Loaded interviews in store as build-up begins

The hype for MFC 24: Heat XC hits tops speed this week as the countdown to fight night ticks down.

On Tuesday, February 23, Maximum Fighting Championship Owner/President Mark Pavelich will join “The Jason Gregor Show” on Team 1260 airing at 5:30 ET/3:30 MT/2:30 PT. The discussion will range from the upcoming fight card featuring the lightweight showdown in the main event pitting Derrick “The Eraser” Noble and “The Texas Gunslinger” Yves Edwards, to what lies ahead for the MFC in 2010 including the move to a new venue, and many other current debates in the world of mixed martial arts. The show will live online at www.team1260.com.

Then on Wednesday, February 24 it’s the press conference at 3 p.m. MT at Centre Bar inside the River Cree Resort and Casino, the host venue for MFC 24: Heat XC. Alongside Pavelich will be the key figures on card including Noble and Edwards, along with light heavyweight rivals David Heath and Dwayne Lewis, and middleweight foes Tom Watson and Travis Galbraith.

Later on Wednesday night at 12:35 a.m. ET/10:35 p.m. MT/9:35 p.m. PT, catch Pavelich alongside Watson and Heath when they go “Inside Sports” with guest host Dave Campbell on 630 CHED. The reputed Englishmen Watson has a bravado that packs as big a wallop as his punches and he’s looking to score a sensational win over home-town product Galbraith. NEW YORK (Feb. 19, 2010) – A winner of four in a row, Shamar Bailey (10-1), of Chicago, will face Justin “The Silverback’’ Wilcox (8-3), of San Jose, Calif., on a stacked STRIKEFORCE Challengers mixed martial arts (MMA) fight card at Save Mart Center in Fresno, Calif., on Friday, March 26.

Bailey is a replacement for Bryan Travers, who withdrew from the fight with a shoulder injury. The three-rounder between the promising prospects will be one of five fights featured on STRIKEFORCE Challengers live on SHOWTIME® (11:45 p.m. ET/ PT, delayed on the West Coast) and will be contested at a catch weight of 160 pounds.

“I think this is a fantastic matchup for me and I am excited about the opportunity to be able to showcase my skills,’’ said Bailey, who won his STRIKEFORCE debut with a unanimous three-round decision over John Kolosci on the undercard of STRIKEFORCE and M-1 Global: Fedor vs. Rogers at Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Ill. on Nov. 7, 2009.

“I have a lot of respect for Justin. I know he’s been winning (Wilcox has won three straight and seven out of eight) and I think we’re both well-rounded fighters with a lot to prove. But I believe that when you have two fighters of equal ability going at it, the bigger guy holds the edge and he is a natural 155-pounder and I fight at 170.

“I am really looking forward to showing off more striking skills than I did in my last fight.’’

In the main event, heavyweight Lavar “Big” Johnson (13-3), of Madera, Calif., takes on unbeaten Lolohea Mahe (4-0-1) of Wailua, Maui, Hawaii. Johnson’s start will be his first since he was nearly shot to death at a family barbeque during the last July 4 holiday.

Other televised fights: “Abongo” Humphrey (5-1), Atlanta, Ga., vs. George Bush III (5-1), Columbus, Ohio, at light heavyweight (205 pounds); Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Luke Stewart (6-2), San Francisco, Calif., vs. Andre Galvao (3-1), Brazil, at welterweight (170 pounds); and undefeated Zoila Frausto (2-0), Fresno, vs. Miesha “Takedown” Tate (7-2), Olympia, Wash., in a women’s scrap at 135 pounds.

Save Mart Center doors will open for the STRIKEFORCE Challengers event at 6 p.m. PT. The first live, non-televised, preliminary bout will begin at 6:45 p.m.

STRIKEFORCE Challengers is a proving ground for up-and-coming MMA fighters. The series is designed to provide today’s top prospects with the opportunity to step-up their level of competition and demonstrate their ability in a nationally televised event.

STRIKEFORCE in March 2009 signed a multi-year agreement to stage live MMA events on premium cable television network SHOWTIME. The promotion made its live, primetime debut on CBS with the “Fedor vs. Rogers” mega-fight that it co-promoted with M-1 Global on

Prizefighter Light-Middleweights Draw – Pryce Faces Sinclair

BRADLEY PRYCE and Neil Sinclair will clash in a mouth-watering quarter-final contest in Prizefighter Light-Middleweights next Friday.

