PROVIDENCE (April 15, 2010) – Many of New England’s top prospects will be in action May 7 on the “Spring Fever” card, presented by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc. (CES), at Twin River Event Center in Lincoln, R.I.

New Bedford (MA) welterweight Jason “School Boy” Pires (22-3-1, 9 KOs), the former USBA super bantamweight champion and active New Bedford police officer, is scheduled to headline in the 8-round main event.

Also slated to fight in 4-round bouts are Providence super middleweight Vladine Biosse (5-0, 4 KOs), former University of Rhode Island football player who is back after missing five months with a hand injury; “Irish” Micky Ward-trained Barnstable (MA) heavyweight prospect Jesse Barboza (3-0, 3 KOs), a 3-time New England Golden Gloves champion; Warwick (RI) super middleweight Keith Kozlin (5-0, 2 KOs); Hartford middleweight David Bauza (4-0, 3 KOs) vs. Ismael Garcia (1-0); New Haven light welterweight Edwin Soto (3-0, 2 KOs); Marshfield (MA) welterweight Aleksandra Magdziak Lopes (1-1, 1 KO) vs. Natoya Ervin (1-4) and New Haven (CT) middleweight Ricky Dawson, whose brother Chad is recognized as one of the top pound-for-pound boxers in the world, making his CES and pro debut. Herning (14.04.2010) – Up-and-coming tennis ace Caroline Wozniacki, the world number two and 2009 U.S. Open finalist, will be ringside on April 24 to support fellow Danish superstar Mikkel Kessler in his must-win Super Six World Boxing Classic clash with WBC Super-Middleweight Champion Carl Froch. Wozniacki and Kessler have been good friends for a long time, and despite a very tight tournament schedule, the 19-year-old sensation will travel to Herning to cheer for the “Viking Warrior” in the most important fight of his career. “Mikkel is a very good friend of mine,” Wozniacki said. “He is a great athlete who works very hard for his success. I really look forward to watching him beat up Carl Froch in Herning on April 24. Even though it will be a tough fight, I am sure Mikkel has got what it takes to leave the ring

NASHVILLE, Tenn., (April 14, 2010) – Former University of Tennessee linebacker Ovince Saint Preux made Mixed Martial Arts history by recording the first knockout in the state of Tennessee’s first sanctioned MMA fight in 2009. He’ll look to keep his MMA career on the upswing this Saturday night when he competes at the STRIKEFORCE Nashville: Henderson vs. Shields event here at Bridgestone Arena.

Doors at Bridgestone Arena will open at 6:30 CT. Saint Preux (4-4), of Knoxville, who will take on Chris Hawk (3-3) of Memphis in one of seven undercard fights, is a 6-foot-3, 26-year-old who played for the Vols from 2001-2004. After graduating with a degree in Sociology in ’04, he became heavily involved in MMA, utilizing his impressive wrestling skills and natural athletic abilities. He competed in Tennessee’s first sanctioned MMA event on Feb. 20, 2009.

In a 2009 Sports Illustrated poll, Saint Preux, who fights out of Knoxville MMA, finished second for best submission of the year after making Ombey Mobley surrender from a slick pressure submission known as a “calf-slicer” on April 25 in Knoxville.

Question: How tough has the transition been from football to MMA?

Saint Preux: “The biggest thing for me was just learning all the different disciplines and at times it’s been kind of frustrating. I’ve played football my entire life and so I would get mad at first when I wouldn’t get something right away. But I just shrugged my shoulders and knew it would all come together over time and that eventually I’d be pretty good at it.”

Question: Your record is 4-4. What do you attribute to your four losses so early in your pro career?

Saint Preux: “I’ve fought some tough guys. Usually when you start out in this sport you don’t fight guys as tough as the ones I did. When I first started I really didn’t care who I fought. Looking back I probably should have won all of those fights I lost. I think it came down to my cardio. But I’ve learned from each of those losses. I’m not mad I got those losses. I’m actually happy because I learned so much from it. My career is young and I’ll only come back stronger.”

Question: You fought on the first professional MMA card ever in Tennessee. What was that like?

