Ian ‘Dappa’ Napa: I’ll Beat Hall For British Title, Then I Want McDonnell.
On the 4th June, former British and European Bantamweight Champion Ian ‘Dappa’ Napa returns to the ring for the first time since contentiously losing his British title to Jamie McDonnell back in January this year, to face Doncaster’s tough, unbeaten prospect Stuart Hall at the Peterlee Leisure Centre in Peterlee, Tyne and Wear.
Following a sparring session with Matthew Marsh at the Ultrachem TKO Boxing Gym in Canning Town, Napa took the time to talk a little about the upcoming bout, “I’m looking forward to the fight. My opponent’s Stuart Hall. He’s a good fighter, lots of aggression and determination. You know, I’ve faced these type of opponents before, they make for a good fight. My preparations are going well, I’m in good shape and I’ve just got to box well and get a result.
After this fight there is only one option for me, I don’t want to have to just keep defending the British title, I want to move back up. Getting a fight with Jamie McDonnell, or if he doesn’t defend the European title getting whoever has the European title at the time I’ll be looking to fight them. I want to get the European title back.”
32 year old Napa, whose impenetrable defensive style has been likened to that of Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather, seems to have been on the wrong side of dubious judging more than most. None, though, could come close to the outrageous score of 112-117, in favour of McDonnell, given by Dave Parris back on the 22nd January.
The first few rounds started slowly, with Napa using his superior defensive skills to neutralise McDonnell’s seven inch height advantage and considerable reach. No matter how hard he tried McDonnell just couldn’t land a clean punch.
Napa kept his cool under pressure before capitalising, when McDonnell’s desperation led him to making uncustomary mistakes, with overhand rights and vicious hooks to the body.
By round three McDonnell seemed to have run out of ideas and just stuck to the basics. Meanwhile Napa was winning the rounds easily by setting traps and skillfully working the body before moving upstairs.
Round five not only saw McDonnell cut by an accidental clash of heads but he also had a noticeable swelling of the right eye. McDonnell looked as if he had been in a war, whereas Napa had barely broken a sweat.
Napa seemed to be in full control of the fight, masterfully turning McDonnell’s ineffective aggression against him. When McDonnell came forward, in straight lines, throwing a barrage of shots, Napa would just duck and weave before letting rip with slick, telling, combinations of his own.
Boxing Scene’s Oli Smith best described this with the statement “He (Napa) hit without being hit. Ultimately he made McDonnell look inexperienced”
The sixth round went McDonnell’s way as Napa seemed content to soak up some pressure. That didn’t last though as Napa stepped things up a pace in the seventh by taking the fight to McDonnell and throwing serious power into his punches.
During the eighth and ninth rounds Napa, uncharacteristically took control of the centre of the ring and again was by far the more aggressive fighter.
McDonnell’s corner got him to up the pace in the eleventh to try and gain control, but again the telling shots all came from the diminutive Napa as McDonnell barely laid a glove on the slick moving Londoner.
The raucous crowd ringside were on the feet as both men upped their work rate still more for the final three minutes. When the final bell rings it is clear to all but the most fanatical of McDonnell supporters, that Napa had done more than enough to retain his British title as well as secure the vacant Commonwealth belt.
Or had he? When the score cards were read out they showed the judges had declared a split decision victory for McDonnell by 115-114, 114-115 and the ridiculous 117-112.
The boxing media were as mystified as Napa that the result had gone against him, as clearly were the BBBofC who reacted quickly by making Napa the mandatory challenger for the title.
Napa had hoped that would mean a rematch with McDonnell, but that was not to be. McDonnell vacated the British title in order to face, and beat, Jerome Arnould for the vacant European bantamweight title.
When asked for his thoughts on the dubious loss to Jamie McDonnell, Napa just shrugged his shoulders and said, “The response Boxing News had, you know letters, alone shows you what people thought of the fight and that I won it. But I’m not going to keep on and on about it. That’s in the past. I want to go forward and regain the European title like I done when I first got robbed for the British title, I got it back. I just keep doing this, proving myself over and over again.”
Napa’s long time manager/trainer Brian Lawrence, who had been sitting next to his supremely talented charge throughout, then added, “Things like the Jamie McDonnell result just doesn’t affect him, it just makes him more determined.
He hasn’t been out of the gym since the McDonnell fight. He’s in good shape. Stuart Hall is gonna know about it on the night. There’s no way he can win.
Straight away after we win I’m going to call for Jamie McDonnell to put it on the line. I’ll say If you really thought you won the fight and you are Champion then defend, don’t run away.
As I said, straight after the British fight we’ll be looking for the European and then we want a World title shot. So that’s what we will be looking for. If Jamie McDonnell is in our way then we’ll be going right through him. Basically he can hide or come and face Ian Napa to prove who is number one.”
Napa nodded in agreement before adding, “Yeah, I want to get on the World scene, but obviously I have to get back on the European title scene first. In order to progress back onto the European scene I’ve got to get the British title back. So that’s my main objective”
Ian ‘Dappa’ Napa versus Stuart Hall for the vacant BBBofC British Bantamweight title will headline the Frank Maloney promoted event at the Peterlee Leisure Centre in Peterlee, Tyne and Wear on Friday, 4th June.
The stacked under card includes a six round bout featuring Prizefighter – Cruiserweight II winner John Lewis Dickinson and Olympic medallist Tony Jeffries in a six round Super Middleweight contest.