Welshman Pryce, the 5/2 favourite to claim the £32,000 winner’s cheque, was drawn to face experienced Belfast fighter Sinclair in the second of the quarter-finals for the latest Prizefighter event.

Manchester’s highly-fancied Prince Arron, 22, will take on Canning Town’s George Hillyard in the opening contest, with the winner to face Pryce or Sinclair in the semi-finals.

Leicester’s Martin Concepcion would have to reach the final if he was to bid for revenge against Pryce for a defeat in their Commonwealth Championship bout of 2007, after being drawn in the bottom half of the draw to face unbeaten Steve O’Meara in the quarters.

The other bout sees Merseyside’s unbeaten Brett Flournoy drawn against Bristol’s Danny Butler in their opening three-round contest.

The draw was made live on Sky Sports’ Friday Fight Night, which will screen next Friday’s sold-out event live from the York Hall, Bethnal Green, London.

In the main event on SHOWTIME®, undefeated power puncher Sarah Kaufman (10-0) will clash with Japan’s Takayo Hashi (12-1) in the first STRIKEFORCE women’s world welterweight (135 pounds) championship matchup in history. Kaufman, a former professional ballet dancer, has KO’d 8 of her 10 opponents. Hashi is a former champion of Japan’s Smackgirl MMA promotion who has reeled off eight straight victories.

In a middleweight contest, wrestling powerhouse Trevor Prangley (22-5) will take on Karl Amoussou (11-2-1). Prangley, a former national wrestling champion for South Africa, will put a five-fight win streak on the line against Amoussou, who is known for his devastating knockout power and unorthodox fighting style an is on a three-fight win streak.

In one of the evening’s featured fights, Bay Area native Luke Rockhold (6-1), one of MMA’s brightest up and comers, will take on Paul Bradley (12-1) in a middleweight bout.

NY State heavyweight champ Darrel Madison returns

O’Shea Brothers Boxing Mar. 12 in Yonkers

YONKERS, N.Y. (Feb. 19, 2010) – New York State heavyweight champion Darrel “King David” Madison returns March 12 in the main event on the “St. Patty’s Day Brawl” pro boxing card, presented by O’Shea Brothers Boxing Promotions, at the PAL Gym in Yonkers, New York.

Last July, Madison (14-1, 3 KOs) defeated Nagy Aguilera by an 8-round split decision for the New York State heavyweight title. Madison, fighting out of Central Islip (NY), fights an opponent to be determined Mar. 12 in the 8-round headliner, while IBF No. 12 rated Aguilera battles former world champion Samuel Peter the same night in an IBF heavyweight title eliminator in Texas.

“We’re excited to have Darrel Madison, one of the top heavyweight prospects, headlining our next show,” promoter Brian O’Shea explained. “O’Shea Brothers Boxing continues to showcase some of the best local fighters in legitimate fights. We’re old-school and that’s the type fighters we like to showcase.”

Rosedale’s (NY) unbeaten light heavyweight Ronson Frank (13-0, 7 KOs), by way of Guyana, is matched against 33-fight veteran Raynard “Flash” Darden in the 8-round co-feature. Ronson, who recently signed a promotional contract with O’Shea Brothers Boxing Promotions, is the younger brother of former world champions Steve (1984 Olympian) and Raul.

Two special 6-round female featherweight bouts with future title implications are on tap featuring Bronx rivals Maureen “The Real Million Dollar Baby” Shea (13-2, 7 KOs) and Nydia “Da Phnominal” Feliciano (2-0-1, 0 KOs) in separate bouts versus opponents to be determined. At stake in their respective fights is a tentative Shea-Feliciano showdown May 7 for the WBC International featherweight crown, provided both fighters emerge victoriously Mar. 12.

Unbeaten Bronx super middleweight Hajro Sujak (5-0, 2 KOs) fights TBA, while Astoria (NY) light middleweight (by way of Cyprus) Lambros “Lionheart” Karaolides (5-0, 4 KOs) takes on Ashantie “Volcano” Hendrickson (1-5), in a pair of 6-round bouts.

On the undercard in 4-round bouts are Bronx bantamweight Raul Lopez (2-0-1, 2 KOs) meets Jessie Franks (2-6-1, 2 KOs), Manhattan super featherweight Jonathan Cuba (2-1, 2 KO) faces Deroy “Guyanese Gladiator” Beaton (1-1, 0 KOs), and Yonkers featherweight favorite Chazz McDowell (1-0, 1 KO) is scheduled to be in action against an opponent to be determined.

