Brown-Grano headlines March 12 show at Foxwoods
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Feb. 18, 2010) – Living legend, Hall of Fame trainer Angelo Dundee will be a special guest at the “Brace For Impact” pro boxing card, presented March 12 by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment & Sports, Inc. (CES), in Fox Theater at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Conn.
The 10-round main event is a rematch between heavyweights Tony “TNT” Grano and Mark “Oak Tree” Brown. Brown (15-2, 7 KOs) overcame two knockdowns to stop Grano (16-1-1, 13 KOs), fighting out of Hartford (CT), in the eighth round of their WBF All-Americas title bout Sept. 27, 2008. Grano is the 2005 U.S. National Championships winner and National Golden Gloves Tournament runner-up, and has won two in a row since suffering his lone loss as a pro to Brown, highlighted by a sensational, nationally-televised knockout of previously-undefeated prospect Travis Kaufman (18-0) last September.
Dundee, 88, was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1994. Best known as head trainer for Muhammad Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard, Dundee also worked the corner for George Foreman, Jose Napoles, Jimmy Ellis, Carmen Basilio and Luis Rodriguez.
“I’m looking forward to being at Foxwoods,” Dundee said. “I go way back with Jimmy Burchfield. When I first go to a city, I always look for a good Italian restaurant, and that’s how I first met Jimmy in Providence at his (former) restaurant (The Classic). I brought Sugar Ray Leonard there. I was in Providence two years ago for an Italian festival and Jimmy brought Vinny Paz and a lot of his good-looking fighters. It takes a lot of guts to promote today and Jimmy Burchfield is the reason boxing is still flourishing up there. He does it the right way with local kids. I’m thrilled to be a guest at his Foxwoods show.”
“My relationship with Angelo goes beyond boxing,” Burchfield noted. “We’re good friends. I don’t know if boxing will ever see anybody like him again in terms of what he did for his fighters. Not only does he know this business inside and out, I think he’s one of the greatest human beings I’ve ever met. My relationship with Sugar Ray Leonard is thanks to Angelo.
“On of my all-time favorite fighters, Willie Pastrano, was trained by Angelo. I’m thrilled to be having my dear friend, Angelo, sitting next to me at ringside on March 12th. He has been as big a personality as his fighters. Angelo never turns down a request from fans for an autograph, or a favor from promoters. His presence at our show will top off a great night.”
Also slated to be in action on “Brace For Impact” are Hartford super bantamweight “Machine” Mike Oliver (22-2, 7 KOs), reigning New England and EBA champion; Marshfield (MA) super middleweight Manuel Antonio Lopes (5-0-1, 1 KO), Long Island (NY) light heavyweight Joe “The Irish Bomber” Smith Jr. (2-0, 2 KOs), 2008 New York Golden Gloves champion; Brooklyn (NY) welterweight Sadam “World Kid” Ali (5-0, 2 KOs), 2008 U.S. Olympian; and Hartford middleweight David Bauza (3-0, 3 KOs). The Brute adidas studios of Takedown Wrestling Radio will once again play host to our annual 3 hour Black History Month Special. In keeping with the goals of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in Stillwater, OK and that of the NCAA our topic this year is Celebrating Diversity in the Sport of Wrestling.

