Rockhold Crushes Bradley, Saffiedine and Medeiros Victorious On SHOWTIME® at STRIKEFORCE’s Birthplace in San Jose

SAN JOSE, Calif. (Feb. 27, 2010) – Before a sold out crowd of 2,322, former ballet dancer turned undefeated professional mixed martial arts (MMA) star Sarah Kaufman (11-0) became the first STRIKEFORCE Women’s Welterweight (135 pounds) Champion in history by powering her way to a five-round unanimous decision over Japan’s Takayo Hashi (12-2) in the STRIKEFORCE Challengers main event at San Jose’s Civic Auditorium on Friday, Feb. 26, on SHOWTIME®.

Luke Rockhold (7-1) continued his climb up the middleweight (185 pounds) ladder with a stunning first-round (2:24) TKO over Paul Bradley (12-2). A middleweight contest between former South African national wrestling champion Trevor Prangley (22-5-1) and France’s Karl Amoussou (11-2-2) ended prematurely after Prangley accidentally poked Amoussou in the eye, leading to a doctor stoppage and technical draw being declared.

From the outset, Kaufman pressed the action with a stiff jab and one-two punch combinations, but was unable to finish Hashi who repeatedly backpedaled her way out of trouble. Kaufman landed her best shots in the first round, dropping Hashi with a straight right hand.

In the third stanza, Kaufman sent Hashi reeling back and nearly put down the Japanese fighter for a second time in the bout with a straight right hand. After a Kaufman jab snapped Hashi’s head back, Hashi responded by shooting for a takedown that Kaufman stuffed.

A chess match ensued for the remainder of the bout. Kaufman continued to score with her hands and right leg kick while Hashi retreated to avoid imminent danger. All three judges scored all five rounds in favor of Kaufman.

In the first round of their much anticipated matchup, Rockhold dropped Bradley with a right hand to the side of the head. Bradley fought his way back to his feet, but Rockhold quickly went on the attack, scoring a head kick and following up with three straight knee strikes to the body.

Badly battered from the series of blows, Bradley turned his back, prompting the referee to immediately stop the action.

As expected, Amoussou came out of the gates firing punches at Prangley, who covered up and countered the Frenchman’s assault with his own hands. Prangley scored a takedown, but was unable to advance his position from half guard.

After the referee stood up the fighters, Prangley, with an open left hand, accidentally poked Amoussou in the right eye. The ringside physician immediately entered the cage and examined Amoussou, who was unable to open his eye, and declared the fighter unable to continue at the 4:14 mark of the first round (According to MMA rules in the state of California, the ringside physician has the discretion to stop a bout in the event that an accidental foul causes an injury).

In other action Yancy Medeiros (5-0) of Waianae, Hawaii dominated Raul Castillo (6-1) at middleweight with continuous flurries throughout the matchup between the unbeaten fighters.

Medeiros stuffed Castillo’s repeated takedown attempts and continued to pour on the punishment with both hands, putting Castillo on the canvas with a right hand in the third round. After an exchange of shots brought the bout to a close, all three judges awarded the fight to Medeiros.

Like Medeiros, Tarec Saffiedine (8-2) maintained an all-out stand up offensive in a welterweight (170 pounds) fight with James Terry (7-2) for three straight rounds, opening a cut on Terry’s lower lip and bringing about a welt under Terry’s left eye.

Terry repeatedly attempted to bring the fight to the mat, but Saffiedine defended the takedowns well and responded with more strikes. After three rounds, Saffiedine was declared a unanimous points winner.

Amongst those in attendance at Civic Auditorium, was MMA’s newest star, football legend Herschel Walker, as well as STRIKEFORCE World Welterweight Champion Nick Diaz, and STRIKEFORCE World Lightweight Champion Gilbert “El Nino” Melendez.