High Expectations For Debuting George Jupp At “Oakey’s Last Stand” On May 21st
This coming Friday 19 year old George Jupp will be taking his first tentative steps into the world of professional boxing, when he debuts against Peter Barney at the Bruce Baker and Ultrachem TKO Boxing Gym, co-promoted “Oakey’s Last Stand” event at the Mountbatten Leisure Centre, Portsmouth on the 21st May 2010.
Jupp, from Islington, North London, may not have had a particularly stellar amateur career, having only won around half of his 60 plus fights, but according to his highly experienced management and training team, Johnny Eames and Derek Grainger of London’s World famous fight factory – The Ultrachem TKO Gym in Canning Town – he has what it takes to have a good, if not great, professional career.
Eames and Grainger’s belief in the youngster is such that, at the tender age of sixteen, Jupp was asked to attend Matthew Marsh’s World title fight training camp in Tenerife. Whilst there Jupp proved beyond doubt that he could hold his own in such esteemed company.
Following his daily training session at the gym Jupp spoke of his upcoming debut. “I’m really looking forward to my pro debut. I did OK, not great, as an amateur. I had around sixty amateur bouts and won about half of them. I think those fights have taught me a lot.
I know the pro game is totally different to the amateurs, It’s like a totally different sport really, a lot of different training, different techniques and soaking up the professional knowledge and training from Del (Derek Grainger) Johnny (Johnny Eames).
You can’t learn from anyone better than Del and Johnny, they have so much experience. It also helps training here at the Ultrachem TKO gym as there’s always top class sparring. I’ve mean I’ve sparred with Akaash Bhatia and Matthew Marsh amongst others. All of that should help make the transition to pro easier. Mind you I think I’ll adapt really quickly as my style of boxing has probably been more suited for the pro game anyway.”
Eames, who guided Graham Earle and Kevin Lear to their World Championship successes, then added, “George came to us as a skinny scrawny little kid and over the three and a half years he’s been with us he’s developed into a man.
He had a mediocre amateur career, got to the London finals where he got beat by a very, very good London fighter who is now in the ABA finals. But I think George has got all the attributes to become a very, very good professional. We expect him to do really well this Friday.”
George Jupp Vs Peter Barney is on the undercard Tony ‘Oakey Kokey’ Oakey versus Michael Banbula for the British Masters Light Heavyweight title fight at the Ultrachem TKO Boxing Gym and Bruce Baker co-promoted “Oakey’s Last Stand” event at Mountbatten Leisure Centre, Portsmouth on the 21st May 2010.
The stacked undercard includes an intriguing Light Heavyweight contest featuring Jupp’s Ultrachem TKO gym mate, Peter ‘The Daddy’ Haymer against dangerous Portsmouth southpaw Paul Morby.
Another Ultrachem TKO Gym mate, Redhill, Surrey’s Daryl Setterfield faces unbeaten, in six outings, Wayne Goddard from Borden, Hampshire. Whilst at Super Middleweight, Newmarket, Suffolk’s Matt Jack has an equally tough opponent when he faces New Milton, Hampshire’s Danny ‘Dangerous’ Goode. YUSAF “MACK ATTACK” MACK RETURNS ON FRIDAY NIGHT JUNE 4TH AT THE LEGENDARY BLUE HORIZON