TC Danztler- Dantzler never won a high school state title or NCAA championship. Dantzler has been a regular on the U.S. national team. He first competed in the U.S. Nationals in 1996, finishing 5th, and 10 years later finally won his first national title. In between, he placed third six times and runner-up three times. He defended his title in 2007 and 2008. Dantzler has been the U.S.’s 74kg representative at the world championships every year since 2002 (except 2004; Worlds are not held in Olympic years), with his best finish being 5th in 2006. He won bronze at the 2007 Pan Am Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Bobby Douglas- The Iowa State wrestling program entered a new era when legendary Cyclone head coach Bobby Douglas turned the page in his extraordinary career of achievement, assuming assistant athletics director duties after 14 years as Iowa State’s fifth head coach. Douglas was succeeded by his legendary pupil, Cael Sanderson now Head Coach at Penn State. Douglas continues to command a presence in the wrestling room and as an ambassador for Iowa State, the sport of wrestling. A U.S. coach at several Olympic Games, one of four collegiate coaches to win more than 400 dual meets, Douglas won an NCAA team title at Arizona State. In short, the numbers are astounding: 13 NCAA champions, 110 All-America performances and 68 conference titles. Born in poverty, Douglas rose to the top of the wrestling world. He became the first black Ohio high school state titlist when he captured the 112-pound weight class crown at Bridgeport High School. He wrestled for West Liberty (W.V.) State University and won the NAIA title and was runner-up at the NCAA Championship. After transferring to Oklahoma State, Douglas won the Big Eight Conference 147-pound crown. Mike Allen- Allen grew up in Waterloo, Iowa, and attended East High School where he competed in football and wrestling. He also competed in both sports at Ellsworth Community College (IA) and the University of Northern Iowa. Allen is best known for his 35-year career as a wrestling official. Bubba Jenkins- Jenkins, a former NCAA finalist for Penn State with one year of eligibility remaining in his career. A Native or Virginia Beach, Virginia earned an 81-22 record while competing for Penn State. Jenkins has decided to complete his year of academics at PSU and has asked for and received his release from the team. Where will Jenkins wrestle his senior year? Some are betting AZ State. Maybe he’ll tell us of his plans for the future.
Leigh Jaynes- USA Women’s World Team member at 55 kg/121 lbs. Jaynes, who competes for the New York Athletic Club, is a hopeful for the 2012 Olympic Team, an officer in the U.S. Army Reserves with a graduate college degree and an inspiring story of hope. Leigh Jaynes had to deal with major family crisis from the day she was born. Her father, Clayton Jaynes, was a Vietnam veteran who suffered from post traumatic stress disorder and drug issues. Her mother, Karen Williams, tried to help Clayton, but could not get him the help necessary. Right after Leigh was born, Karen left Clayton to provide her children with a healthier environment. Joining wrestling changed her life and opened a new world of opportunity. However, perhaps the most important thing it did for her was expose her to the wrestling family.
Jordan Burrows- 157 pound Senior for the University of Nebraska from Sicklerville, N.J. Burroughs’ move from 149 to 157 pounds paid off with dramatic results as he went 36-0 last season and became Nebraska’s first undefeated national champion in school history. Coached by Mark Manning, Burrows has applied for a medical RS year to recuperate from season ending injuries. Burrow’s is a Sociology Major at University of Nebraska.
Tyron Woodley- The 11th of 13 children raised mostly by a single mother, Woodley entered the world to an immediate struggle to survive. His father was out of the picture by the time he was 10, leaving his mother to work double and triple shifts in order to keep the family afloat. Woodley oftentimes had to fend for himself. Needs sometimes went unmet. They say iron sharpens iron. He earned two All-American honors and became the University of Missouri’s first Big 12 conference champion. Woodley now has begun a successful in MMA and remains active coaching wrestling.
Dr. Wayne Watson- President of Chicago State University, Chicago, Illinois. As past Chancellor of the City Colleges of Chicago, Wayne D. Watson, PhD was profiled as an Agent of Change. Appointed Chancellor in 1998, he immediately began instituting the changes he saw as needed to achieve the excellence in education he so passionately wanted to bring to Chicago’s diverse community. Prior to his appointment, he served as president of Kennedy-King College and Harold Washington College among others. Dr. Watson was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame / Illinois Chapter and honored as the 2005 Outstanding American at a Honors Banquet held April 3 in Darien, Illinois. Dr. Watson excelled at wrestling as a student at Chicago’s Mt. Carmel High School. Following his graduation in 1964 he was invited to try out for the U.S. Olympic Wrestling Team. Continuing his education at Joliet Junior College, Dr. Watson went on to win a National Junior College Wrestling Championship.
Mo Lawal- The Man who would be “King”. Lawal joins a growing trend of championship-level college wrestlers turning to MMA in order to continue the pursuit of greatness in athletics. The shift from wrestling to MMA came for Lawal after he won the 2008 US Open. Lawal competed for the Cowboys of Oklahoma State in 2003 and finished 3rd at the Nationals that year. Lawal began training at Dan Henderson’s Team Quest in Temecula, Calif.
Phil Davis- Mr. Wonderful? Not to his opponents! Davis is a 2008 NCAA Division I champ for Penn State and After his recent UFC debut the 25-year-old now owns a 5-0 professional record as a light-heavyweight in MMA competition. Before his MMA career, Davis was a four-time NCAA Division I All-American wrestler at Penn State — only the fourth in the school’s 100+ years of intercollegiate wrestling. The native of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, finished his collegiate career with a 116-20 record, two Big Ten titles (in 2006 and 2008), and a national title at 197 pounds in 2008.

