LOS ANGELES (April 21) – The internet is buzzing about Mayweather vs. Mosley and everyone is asking “Who R U Picking?” Several polls have been posted charting the opinions of a diverse cross-section of people who are clicking and picking who they think will be victorious on May 1 when Floyd “Money” Mayweather and Sugar Shane Mosley meet in the ring at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in a mega-fight which will be produced and distributed live by HBO-Pay-Per-View® beginning at 6 p.m. PST/9 p.m. EST. Fans seem to be split down the middle with some interesting variations between males vs. females, West Coast vs. East Coast and between the top cities in the United States, but one thing the public agrees on is that this evenly matched bout could go either way.

Mayweather vs. Mosley – A Throwback to the Rich History of

American Fights and the Welterweight Division

LOS ANGELES (April 21)…Check your almanac: On the night of September 16, 1981, time stopped for one hour while welterweight champions Sugar Ray Leonard and Thomas Hearns traded punches in Las Vegas. That’s how big a fight it was. On May 1, welterweights Floyd “Money” Mayweather and Sugar Shane Mosley will clash in the biggest bout of 2010. The mega-matchup of multi-division champions, pound-for-pound kings and future Hall of Famers summons memories not only of Leonard-Hearns, but also of the rich history of American welterweights.

In recent years, boxing’s headlines have been made largely by foreign-born fighters like Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko, Ricky Hatton, Manny Pacquiao, Joe Calzaghe and Juan Manuel Marquez. At welterweight or otherwise, there have been precious-few all-American matchups. In that sense, Mayweather-Mosley is a throwback fight.

In the boxing-rich 1980s, the majority of super-fights were contested between Americans. Among the memorable matchups were Leonard-Hearns, Leonard-Marvin Hagler, Hagler-Hearns, Larry Holmes-Gerry Cooney, Holmes-Muhammad Ali, Michael Spinks-Holmes and Mike Tyson-Spinks.

The same can be said for many of the major fights of the 1990s, including Evander Holyfield-Riddick Bowe, Holyfield-Tyson, Holyfield-George Foreman, Michael Moorer-George Foreman Roy Jones-Bernard Hopkins, Jones-James Toney and Pernell Whitaker-Oscar De La Hoya.

The first decade of the new century has seen a shift. There have been big fights involving Americans (De La Hoya-Mayweather, De La Hoya- Hopkins, Mosley-De La Hoya I and II), but nowhere near as many as in previous years. Perhaps Mayweather-Mosley represents the beginning of a shift back to the way it used to be.

No one is quite sure of the origin of the word “welterweight,” but boxing historians are certain that the 147-pound division’s first world champion was Boston’s Paddy Duffy, who was crowned in 1888. In the 122 years since, the division has been dominated by Americans.

Consider the following:

*In 1939, St. Louis’ Henry Armstrong, who is usually ranked below only Sugar Ray Robinson on all-time pound-for-pound lists, defended his welterweight title an incredible 11 times. This feat took place only a year after Armstrong defeated Chicago’s Barney Ross, an all-time great himself, to win the title.

*New York City’s Sugar Ray Robinson is remembered primarily as a middleweight, but was at his fighting best as a welterweight. He defended his title five times and was beaten only once, by a middleweight…Jake LaMotta.

*A handful of the fighters who have held the mythical pound-for-pound title did so as welterweights, including Whitaker (Norfolk, Virginia), Leonard (Palmer Park, Maryland), Mayweather (Grand Rapids, Michigan), Mosley (Pomona, California), De La Hoya (Los Angeles) and Donald Curry (Fort Worth, Texas).

*Other legends who held the welterweight title before jumping to middleweight include Mickey Walker (Elizabeth, New Jersey) and Carmen Basilio (Canastota, New York).

*Four of Ring Magazine’s 10 best welterweight fights of all time were all-American affairs: Basilio-Tony DeMarco II, Leonard-Hearns I, Simon Brown-Maurice Blocker and De La Hoya-Mosley I.

American athletes have historically been bigger than their foreign counterparts. Scan boxing’s various divisions and you’ll see that while the vast majority of heavyweight champions have been American, the United States has produced very few notable flyweights and bantamweights.

With a limit of 147 pounds, the welterweight division lies somewhere near the middle of boxing’s eight original weight classes. One might say it is the average or median of all weight classes and as a result, there have been great fighters from all over the world competing in the division. Pacquiao hails from the Philippines; Miguel Cotto, Felix Trinidad, and Wilfred Benitez from Puerto Rico; Ike Quartey from Ghana; Ted “Kid” Lewis from England; Joe Walcott from Barbados; Jimmy McLarnin from Ireland; Pipino Cuevas from Mexico; Roberto Duran from Panama and Jose Napoles and Kid Gavilan from Cuba.

Still, Ring Magazine lists Americans as the four best fighters in the history of the division (Armstrong, Robinson, Leonard, and Ross). Until the recent influx of titlists from the former Soviet Union and elsewhere, Americans dominated at heavyweight, and their excellence was best explained by genetics. Not so at welterweight, where the fighters have always battled on an even playing field.

Mayweather-Mosley serves as a reminder not only that Americans remain among the world’s best fighters, but also that the welterweight division is still red, white and blue.

