Former MFC champ set for showdown with Lewis

All the talent in the world won’t get a fighter very far if he doesn’t complement his skills with all the necessary intangibles.
Emanuel Newton is easily one of the MFC’s most-talented fighters with an incredible amount of athleticism. But what Newton has lacked at this key time in his career is the mental game plan to keep himself on the right track. That, says trainer and MFC lightweight champion Antonio McKee, is about to change.
“He has improved so much. You’re going to see the Emanuel Newton who came to the MFC and beat up David Heath. You’re going to see the real ‘Hardcore Kid,’ ” said McKee, who will be in the corner of Newton (12-6) when he takes on Dwayne Lewis (11-4) in one of the featured fights at MFC 25: Vindication on Friday, May 7 at the Northlands Expo Centre in Edmonton, Alberta. The fight will also be part of the televised card airing live on HDNet Fights.
Newton had the distinction of holding one of mixed martial arts’ longest winning streaks when he captured the victory in 11 straight bouts between 2005 and 2008. That incredible stretch, which included his decisive second-round stoppage of Heath, culminated in his five-round verdict to take the MFC light heavyweight title from Roger Hollett at MFC 19.
But things spiralled downward for Newton from that point on. In his first defense of the championship belt, the Norwalk, California, product failed to recapture the attitude that garnered him title and he dropped a five-round decision to Trevor Prangley. Newton went on to lose two more fights including a three-rounder to Ryan Jimmo at MFC 23.
That skid has left Newton in an unenviable position. Has he become a thing of the past in the MFC’s 205-pound ranks, considering the rise of Jimmo, Lewis, and others who are riding high on impressive winning streaks?
McKee figures his protégé is nowhere near the end his mission because he has made an important life transition.
“He’s been drug-free for six months and training hard. Plus he’s got a baby on the way and think that’s really giving him something to fight for,” noted McKee. “He’s been improving every day. I think he’s going to bring an exciting fight and really bring the heat.
“He’s going to be aggressive. I think he’s looked at the mistakes he’s made and … he’s just hungry.”
The Lewis-Newton matchup fits alongside the rest of the huge lineup at MFC 25: Vindication including the main event of Thales Leites versus Jesse Taylor and the co-main event of Wilson Gouveia against Ryan Jimmo. Los Angeles (April 23)…At just 19-years-old, Mexican boxing wunderkind Saul “Canelo” Alvarez holds an undefeated record of 31-0-1 (23 KOs). In his four years as a professional fighter, the biggest challenge of his career will come in the form of Puerto Rican Jose Miguel Cotto, the older brother of superstar Miguel Cotto, and whose record of 31-1-1 (23 KOs) mirrors that of Alvarez, except for his one loss, a disappointing unanimous decision defeat at the hands of the former Undisputed Lightweight World Champion Juan Diaz. A punishing puncher, “Canelo” has yet to be tested by the likes of a veteran opponent of Cotto’s caliber.

The older Cotto knows a thing a thing or two about world titles. Having been close to winning the WBA World Lighweight title twice (once in the Diaz loss and another in a draw against Prawet Singwancha), Cotto knows a world title is not as easy to capture as it seems.

Although Alvarez’s goal may seem lofty, he has been preparing since he first started boxing eight years ago, when he picked up the sweet science at age 11 and subsequently dropped out of school in the eighth grade, against his parents’ wishes, to pursue boxing full-time. It was after seeing his oldest brother Rigoberto (Rigo) make his professional boxing debut, “Canelo” was hooked.
Now in his fourth year as a professional, Alvarez holds the NABF, WBA Fedecentro, WBC Youth, and WBO Latino welterweight title belts and since turning pro, has certainly made his mark. Female Amateur boxers will showcase high energy fights in the “The Road to London” Series on Friday, May 7, 2010 in conjunction with Trenton Housing Authority. This event will include many exciting bouts featuring boxers from the New Jersey and surrounding areas.
W.I.S.T. has a long history in boxing and was the first to bring an All Female Boxing show to Trenton, NJ. “This is a wonderful opportunity for the community to see female amateur boxers in action,” said Wanda Bruce, CEO of W.I.S.T. and Female Boxing Promoter. “Everyone is welcomed to attend and show support for our female boxers who often get overlooked,” Bruce added. Hot Brazilian middleweight prospect Michael Oliveira puts undefeated record on line Apr. 30 at Miccosukee

MIAMI (Apr. 23, 2009) – 2009 Brazilian Athlete of the Year, unbeaten middleweight prospect “Chairman of the Board” Michael Oliveira, returns to the ring April 30 to fight for the first time this year in a 6-round bout against 28-fight veteran Jessie Davis at Miccosukee Resort in Miami.
Oliveira (11-0, 8 KOs), who only turns 20 next Monday, is the heir apparent to retired Brazilian boxing star Acelino “Popo” Freitas. Michael hasn’t fought since December but he has been working out at Normandy Gym in North Miami.
“I’ve been training very, very hard,” he said. “I’ve had amazing sparring, too. We’ve been training twice a day for 1 ½ months. I’m ready for whoever they put in the ring with me. The time is right for me to fight again. You can’t rush or things won’t come out good.”
Now living and fighting out of Miami, the charismatic boxer is unique among contemporary fighters having had only two amateur matches, coupled with being a student at Miami Dade Community College, and coming from an affluent family.
Oliveira has a homecoming fight tentatively scheduled August 7 in Sao Paulo, where he was born, but first he has to get past Davis. “I use the August 7th fight as motivation for this fight,” Oliveira explained. “I know that I can’t lose April 30th for the August 7th fight to happen in Brazil. I’ve dreamed of fighting back home. I want to show everybody in Brazil that, every time I step in the ring, I represent our country.”

