REES CLAIMS PRIZEFIGHTER TITLE

FORMER WBA World Champion Gavin Rees is the Prizefighter Light-Welterweights Champion.

Rees, 29, claimed the title with a unanimous points decision victory over Colin Lynes in a thrilling final at the National Hall in London’s Olympia.

The Prizefighter trophy was presented to Rees by former undisputed super-middleweight World Champion Joe Calzaghe, who, ironically, trains at the same gym as Rees.

“To be honest, winning this feels better than winning the world title,” admitted Rees. “I’ve been out of the limelight for so long and no one expected me to win a world title but absolutely no one thought I would win this.

“I’ve definitely had a point to prove as a lot of people on all the forums have said I wasn’t big enough and wasn’t good enough to win it.

“It was tough as I was boxing boys a lot bigger than me. I was boxing at 10st 3lb when I normally box at 9st 9lb.

“It was a cracking last fight and I thought it was really close. He was hitting me on the chin and I was seeing stars and wondering what’s happening. But I still knew I had done enough to win it.”

Rees looked in top form throughout the evening and he began by dismantling former European Champion Ted Bami with relative ease in the quarter-final, winning on points as all three judges gave him every round.

Welshman Rees continued to look a class act in his semi-final as he recorded the first knockdown of the night as he floored Jason Cook on his way to another unanimous points triumph, this time by margins of 29-28, 29-26, 28-27.

Cook had been fortunate to advance in his quarter-final tie with previously undefeated Londoner Michael Grant. After a poor start, Grant appeared on top in the last round but a bad cut, sustained earlier in a bloody contest via an accidental head-clash that left both men marked, got worse and referee Ian John Lewis stopped it with just under 50 seconds left.

In the other half of the draw, Colin Lynes moved into the final with hard-fought split decision victories over David Barnes and Young Mutley.

Lynes gained a triumph over Barnes by 28-29, 29-28 and 29-28 scorelines. A controversial knockdown in the last round against Mutley, which the Midlander was furious with, helped Lynes to victory by 30-27, 28-29 and 30-27 margins.

This contest had been a rematch of a British title fight and Lynes was again the man who had his arm raised although Mutley was furious with the decision, believing he should have been the one advancing into the final.

Mutley had made the final four with a classy points win over Barrie Jones, who stepped into the competition at short notice after Barry Morrison had to withdraw due to illness.

Team Espino Training Camp Notes

Hollywood, CA ~ December 4, 2009

In preparation for his highly anticipated bout on December 19th against world middleweight champion Kelly “the Ghost” Pavlik (35-1, 31 KO’s), North Hollywood native Miguel Espino (20-2-1, 9 KO’s) has been training like never before in hopes of taking home both world title belts come fight night. Training out of Fortune Gym in Hollywood with trainer John Bray, Espino is putting everything he has into this training camp, sparring with the likes of Russian super middleweight prospects Dmitry and Fedor Chudinov and Justin Fortune’s middleweight prospect Tyrell Hendrix.

Espino is getting all he can handle while sparring with the two brothers and Hendrix. Standing outside of the gym, you know there is intense sparring going on. When Bray was asked how training was going, he expressed the following “we are working real hard and will be ready to go to war come December 19th.” After hitting the mitts with the Bray, Espino took some time to state that, “I feel good right now. I think this is the best shape I’ve ever been in. John and I are taking this fight seriously and he isn’t letting up on me one bit. I’ll keep doing my thing for the next couple of weeks and come fight night, I hope to be the one with my arms raised and the two belts around me.”

Walker, the 1982 Heisman Trophy winner and two-time Pro Bowl competitor, will face an opponent to be announced in one of as many as five televised fights live on SHOWTIME® (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast) bouts on the STRIKEFORCE card.

The 6-foot-1 inch, 220-pound former running back, who already holds a fifth degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and boasts additional training in the combat disciplines of Muay Thai and Kenpo, recently entered a 12-week MMA training camp at San Jose, California’s American Kickboxing Academy (AKA), which plays home to a host of the world’s greatest fighters, including STRIKEFORCE Lightweight Champion Josh “The Punk” Thomson and undefeated middleweight superstar Cung Le.

Walker, a 1999 College Hall of Fame inductee who was also selected to Sports Illustrated’s NCAA All-Century Team that year, has never been one to shy away from the road less traveled.