PHILADELPHIA (May 14, 2010)—World ranked Light Heavyweight Yusaf “Mack Attack” Mack will make his return to Philadelphia when he headlines a big night of boxing on Friday night June 4th at The Legendary Blue Horizon.
The card is promoted by Blue Horizon Boxing Promotions Inc. and SAM Promotions.
The night will also be a celebration of promoter Vernoca Michael’s 65th birthday
Mack, of Philadelphia has a record of 28-3-2 with seventeen knockouts and is ranked number eleven in the world by the IBF.
Mack will be looking to get back in the win column and climb back up the rankings after his sixth round stoppage defeat to former world champion Glen Johnson on February 5th in Miami.
That fight was an IBF elimination bout and a win would have catapulted Mack into a world title opportunity with reigning champion Tavoris Cloud.
Before that setback, Mack had won five consecutive bouts which included an impressive decision over the highly regarded Chris Henry on February 6th, 2009.
This will be Mack’s first appearance in Philadelphia since September 26th, 2008 when Mack took out Omar Pittman at the Philadelphia Armory.
Mack is undefeated at The Legendary Blue Horizon (7-0, 4 KO’s) and in his last appearance at “The Blue” Mack won the USBA Super Middleweight title with an eighth round stoppage over Shannon Miller.
Mack’s opponent will be announced shortly.
In the eight round co-feature, rising Featherweight, Coy “Pretty Boy” Evans will take on an opponent to be named.
Evans of Philadelphia has a record of 8-0-1 with two knockouts and is quickly becoming one of the hottest fighters in the city.
After not recording a stopping his first six bouts, Evans has scored explosive knockouts in two of his last three outing which includes his most recent outing when Evans annihilated Morris Chule in three rounds on April 9th at The Arena in Philadelphia.
An exciting undercard has been assembled and it will feature the very popular ladies Jr. Middleweight, Olivia “The Great” Fonseca (3-2-2, 2 KO’s) of Philadelphia as she will battle Kali Reis (2-0, 1 KO) of Providence, Rhode Island in a scheduled four round bout.

ROF 38 FIGHTER FOCUS: KATE MARTINEZ
DENVER, CO – While the Main Event of ROF 38: ASCENSION features a women’s bout for the first time in promotion history, the under card has two other women’s bouts as well. The sometimes daunting task of starting the Feature Bout portion of the event has been given to the ladies, as Kate Martinez faces Celestina Cano at 115lbs.
Kate Martinez started out competitively as an amateur kickboxer, which eventually lead to her winning the IKF Amateur World title in the summer of 2007. While competing in kickboxing she was still a student of the ground game. Continually putting the mat time in with her husband and coach Adam Martinez. Martinez runs a Royce Gracie affiliate school in Loveland, Colorado. This combination of skills and her competitive streak led her to MMA, and she debuted on Ring Of Fire in late 2007.
After accomplishing two of her goals, to get a title in kickboxing and to compete in MMA, Kate temporarily put her fighting career on hold so she could focus on running her business with her husband. But a once in a lifetime chance to travel to Japan made her get back in the gym. In 2008, Martinez was offered a fight with Yuka Tsuji, who at the time of their fight had an incredible record of 21 wins with only 1 loss. Martinez had always dreamed of travelling and fighting in Japan and this was her shot. She ended up losing the match but gained a life long experience. Kate then returned her focus to Brazilian Jiujitsu. Her hard work has paid off as she was recently promoted to purple belt by Royce Gracie himself. She now has her sights set on a return to the ROF cage on June 5th. Her opponent, Celestina Cano has a boxing and kickboxing background and trains out of Extreme Karate in Plainview, TX. Style wise this could be a stand up battle, but Kate hopes to use her experience to control the action where ever it may be. Kate has spent the last years honing her skill set, acquiring titles and accomplishing her goals. Her next goal will be to have her hand raised in victory at ROF 38.

