MFL : Battleground results

Montreal, February 28th 2010 – The Mixed Fight League presented its second event, MFL : Battleground, this past Saturday at the Montreal’s Complexe Sportif Claude-Robillard. Despites the fact the MFL experienced a few changes to its original lineup, the promotion presented 9 explosive fights. The Mixed Fight League has brought major changes and improvements to its production and brought the show to another level with the addition of Anthony Horng and Mark Colangelo to the MFL crew.

The fight between Martin Grandmont and Sebastien Garguier pleased the crowd and was an awesome demonstration of striking abilities. KO of the night was credited to Dimitri Waardenburg, who gave a ground and pound clinic to his opponent, Mark Fraser. Tom Murphy showed that experience and game plan can make the whole difference when he pounded Bruno Hosier for the win. The popular Steve Bossé delivered his most impressive fight and got his most important win in career over the UFC veteran Marvin “The Beastman” Eastman. David Loiseau showed a lot of confidence and got his 19th win in career over Chester Post.

During a special auction held for the Red Cross at the benefits of the Haitians victims, the full-scale autographed pictures of David Loiseau and Steve Bosse were respectively sold 500$ and 600$ for a total of 1100$. Also, the MFL committed itself to donate 2% of its tickets sales to the Red Cross.

San Jose’s Jenny Trujillo (1-0) and Nicole Johnson (1-1) have been addd to the RFX III card. The two featherweights will do battle on the third installment of the Reno Xtreme Fights series.

HOBOKEN, N.J. (Mar. 1, 2010) – Hall of Fame-bound Erik “El Terrible” Morales returns to the ring March 27 after 2 ½ years of inactivity, headlining “The Champion Returns” pay-per-view event, on a mission to become the first Mexican boxer to capture world titles in four different weight classes.

Integrated Sports Media, North America’s undisputed leader pay-per-view distribution of major boxing events, has teamed with KO Entertainment to bring American fans Morales’ comeback fight against former WBA lightweight champion Jose “Jicaras” Alfaro, as well as the WBA light heavyweight eliminator between former WBA light heavyweight champion Hugo Hernan “Pigu” Garay and WBA #4 rated Chris “Hard Hittin’” Henry, live from Monterrey, Mexico.

“The Champion Returns,” presented by KO Entertainment, is being distributed in the United States by Integrated Sports Media for live viewing at 9 PM/ET – 6 PM/PT on both cable and satellite pay-per-view via iN Demand, DIRECTV, TVN and DISH Network, for a suggested retail price of only $29.95.

Seven-time world champion Morales (48-6, 34 KOs), the last opponent to defeat Manny Pacquiao, takes on Nicaraguan knockout specialist Alfaro (23-5, 20 KOs) in the 12-round main event for the WBC Intercontinental welterweight crown.

Morales first captured the WBC super bantamweight title in 1997 and held it through 2000, making eight successful defences, also adding the WBO belt with his victory against another Mexican fighting legend, Marco Antonio Barrera. Morales moved-up in weight and in 2000 and he won the WBC featherweight championship, which he held for two years, later recapturing the WBC featherweight belt in 2002. He moved-up again to add the WBC super featherweight title to his growing hardware collection in 2004 and five months later, he took the IBF super featherweight title, and then the IBA super featherweight belt against Pacquiao.

Morales’ victims over the years reads like a Who’s Who list and, in addition to Pacquiao and Barrera, includes Pauli Ayala, Wayne McCullough, Junior Jones, Carlos Hernandez, Jesus Chavez, Guty Espadas, Jr. (twice), Daniel Zaragoza and Kevin Kelly.

“I return with desire to succeed,” Morales said. “My plan is to win my fourth world title. We chose Alfaro as my opponent because he is so respected. It’s true, I had some personal problems, received bad advice and had many temptations. I worked hard on it and now I’m better than before. I feel much better, so we took a risk fighting of Alfaro’s quality.”

Alfaro, who has defeated world champions Prawet Singwancha and DeMarcus Corley, believes it’s his time. “Morales is finished,” he claimed. “His past was great but not now. I’m younger, stronger and faster that him and I will demonstrate that March 27th in Monterrey. Morales is definitely wrong to continue boxing. This is a business and something that gives me a better life. I will come to beat him and will win.”