Walker, a born-again Christian, astonished the sports world by withdrawing from school to play professional ball in the newly formed United States Football League (USFL) rather than wait to enter the NFL draft after the graduation of his collegiate class, a rule maintained by the world’s largest professional football league at the time.

While the vast majority of football players typically follow an intensive weight room regimen, Walker relied on bodyweight exercise, conditioning, and calisthenics while maintaining very little body fat.

Walker was eventually drafted in 1985 by The Dallas Cowboys and established himself as a premiere running back in the league. In 1986, he was the driving force behind a historic trade that sent in to The Minnesota Vikings in exchange for five players and six draft picks.

In 12 NFL seasons with four different teams, he became the only player to gain 4,000 yards three different ways – rushing, receiving, and kickoff returns. He is one of six players to exceed 60 touchdowns rushing and 20 touchdowns receiving and is the only player in NFL history to register a 90 plus yard reception, a 90 plus yard run, and a 90 plus yard kickoff return, all in one season (1994).

Off the gridiron, Walker has achieved a handful of feats, including a seventh place finish in the 1992 Winter Olympics two-man bobsled competition. Now 47 years of age, the native of Wrightsville, Georgia will look to conquer a whole new world.

Diaz will make his first start since he submitted hard-hitting Scott “Hands of Steel” Smith with a rear naked choke in the third round (1:41) of their STRIKEFORCE: Lawler vs. Shields matchup at St. Louis, Missouri’s Scottrade Center on June 6, 2009. The 26 year old Diaz, a native of Stockton, California, will put a five fight win streak on the line.

Cyborg made history on Aug. 15, 2009 when the 24-year-old native of Brazil stopped superstar Gina Carano with a punishing barrage of strikes in the first round (4:59) of their meeting to become the first-ever STRIKEFORCE women’s champion. The long-awaited showdown between Carano and Cyborg also marked the first women’s main event in the history of any major MMA promotion.

Doors at BankAtlantic Center open at 7 p.m. The first non-televised, preliminary card fight will begin at 8 p.m.

STRIKEFORCE in March 2009 signed a multi-year agreement to stage live MMA events on the premium cable television network. The promotion made its live, primetime debut on CBS with the “Fedor vs. Rogers” mega-fight that it co-promoted with M-1 Global on Saturday, November 7 and generated 5.46 million viewers for the main event between the world’s number one heavyweight, Fedor Emelianenko, and superstar Brett “The Grim” Rogers.

In recognition of Muhammad Ali’s countless contributions in and out of the boxing ring, the Waterbury Police Activity League and local author Felix Manuel Rodriguez will honor and celebrate Ali’s 68th birthday and prolific career in Waterbury

WATERBURY, CT – It has been more than 40 years since Muhammad Ali burst upon the scene as a gold-medal winner at the 1960 Olympics in Rome. To this day, Ali remains a magical figure, known and adored throughout the world. As a boxer, Ali had unprecedented speed and grace, while his charm and wit changed forever what the public thought a boxer should be.

On January 17, 2010, Muhammad Ali will celebrate his 68th birthday. In recognition of this milestone and his prolific career in and out of the boxing ring, local author Felix Manuel Rodriguez has partnered with the Waterbury Police Activity League and “Aliologists” (Muhammad Ali experts) from across the state to honor and celebrate Muhammad Ali’s 68th birthday and prolific career.

In association with Muhammad Ali’s countless contributions and this event, Governor M. Jodi Rell will declare January 17, 2010 as Muhammad Ali Day in Connecticut.

“Muhammad Ali’s dream to share his inspiration, hope, and peace throughout the world, appeals to the heart, spirit, and imagination of many adults and children right here in Connecticut,” Governor Rell said.

This event is an effort to advance Ali’s core guiding principles, which is to promote respect, hope, and understanding and to inspire adults and children everywhere to be as great as they can be.

“Muhammad Ali inspired me to be a better person, to be more humble and caring. He has been a huge inspiration not only to me, but to millions of people across the world,” said Rodriguez, author of Dad, Me, and Muhammad Ali.

The Waterbury Police Activity League (P.A.L.) will host this celebration at the William J. Sullivan Learning Center located at 58 Griggs Street in Waterbury on Sunday, January 17, 2010 from 2 to 4pm. There will be a brief biographical video highlighting Ali’s career, guest speakers, and meet and greet with local authors who will conduct a book reading and signing. It will be a free event and open to the general public. The first 100 families will receive a copy of Dad, Me, and Muhammad Ali compliments of State Farm Agent Mark Shumilla of Waterbury, CT.