LOUIS (May 16, 2010) – Alistair “The Demolition Man’’ Overeem lived up to his nickname and his billing as one of the most dangerous heavyweights in the world on Saturday as he easily retained his STRIKEFORCE World Heavyweight Championship with a 3:40, first-round knockout over Brett Rogers in the main event of an action-packed mixed martial arts card before 8,136 enthusiastic fans who turned out for “STRIKEFORCE St. Louis: Heavy Artillery” at Scottrade Center on SHOWTIME®.
In other televised results: Brazil’s Antonio “Big Foot” Silva (14-2), of Coconut Creek, Fla., registered the biggest victory of his career with a unanimous decision over Andrei “The Pitbull” Arlovski (15-8) of Chicago in a matchup of former world champions; world-ranked Brazilian middleweight “Jacare” Souza (12-2), of Rio de Janiero, Brazil, scored an impressive three-round decision over hard-trying Joey Villasenor (27-7), of Albuquerque, N.M., unbeaten Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu sensation Roger Gracie (3-0) of London, England, won his STRIKEFORCE and United States MMA debut with a 4:10, second-round submission (rear-naked choke) over ex- UFC heavyweight champion Kevin Randleman (17-15), of Las Vegas; and Rafael “Feijao’’ Cavalcante (9-2) of Rio De Janiero, produced a 3:45, first-round knockout (strikes) over Antwain “The Juggernaut” Britt (11-4) of Virginia, Beach, Va.
For Overeem (33-11), of The Netherlands, it was a brilliant performance and it marked the eighth time in nine fights that he has won in the first round since becoming the first STRIKEFORCE heavyweight champion in history with a second-round knockout over Paul Buentello on Nov. 16, 2007.
In a dominant performance, Overeem overwhelmed the outclassed Rogers (10-2) on the feet and on the ground from the outset. “It’s been a while, but now I’m back and I’m still STRIKEFORCE champion,’’ Overeem said. “Rogers has my respect.’’
The loss was the second in a row for Rogers, of St. Paul, Minn. In his last outing on Nov. 7, 2009, he came perilously close to becoming the first fighter to legitimately defeat the famed Fedor Emelianenko before falling, but styles make fights and he never had a chance against the talented Overeem. Rogers, known for his two-fisted power, hardly got an opportunity to let his fists go.
Silva performed in an intelligent, controlled manner throughout as he outpointed Arlovski by the scores of 29-28 three times. Silva dictated the pace and had an answer for whatever Arlovski attempted to throw at him. Arlovski fought with a bloody cut around his nose from early in the match.
The defeat was the third in a row for Arlovski, who was knocked out by Rogers and Fedor in his two previous starts.
Souza was also an impressive winner on an evening full of stalwart performances. A submission wizard, Jacare couldn’t get close to making the always-tough Villasenor to tap, but he was in control throughout and won by the scores of 30-27 and 29-28 twice.
The 6-feet-4 Gracie towered over Randleman, who stood his ground for one round, but was no match for the Brazilian when he turned it up a notch in the second. Gracie has now won all three of his MMA outings by submission.
A devastating striking with a fierce killer instinct, Feijao turned what had been an even, competitive fight around with a huge right hand that staggered Britt. He followed with a left hook and another right hand and the referee stopped it shortly thereafter.
By winning, Feijao, who has won all eight of his wins inside the distance, moved a step closer to challenging recently crowned STRIKEFORCE 205-pound champion “King Mo’’ Lawal. The victory was the second in the row for Feijao.