During an interview with STRIKEFORCE Challengers host Mauro Ranallo, Walker said, “(MMA) is the toughest sport there is. To step in the cage and go mano-a-mano, there’s nothing like it. It is the toughest training I’ve ever done.”

Regarding his future in the sport, the 47-year-old Walker said, “I will leave that up to my team at AKA (American Kickboxing Academy, San Jose) when I get back in the gym. We’ll see if they say I am capable of going again. (If they do), we’ll do it again.”

PRINCE ARRON CROWNED PRIZEFIGHTER KING

PRINCE Arron has been crowned the Prizefighter Light-Middleweights Champion.

Arron, 22, clinched the £32,000 top prize with a thrilling victory over Brett Flournoy in the final of Barry Hearn’s latest Prizefighter event at the York Hall in Bethnal Green, east London.

Droylsden-based Arron floored Flournoy in the third round of the final and that proved critical as Arron claimed a unanimous points victory by 29-28, 28-27, 29-28 margins.

Arron, who only made the 11st 2lb weight limit at the second attempt in Thursday’s weigh-in, was the tallest in the competition.

He used his 6ft 3in frame to his advantage with points victories over George Hillyard and former Commonwealth Champion Bradley Pryce in the quarter-final and semi-final respectively.

“I’m over the moon. I came here to win and I’m just buzzing,” said a delighted Arron.

“I boxed George Hillyard’s head off, then I boxed Bradley Pryce’s head off and Brett Flournoy was a bit awkward but I managed to get the knockdown.

“The fight was close at the time but I was just doing enough to steal the rounds landing more jabs and with my good work rate.

“In the third round I stepped up a gear and I wanted to win more than he did.

“With my height and my reach I was made for this competition and the fighters will tell you how awkward I am.

“After beating George Hillyard I was confident but after beating Bradley Pryce I thought to myself ‘I’ve got this won’ as I had just beaten the favourite.

“All respect to Bradley Pryce, he was a really good fighter but maybe he is on his way down and after the first round I was beating him up.

“Winning Prizefighter will give me a big boost and will open doors for me. I’m one of the best light-middleweights in the country and I’ve just proved that tonight.

“People may say I’m tall, gangly and can’t punch but I won my first two fights with one hand. Hearing those criticisms makes me want to prove people wrong and I’ve done that. I’m a good fighter and now everyone will know that.”

Flournoy, who nearly quit the sport a couple of years ago to run a pub in Merseyside, reached the final with triumphs against Danny Butler and Steve O’Meara.

Pryce, the pre-competition betting favourite, had made the semi-final with a hard-fought win over former British Champion Neil Sinclair, while O’Meara defeated Martin Concepcion in the other quarter-final.

Unbeaten prospect Edwin “La Bomba” Rodriguez ready to explode nationally Mar. 19 on ESPN FNF

WORCESTER, Mass. (Feb. 26, 2010) – Highly-touted, undefeated super middleweight prospect Edwin “La Bomba” Rodriguez is preparing for his nationally televised debut March 19 in an 8-round co-feature against veteran George “The Rooster” Armenta on ESPN Friday Night Fights, live from Choctaw Gaming Center in Durant, Oklahoma.

The Dominican Republic-born Rodriguez (13-0, 9 KOs), fighting out of Worcester (MA), was on most 2010 Prospect Watch lists, based on his perfect 5-0 (4 KOs) record last year, as well as his amateur pedigree that includes gold-medal performances in the 2005 USA Boxing National Championships and 2006 U.S. National Golden Gloves Tournament.

“I’m excited to be in my first nationally televised fight,” Rodriguez said. “It’s certainly more of a challenge and pressure, but I’ve always performed better under pressure. It’s time. I want to be impressive in my first nationally televised fight so fans all over can see what type of fighter I am. It’s a very important fight because it’ll also back-up all of the good things written and said about me as a top prospect. I’m ready for the challenge and plan to show everybody that I’m worth the hype.”