Roger Gracie Meets Randleman, “Jacare” Faces Villasenor May 15 in St. Louis

NEW YORK (April 22, 2009) –Unbeaten Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu sensation Roger Gracie (2-0) will make his long-awaited STRIKEFORCE and United States Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) debut when he squares off with two-time NCAA National Wrestling Champion and former UFC Heavyweight Champion Kevin “The Monster” Randleman (17-14) in a featured light heavyweight (205 pound) contest at STRIKEFORCE St. Louis: Heavy Artillery at Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Mo. on Saturday, May 15.
Middleweight (185 pound) superstar and 2008 DREAM Grand Prix tournament runner up “Jacare” Souza (11-2) will collide with hard-hitting sensation Joey Villasenor (27-6) in another featured bout.
The winner of the coveted ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship in 2005, the 28-year-old Gracie, a second degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt under Carlos Gracie, Jr., made history by submitting all eight of his opponents during the tournament, a feat that had never previously been achieved.
The 6-foot-4 Gracie’s submission skills have, thus far, proven their worth in MMA competition. In his pro debut on Dec. 2, 2006, he forced Ron “H20” Waterman to tap from an armbar and, on May 18, 2008, he submitted Japan’s Yuki Kondo with a rear naked choke.
A native of Brazil, Gracie resides in West London, England, where he owns and operates The Roger Gracie Academy.
At age 38, Randleman of Columbus, Ohio will attempt to re-enter the win column after two consecutive defeats and reclaim the glory he achieved more than a decade ago when he was crowned UFC heavyweight champion after scoring a knockout over Pete Williams at UFC 23 on November 19, 1999.
A tremendous athlete with explosive power, Randleman captured back-to-back NCAA Division I national wrestling titles in 1992 and 1993 while attending Ohio State University. His stellar collegiate career gained him entry into the school’s Hall Of Fame in 2004.
On Oct. 22, 1996, Randleman made his professional MMA debut in Brazil where he stopped Luiz Carlos Macial in the first round. After amassing a 6-2 record, he entered the octagon for the first time at UFC 19 on March 5, 1999, and pulled off a stunning upset of MMA and kickboxing legend Maurice Smith.
Randleman enjoyed a lengthy career with Japan’s PRIDE Fighting Championships, winning his first three fights with the now-defunct promotion and stopping superstar Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic in one round on April 25, 2004.
The 6 foot Souza, a 30-year-old submission wizard from Brazil, made a splash debut with STRIKEFORCE on Dec.19, 2009 when he forced former Olympic wrestling silver medalist Matt “The Law” Lindland to tap out from an arm triangle choke in the first round (4:18).
Two years ago, Souza made a brilliant run to the championship round of DREAM’s single-elimination middleweight tournament in Japan. After submitting Ian Murphy on April 29, 2008 with a rear naked choke in the first round (3:38) of their opening tournament round matchup, Souza went on to earn a unanimous decision over American star Jason “Mayhem” Miller on June 15, 2008 and, then, submitted Zelg Galesic with an armbar on Sept. 23, 2008.
The 35-year-old Villasenor, a seasoned striker and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu player who hails from Albuquerque, N.M., and is a member of the fearsome fight team led by Greg Jackson, is riding a four-fight win streak. He produced his last victory, a split decision over Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos, in his STRIKEFORCE debut at ShoWare Center in Kent, Wash. on June 19, 2009.
During the first live, primetime telecast of an MMA event on network television (CBS) on May 31, 2008, Villasenor came out of the gates with guns blazing and overwhelmed notorious brawler, Phil “The New York Badass” Baroni, crushing Baroni with a barrage of punches in the first round (1:11).