MMA/SHOWTIME Schedule: “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler (17-5) will collide with former STRIKEFORCE light heavyweight champion Renato “Babalu” Sobral (35-8) at a catch weight of 195 pounds when STRIKEFORCE hits Nokia Theatre L.A. LIVE on Wednesday, June 16 (11 p.m. ET/PT). In other announced fights on STRIKEFORCE: Los Angeles, former WWE superstar Bobby Lashley (5-0) will face fellow unbeaten Ron “The Monster” Sparks (5-0) in a heavyweight bout and DREAM welterweight champion Marius “The Whitemare” Zaromskis (13-4) will meet Evangelista Cyborg (17-13) in a welterweight contest.
On Saturday, June 26, at 10 p.m. ET/PT, the world’s No. 1 heavyweight and pound-for-pound MMA fighter, Fedor “The Last Emperor” Emelianenko (31-1), will make his eagerly awaited return to the cage to face two-time Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world champion and top-ranked superstar Fabricio “Vai Cavalo” Werdum (13-4) in a STRIKEFORCE and M-1 GLOBAL co-promoted event at HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif. The No. 1 female fighter in the world, STRIKEFORCE World Middleweight (145 pounds) Champion Cris Cyborg (9-1) will fight an opponent to be determined.

Krishna Godhania has more than twenty-seven years’ experience of the martial arts, and has spent the past eighteen years studying Eskrima in the Philippines. He has an international reputation for being one of the leading teachers of the Filipino martial arts, conducts seminars in many countries, and is the Eskrima technical editor and columnist for Martial Arts Illustrated magazine. Krishna currently heads the Institute of Filipino Martial Arts, an organization dedicated to the propagation and promotion of Eskrima-Kali-Arnis. Eskrima, which is also known as Arnis [De Mano] or Kali, is the indigenous martial art of the Philippine Islands.. Most people attending a Joe Carslake seminar make a point of attending another, his teaching and style is addictive to say the least.

However, as an holistic fighting art, Goju already incorporates elements from virtually every other fighting system and Gavin has remained within the Goju framework.?Gavin spent many years on the door and was a regular instructor for Meido Ltd, a company specialising in door supervisor, security and close protection. He has made TV and film appearances, published regular articles and wrote the highly acclaimed Four Shades of Black. He is Chief Instructor of Daigaku Karate Kai alongside Sensei Dan Lewis of Bristol Combat Goju Ryu and is also a regular on the UK MMA scene with his team DKK Fighters who compete successfu! lly in Cage Rage, Ultimate Challenge, and BAMMA. One student even made it as far as the UFC.
Dennis Jones also known as the “Samurai on the Door ” during his long running stint as a Martial Arts Illustrated columnist will be teaching his street fighting techniques perfected during his 27 yr career as a doorman in some of England’s toughest towns. Dennis’s background came from many years classical study of Kyokushinkai karate and tai chi as well as training with a host of professional wrestlers, making him one of the earliest practitioners of what we would now class as MMA.

Anthony is the founder of The Way of the Spiritual Warrior Martial Arts group based in Coventry. Over the past few years he has been honoured by Grandmaster Richard Bustillo by being inaugurated into the Martial Arts Hall of Fame, been the SENI Show Fighting Spirit Award Winner, awarded the World of Martial Arts TV personality of the Year presented by Royce Gracie, written a best selling self help book and won the UK’s Club Coach of the Year. The workshop is aimed to show exactly how pressure points can be applied in a street based confrontation and hopefully to dispel the myths surrounding this branch of the Arts. Anthony is rapidly becoming one of the most sought out pressure point instructors in the UK. This workshop was fully booked within weeks, ! hence the unprecedented second workshop on Sunday at 12.00pm.
Samuel Kwok Wing Chun Saturday 29th May
Samuel Kwok is the most senior representative of Ip Man Wing Chun. He has schools all over the world in more than 15 countries and has the honour of inheriting the original knives of Ip Man along with the three oldest journals of Wing Chun which were passed from Leung Jan to Leung Bik to Ip Man, Ip Ching and now with Samuel Kwok. This makes Samuel Kwok the true heir to the Ip family Wing Chun as no other can boast this fact. He will be displaying the books and the knives for all to see at Seni on stand 1252. He has written best selling books on Wing Chun and produced many dvd’s on the art as well as appearing in many magazine articles. He has also been recently added to the Martial Arts Hall of fame for his contribution to martial arts and will soon be appearing in a t.v series discussing the effects of Wu Shu.

