Patience key for unbeaten featherweight Matt “Sharp Shooter” Remillard

MANCHESTER, Conn. (May 17, 2010) – Patience is the key for undefeated NABF champion Matt “Sharp Shooter” Remillard, who is preparing to defend his belt as well as fight for the vacant NABO title, Saturday night (May 22) against Carlos “El Rayo” Rivera at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Remillard, rated No. 8 by the World Boxing Council, understands the business of boxing and, at the tender age of 23, he realizes his time will come. “Hey, I’ll fight anybody, anytime,” the WBC’s No. 1 ranked American featherweight said. “I also know everything has to be right to put an undefeated fighter in a big fight — money and television. My opportunity is coming, hopefully within the next year, and I will be ready. I just need to be patient.

“My weight class is filled with action-packed fighters and for me to be rated No. 8 and the top American is an honor. I can’t wait to prove that I belong by fighting a top 10-rated fighter. I leave all that to my promoter (TKO Promotions) and manager (Bret Hallenbeck). If I just continue doing what I’m doing, I’m golden.”

The reigning WBA featherweight champion is Elio “The Kid” Rojas (21-1, 13 KOs) and No. 1 contender Israel “Magnifico” Vazquez (44-4, 32 KOs) faces rival Rafael Marquez for the fourth time May 22 in Los Angeles. The other top rated WBC featherweight contenders ranked ahead of Remillard are, in order, No. 2 Juan Carlos “Miniburgos” Burgos (24-0, 17 KOs), No. 3 Jhonny Gonzalez (43-7, 37 KOs), No. 4 Cholatarn O. Piriyapinyo (33-0, 19 KOs), No. 5 Justin “Le Malin” Savi (24-0, 16 KOs), No. 6 “Doctor” Oleg Yefimovych (18-1, 11 KOs), and No. 7 Daniel Ponce de Leon (39-2, 32 KOs).

Before Remillard gets his career-defining fight, he has to get past Rivera (16-4-2, 5 KOs), a crafty veteran from Florida. “Rivera’s fought some good fighters,” Remillard noted. “He’s tough and always comes to fight. I’m prepared to go all 10 rounds, if needed, and take home both title belts.”

Home, for Matt, is Manchester (CT), not very far from Mohegan Sun. “I’ve built-up a good fan-base fighting in New England and Mohegan Sun has become my second home,” Matt concluded. “It’s a beautiful venue with a great atmosphere and fans have been coming out to watch me and Peter (Manfredo, Jr. who fights Angel Hernandez in the May 22 main event, Remillard-Rivera is the co-feature) fight there. JOEY GILBERT – “SINK OR SWIM” MAY 22ND

May 18th, 2010, RENO – Former NABO, USNBC middleweight champion, and Contender season one alum, Joey Gilbert (18-2, 14KOs), will be returning to the ring on May 22nd at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno against tough veteran Anthony “Powerhouse” Bartinelli (20-13-2, 13 KOs).

Gilbert, who is coming off of an impressive stoppage victory of Ivan Stovall, looks to put his name at the top of the middleweight rankings once again. He turns 34 in June and realizes that the clock is ticking.

“This will be sink or swim for me.” Says Gilbert. “I have to perform well. I have to win on May 22nd in order to earn the chance to fight the bigger fights. This is my last run at it.”

Although Gilbert is coming off of a win, this will be his first fight back in his hometown since losing to local rival Jesse Brinkley in February of 2009. Brinkley, who is currently the IBF super-middleweight mandatory contender, beat Gilbert in a one-sided unanimous decision. Since then, he has changed his team, refreshed his outlook on boxing, and rededicated his efforts to becoming the best fighter he can be. In the only other loss of his career, Gilbert was on the wrong end of a close split-decision when his fight was prematurely stopped due to a cut caused by an accidental headbutt against world title challenger, Peter Manfredo Jr.

Anthony Bartinelli promises to be a test for Joey Gilbert. With a similar fighting style, the tough journeyman from Phoenix looks at this fight as his chance to gain the recognition he has never received.

“This could be a big break for me.” Says Bartinelli. “I’ve wanted this fight before, and I’m thankful to have it now.”

Both fighters find themselves at a crossroads. On May 22nd, it may be decided who continues down the path towards bigger and better things, and who will find themselves at a dead-end. The Gilbert vs. Bartinelli fight is scheduled for eight rounds.

McCullough plans Prizefighter punch assault

Former World Champion throwing 200 punches a round in training

Wayne McCullough says he will show that he is far from finished when he lines up for the Prizefighter Super Bantamweights on May 29.

The former WBC World Champion makes his return to the ring in the latest of Barry Hearn’s Prizefighter series at Bethnal Green’s York Hall after a two year absence from competitive action. The 39 year-old is the stand out name in the line-up, and insists that he will show that he can still compete at the highest level.

