Fast-paced lightweights top MFC 24 card: Noble aiming to erase ‘The Gunslinger’

An expected intense showdown between two veteran lightweights will headline the card set for MFC 24: Heat XC on Friday, February 26.
Onetime MFC lightweight title challenger Derrick “The Eraser” Noble (25-12-1) will look to get back into 155-pound championship picture when he takes on “The Texas Gunslinger” Yves Edwards (36-15-1) in a clash that will top the lineup of fights at the River Cree Resort and Casino just outside Edmonton, Alberta.
Both fighters are known for putting a exclamation point on the fights. In his 25 victories, Nobles has 19 stoppages – nine by knockout and another 10 by submission including his somewhat surprising second-round guillotine choke win over jiu-jitsu practitioner Ariel Sexton at MFC 19. Edwards, meanwhile, has ended 29 of his 36 wins inside the distance – 14 by knockout and 15 by submission with his most-recent verdict being a first-round TKO of Kyle Jensen.
“This year, I’ve made it clear to the fighters in our organization that I want them to be exciting, get the crowd out their seats, and end fights in style,” noted MFC Owner/President Mark Pavelich. “Derrick and Yves are the kind of fighters that won’t sit back, they won’t lay around, and they won’t be looking to drag things out.
“Both of them know how important this fight is to their respective careers and they are both well aware what lies ahead for them with an impressive win. They won’t be hoping to win by lame decision. They both want a big, convincing victory.”
Noble is eager to put his last MFC outing behind him. The Cuba, Illinois, native couldn’t pull the trigger enough times in his encounter with Antonio McKee, resulting in McKee being awarded a five-round decision and the MFC lightweight belt.
“I expect this fight with Yves to be full of fireworks and to be completely different from my last MFC fight,” said Noble. “Putting Yves and myself in the ring together is a fight the fans are going to enjoy.
“I’m really excited about this fight. Fighting guys like Yves is what my entire career has been about. I always fight tough guys and have never turned down a fight, so as soon as I was offered the fight it took me all of 10 second to say yes. I’m looking to get back to the top and Yves is a good way to make that happen.
“It’s a dangerous fight for both of us. I’ve fought good strikers so I know how to deal with that. I respect Yves and what he has accomplished but come February 26th I’ll be looking to take him out just like anybody else.”
Noble has won two straight since falling to McKee and holds career victories over such notables as MFC welterweight champ Pat Healy, Thiago Alves, and Jake Ellenberger.
Edwards, too, is no stranger to big-name fights as his career resume reads like a who’s who of opponents. A winner of five of his last seven fights, the Woodlands, Texas, product has beaten the likes of Hermes Franca, Rich Clementi, Pete Spratt, Thomas Denny, and Dokonjonosuke Mishima during his career. The 33-year-old has also been in against a long list of notables such as Joe Stevenson, Matt Serra, and Nate Marquardt.
The Noble-Edwards encounter highlights the MFC 24 card which includes two light heavyweight clashes pitting Dwayne Lewis against David Heath, and Nick Penner against Chris Price, along with a middleweight tussle between Tom Watson and Travis Galbraith.

Ruiz goes back to Boston roots

BOSTON (Jan. 16, 2010) – Two-time WBA heavyweight champion John “The Quietman” Ruiz has returned to his roots in Boston for what will most likely be the last visit before his 12th world title fight, against new WBA title-holder David “Hayemaker” Haye, sometime in April or May.
An official announcement of the date and venue for Haye-Ruiz will reportedly be made very soon. Ruiz (44-8-1, 30 KOs), who recently inked a deal with Oscar de la Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions, is the WBA No. 1 contender as well as the first and only world heavyweight champion of Latino heritage.
Ruiz’ 10-day stay in Boston, which borders the city of Chelsea where John was raised, includes a guest appearance Tuesday night at the Muscle Team 2010 fundraiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, open workout for the public and media Wednesday (4-6 PM/ET) at the South Boston Boxing Club, and invitation to attend Friday night’s “Boston Pop” pro boxing card at The Roxy in Boston’s famed Theater District from promoter Jimmy Burchfield (Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc.).
“I always love going home to see my family, friends and fans,” Ruiz said. “No matter where I may live or train, I’m a big Boston sports fan and follow all of the local teams. Boston is where it all started for me and this will probably be my last opportunity to be there before I go into deep training for my title fight against Haye. I’m going to bring the WBA belt back to the United States where it belongs and I promise to showcase it once again in Boston.
“I’m really looking forward to the MDA fundraiser because it’s for such a good cause. If my being there helps just one sick child, it’s certainly something I’ll enjoy. My open workout will give fans and the media a chance to watch me train in the gym – hit the mitts, speed and heavy bags, shadow box, jump rope, etc. I enjoy supporting local shows and fighters, so it’s going to be fun attending the CES show at The Roxy, where I fought a long time ago (three times in 1996).”

Cestus Management’s welterweight destroyer Rodolfo “LA COBRITA” Gomez impressed the three thousand charged fans in attendance at the Laredo Entertainment Center in Laredo, Texas, with an impressive display of power and speed as he disposed of Oscar Roville with vicious efficiency. The fight was part of an ESPN 2 Friday Night Fights undercard. Gomez, who is a native of Laredo, improved to 6-0 and continued his march up the boxing latter.
Gina Iacovou, who is Cestus’ CEO, said, “It was great to get Rudy (Gomez) back in the ring. He continues to get experience as a professional boxer and his natural strength, size, and boxing aptitude are exciting to watch in action. 2010 is going to be the year of the BABY COBRA!”

VASQUEZ AND EVANS SCORE SENSATIONAL KNOCKOUTS AT THE ARENA IN PHILADELPHIA

PHILADELPHIA (JANUARY 16, 2009)—Victor Vasquez and Coy Evans thrilled a near capacity crowd at The Arena in Philadelphia as they scored thrilling knockouts that highlighted a five bout card that was promoted by Greg Robinson’s Productions in association with Unleashed Beverage Company.
Vasquez and Gustavo Dailey waged a six round Lightweight war in what was the main event of the evening.
Dailey came out firing and landed some hard wining shots for which Vasquez was successful in countering and the two way battle was on from the outset of the fight. The two stood toe to toe as they exchanged being the boss for moments of a time.
Vasquez had his usual rabid cheering section helping pull through some of the tough moments but he seemed to turn the tide in round five as he landed some big right hands. In round six with the two in close, landed hard uppercuts that sent Dailey into the corner and Vasquez landed a barrage of punches that forced referee Hurley McCall to stop the bout at 2:05 of the final round as Vasquez rose his record to 11-3 with six knockouts.
Evans scored his first knockout while remaining undefeated at 6-0-1 as he took care of Vineash Rungea at 2:19 of round two of a scheduled four round Featherweight bout.
Evans dropped Rungea early in the second frame with a a quick right and shortly after landed a booming right hand that sent Rungea down again and hurt as his corner threw in the towel, saving their man from any further damage.
In an all Philadelphia Light Heavyweight bout, Tony Ferrante won a controversial split decision over Andre Hemphill in a six round bout.
Super Middleweight Tommie “Big Poppa” Speller and Middleweight Derrick Webster also scored victories
