Wilson Gouveia’s Move to MFC is a “Big Deal”

American Top Team’s Wilson Gouveia (12-7) has inked a big return to mixed martial arts. Monday he signed a multi-fight deal with Maximum Fighting Championship and will fight Canadian star “Big Deal” Ryan Jimmo (12-1) at MFC 25: Vindication at the Winspear Centre/Enmax Hall in Edmonton, Alberta April 9.
Wednesday, Gouveia told MaximumFighting.com, “I’m excited! I have friends that fight for MFC and they all tell me good things.”
The event will broadcast live on HDNet and feature a soon to be announced major title fight.
The matchup marks Gouveia’s return to 205 pounds after a disastrous stint fighting at middleweight. The Brazilian lost consecutive stoppages to Nate “The Great” Marquardt (29-8-2) and Alan “The Talent” Belcher (15-6) at 185 pounds, missed weight by three pounds before a victory over fellow MFC fighter “The Athlete” Jason MacDonald (22-13), and won his middleweight debut over Ryan Jensen (14-6).
Gouveia moved to middleweight because he thought he’d be one of the bigger guys in that division, but never wore 185 pounds confidently. He looked gaunt at weigh-ins and fought with diminished ferociousness.
“It was too much sacrifice and too hard, man,” said Gouveia about his time at middleweight. “I’m a professional. I do this for a living and I love it, but I don’t like to miss weight, you know? And, I would pass out in the sauna and guys would drag me out and say, ‘You have to stop this.’ It was just too much sacrifice and too hard on my body.”
At light heavyweight, however, Gouveia bulldozed through four consecutive stoppage victories over “Soldier” Wes Combs (14-4), Kimbo Slice-killer “Silverback” Seth Petruzelli (11-4), “Fury” Carmelo Marrero (10-4), and “Punisher” Jason Lambert (23-11).
“I hope the fans will see that I’m a better, more exciting fighter at 205 pounds,” said Gouveia.
But, Gouveia will have a big challenge in “Big Deal” Ryan Jimmo, who is on a 12-fight winning streak dating back to April 2007. Jimmo returned to MFC in May 2009 and has racked up three decision victories over Mychal Clark (6-9) and veteran fighters “The Beastman” Marvin Eastman (16-12-1) and “The Hardcore Kid” Emanuel Newton (12-6-1).
Jimmo is peaking! Like the world’s top light heavyweight “The Dragon” Lyoto Machida (16-0), Jimmo has transitioned a traditional karate background into success in MMA:
“My karate training has taught me not so much the fighting techniques but great discipline, focus and work ethic,” Jimmo explains. “It’s taught me to understand a system of fighting and understand how to learn it in a more efficient manner. The athleticism and physicality are great attributes. I found my kicks are a step above most MMA practitioners as well as my footwork. There are two sides to most karate systems, traditional and sport and both have attributes that warrant praise. My time in karate has been invaluable in my life and I wouldn’t be the person I am today without it.”
Gouveia told MFC.com about his opponent, “I don’t know much about him. I know he’s a big, muscle guy and he’s a good guy. His record shows that. But, I train with some big guys: Luiz Cane, Thiago Silva, ‘Big Foot’ Antonio Silva. These are strong guys.” Gouveia added, “I haven’t fought a karate guy since Seth Petruzelli. He liked to show a karate stance too.”
Of course, Gouveia submitted Petruzelli in a guillotine choke, but Jimmo has never been submitted. There’ll be a lot on the line when these two fighters matchup at MFC 25: Vindication at the Winspear Centre/Enmax Hall in Edmonton, Alberta April 9.

Brockton – On The Mark & Televisual Productions present an advance screening of the documentary A Father’s Fight starring Mark Chaupetta on Friday night January 22nd at The Shaws Center. The movie was co-directed by Peter Czymbor and Ron Van Dam.
Only 100 tickets will be released to the public. A suggested donation is $30 and all proceeds go towards fighting Duchene’s Muscular Dystrophy.
The movie follows Chaupetta around as he prepares for a Mixed Martial Arts fight to take place in his hometown of Brockton. Chaupetta, a father of twin boys who suffer from Duchene’s M.D., fights for the purpose of raising money & awareness to help find a cure for the terminal illness that his boys suffer from. All the while using MMA as an escape from the stress of everyday life caring for two children confined to a wheelchair due to their ailment.
Throughout the movie, Chaupetta trains & gets advice from several notable MMA fighters including former UFC light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin, UFC lightweight contender & Bridgewater native Joe Lauzon and former Cage Fury Fighting welterweight Champion & Stoughton resident Mike Varner.
He also hears the thoughts & opinions of several friends and professionals, including his children’s neurologist, who tell him not to go through with the fight for fear he could injure himself and not be able to properly care for his kids.
Following the screening of the movie, Canadian pop duo Carmen & Camille, whose songs appear in the documentary, will perform a set of songs featured in the movie. Their music has also appeared in the hit MTV show The Hills.