Matt Tucker- Dog Brothers Sunday 30th May 1pm
Matt has been training in martial arts for over 20 years. As a teenager he started with Judo and then moved on to WTF Taekwondo which he continued for some years. In 1992 Matt stumbled across Wing Chun Kung Fu and trained for over 15 years under the direction of Master James Sinclair of the UK Wing Chun Association, opening his own branches in 2002. Matt always had a fascination with any style of martial art and began attending different seminars around the country. It was on one of these seminars that Matt heard about a group of martial artists known as the Dog Brothers who were based in Hermosa Beach California. This group practiced a style of full contact stick fighting with no protection other than a thin fencing mask and street hockey gloves. Matt res! earched these urban warriors and started training with DVD’s at home. Matt eventually made it out to California to train with Guru Marc ‘Crafty Dog’ Denny where for Matt, a new adventure began..

The founder and head trainer at Team Approach Solihull is Eddie Quinn, Eddie has been involved in Martial arts for nearly 25 years, and has been training in Muay Thai since 1990. Eddie nearly lost his life after an incident in Birmingham when he was 18 and was attacked and stabbed 6 times, his heart, liver, gall bladder, and lungs were all punctured in the attack. Any form of self defence has to be able to fill space, the way THE APPROACH does this is basically in a primal, heavy hitting way, “it reminds me of a cross between getting hit by a combination of a pick axe handle then getting thrown into the propellers of an aircraft, it hits and destroys everything that falls into its path.”

Urban Krav Maga is comprehensive: covering stand up hand-to hand fighting, ground-fighting, defences against knives, gun threats, stick attacks etc. The system focuses on the actual attacks, which occur on the streets and! aggressive fighting techniques; it is probably best known for its advanced anti-knife work and ground fighting.
Grandmaster Danny Guba- Defence Against The knife Sunday 30th May 4pm
Grandmaster Danny has trained constantly since 1964 and was promoted to head instructor in the Doce Pares Headquarters in Cebu, Philippines. From there he became Grandmaster Cacoy’s personal sparring partner in the Corto (Close Quarters).In 1996 Grandmaster Danny Guba decided to leave the Philippines and moved to the United Kingdom where he now lives in the city of London. He spoke broken English and was an alien in the British culture but the UK based Filipino Martial Art community helped him to integrate himself. Supreme Grandmaster Dionisio ‘Diony’ Canete appointed GM Guba as the Director of Doce Pares ‘Original Multi-Style’ System in Europe, charging him with promoting this beautiful art.
Brian Desir – Wing Chun Sunday 30th May 5pm
Originally a boxing student, Brian discovered Wing Chun whilst studying under Master Goh. In 1989, Brian met Samuel Kwok and Grandmaster Yip Chun. The system taught by Master Kwok was somewhat different from that of Master Goh and Brian began learning the entire system again.
From Master Goh, Brian had gained his strength and fighting ability as well as learning how to use many weapons. Sifu Kwok taught Brian the finer points of the system in its traditional form as taught by the late Great Grandmaster Yip Man (teacher of Bruce Lee).
Since then, Brian has traveled all over the Far East studying many other martial arts styles to increase his knowledge of the martial arts. The arts Sifu Brian has studied include Chinese Boxing, Iaido (Japanese Way of the Sw! ord), Mogendo Boxing and Thai Boxing, which he studied in Bangkok.