Saint Preux: “A lot of people in Knoxville know my name and they had watched me play football but had never seen me fight. I thought if I lost I would never hear the end of it (He recorded a one-kick knockout of light heavyweight CT Turner). I’m proud to say I have the first knockout in the history of fighting in the state of Tennessee.”

Question: Which is a bigger rush for you, running out of the tunnel before a football game or hearing your name announced before you enter the cage?

Saint Preux: “Well, the University of Tennessee has one of the biggest stadiums so to hear 100,000 cheering is quite a rush. The thing at UT is you’re running out there with 80 or 90 other players so it makes you feel better. Everybody’s not just watching you but all the others on the football team. As far as MMA goes, there are going to be a lot of fans in Nashville and it’s going to be loud. I’ll be able to feel it in my gut. I’m just going to have to take a deep breath and take it all in because not too many people get to experience what I get to experience.’’

Question: Herschel Walker will be in Nashville to watch the fight. Did you watch his last fight on SHOWTIME?

Saint Preux: “Yeah, I did. He looked real, real good. And he was in great shape, too. My hat’s off to him. He did a great job. This could start a trend, you never know. There have been other football players who have tried to cross over and do MMA and it hasn’t gone so well for them, but the discipline aspect is there. As far as learning the stuff it’s there.”

Question: What do you know about your opponent, Chris Hawk?

Saint Preux: “I heard he trains at a pretty good Jiu-Jitsu and judo school. The other thing I found out about him is that he fought on WCL (World Combat League) so he must be a pretty good stand-up guy. He’s a good athlete and he’s pretty strong. I’m going to have my hands full. Whether I win or lose I know it’s going to be a good show because I’m all about putting on a good show.”

The Pressure of a Perfect Record; When Someone’s “0” Just Might Go

Boxing is not a sport that readily lends itself to statistics, but one set of numbers is as elemental as a left-right combination: a fighter’s wins, losses and draws. We often overvalue a good record and misinterpret a mediocre one; there are dozens of 10-loss veterans who are better than young fighters with only one or two defeats.

Nothing, however, catches our eye like a perfect record and when one or both undefeated fighters square off, you can count on either the ring announcer or the TV commentators declaring, “Somebody’s ‘0’ has got to go!” or “Maybe tonight his ‘0’ might just go!”

Yet the fascination with a fighter who’s never lost remains strong. For instance, the appeal of Floyd Mayweather, who’s “0” is on the line against Sugar Shane Mosley on May 1 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and live on HBO Pay-Per-View®, can be attributed to his sustained excellence and his star power, but there’s something more. Over the course of his 15-year career, Mayweather’s engaged in 40 fights, and each time he’s proven himself the better man.

Maybe we focus on a perfect record more than the fighters do…

“I don’t think about the ‘0’,” said Mayweather, whose last loss came on July 22, 1996, at the Olympic Games in Atlanta. “I think about winning. Everything takes care of itself if you win.

“Of course it’s a great thing to be undefeated, but I don’t consciously think about it when I’m preparing for the next fight.”

The record against which all others are judged is former heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano’s mark of 49-0. In September 1985, then-WBC titlist Larry Holmes was 48-0 when he lost to Michael Spinks.

“I was always tying records, breaking records; it didn’t mean [expletive] to me,” Holmes said. “I didn’t care. What was important was making money, keeping the title, and proving people wrong.

“The undefeated record meant I wasn’t getting beaten up, and that meant a lot to me.”

In November 2008, super middleweight/light heavyweight champion Joe Calzaghe fought for the last time. He retired with a record of 46-0. What made Calzaghe different from most unbeaten fighters is that his toughest tests, vs. Jeff Lacy, Bernard Hopkins and Mikkel Kessler, came toward the conclusion of his hall of fame career.

“I never really dwelled on the ‘0’ until close to the end, when I realized I had only a couple of fights left, I was undefeated and I could retire that way,” Calzaghe said. “I always hated to lose, and when I did so as an amateur, it burned me up inside and created my motivation for winning.

“Taking big fights wasn’t a risk for me because I believed in myself and went for it. I can say, however, that it was a relief when it was all over and I finished undefeated and ahead of the game.”