“In the last couple of years the media has said “McCullough is done” and that’s what I want the young kids to think,” said McCullough. “I’ve never shown in the ring that I am done, so how can they say that? If I’d shown that I am done in past fights it would be different but they can’t say that when I’ve fought at the elite level against guys like Oscar Larios?

“The time I’ve had off has not been my fault, and it’s not been for the lack of trying or training. It’s been a disappointment of course but I’ve kept going and I haven’t shown any signs of depreciation or anything – age is just a number really, if I’d shown that I was old or I looked old it would be different but I haven’t, I don’t drink, I don’t smoke, I don’t do drugs, I’ve always lived clean and everyone who knows me in boxing knows that I’ve always kept training since I was a little boy. I’m like a Bernard Hopkins, he’s kept himself in shape and he’s 45 years-old, so if he can do it I know I have plenty of years before I hit that.”

Prizefighter’s fast-paced three-round format may not sound like it would suit a fighter just shy of their forties and making a return after a lengthy absence, but McCullough has no doubts that his style suits the format.

“I can throw 200 punches every round without any problems and I do that in training every day – if a guy tries to keep up with that pace when he’s not used to it he’s going to be dead after two rounds. I do at least 20 rounds of punching on bag work and pad work at full-throttle and for Prizefighter I’ve stepped up to a faster pace, instead of looking forward to fighting ten or twelve rounds I’ve been looking at fighting three rounds at a time so I’ve stepped up my pace to make myself a little bit faster.”

McCullough is the latest big name to attempt to resurrect their career by winning Prizefighter, and the Belfast-born US citizen who lives close to Audley Harrison in America said that A-Force’s win at Prizefighter Heavyweights III will help him claim victory in London.

“I’ve got a place in California as well as Las Vegas and Audley Harrison lives just down the road from me and I’ve talked to him about what to expect at Prizefighter and it was good to talk from someone who has won it. Big Martin Rogan won the first ever Prizefighter too and I hope he’ll be there on the night – and I also hope that I’ve got something left in me that night too.”

While the attention is on McCullough, seven other fighters will be hoping the live Sky Sports event is their springboard to success. Nottinghamshire-based Esham Pickering has previously held the European, British and Commonwealth belts, while Liverpool’s Mark Moran fought for the British title.

There are two undefeated fighters among the eight. Welshman Ricky Owen has fought 11 times, while St Helens’ Craig Lyon had boxed ten times as a professional. Aberdeen-born Gavin Reid has fought for the Scottish title, Josh Wale of Barnsley has challenged for the English crown and Middlesbrough’s Chris Riley is a former England junior international.

“I only really know Esham Pickering out of the other seven fighters, I haven’t seen the other guys fight because I’ve been over here in America,” said McCullough. “It’s just like going back to the amateur days when you don’t know the guys you are going to fight until you get into the ring that night, so I’m going to go out there, throw punches and get my name on that trophy.”

The MMA event will be held at the Pierre-Charbonneau Center, located on 3000 Rue Viau in Montreal, under the title, “No Escape”. Guillaume “Il Toro” de Lorenzi will be making his first title defence of his lightweight belt against UFC veteran Dale Hartt. There will be no less than 12 electrifying fights for this event. Fighting in the main event of the evening, Guillaume de Lorenzi (8-1-0) has stopped 7 of his 9 opponents by way of KO, with his only loss coming at the hands of UFC veteran John “War Machine” Koppenhaver in February 2009. De Lorenzi bounced back from his loss to win his last 3 fights over the likes of young prospect Lindsey Hawkes, the French Sebastien Garguier, and most recently, Ryan Machan at the last Ringside event titled “Rage”, where de Lorenzi won the lightweight belt. The American Dale Hartt (6-2) is a member of Team Sityodtong, and has made 3 appearances in the UFC. Hartt’s first appearance for the American promotion was in July 2009 at UFC Fight Night 14, where he suffered a defeat at the hands of Shannon Gugerty. He was able to rebound from that loss to capture a victory against Corey Hill at UFC Fight For the Troops, but suffered the 2nd loss in his career against Dennis Siver at UFC 99.

In the co-main event, another UFC veteran Tom Murphy (6-0-0) will face Sean Salmon (17-9-0). Still undefeated after 6 professional MMA fights, the American Tom Murphy spends much of his time training under Firas Zahabi at Tristar Gym in Montreal. After defeating Icho Larenas in UFC 58, Murphy continued his winning streak at the expense of Gregory Millard, Jason Cecil and Bruno Hosier. Salmon, who is also a veteran of the prestigious UFC promotion, lost to Rashad Evans and Alan Belcher earlier in his MMA career. Salmon has also fought for Hardcore Championship Fighting where he defeated Marcus Vinicious, as well as Strikeforce, where he fought Jorge Santiago. He is coming off a loss courtesy of Alexander Shlemenko on March 13 in Finland. Sean Salmon is looking for a return to glory if he can be the one to hand Tom Murphy the first loss of his career.

