PACQUIAO VS. COTTO-QUOTES FROM OFFICIAL WEIGH-IN

LAS VEGAS (November 13, 2009) – Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto stepped onto the scales earlier today, weighing in at 144 lbs and 145 lbs respectively, in front of a full house and ruckus crowd of 6,500 fans, with 3,000 more watching in the MGM Grand lobby and Sports Book. Both fighters could not have been happier that the “weight” is over and the countdown is on with just over 24 hours to go before they meet in the ring for FIREPOWER: PACQUIAO VS COTTO. The championship bout takes place tomorrow, Saturday, November 14, at MGM Grand Garden Arena and will be produced and distributed live on HBO Pay-Per-View®, beginning at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.
Pacquiao ran a little late for his arrival because he had to eat lunch before heading to the arena. Here is what both fighters said immediately after weighing in.
MANNY PACQUIAO
“Speed conquers all but I also have the power. The second Marquez fight made me think. I never looked at my opponents’ tapes before that fight but now I do. At this level, hard gym workouts are not enough. I need to go to school for every opponent. I need to study them. I consider myself a student of boxing now, not just a fighter.
“Cotto’s size and power need to be respected, but I will leverage his size against him. We have numerous plans to do this depending on the style of fight he presents on Saturday night. We are prepared. As important as it is to have advantages, knowing how to use them is even more crucial.
“This fight is so special to me because I will attempt to make history as the first fighter to win seven world titles in seven different divisions. People will always remember the first person to do that wasn’t just Manny Pacquiao, but Filipino Manny Pacquiao.
“When I enter the ring, it is with the strength, the inspiration and the love of my people in my heart, and there is nothing stronger than that. I fight for their honor, and they honor me with their hopes and prayers for my well being.
“This will be a great fight between two great fighters representing their proud heritages. I know we will give fans all over the world a great night of sports entertainment.”
FREDDIE ROACH
“Manny is a carrier of the M1P1 Virus. M1P1 stands for Middleweight Power. He has developed a middleweight punch while maintaining his exceptional speed. Manny has promised me to stay off the ropes in this fight and he hates to disappoint me.
“Manny’s right has become so strong there will be nowhere for Cotto to go. Manny’s prepared to throw his right hook all night long, but believe me his left will be ready to chill Cotto the minute he moves into range.
“Manny’s body punching has gone to a new level and he is an expert at counterpunching from any stance. I honestly don’t know where Cotto can go to escape Manny ‘s onslaught. And unlike previous opponents who have hurt Cotto, Manny is the best finisher I have ever worked with. If Manny shakes up Cotto in round one, he’ll finish the job.
“We have noted the bad habits embedded in Cotto’s style and we will exploit all of them. Believe me, there are enough of them, like with Hatton and De la Hoya, to give Manny plenty of targets.”
MIGUEL COTTO
“We had a great training camp, which is the reason why I wanted to take our team to Tampa. I am facing a great fighter in Pacquiao. He has great hand speed and a big heart. It will be a battle.
I began boxing when I was a little boy, just 11 years old. I always dreamed of fighting for the world championship. I have fought in world title fights, won championships, but this fight is very special. I want to tell all of my fans that I am ready to fight. We have a great game plan and we will win.”

“We know we are facing a tremendous fighter in Pacquiao. He brings a lot into the ring. But we have our plan how to counter all of that, win the fight, keep the title belt and head home to celebrate in Puerto Rico.”