Concepcion ready to show he has the X Factor in Prizefighter

Martin Concepcion is confident he has The X Factor needed to win the Prizefighter Light-Middleweights at the York Hall in Bethnal Green on Friday, February 26.

Concepcion earned his place in the ninth Prizefighter series by out-pointing Kevin Hammond for the Midlands Area Title earlier this month.

Now Leicester’s former Commonwealth light-middleweight champion is looking forward to the chance of potentially settling an old score against Bradley Pryce, who stopped him in three rounds in 2007.

Concepcion, 28, enters the eight-man competition after three fights in four months and feels sharp ahead of his quest to win the £32,000 on offer for the victor of three, three round fights in one night of thrilling boxing.

He said: “I’ve had three fights in three months so I’ll be a lot fresher than some of them who have not fought much recently.

“I’ve fought at a good level and I’ve been busy recently so I’m confident I can go far in the Prizefighter. The format will suit me.

“My last two fights have been ten rounders and I think I’m a bit of a quick starter like when I beat Matthew Hall in a round a couple of years ago.”

Concepcion says like hit TV series X Factor, Prizefighter can make boxers stars.

He said: “I think Prizefighter is brilliant and it’s just what boxing needs. You can get a few bad fights and people want all action these days, right from the start. That’s what Prizefighter gives you.

“You have got The X Factor for singing and it launches stars and this does the same for boxing. Look what it has done for the careers of Martin Rogan, Sam Sexton and now Audley Harrison, who has got a European title fight next.

“Winning this can be a springboard back into title contention. Anthony Small [British & Commonwealth champion] and Ryan Rhodes [European champion] are the ones I want.

“And if I could pick someone who I would meet in the final it would be Bradley. I want to put that right.”

Concepcion has suffered one defeat since losing to Pryce but insists he suffered a raw deal against Dee Mitchell over four rounds last July.

He added: “My fight with Dee Mitchell was not a loss. I fought him on his promoter’s show and I beat him more convincingly than I had done before a year earlier when I won the fight, but didn’t get the decision.”

Flournoy looking to go further than pal Dilks

Brett Flournoy is aiming to go one better than fellow Merseyside boxer Carl Dilks and win the Prizefighter Light-Middleweights at the York Hall in Bethnal Green on Friday, February 26.

The Birkenhead boxer is stepping up from welterweight for his chance to claim the £32,000 prize for winning three, three round fights in one night live on Sky Sports.

Dilks reached the Prizefighter Light-Heavyweights semi-final a year ago and Flournoy hopes to go further than his pal as he attempts to keep his unbeaten record intact with three wins in one night.

But southpaw Flournoy will have to shake off some ring rust when he has his first fight since May 2008.

The 30-year-old’s last bout against Kevin McIntyre was called off in the second round as ringside medics were called away to deal with an injured boxer elsewhere in the arena in October.

Now Flournoy is looking to give his career some much needed momentum before returning to welterweight.

He said: “After seeing what the Prizefighter has done to Carl Dilks’ career, I just wanted to be a part of it. I’ve been mates with him through our amateur days, the Army and we turned pro together.

“Our careers have pretty much mirrored each other, we’ve sparred and it’s like a sibling rivalry we have. It keeps us on our toes and it would be great to go one better than him and get to the final and win it.

“Carl got to the semi-final a year ago in the Prizefighter and after that got a Commonwealth title fight, so I know doing well in this tournament can open doors and that’s why I really wanted the chance.

“I’m doing this to get my career back on track. But I want to go back down to welterweight after this. If the fight against McIntyre would have gone on I’m confident I would have stopped him.”

The 2005 ABA champion left the Army after six years service in 2006 and hopes his success as an amateur will give him an advantage over the shorter three round distance.

He said: “I’m hoping that my amateur experience will help me as well as my speed. There’s a lot of experience in this competition and it’s maybe the toughest line up yet, but I’ve sparred with some tough kids.”

Flournoy’s career suffered while he was concentrating on running a pub, but he has given up his landlord position.

He said: “I’ve been inactive down to myself more than anything else. I had an outside business interest, running The Brown Cow in Bebbington.

“But it was taking up too much of my time and did it for over two years. I just found I couldn’t do the boxing as well as the work and the business wasn’t kicking on.

“I had a few problems while I was a landlord. One night I stopped a couple of police officers getting beaten up but I ended up getting CS gas sprayed in my face! They realised their mistake and apologised.”