Mark Chaupetta is father of 4 and local Private Investigator who trains as a part time MMA fighter. Chaupetta is the subject of A Father’s Fight. Previously, he’s hosted a radio show on WXBR 1460-AM in Brockton and ran for state representative for the 10th Plymouth District in Massachusetts. He is very active in charitable causes relating to Duchene’s muscular dystrophy.

LOS ANGELES, January 13 – Former Cuban amateur star Erislandy Lara has made his mark in the professional ranks with the same speed and impact that his blistering combinations make on his opponents, and after just nine fights, he appears to be ready to graduate to the next level. On Friday, January 29, the undefeated rising star will be featured in a 10-round junior middleweight bout that will push Lara to the limit as he takes on 154-pound standout and the winner of the second season of “The Contender,” Grady Brewer. Lundy predicts 3rd-round KO vs. Abril in Boston battle of promising prospects Jan. 22 at The Roxy

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Jan. 13, 2010) – Exciting Philadelphia junior welterweight “Hammerin’” Hank Lundy has predicted an impressive win by 3rd-round knockout against fellow hot prospect, Richard “El Tigre” Abril, in the 10-round “Boston Pop” headliner Jan. 22 at The Roxy in Boston’s famed Theater District.
Lundy, one of the brightest prospects in boxing, stunned Mexican veteran Aldo Valtierra (25-12), who boasts a win against world-rated Jorge Teron, with a first-round knockout in his last fight on Halloween night. The entertaining, highly-revved Philly boxer also stopped previously-unbeaten Jason Cintron (11-1) in the fifth round last year.
Abril (12-1, 6 KOs), a former Cuban amateur standout now fighting out of Miami, replaced Brad Solomon. Abril’s lone loss was by a 10-round split decision to Breidis Prescott, who in his following fight knocked out rising star Amir Khan in the opening round.
“The change of opponents doesn’t bother me because they’re almost the same height,” Lundy explained. “This guy (Abril) doesn’t get off as well as Solomon and I think this is an easier fight for me. He isn’t as active as Solomon. He’s slow and doesn’t use his jab. I’m going to take care of business. Abril is a good fighter. He’s coming to fight and I think it’ll be a great fight while it lasts. I’m going to use my jab, work the body, break him down and I should take him out by the third round. I’m excited to be fighting in Boston for the first time and I’m bringing a Philly style of fighting there.”
The 6-round co-feature matches intra-state rivals Chris Traietti (8-1, 5 KOs), an Iraq War veteran from Quincy, and dangerous Lawrence super middleweight Eddie “Thunder” Caminero (5-3, 5 KOs).

Michael Lohan to Step Into Boxing Ring, Eyes Jon Gosselin

(Essington, PA) – Michael Lohan wants a piece of Jon Gosselin and isn’t afraid to let everyone know it. But there’s a hurdle still left to clear.
Lohan, father of tabloid queen Lindsay Lohan, will headline Celebrity Boxing 16: Nothing
Personal as he takes on up-and-coming actor Bobby Dolan in the ring on Friday, January 15 in Essington.
“I want Gosselin, and that’s a quote,” Lohan says of the Reality star formerly from the show “Jon and Kate Plus 8.”
The bad blood between Lohan and Gosselin stems from Lohan dating one of Gosselin’s ex-girlfriends, former tabloid reporter Kate Major, last summer.
If Lohan defeats Dolan, it sets up a match between Lohan and Gosselin. Lohan publicly challenged Gosselin at a press conference recently.
“Jon’s been talking a lot of trash about me,” Lohan says. “So I figure it’s time for him to back it up.”
Lohan has reportedly even offered up $120,000 via Frankie’s Steaks in Milmont Park, PA for a winner-take-all boxing match with Gosselin.
There will be a contract awaiting Gosselin if he shows. He has been offered to come to the event from CBF President Damon Feldman. Lohan must win the match on Friday but the contract will be there for Jon Gosselin to sign before the Main Event.
As for Dolan, an aspiring actor who was a finalist for “Real World: Philadelphia,” reports are that he looks at the match with Lohan as a way to date the latter’s famous daughter.
“I’m not worried about Dolan,” Lohan says of the Drexel Hill, PA native. “I’ll take him. It’s Jon who I want.”
Lohan and Dolan will square off at the Airport Ramada in Essington on Friday, January 15 at 8:30 p.m.
Also appearing as a guest live event host will be former Philadelphia Eagles cheerleader Amanda Narcise, fresh off her appearance on “Reality Obsessed,” Canada’s most popular reality TV series. Narcise also looked for Paris Hilton’s friendship on MTV’s “Paris Hilton’s ‘My New BFF2’.”