April 20, 2010 – Former 3-time world champion in two weight divisions, Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero, greeted media and fans today at his open workout which took place at the San Jose Boxing and Fitness gym. Guerrero battles Roberto Arreita on the return of Telefutura’s “Sólo Boxeo Tecate” boxing series scheduled for Friday April 30 at the Tropicana in Las Vegas.

About his return to the ring

“I’m excited to be fighting on Telefutura’s first show back. The “Sólo Boxeo Tecate” boxing series has been great for boxing fans. I can’t wait to let my hands go and show the fans that I’m back and ready to fight the best in my division.”

“It’s been a good training camp. My sparring partners gave me good work. I’ve saw some tape on Arrieta and we have a solid game plan for this fight. I know he’s going to be gunning for me, but that’s ok, because I’m ready to go.”

Gabor Veto wins vacant WBC Youth World lightweight title

Saturday night at the ArteCad Arena in Tramelan, Switzerland, the 21 year old Gabor Veto (15-0) made short work of it defeating the tough Kenyan Omari Ramadan (7-4) to win the WBC Youth World Lightweight title.

The WBC number 24 Veto, showed excellent boxing skills to score a 3rd round TKO after Ramadan seemingly quit after receiving a lot of punishment.

The first round was a feeling out stage as both boxers showed respect for one another. Veto landed some good combinations to the head and body of Ramadan on occasions but both fighters seemed tentative to take a risk.

In the second round, the Kenyan Ramadan tried to press the action a little more. This was Ramadan’s second attempt at a Youth title previously losing in 9 rounds in an attempt for the Global Boxing Council Youth title in Germany in 2008. Veto’s defense was good and most of Ramadan’s shots where blocked while Veto seemed always in control. Ramadan was warned several times by referee Fabian Guggenheim for having his head too low. Veto found a target for his jab and landed it often.

Going into the 3rd round, Ramadan appeared a little tired and Veto sensing this, picked up the pace. Veto started to land his shots at will with Ramadan having no answer for the speed and power of Veto. Veto caught Ramadan with a good combination to the head and at that point Omari Ramadan, who seemed overwhelmed, turned his back and walked to his corner signaling the end of the fight.

Gabor Veto was crowned the WBC Youth World Lightweight Champion. Veto from Varpalota, Hungary remains undefeated and raises his record to 16-0 (13KO) while Omari Ramadan falls to 7-5-1.

The WBC vice president Rex Walker from Colorado, USA was the night’s supervisor and presented Veto with his new belt. There was a good crowd on hand at the ArteCad arena which included the Hungarian ambassador Dr. Erszebeth Nagy.

Danny Garcia, Karl & Mike Dargan, Julian Williams will look to thrill the hometown fans on May 7th

PHILADELPHIA (April 20, 2010)—On Friday night, May 7th, boxing returns to the Arena (Formally The New Alhambra) in South Philadelphia as prized prospect, Danny “Swift” Garcia will risk his undefeated mark when he takes on tough Christopher Fernandez in a ten round Jr. Welterweight bout that will headline a big night of boxing that will be promoted by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Tecate and Joe Hand Promotions and will be televised all over the country on Telefutura.

Garcia of North Philadelphia has been perfect in his sixteen fights as a pro and has scored ten knockouts.

The twenty-two year has been matched tough and come through with flying colors as evidenced by the high quality opponents that he has fought early in his career.

In just his fourth pro bout, Garcia fought and scored a six round unanimous decision over former four-time world title challenger, Julio Gamboa (28-12-2) on May 3rd, 2008.

On June 12th, 2009, Garcia took out Pavel Miranda (16-3) and quickly followed that up by blasting out former three-time world title challenger Oscar Leon (28-9) just two months later.

Garcia made an emphatic statement as he returned to his hometown to score a “Highlight Reel” second round destruction of Enrique Colin (29-5-3) on December 2nd at The Liacouras Center on Bernard Hopkins-Enrique Ornelas undercard.

In his last outing, Garcia won a ten round split decision over the experienced Ashley Theophane (25-3-1) on February 26th in El Paso, Texas.

Garcia has been hailed by many as the next world champion from the talent laden city of Philadelphia.

Fernandez of Salt Lake City, Utah brings in a mark of 19-9-1 with eleven knockouts.

He has shared the ring with some of the best fighters in the world such as Currant WBC Super Lightweight champion Devon Alexander and former IBF Jr. Welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi.

In the bout against, that took place last April against Malignaggi, Fernandez landed a hard left hook and briefly rocked the Brooklyn, New York native but that wasn’t enough in dropping the unanimous decision.

An exciting undercard that features some of the best prospects from Philadelphia has been assembled.

In the six round co-feature, Karl “Dynamite” Dargan will take part in a Lightweight bout against an opponent to be named.

Like Garcia, Dargan was a highly decorated amateur and has raced out to a perfect record of 7-0 with three wins coming by knockout.

Dargan of Philadelphia will be making his second appearance in his hometown as he scored a six round unanimous decision over Samuel Santana on December 2nd at The Liacouras Center.

Dargan’s brother, Mike “Sharp” Dargan will be returning to the ring after a five year absence.

Dargan, 1-1 will see action in a four round Jr. Middleweight bout against an opponent to be named.

Another former amateur star, Julian Williams of Philadelphia will be making his long awaited pro debut against an opponent to be named in a four round Jr. Middleweight bout.

There will be more bouts featuring some the best fighters in Philadelphia announced shortly.
