Daniel “The Haitian Sensation” Edouard requests assistance for Haiti

We have all been made aware of the devastating earthquake that has recently shattered the social fabric of Haiti. Reports coming out of the country confirm that tens of thousands of people are either reported deceased or severely injured. Thousands are unaccounted for. Hospitals are without electricity. Schools and orphanages lay in ruins. Portions of my family and friends who still reside on the island have been and are continuing to be affected daily as virtually the entire country is without power, water, food and basic necessities. There is a lot to be done and a lot that is needed.
As a Haitian American and the current Vice President of the Haitian Boxing Federation I feel a deep sense of obligation to help immediately. We can all help. Governments around the world are extending aide to Haiti, still, it will be some time before a lot of the aide makes its way into certain parts of the country. I know these areas and I know the people that live in these areas. The entire country is need but in many areas, those typically undersupplied, the need will be great. This is where I intend to focus my efforts. I plan on doing everything I can to help including travelling to Haiti and working ground level in the assist efforts.
To do more I need your help. I have teamed up with two Haitian icons (legendary kompa singer Sweet Micky and international telecommunication company NoPIN) and have worked diligently with non-for-profit organization Grace for the Sharing to establish an account for donations with Wachovia Bank. Lauzon eyes UFC debut in Boston

LAS VEGAS (Jan. 15, 2010) – Despite losing a decision January 2 to Sam Stout, popular lightweight Joe “J-Lau” Lauzon (18-5, 5 [T]KOs, 13 submissions) hopes that his next fight will be this August in UFC’s debut in Boston.
Lauzon, a native of E. Bridgewater (MA), would certainly be a hometown favorite fighting at the Boston Garden. “We’ll see how it goes but I certainly want to fight at home in Boston,” Lauzon said. “I’d like to fight before that, where my fight against Stout was my first in 10 months, but not if it risks fighting in Boston this August.”
Sidelined for 10 months after undergoing knee surgery to repair his ACL, Lauzon re-entered the Octagon against Stout in Las Vegas, participating in the UFC 108 Pay-per-view “Fight of the Night.”
“I’m obviously disappointed in the result,” the star of The Ultimate Fighter 5 television reality show said. “It was an entertaining fight, but that’s not what I want to be known for. I focused on the health of my knee and it held up. I didn’t concentrate on my overall condition and I was a little rusty. I trained like a maniac six days of the week, twice a day, and then I couldn’t do too much for six months (due to his knee surgery).
“I definitely thought I had Stout in the first round but he had other plans. I felt his shoulder pop and I really thought that I had him. I guess it wasn’t meant to be. I expected him to be tough. His takedown defense was better than I thought. I thought I’d have an easier time on the ground, too. He came to fight with a perfect game plan. Give him credit for a good fight. I’d like to fight him in a rematch but, then again, I’d like to fight anybody I’ve lost to but that doesn’t happen very often and is out of my control.”
The 25-year-old from Massachusetts, who has a computer networking degree from Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, came out of his fight against Stout a little sore and sporting a black eye. He’s already back training at his gym, Lauzon MMA in Bridgewater.
“I really want to fight on the first UFC show in Boston,” Lauzon concluded. “It’s a natural and would be a dream come true for me.”

Michael Oliveira Brazilian Athlete of the Year Candidate

MIAMI (Jan. 15, 2010) – Unbeaten middleweight sensation, “Chairman of the Board” Michael Oliveira (11-0, 9 KOs), is an official candidate for the Brazilian International Press Award’s 2009 Athlete of the Year Award.
The 19-year-old Oliveira, living in Miami and attending Miami Dade Community College, is the heir apparent to retired Acelino “Popo” Freitas in Brazilian boxing circles. Oliveira is one of only 10 Brazilian Athlete of the Year candidates, along with the likes of Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves, as well as NBA players Nene Hilario and Anderson Varejao.
“I’m honored to be a candidate for this prestigious award with nine other great athletes,” Oliveira said. “Hopefully, my fans will support me by voting. More importantly, though, my last fight was in Haiti and I met a lot of the Brazilian peace-keeping troops stationed there. I am dedicating my next fight to the Brazilian solders that lost their lives in the recent earthquake in Haiti. My thoughts and prayers are with them and their families.
The hard-punching teenager, who is the reigning UNBC Latin champion, won each of his eight fights last year, including his last December 18, when he stopped Eduardo Mercedes (5-2) in the second round of their bout in Haiti.