DeJesus ready to face Phan

Lemoore, Calif. – From the back alleys and rented out homes, to the bright lights of the Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino when Isaac DeJesus reflects on his mixed martial arts journey he can’t help but be a little humble.
“Honestly, I’m just very honored to be fighting at Tachi. It’s a place that’s rich with MMA tradition and a place that since day one I had always wanted to fight at,” said DeJesus who puts his 8-1 record on the line against Westminister, Calif.’s Nam Phan (15-6) on Thursday, February 4 for the Tachi Palace Fights World Featherweight title.
“I’ve really always wanted to fight there since back when the WEC was there. I’m just happy to be fighting out there for a great promotion,” DeJesus added.
It took some time for DeJesus to fulfill some of his MMA aspirations, though. He began his career fighting in underground fights in shady places with some shady characters, but has since blossomed under the tutelage of Team Buhawe in Fresno.
“I was kind of pushed into MMA. I hooked up with a kickboxing coach and did some of the underground stuff he was doing in some private locations,” DeJesus said. “I even fought Dominique Robinson I think in my last fight like that and then I hooked up with a manager that had some Strikeforce fighters and I turned pro.”
DeJesus was just 17-years-old when he made his MMA debut, a victory that is not reflected on his Sherdog.com record.
“I wasn’t really ready for it, but I won. It doesn’t show up on Sherdog, it wasn’t a sanctioned fight. It was just something I did out at one of the casinos on the reservation,” DeJesus said. “Then I started with Global Knockouts and a few years later I came to train in Fresno with Buhawe.”
The turnaround in DeJesus’ career came on May 9, 2008 at the Memorial Civic Auditorium in Stockton, Calif. DeJesus won a split decision over Cruz Gomez (12-8), but it was an earlier fight on the card with Fresno, Calif.’s Brandon Cash (5-1) that proved pivotal.
Cash was picking up his first professional victory and being cornered by Team Buhawe head coach Jasper Tabaya, who later reached out to DeJesus and asked him to join the team.
“Jasper and those guys saw I had 450 people out there for my fight and saw my skills and asked if I wanted to come down to Fresno and train. I came down here and they offered to train me for free and here I am today,” DeJesus said.
This isn’t the first time that DeJesus has fought for gold, as he lost by technical knockout to Brandon Visher (13-0) in Hawaii in September 2009.
“I still haven’t even been fully paid for that fight. It just didn’t feel right out there,” DeJesus said. “This time I get to fight in front of my friends and family.”
And much like the last time against another up-and-coming star in the sport. Phan is a Strikeforce and Sengoku vet and one of more exciting fighters out of California.
“I really don’t know too much about him. I know he fought Billy (Evangelista) tough and he’s well-known,” DeJesus said.
And speaking of Evangelista, the undefeated phenom out of Fresno is one of DeJesus’ main sparring partners.
“The team is pretty well known. It was pretty well known when I came out here with guys like Billy, Jorge (Evangelista), Lavar (Johnson), Art (Arciniega), John Reedy and Zoila (Frausto),” DeJesus said. “There were a lot bigger names than me and I’ve really gotten to see where I am at as a fighter training with those guys. Now after a few fights with the team, I’m starting to make a name for myself and helping the Buhawe name at the same time.”
Phan also carries a big name and has fought a who’s who in the MMA world.
“I don’t know too much about (DeJesus). He looks very strong on tape and kicks real hard and I think he has some pretty decent jiu-jitsu,” Phan said. “He’s a good tricky, crafty kid. I think fans can expect a lot of haymakers and a lot of punches.”

Tachi Palace Fights will be the site for the return on Chico, Calif. bantamweight Manny Tapia (10-3-1) and Norwalk, Calif. middleweight Hector Ramirez (8-3-1). Tapia takes on a young and up-and-coming striker from Oakdale, Calif. Michael McDonald (8-1) and Ramirez will meet a seasoned veteran from Coarsegold, Calif. Anthony Ruiz (23-13).
Also, in action is David Bollea the nephew of professional wrestling superstar Hulk Hogan. Bollea (1-0), much like his uncle, is a grappling standout and trains in Las Vegas, Nev. at Cobra Kai.