Garay (32-4, 17 KOs), rated No. 3 by the WBA, is a popular Argentinean who defeated Yuri Barashian by decision for the WBA light heavyweight title in 2008, successfully defended against present WBO Interim champion Juergen Braehmer by decision, and then lost his belt by decision last June to Gabriel Campillo.

Henry (24-2, 19 KOs), fighting out of Houston, is coming off of an explosive victory by sixth-round technical knockout of Shaun George last July on ESPN. Henry has been the NABF, NABA, IBA Inter-Continental and USNBC light heavyweight champion during the past four years.

Two of the premier strawweights in the world throw-down in another 12-rounder, unbeaten WBA champion Roman “Chocolalito” Gonzalez (25-0, 21 KOs), representing Nicaragua, and world rated Mexican contender Juan “Churritos” Hernandez (15-1, 12 KOs).

Former Olympian Rick Hawne grabs hard-fought win at WCF 9

World Championship Fighting action drew another packed house at the Shriner’s Auditorium in Wilmington, Massachusetts Friday night (February 26th). Promoter Joe Cavallaro once again proved why his event is consider among the best on the east coast, putting on a show free from controversy in front of a well-behaved and excited crowd. There were a lot of twists and turns on the night, but little that affected the quality of the event.

Longtime KISS 108 Morning guy Billy Costa subbed-in, taking on the ring announcing duties. Seeming like a veteran of the MMA scene, Costa pulled it off in stellar fashion keeping the fights moving and the crowd energized. Several Boston Celtics were also in-attendance including Glenn Davis and Rajon Rondo. UFC Veteran’s Marcus Davis and Danny Lauzon were also on hand.

With the State of Massachusetts preparing to begin overseeing mixed martial arts as of Monday under the new Massachusetts Athletic Commission, longtime WCF independent official Joe Esposito was also in attendance working his final fight for the organization. Esposito was named as a Commissioner (starting on the 1st), and is expected to fight to carry on the high integrity of the sport. Esposito is a very-well respected martial artist and the announcement of his appointment is being scene as a big win for Mixed Martial Arts.

One change on the night was the last minute canceling of the co-main event involving WEC Veteran Mike Campbell taking on Marc Stevens. Campbell was forced to withdraw with a knee.

The Main Event lived up to the hype, as former Olympian Rick Hawn took on Team Bombsquad’s Tom Gallicchio in a battle that went the distance. Hawn, who trains with Olympic Judo Bronze Medallist Jimmy Pedro and famed UFC coach Mark Dellagrotte of Sityodtong, came ready for a war and that what he got. Gallicchio and Hawn had some heavy first round exchanges of punches and kicks before Hawn got it to the ground with a classic one-arm judo throw. He followed it up with a little ground-and-pound that opened a cut on the top of Gallicchio’s forehead. In round two, a heel trip by Hawn put the action back on the mat, where position transitions along with strikes and a couple attempted submissions highlighted the round. The third round saw an early period of a return of the stand-up battle, before a missed head-kick attempt by Gallicchio allowed Hawn to bring the action back to the ground, where it stayed for the remainder of the fight. Hawn took a unanimous the decision.

The scheduled fight between Renzo Gracie’s John Benoit and Noah Weisman of BJJ Revolution stepped up to the Co-Main Event chair, and delivered the next best action of the night. Benoit, a veteran of the WCF, avoided a near-triangle choke in the first round and maintained top position to control the round. Benoit used a standing kimura in the 2nd to drag the fight back to the ground, cranking hard enough to come close to either a submission or a dislocation of Weisman’s arm. A scramble by Weisman freed the lock, but Benoit maintain top control, on route to a 2nd round unanimous decision win.

WCF ‘forever-fan-favorite’ Dan Bonnell took on Dragon Lair’s Cesario de Souza. An opening accidental headbutt seemed to cause a small cut on Souza and held up the two fighters from engaging for a few seconds. When the action restarted a hard overhand by Bonnell dropped Souza flat on his back. A couple follow-up shots by Benoit was all the ref needed to see to call an end to the fight at just 32 seconds in to round one.