Calzaghe certainly fought the best available opposition, as did unbeatens Marciano and Ricardo Lopez (51-0-1), but in today’s boxing world, there are four major titles per division and, as a result, champions can protect their records more easily than in the past. That’s largely why alphabet titlists like junior welterweight Terry Marsh (26-0-1), welterweight Michael Loewe (28-0) and junior featherweight Ji Won Kim (16-0-2) were able to retire without having lost. Marsh and Loewe defended their respective titles only once each.

The question remains…is a perfect record a sign of perfection or does an imperfect record reveal anything at all? Consider the following:

*Ninety-nine percent of boxing historians rank Sugar Ray Robinson as the best fighter in history. He lost 19 times.

*Muhammad Ali was “The Greatest” despite losing five fights. In fact, he arguably gained more respect in his first loss, to Joe Frazier, than in building a record of 31-0.

*Since 1900, eight world champions have retired-and stayed retired-without having lost a fight. Even at their respective peaks, five of them never made the pound-for-pound top 10.

*Among today’s elite, Bernard Hopkins lost his professional debut and Manny Pacquiao lost to an opponent who went 2-4-1 in his next seven fights.

In evaluating recent champions, then, we must look at their body of work, and not just their records. The resume of five-division titlist Mayweather is impressive, making his perfect record all the more eye-popping. Maybe, just maybe, remaining undefeated and keeping his “0” means more than he’ll acknowledge.

“No one wants to lose their ‘0’,” said Floyd Mayweather Sr., a top trainer and Mayweather’s father. “I’m sure he thinks about it and it motivates him. Fortunately for my son, it’s so far so good and I don’t see anyone taking that ‘0’ away from him either.”

Ranked fourth in the world by the WBA, Argentinean warrior Hector David Saldivia (33-1, 26 KOs) has been making waves in the welterweight division for the last two years. Winner of the WBA Fedelatin title, he has defeated the likes of Omar “Tito” Weis, Ricardo Cano, Daudy Bahari and Luis Rodriguez. On May 1, “El Tigre” makes his United States debut against Said Ouali.

A native of Morocco now fighting out of Las Vegas, Said Ouali (26-3, 18 KOs) gets a chance to perform in front of his adopted hometown crowd on May 1 when he takes on Argentina’s Hector David Saldivia. Winner of 12 of his last 13 bouts, this southpaw standout who is ranked number five in the world by the WBA is well aware that he can catapult himself even higher up in the 147-pound rankings with a victory over Saldivia.

War Machine vs. Tex Johnson @ Wild Bill’s Fight Night on GFL

For the past month everyone in the MMA community has been asking….is it still on? Is War Machine vs Tex Johnson on Saturday, April 17 at Wild Bill’s still on? The answer is YES!!!

Despite War Machine’s recent arrest outside a San Diego bar that landed him on TMZ and a spit bag over his face, the fight is still on for Saturday, April 17!

In February of 2009, he legally changed his from Jon Koppenhaver to War Machine. He had one of the best fights in the history of MMA PPV. He’s starred in a porn movie with Digital Playground. He’s several times faced legal action outside the cage. To raise money for his attorneys, he’s put on ebay all his memorabilia from his MMA fights including some of his most personal items – his liver, his kidney and his sperm for sale!

And in only eight days, the MMA legend known as War Machine will come to Atlanta to fight local standout Tex Johnson in the main event of Wild Bill’s Fight Night on Saturday, April 17!

Wild Bill’s Fight Night is not new to the spotlight of the MMA industry hosting many of the country’s top fighters, and with that controversy has not been far away either. The last Wild Bill’s Fight Night featured Junie Browning, one of MMA’s most controversial fighters. After hosting Junie in the main event, War Machine had to be next!

But the War Machine vs Tex Johnson fight was in jeopardy only last week when War Machine was arrested at a San Diego bar for allegedly carrying deadly weapons, which turned out only to be his fists! See TMZ story by clicking here.

Now it’s on for Saturday, April 17 and War Machine will bring his 10-3 record to Wild Bill’s to fight the 6-2 Tex Johnson in his hometown.