Gomez vs. Nguyen at Tachi Palace Fights 2 on Dec. 3

Gomez is far from ‘Useless’ these days
Lemoore, Calif. – Ulysses Gomez is quickly emerging as a ruthless competitor in mixed martial arts circles.
The Cobra Kai trained flyweight improved his record to 4-1 in October at Tachi Palace Fights 1 with his fourth submission, a vicious rear-naked choke against Oakdale, Calif.’s Martin Sandoval (4-2).
But as fierce of a competitor Gomez is in the cage, it gives way to the comedian outside the cage, as Gomez has become an urban legend and fan-favorite among hardcore MMA fans on the infamous “UG” on the discussion forums of www.mma.tv.
“I first started posting there just a bunch of stupid stuff to get people’s attention I guess. And then people started to kind of follow my grappling career and pankration career,” said Gomez, who will take on Sioux Falls, S.D.’s Ben Nguyen (4-2) on Thursday, December 3 at Tachi Palace Fights 2’s “Brawl in the Hall” at the Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino in Lemoore, Calif.
“I’ve gained a lot of popularity on there, but the ‘UG’ is like the uncle that paid your way through college, but also beat you, it’s a love hate thing you know what I mean.”
Love-hate also describes the way fight fans are starting to feel about Gomez in Central California and beyond.
The avid video game player has had the daunting task as playing the villain role in many of his fights at the Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino, including a 3-round decision loss to Thailand’s Rambaa Somdet (6-2).
“I’m pretty well known on Xbox 360, too. I don’t play that much anymore really. It started out at Cobra Kai as a contest to see who could get the most gamer points and I think I had like two thousand at the time,” Gomez said. “I won the contest with like 44 thousand points and Marc Laimon had like 21 thousand in second I think. But now I haven’t played too much I’m too busy riding my bike or taking naps.”
Nguyen certainly isn’t some one to sleep on. He displayed well-rounded skills in his knockout loss to Alexis Vila (6-0).
“I think that (Nguyen) likes Dragon Ball Z, he’s pretty good on the ground and obviously isn’t afraid to throw punches. I know he’s a nice guy and I think this is going to be a good challenge for both of us,” Gomez said. “I’m more than willing to fight this fight on the feet or we can go to the ground. Ultimately, the decision will be his.”
Nguyen’s decision on where the fight will go might have already been made.
“I feel like I’m going to do awesome pretty much. I know he’s beatable. I’m going to try and keep it standing and if it does go to the ground I will be ready,” Nguyen said. “I see it staying standing, though, with me picking him apart. If it goes to the ground I will pound him out.”

In a pair of feature bouts, Parris, France’s Cyrille Diabate (14-6-1), who is a former coach on Spike TV’s
“The Ultimate Fighter” battles veteran light heavyweight Milwaukee, Wis.’s Rob Smith (20-13-1).

USA East’s path to the semi-finals was the most dramatic, tying 2008 statistical second best Finland in the “Group C” bracket at 2-1 team wins, 10-15 overall and getting into the semis by merit of one of those team wins being over Finland. Of the teams in the semis this was the worst record. USA West came into this match undefeated in team wins at 3-0 and tied with “Group D” winners Legion for individual wins at 13-2. With Dave Jansen signing to WEC Shane Del Rosario and Fabio Nascimento returned to USA West, joined by Joao Asis and Spencer Hooker in taking on their American rivals. USA East cleverly designed their roster after West confirmed their own, picking individuals to overcome the statistical disadvantages. Grigsby dropped back down to light heavyweight and Marshbanks returned while Jorge, Heleno, and Dos Santos came aboard specifically to counter West. East’s strategy worked as only Marshbanks lost.
With this win USA East face Russia Legion in the finals December 3rd.

McCreedy Predicts He’ll Stop Griffin in 5

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Nov. 13, 2009) – New England and EBA super middleweight champion, “Irish” Joey McCreedy (11-3-1, 6 KOs), fights his first real “name” opponent, “The Next Great Champ” winner Otis “Triple OG” Griffin (20-6-2, 8 KOs), in the main event Nov. 20 on the Irish-themed “Autumn Classic” pro boxing show, presented by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc. (CES), at Twin River Event Center in Lincoln, R.I.
McCreedy, the best boxer out of Lowell (MA) since “Irish” Micky Ward, is coming in fresh off of a stunning first-round stoppage of Eddie Caminero on Sept. 4. McCreedy steps up in class against Griffin, who has been in against two world champions, Danny Green and Jeff Lacy, in their 8-round, non-title bout.
Griffin, in addition to winning Oscar de la Hoya’s “The Next Great Champ” reality television show, also held the NABO light heavyweight title two years ago. He has been a sparring partner for Mikkel Kessler and Chad Dawson in preparation for his throw-down with McCreedy.
“It’s a big step-up for me,” McCreedy said about his match against Griffin. “Otis is a great fighter and the first big name, from the television series, I’ve fought. My training for this fight has been great. I’m in the best shape of my life, 168 (pounds) right now (8 days before the fight). But it’s going to be plain old me. I’m going to put on a good show. I have no concerns going eight rounds, if I have to, because I went 8, toe-to-toe, with Bobo (Starnino). It’s not going eight; I’m saying five. I’m going to catch him early so he doesn’t get a chance to use his experience. I will knock him out.”
Only 8-months since the birth of her daughter, Neyla, 4-time world champion Jaime “The Hurricane” Clampitt (19-4-1, 7 KOs), of Warwick (RI), returns to the ring against an opponent to be determined in the 6-round co-feature.
Providing chief support on the undercard is 2008 U.S. Olympic Team alternate Danny O’Connor (9-0, 3 KOs), fighting out of Framingham (MA), against dangerous James Hope (4-2, 4 KOs) in a 6-rounder.
Also on the undercard in 4-round bouts are Providence super middleweight Vladine Biosse (4-0, 3 KOs), a former University of Rhode Island football player, versus 24-fight veteran Jeffrey Osbourne.