Light weight title
The ever smiling Michael Pastou who has gone from strength to strength will have his toughest fight to date when he takes on Stock Broker champion Francis Heagney for the title. It is up for grabs but Heagney is confident that it’s going to stay with him and the London Shoot Fighters camp.
Top respect to Tom Watson for getting his contract with MFC in Canada. With his comment to them that he can’t defend his title, he had no choice but to relinquish it so that Mark Weir and Jack Mason can battle it out for the new Middle Weight Champion. It’s the old legend vs the new hungry kid, a long road for Jack but it’s now finally here.
The fights on this card are amazing. Beverly Knight’s boyfriend, Jamie O’Keefe, steps up for a grudge match against Danny Beevor who says ‘This time Jamie is going to sleep’.
Loaded magazine, Nick Loyde is writing about MMA and is now stepping into the cage to fight a first timer alongside Dave Morton from Men’s Health who is also doing the same. Top respect to both of these guys in their journey of a writer to a fighter.

O’Meara inspired by Mayweather sparring session

Steve O’Meara says he has got nothing to fear ahead of the Prizefighter Light-Middleweights tournament – thanks to a sparring session with Floyd Mayweather Junior.
Unbeaten O’Meara is one of eight boxers who will be trying to win three, three round bouts in one night to pocket the £32,000 prize money at the York Hall in Bethnal Green on Friday, February 26.
O’Meara claims he has been transformed as a fighter since sparring with American Mayweather, a former world champion at five weight divisions.
But the 26-year-old from West Drayton, who has won all of his ten fights since turning professional nearly two years ago, admits he was unhappy with his last fight against Stourbridge’s Kevin McCauley in September immediately after sparring with Mayweather.
O’Meara blames jetlag after getting back from working with Mayweather in Las Vegas on under-performing against McCauley and is determined to show what he has learnt in front of the Sky Sports cameras.
He said: “I sparred with Floyd Mayweather in August and then came back to fight in September, but it was too soon after the flight and I was still jet-lagged when I got in the ring.
“It was great sparring with Floyd. My trainer Jimmy McDonnell set it up over in Las Vegas and the experience was unbelievable. Floyd will be remembered as one of the all time greats and I learnt so much, but it wasn’t easy.
“When I went to touch gloves at the start he banged me and I realised it wasn’t going to be fun and games. But the spar was good and my trainer said I did really well. Afterwards Floyd came over and shook my hand and wished me luck with my career.
“Now it doesn’t matter who I fight they won’t be as good as Floyd Mayweather so that spar gave me a lot of confidence.
“But I probably took me eye off the ball and didn’t give my opponent enough respect when I got back to England that week. The fight was only four days after I got back and I just had no energy and couldn’t do anything.
“Floyd Mayweather didn’t hit me as much as Kevin McCauley did that night so there was definitely something up.
“I can’t complain with how it has gone so far but there’s still a lot to come and I wasn’t happy with my last fight.”
O’Meara, who works as a personal trainer away from the ring, knows one of the other light-middleweights in the knockout tournament as George Hillyard trains at the same gym.
O’Meara, who took up boxing after breaking his leg playing for semi-professional football side Uxbridge as a teenager, sees the Prizefighter as an opportunity to move his career onto the next level.
He said: “This is a chance to get me some great exposure, exposure on one night that I might not have got by boxing in another two years.
“This is a chance to propel me towards bigger titles. I’ve sparred with George Hillyard at my gym (The LA Gym in Loughton) but we haven’t done any ahead of this. We’re mates but if we have to meet it’s business.”
Prizefighter Light-Middleweights takes place at the York Hall, Bethnal Green, London and the full line-up is Prince Arron (Droylsden, Manchester), Danny Butler (Bristol), Martin Concepcion (Leicester), Brett Flournoy (Birkenhead, Merseyside), George Hillyard (Canning Town), Steve O’Meara (West Drayton, Middlesex), Bradley Pryce (Newbridge, Wales) and Neil Sinclair (Belfast).