“Edwin has received a lot of accolades for being a top prospect and he was a great amateur,” Rodriguez’ manager Larry Army noted. “But after this fight he won’t be flying under the radar anymore. This is a great opportunity to get him where we want him to be, showcasing his talent, nationally. Armenta (13-5, 11 KOs) is battle-tested having knocked out 2000 U.S. Olympian Dante Craig and gone the distance against current WBA light middleweight champion Yuri Foreman and top contender Sechew Powell, who, ironically headlines against Deandre Latimore in a rematch on the Mar. 19th Lou DiBella promoted card.

“Armenta is a tough fighter who keeps coming forward,” Rodriguez added. “He’ll be in tremendous shape and he throws a lot of punches. His ability will help me look good because he’ll bring the best out of me. I’ll b able to really showcase my talent against a solid opponent. Armenta has never been kayoed, so that’s another challenge for me.”

2010 U.S. Grappling World Team set for Grappling Worlds in Poland, March 26-27

USA Grappling has announced its team for the 2010 FILA Grappling World Championships, which will compete in Krakow, Poland, March 26-27.

The U.S. is the reigning World team champions in No-Gi and Gi Grappling for both men and women, which it won in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. in December 2009.

The USA was also the team champions in No-Gi Grappling and Gi Grappling at the 2008 Grappling World Championships held in Lucerne, Switzerland, where the men’s and women’s team scores were combined.

FILA will allow only one athlete per weight class in the 2010 World Championships.

Because of the short time of just over three months between the 2009 World Championships in Florida and the 2010 World Championships in Poland, USA Grappling did not host a qualifying event for the U.S. team. The event was opened to all participants from the 2009 and 2008 World Championships, and spots were available based upon performance. A three-person committee decided any weight classes that did not fit the specific criteria for the team selection.

The U.S. team will be led by USA Grappling National Coach Ricardo Liborio, along with assistant coach Sheldon Marr, who has been a coach for every U.S. Grappling World Team the last three years.

“Our expectations are to be the best team again, to try to win everything again,” said Liborio. “In reality, it was very short notice. We don’t have the time to prepare everybody. It is very close to the last World Championships. It complicated things a little bit. We won’t have a training camp. Some of the athletes have some kind of conflicts and can’t compete. However, we will battle for first place, like we always do, and do the best that we can.”

The U.S. Men’s No-Gi team will feature 2009 Grappling World champions Zachary Makovsky (Philadelphia, Pa./Philadelphia Fight Factory) at 60 kg/132 lbs. and Tom LeCuyer (Plano, Ill./Atlas XT/Torres MA) at 70 kg/154 lbs., along with 2008 Grappling World champion Jeff Monson (Olympia, Wash./American Top Team) at 110 kg/242 lbs.

The team also features 2009 World silver medalists Dennis Prokopos (Milbrae, Calif./10th Planet Jiu Jitsu) at 65 kg/143 lbs. and Mario Rinaldi (Port St. Lucia, Fla./American Top Team) in the Open division.

The U.S. Men’s Gi team is led by 2009 World silver medalist Din Thomas (Coconut Creek, Fla./American Top Team) at 70 kg/154 lbs. Also on the team is 2009 World bronze medalist Brian Mahecha (Coconut Creek, Fla./American Top Team) at 65 kg/143 lbs.

The U.S. No-Gi women’s team will feature 2009 World champions Felicia Oh (Valencia, Calif./Big John McCarthy’s UTA) at 50 kg/110 lbs. and Jessica Aguilar (Coconut Creek, Fla./American Top Team) at 55 kg/121 lbs. Also competing is 2009 World silver medalist Tara LaRosa (Woodstown, N.J./Philadelphia Fight Factory) at 60 kg/132 lbs.

Both Oh and LaRosa will also compete in the Gi division, after winning 2009 World gold medals in the Gi discipline. LaRosa was actually a World champion in Gi in two divisions in 2009, adding the gold medal in the Open division to go with her win at 59 kg.