ANTHONY VOWS TO PROVE BOOKMAKERS WRONG AND WIN PRIZEFIGHTER

JOHN Anthony has vowed to upset the form book and beat the odds to win Prizefighter Cruiserweights II.
Doncaster-based Anthony, 35, is one of eight men in Barry Hearn’s latest Prizefighter tournament, to be staged at the York Hall in Bethnal Green, east London on Friday, April 30.
Anthony, who has won seven out of 18 fights, has been written off by bookmakers, who have priced him as a 16/1 outsider to claim the £32,000 top prize.
“People will probably under-estimate me and see me as an easy draw,” admitted Anthony.
“But that gives me a point to prove and my record doesn’t reflect what kind of fighter I am.
“I saw an interview with Darren Corbett and he said it was just between him and Herbie Hide but I don’t see it that way.
“I know I can beat anyone and, considering the competition, it’s a bit disrespectful for him to say that.
“My record doesn’t look good on paper but I haven’t had much notice for some of the fights I’ve lost.
“I run two businesses – a fencing business and a tree surgery business – so I work hard and find it hard to train properly.
“But for the last four months I’ve put the businesses on hold and got people to cover so I could concentrate 100 per cent on boxing.
“I’m happy to be in Prizefighter and I really think I’ve got a good chance of winning it.
“I’ve never trained this hard for any fight and I’m easily in the best shape I’ve ever been in.
“My main strength is that I can hit as hard as anyone in this division and as hard as most heavyweights so that’s what’s going to get me through.”
The Prizefighter contenders include former WBO heavyweight champion Herbie Hide, ex Commonwealth champion Darren Corbett and Mark Krence, who has fought for the British heavyweight belt.
Anthony, who wants to fight current British champion Rob Norton after winning Prizefighter, has already had some experience of the tournament as an unused reserve in Prizefighter Cruiserweights I last May.
“It was really frustrating,” added Anthony. “John Keeton got a cut in his semi-final victory and the doctor wasn’t going to let him fight in the final.
“It was touch and go as it was a bad cut. I got told to warm up and I could’ve gone straight into the final but then they let him fight.
“But now I’m in it and Prizefighter is a good competition – winning this will open a lot of doors for me.”

NEW YORK (April 22, 2010) – Former Rickson Gracie protégé and highly confident middleweight (185 pounds) “King” Kevin Casey (3-1) of Los Angeles will face the toughest test of his Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) career when he faces former Olympic wrestling silver medalist and MMA superstar Matt “The Law” Lindland (21-7) of Oregon City, Ore., in the STRIKEFORCE Challengers main event at Rose Garden Arena in Portland, Ore. on Friday, May 21.
A welterweight (170 pounds) battle between undefeated rising star “Relentless’’ Roger Bowling (7-0) of Columbus, Ohio, who’ll be making his STRIKEFORCE debut, and hard-hitting brawler “Vicious” Bobby Voelker (21-7) of Kansas City, Kan., has been added to the card.
In previously announced matchups, promising, unbeaten welterweight Tyron “T-Wood” Woodley (6-0) of St. Louis will face local favorite Nathan Coy (8-2) of Portland while Kerry Vera (2-0), of San Diego, Calif., and Julianna “The Venezuelan Vixen” Pena (2-0) of Spokane, Wash., will collide in a battle of 135-pound female prospects.

Casey, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu expert schooled by famed master Rickson Gracie, won his first start in 13 months with a dominant, first round (1:41) submission (rear-naked choke) of Chad Vance at STRIKEFORCE: Challengers last Nov. 20 in Kansas City.
The multi-talented Casey is also a hip-hop artist as well as a friend and business partner of MTV reality series superstar and Beverly Hills socialite, Spencer Pratt. Casey recently recorded the single, “No Surrender.”
Lindland captured the silver medal in Greco Roman wrestling while representing The United States at the 2000 Summer Olympics. A former All-American wrestler for University of Nebraska and the 1993 NCAA Big Eight conference champion, the 39-year-old will look to return to his winning ways after suffering two consecutive defeats.
The six-foot Lindland lost his last outing on a first- round submission (arm triangle choke) to superstar Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza at STRIKEFORCE: Evolution on Dec. 19, 2009. During a stellar 13-year MMA career, Lindland has fought the best, including the famed Fedor Emelianenko, and has triumphed over a number of all-time greats, among them former UFC champions Pat Miletich and Carlos Newton.
Two years ago, Lindland entered the world of politics, winning the Oregon Republican Party’s nomination for the House of Representatives before being defeated in the general election.
Nothing short of a wrecking machine, Bowling has been rolling since making his MMA debut in June 2007. The five-foot-nine, 28-year-old registered six consecutive first-round victories at the outset of his career before he had to settle for a 0:14, second-round TKO (punches) over Jerrod Appenzeller in his last start last Feb. 10.
The six-foot-one Voelker, who specializes in American Jiu-Jitsu, has won four of his last five fights, including a dramatic, come-from-behind second-round TKO (punches) over Erik Apple at the STRIKEFORCE: Challengers event last Nov. 20 in Kansas City.
A pro since February 2006, Voelker was rocked and dropped early in the opening round. But the momentum began to change by midway through the five-minute session.
Near the conclusion of the round, Voelker had assumed control, dropped Apple with an overhand right early in the second, pounced on his crumpled opponent and brought about a stoppage at the 1:23 mark of the round.
Rose Garden Arena doors will open for the STRIKEFORCE Challengers event at 5:15 p.m. The first preliminary card bout will begin at 6 p.m. and the first main card bout will begin at 8 p.m.
The event will be televised live on SHOWTIME® at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).