Prince aiming to be Prize King

Prince Arron is confident his height and reach will see him cause an upset in the Prizefighter Light-Middleweights tournament at the York Hall in Bethnal Green on Friday, February 26.
The Droylsden fighter, whose real name is Arron Jones, is aiming to win three, three round bouts in one thrilling night of boxing and bank the £32,000 prize money live on Sky Sports.
The 22–year-old is one of the underdogs to win the eight-man tournament that features former British and Commonwealth champions.
But he said: “I’m very tall for a light-middle, 6ft 3inches, and I might go up to middleweight when the time is right. My height will be an advantage for this competition.
“As a boxer I’m tall and rangey with fast hands. My height and reach will cause anyone problems. There’s a lot of experienced boxers in this but anything can happen over three rounds.
“I also think the three round format will help me because I like to box. I’m not long out the amateurs and that could also help. I’ve got a good jab and I’m going to use it.”
Arron, who only had 12 amateur bouts before turning pro in 2006, rates his best moment in boxing so far as his British Masters Middleweight Title triumph over Peterborough’s Cello Renda after ten rounds in 2007.
Renda went on to reach the Prizefighter Middleweight final in 2008 and Arron is taking confidence from that win ahead of his own Prizefighter campaign.
He said: “It was great for me to beat Renda when I was 19 and a natural light-middle fighting a middleweight. Cello went on to reach the Prizefighter final and then won an eliminator for the British title last year, so my win over him shows what I’m capable of. He probably only won two rounds of our fight but he then nearly won the Prizefighter.
“I’ve had a couple ups and downs in my career but since moving to trainer Bob Shannon it has been like a new lease of life for me.”
Arron hopes a good display in the Prizefighter will set up a rematch with Birmingham’s Max Maxwell after being left unhappy with a draw in December.
He said: ” I got robbed against Max Maxwell. It was never a draw.”

RENO XTREME FIGHTS III – MARCH 19TH

Reno — The Grand Sierra Resort/Casino and Let’s Get It On Promotions are pleased to announce “Reno Xtreme Fights III”, March 19th. Tickets are on sale.
This will be the third installment of the successful professional boxing/mma series and will feature top prospects. Boxers slated to fight on the card are Brandon “Flawless” Gonzales (10-0, 9 KOs), Karim “Hard Hitta” Mayfield (11-0, 7 KOs) and Omar Zalivdar (pro debut). Mixed martial Arts fighters currently slated are Reno’s own Rick “The Holy Terror” Reeves, Buddy Roberts, and Joshua Turner.
Gonzales, from Sacramento, CA, has made a splash in his last two appearances on Reno Xtreme Fights I and II by knocking out Victor Villereal and Dewey Welliver. He is making the step up to his first scheduled eight rounder for the evening’s feature boxing event. His opponent will be announced shortly.
Mayfield, a popular welterweight prospect from San Francisco, CA, is coming off of an impressive fifth round knockout over Francisco Santana last November in Oakland. He is looking to keep his undefeated status in a six round bout against Jason Davis (11-5, 3 KOs) from Vancouver, WA.
Zalvidar, from Reno, NV, will be making his pro debut on RXF III. He has already developed a following in Northern Nevada’s Hispanic community through his amateur career. With his stablemates Carlos Gaytan and Johnny Mancilla, Zalvidar continues a long tradition of Mexican and Mexican-American boxing in Reno.
Reeves (9-3) will be fighting in the feature MMA event on March 19th against his toughest foe yet in Derrick Burnsed from Northern California. Burnsed is undefeated in five fights. Reeves is coming off of a submission victory against Donnie Evenson last October.
Buddy Roberts returns to Reno Xtreme Fights after a dominating first round TKO over Alijah Reni in December. Roberts’ opponent is yet to be determined.
