason Cintron (10-0), Esteban Alveraz (7-0) and fought Darnell Giles, Jr. (8-0) to a controversial draw.

“I’m ready to go and I think my first ESPN main event is overdue,” Lundy commented. “It feels real good. I’ve fought on ESPN three or four times. They liked what they saw and that’s why I’m back fighting on national television, but this time I’m in the main event. I put on a show for fans every time I’m in the ring.”

The NABO No. 9 rated Molina will be fighting east of the Mississippi River for the first time when he steps into the ring. He has beaten Efren Hinojosa (30-6-1), Frankie Achuleta (25-6-1) and Fernando Omar Lizarraga (16-1-1).

“He doesn’t impress me, not one bit,” the often outspoken Lundy said about his opponent. “He hasn’t fought the quality of opponent like me. Molina’s credentials are fraudulent. He has a beefed-up record. I can box but, most of the time, I just go in and blast away. Fans are going to see better boxing skills from me in this fight. John Molina is done. He may be 5-10 but he gives-up his height. He’s dumb.

“This nationally televised fight is going to prove I’m the top lightweight prospect in boxing. I’m going to be looking to get him out of there and, if it goes the distance, he’s going to get a real butt whooping. I’m ‘Hammerin’ Hank, he calls himself ‘The Hammer.’ I’m the real ‘Hammer’ and when I hit him with my hammer, he’s going to sleep.”

New England and EBA super middleweight champion “Irish” Joey McCreedy (11-4-2, 6 KOs), trained by “Irish” Micky Ward and fighting out of Lowell (MA), makes his middleweight debut in the 8-round co-feature against an opponent to be determined.

In a rare battle of college graduates, undefeated Cape Verdean boxer Vladine Biosse (6-0, 4 KOs), a former University of Rhode Island football player living in Providence, steps-up in class Quincy (MA) light heavyweight Chris Traietti (8-2, 5 KOs), an Iraq War veteran, in the 6-round ESPN swing bout.

Quincy (MA) welterweight Aleksandra Magdziak Lopes (2-1, 1 KO) plans to avenge her only loss against Providence’s Kali Reis (2-0 1 KO), who won a hotly-contested 4-round decision in their first meeting, in a 6-round rematch.

Providence firefighter Eric Estrada makes his long-awaited pro debut as a cruiserweight in a 4-round match against Antonio Robertson (0-1). Estrada, whose brother is 2004 U.S. Olympian Jason “Big Six” Estrada, was perfect as an amateur with a 6-0 record, including victories in the New England Golden Gloves Tournament and Rocky Marciano Tournament.

Roxbury (MA) super middleweight Maceo Crowder (2-0, 1 KO), whose brother is 2008 U.S. Olympian Demetrius Andrade, takes on Worcester (MA) mixed martial arts fighter Ralph Johnson in his pro boxing debut.

Also slated to fight in 4-round bouts against opponents soon to be announced are Warwick (RI) super middleweight Keith Kozlin (5-1, 3 KOs), Woonsocket (RI) super middleweight Joe Gardner (4-1-1, 1 KO), Lincoln light welterweight Diego Pereira (4-0, 2 KOs), and Fall River (MA) middleweight Dustin Reinhold (1-1, 1 KO). All fights and fighters are subject to change.

Former STRIKEFORCE Light Heavyweight Champ Renato “Babalu” Sobral, American military hero and up-and-coming middleweight Tim Kennedy, welterweight Evangelista Cyborg and Hollywood’s Conor “Hurricane” Heun participated in an open media workout on Monday at Krav Maga Worldwide Training Center in Los Angeles, just two days before the upcoming STRIKEFORCE Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) event at Nokia Theatre L.A. LIVE in downtown Los Angeles on Wednesday, June 16, LIVE on SHOWTIME® at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).

Sobral (35-8), the former STRIKEFORCE Light Heavyweight (205 pounds) Champion who hails from Brazil and fights out of Orange County, will collide with exciting knockout artist Robbie Lawler (17-5) at a catch weight of 195 pounds in the main event. The fight will be Sobral’s first since losing his STRIKEFORCE belt to Gegard Mousasi on Dec. 19, 2009. Prior to the defeat, Sobral had reeled off five consecutive victories.

American military hero and San Luis Obispo native Kennedy (11-2) will face the former South African National Wrestling Champion Trevor Prangley (22-5-1) at middleweight (185 pounds) in one of the featured STRIKEFORCE fights at Nokia Theatre L.A. LIVE. Kennedy, a former United States Army Special Forces sniper with the 19th Special Forces outfit based in San Antonio, has toured the Middle East multiple times, and earned the Army’s Bronze Medal Star medal for valor under fire. Inside the cage, Kennedy has won three in a row and 11 of his last 12.