Marius Zaromskis to Battle Evangelista Cyborg in 170-Pound Featured Matchup
LOS ANGELES (May 15, 2010) – Former WWE superstar Bobby Lashley (5-0) will square off with fellow undefeated Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) heavyweight Ron “The Monster” Sparks (5-0) when STRIKEFORCE hits Nokia Theatre L.A. LIVE on Wednesday, June 16. DREAM welterweight champion Marius “The Whitemare” Zaromskis (13-4) will face Evangelista Cyborg (17-13) in a featured welterweight (170 pounds) contest.
The 33-year-old Lashley, a 6 foot 3, 265-pound native of Junction City, Kan., was overwhelmingly victorious in his STRIKEFORCE debut last Jan. 30, stopping Wes Sims with an onslaught of punches in the first round (2:06) at BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Fla. The popular Lashley enjoyed success with both the WWE and rival pro wrestling league, TNA, between 2005-07.
In his outing before last on June 27, 2009, Lashley scored an impressive first-round (3:17) TKO over 6-foot-5 inch, 350-plus-pound goliath Bob “The Beast” Sapp in Biloxi, Miss.
A resident of Denver, Colo., Lashley was a collegiate wrestling star for Missouri Valley College and member of The United States Army.
“I’m excited about fighting again,’’ Lashley said. “I’ve been working very hard and I am continuing to learn. The guy I am fighting is huge. This will be a great fight.’’
The 35-year old, 6-foot-5 Sparks, of Louisville, Ky., is a tough guy with freakish girth and power who brings it each and every time. An equally imposing physical specimen who has been pummeling opponents, Sparks is coming off a unanimous four-round decision over Johnathan Ivey in his last effort on June 3, 2009.
Until then, only one of Sparks’ fights had lasted more than a minute. The total elapsed time in Sparks’ previous triumphs, all of which he won by knockout, was 184 seconds. He won in 1:07, 0:36, 0:24 and 0:17, respectively.
“I like to get in and get the job done,’’ the hard-hitting Sparks said. “My last fight went all four rounds, but there is nothing I enjoy more than knocking a person out.’’
Sparks, who has been seeking a major fight against a “name’’ opponent, is looking forward to June 16.
“Trust me, we’re going to go down swinging,’’ he said. “There will be no tap-outs. I am grateful of the opportunity STRIKEFORCE is giving me and I am very confident of a victory.’’
Zaromskis is one of the deadliest strikers in MMA and an opponent’s worst “Whitemare.’’ Until falling to STRIKEFORCE World Welterweight Champion Nick Diaz on Jan. 30, Zaromskis had won five in a row and nine of 10.
In July 2009, the talented, aggressive-minded 5-foot-9, 29-year-old captured the prestigious DREAM 12 Welterweight Grand Prix in Japan by literally booting the daylights out of his last two tournament foes, winning each fight by spectacular, evil head kick, both in the first round.
Zaromskis has consistently produced highlight-reel performances on the big stage since turning pro in February 2000. A member of London’s Shootfighters fight team, he is looking to manufacture another one against the hard-nosed Santos.
“This is a very important fight for me,’’ Zaromskis said. “I was disappointed in my performance in my last fight but I know I can do better and expect to do better against a very dangerous opponent.’’
Santos, the husband of the No. 1 women’s fighter in the world, STRIKEFORCE 145-pound champion Cris Cyborg, dropped a split decision to Joey Villasenor in his STRIKEFORCE debut on June 19, 2009. That fight was contested at 185 pounds.
The 5-foot-10, 32-year-old Cyborg, a member of the famed Chute Box Academy, rebounded in his last start to score a 1:41, first-round TKO (head kick and punches) over Daniel Zarate on Dec. 1, 2009.
“My last fight for STRIKEFORCE against Villasenor was a hard, close fight that could have gone either way,’’ Cyborg said. “Zaromskis has a great, fantastic reputation and I know what he can do, but I am excited about this fight and putting together a winning streak.’’

The first-ever STRIKEFORCE event scheduled for mid-week will take place in the midst of the E3 Expo, the premier trade show for computer and video games. During E3 Expo 2010 at the L.A. Convention Center, EA SPORTS™ will exhibit its highly anticipated title, EA SPORTS MMA, in which STRIKEFORCE is featured as a premier league.
Doors at Nokia Theatre L.A. LIVE will open for the event at 5:15 p.m. PT. The first non-televised preliminary bout will begin at 6 p.m. and the first main card fight will begin at 8 p.m.
The event will be televised live on SHOWTIME® at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).