Also on the card, fighting at lightweight, will be a battle between Derek Gauthier (6-1-0) from Quebec against the Nova Scotian Jason Mackay (9-2-0). Gauthier, who has been training at both Sparmax, under Normand Grimard, as well as at the Tristar gym under the tutelage of Firas Zahabi, is looking to pick up his 2nd straight victory since dropping down to lightweight. Gauthier’s only loss was to Tyler Jackson, who is a veteran of Bodog Fight. Gauthier showed tremendous character to rebound from that loss and get the KO win over Jason Rorison in Round 1. Jason Mackay did have 8 straight wins to begin his career, but then suffered losses against Steve Claveau and UFC veteran Drew Fickett. He did get back into the win column when he scored a split decision victory over Alex Sung in August 2009. Mackay will have a tough challenge ahead of him to shake off any ring rust quickly, since Derek Gauthier is sure to be ready and looking for his 5th KO win.

Another fight sees the undefeated Alex Garcia (3-0-0) facing Ricky Goodall (5-1-0) at 170 pounds. With 3 wins and 3 KO’s behind him, Alex Garcia has quickly been gaining recognition from the public for being an exciting and athletic fighter. After defeating TJ Coletti, Matt Northcott and most recently Jaret MacIntosh at the Ringside “Rage” event in March, Garcia will be looking to maintain his perfect record. For his part, Ricky Goodall is recognized as a fighter to watch from the East Coast, with 5 wins in 6 fights. Since making his professional debut in 2007, he waited 2 years before getting back into the ring. His only loss was suffered in the first match back after the long absence. He most recently defeated Jon McGrath and submitted Brian Mazerolle while fighting for Elite 1 Promotions.

Rounding out the fight card, the undefeated Daylin “The Caveman” Logan faces Lloyd Galindo, Samuel Guillet takes on Jason Rorison, Rejean Groulx of Drummondville fights Eugenio Carpine and a highly anticipated grudge match between Christopher Boisvert and his rival Kevin Morin. May 17th, 2010, RENO – Undefeated rising star, Brandon “Flawless” Gonzales (11-0, 9 KOs – middleweight), steps back into the ring against Mexico’s Victor Hugo Correa (12-4, 7 KOs) on May 22 at the Grand Sierra Resort.

Pickering: “This will be the greatest Prizefighter yet!”

Former champion aiming to pip legend McCullough to title

Esham Pickering claims that his best days in Boxing are yet to come and that will start with victory in Prizefighter Super-Bantamweights.

Pickering is part of Barry Hearn’s latest eight-man, one night tournaments which takes place at York Hall, Bethnal Green, East London on Saturday May 29.

The Nottinghamshire man has held European, British and Commonwealth belts but at 33 years-old he says that winning Prizefighter will help him claim more titles.

“This is everything to me, I’ll be doing my utmost to win Prizefighter and I really do believe I can,” said Pickering. “Outsiders looking into Boxing have been saying I’m finished and that I was finished back in 2005 – I haven’t been performing since 2004 really. I know that this is my redemption call though and I’m looking to lift the Prizefighter trophy and move on to win my British title outright which I need one more win to do that, then win my European title back, that’s what I’m looking to achieve and I know I can do it.

Wayne McCullough is the marquee name in the event but while Pickering regards the American-based Northern Irishman as a boxing great he is focused on the main prize rather than the former world champion.

“Wayne hasn’t been active for a while but he’s a force to be reckoned with, I don’t care that he’s 39 years old,” said Pickering. “He’s been a world champion and is a great ambassador for the sport so he’s got my utmost respect. Everyone is going to be up for it and with a big name like his in there it’s going to be such an exciting night – he’s a legend but I’m not really interested who I fight, I just want to fight and win Prizefighter.”

McCullough and Pickering will be the most familiar names on the bill, but Prizefighter has grown a reputation for offering hungry young fighters the chance to prove themselves on the biggest stage and the rest of the line-up will relish tackling either man.

With 43 fights to his name the Newark-based fighter is the most experienced fighter on the bill and he thinks that experience could be the key.

“Mark Moran has fought for a British title against Jason Booth and Josh Wale is a tough ask too – it’s going to be the best Prizefighter without a doubt. Three rounds might suit the lads who have just come out of the amateurs but when you do it three times in the night it’s a different story – especially without head guards and vests. So I expect my experience will come into play and I can box and fight too, and they’ll see that on the night. My best is yet to come in Boxing and this is my chance.”

Pickering expects to have a good following from Nottingham in the York Hall and watching live on Sky Sports, and his message is clear – the title and his future in the game is there for the taking.

“I’m going to give 100 per cent in every way on the night. I know I can box, I can fight and I’m strong. The fights I’m in will be exciting and entertaining. I’ve always been fit, lived a clean life and trained well, Prizefighter is my big opportunity and I’m going to grab it.”