Evangelista Cyborg (17-13) will face DREAM belt-holder Marius “The Whitemare” Zaromskis (13-4) in a welterweight (170 pounds) contest. Conor Heun (8-3), who fights out of Hollywood, will face former world champion KJ Noons (8-2) of San Diego, Calif., in an excellent lightweight (155 pounds) match.

What the fighters had to say during Monday’s workout:

Babalu Sobral:

“I don’t think the move in weight will be an issue for me. The issue will be for him, not for me. In my last fight I was around 200 or 201 (pounds), so I’m comfortable in that range. I’m so ready for this fight; I can’t wait to get in there. I’m healthy and 100 percent.

“I’m very excited to fight in Los Angeles. I’ve been living in Orange County for a while now and I have a lot of friends living in Orange County and a lot of friends in LA. I’m training in Hollywood, so I have a lot of friends and fans around here. They’re all going to be at the fight on Wednesday. They already bought their tickets.

“I’m from California so of course I’m going to go for the Lakers against the Celtics. But I’m definitely going for Brazil in the World Cup. Brazil against (North) Korea on Tuesday – it’s a big game.

“I’ll do whatever it takes to win. It’s an MMA fight, so I’ll do whatever it takes. Sometimes you see an opportunity to knock him out, sometimes you see the chance to submit him and finish the fight. I’ll do anything to win.”

Tim Kennedy:

“Training went perfect. It was a great training camp, about four or five months long – a little longer than we anticipated because dates kept moving around for fights. I’m 100 percent healthy, stronger than I’ve ever been. It’s been perfect.

“I think I’m going to win. He’s tough, Trevor is an amazing guy all around, but I’m going to bring it to him.

“I’d like fight a couple more times this year. Maybe in August or September, then maybe around New Years Eve. I’m feeling good, I’m healthy. I came out of my last two fights unscathed. So, hopefully, this fight will be similar and I’ll be able to get right back in the ring.

“I was at a brewery the other day that has 300 beers on tap, and if you drink a certain amount of them – I don’t really drink – you get put up on the wall on a flying saucer. This guy was giving his acceptance speech for getting put up on the wall and he said, ‘there are a lot of things going on over seas in Afghanistan and Iraq so draft beer, not people.’ I thought to myself ‘that’s retarded.’ So I had to go over and tell him 1) we haven’t had a draft in a really long time, and 2) our entire military is made volunteers, like me. So I told him, ‘you want to join – here’s my business card. Give me a call.’ He didn’t call.”

Evangelista Cyborg

“I feel good and ready at this weight, stronger at this weight. I can’t wait to get in the cage and fight again. I want to fight the best.

“It doesn’t matter to me that she’s (wife Cris Cyborg Santos) is the champion now. I feel the same pressure I would for any normal fight.

“I’m very happy for her. I train her and I work with her, so I couldn’t be happier.

“Is anything different since she became champion? Now I take the trash out on time – everyday.”

Calvin “the Finisher” Kattar and Will “Brown Bomber” Santiago Get Back in the Cage for CZ 33 in Laconia, NH on Saturday, June 19

Kattar (9-2) will be taking on Chris Conner (5-2) and Santiago (2-0) will be fighting Lowell Zangri (2-0). Both are fighting out of IntenZe MMA Academy in Lawrence, Massachusetts.

Kattar, who is from Methuen, Mass., last fought March 26th at XCFL 2, lived up to his nickname when he “finished” previously undefeated Jeff Anderson (8-1) in the third round via a TKO, with punches while on his opponent’s back.

IntenZe MMA is also home to the “Guns Down Knuckles Up” movement trying to get troubled teens off the streets and into the gym to train.

Will “Brown Bomber” Santiago, of IntenZe MMA, gets his story about his move from the streets to the cage covered by WMUR and Eagle Tribune. “Off the streets and into the ring”, Lawrence’s Santiago fighting for a better life. The streets of Lawrence showed little mercy on Will Santiago. Growing up poor in a broken home, Santiago found trouble at every turn. “Street life is not something you choose,” said Santiago, now 26. “It’s something you’re born into.” After 10 years embroiled in drugs and violence — bouncing in and out of jail — Santiago decided to take his fight off the streets and into the “Octagon.” At 26 years old, Santiago will take the next step on what he hopes can be a long, productive journey in the mixed martial arts game…” Eagle Tribune (Jan 15th, 2010)