“Inside MMA” Goes LIVE this Weekend from the University of Iowa

DALLAS (January 14, 2010) – This Friday, HDNet’s “Inside MMA” is live from Iowa City, home of the Iowa Hawkeyes, to preview one of the biggest NCAA wrestling duals of the year between two college powerhouses – the #1 ranked University of Iowa and #3 Oklahoma State.
HDNet has also arranged an hour-long “meet and greet” with Kenny Rice, Bas Rutten and Guy Mezger. Fans can meet the stars of “Inside MMA” from 6:00 to 7:00 pm CT on Friday, January 15 at the University of Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame building, located at 2425 Prairie Meadow Drive in Iowa City.

Second Annual Masters Clinic and Show Feb. 18-20, 2010

Call or email the gym if you plan on attending this year’s clinic. Call or email the gym if you plan on participating in the Master’s Boxing Show. You do not have to attend the clinic to box on the show. We are starting to make arrangements and match-ups and need to know the number of participants.
Gleason’s Gym will host it’s second annual Masters Clinic and boxing show February 18-20,2010.
Thursday morning will be the arrival into New York. Orientation will be from 12:00 noon to 1:oo pm. The first workout will be from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. A discussion on Masters boxing will be from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm. Free time after that.
Friday morning will have training from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon. The afternoon session will run from 2 pm to 4:00 pm. A discussion on Amateur boxing and White Collar boxing will be from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm. Free time after that.
Saturday morning will have light training from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon. Match ups for the evening show will take place from 12:00 noon to 1:00 pm. An optional workout for those not competing in the evening show from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. The weigh in for the show will be from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm. The sanctioned Master Boxing Show will begin at 7:00 pm and will end by 10:00 pm.
The cost of the Clinic is $299.00.

HARRISON WITHIN TOUCHING DISTANCE OF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP DREAM

Prizefighter Champ Audley signs with Matchroom and gets European title shot
PRIZEFIGHTER Champion Audley Harrison has vowed to ‘gatecrash the boxing big-time’ by winning the European Heavyweight Championship in April.
Harrison, 38, saved his career by triumphing in Prizefighter Heavyweights 3 in October and will now meet Poland’s Albert Sosnowski for the European belt.
Former Olympic Gold medalist Harrison hopes the fight, scheduled for April 9 at London’s Alexandra Palace, leads to a shot at World title.
“Albert Sosnowski represents a difficult challenge for me and I know he wants to keep his crown he won in December against Paolo Vidoz,” said Harrison.
“I was impressed by Sosnowski’s fitness and pressure. I’ll need to be at the top of my game if I’m to be successful.
“He’s only lost twice before in 48 fights, but that tells me he can be beaten.
“I have enough time to get my preparations right; no excuses, this is it! I will be giving it my all to rip away the European title and gatecrash the big-time.
“David Haye and the Klitschko brothers will be within my sights if I can get a victory and that’s enough motivation for me to lay it all on the line.
“I am so happy to have agreed terms with Matchroom Sport and truly feel this opportunity will lead me to a World title this year.
“They have done everything they said they would do and that’s a rare commodity with promoters within this industry.”
Harrison’s career appeared to be over in December 2008 with a shock defeat against Martin Rogan but Harrison, who won an Olympic gold in 2000, responded in fine style.
He claimed impressive victories over Scott Belshaw and previously-undefeated duo Danny Hughes and Coleman Barrett to win Prizefighter.
“Forget the past, the dream is still very much alive for Audley,” commented Matchroom Sport Managing Director Eddie Hearn.
“When I first met with Audley in Vegas last Summer I told him a win at Prizefighter would put him back in line for a shot at the big-time. Prizefighter was a big gamble and he showed plenty of bottle and quality to get the job done.
“Albert represents a tough challenge but the winner puts himself right in line for a World title shot – and who could rule out an all British battle with David Haye if Audley can produce the goods in April.”
Sosnowski, who is based in Brentwood, Essex, but originally hails from Warsaw, Poland, claimed the title with an emphatic points victory over Italian Paolo Vidoz in December.
However, 30-year-old Sosnowski is best known for a shock stoppage win in 2008 over Harrison’s long-term rival Danny Williams, the current British Champion and promises to bring with him an army of Polish supporters for the fight.
