Spina and Del Valle fight to majority draw; Lundy KO’s Valtierra in first round

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (Oct. 31, 2009) – World rated light heavyweight Joey “KO Kid” Spina (25-1-2, 17 KOs) and former world champion Lou “Honey Boy” Del Valle (36-6-2 (22 KOs) fourth to a 10 round majority draw tonight in the main event on the “Fright Night At The Sun” card, presented by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc., at Mohegan Sun Arena.

Del Valle won on one judge’s scorecard, 97-93, but the other judges had it even, 95-95. If Spina had won the final round he would have gotten the decision.

“I thought it was a nice win,” Del Valle said after the fight. “I lost 60 pounds in five weeks. Give me six weeks and I would have knocked him out. I was sluggish, not rusty. I hut my right and my left was numb the whole fight. If he’s rated 12, I should be 10. I wasn’t planning on fighting. I trained Tony Grano for his last fight (win vs. Travis Kaufman). When they asked me if I’d take this fight at 181m I set let’s go. I want a rematch with Spina and then we’ll go from there. I’ll do it at 175 but give me two months.”

“I thought it was fine,” Spina commented about the draw. “I just couldn’t get off like I wanted. He’s a slick fighter. He was very frustrating. I thought I hit him with the better punches, but I couldn’t get close enough. I’d hit him, he’d grab and the ref wouldn’t let us fight. He’s a tough, experienced guy.”

In the co-feature, undefeated lightweight “Hammerin’” Hank Lundy (16-0-1, 10 KOs) made a strong statement by stepping up in class and not missing a beat. The reigning UBC light welterweight champion fought as a lightweight again and kept rolling with a first-round TKO win against Aldo “El Pato” Valtierra (25-12, 13 KOs). Lundy caught Valtierra with an explosive left hook that dropped the game Mexican (25-12, 13 KOs), who was unable to get to his feet before the referee counted to 10 near the end of round one. Valtierra suffered his second stoppage in 37 pro fights, the first coming in 11 rounds.

“I tell everybody the hard work is done in the gym,” Lundy explained. “My sparring partners gave me good work. I did what my corner told me – sat-down on my punches and took my time. When there in there with ‘Hammerin’ Hank — my speed and power — once they get hit it’s a wreck and the fight is over.

“This says I’m ready for anybody from 135 to 140 – Timothy Bradley, any of the Peterson brothers, anybody in the world. If they think they’re man enough, call ‘The Hammer.’ I’m not playing. I gave out the punishment and got right out of there. “

Unbeaten Hartford middleweight David Bauza (3-0, 3 KOs) teed-off against overmatched Vaughn Anderson (0-2) from the opening bell until the match was halted less than 2-minutes into the first round. “This was my best fight so far as a pro,” Bauza noted. “Little by little, I’ve been working with my trainer, Luis Rosa, to correct the little things.”

2008 U.S. Olympian Sadam “World Kid” Ali (4-0, 2 KOs) was impressive once again, outclassing fellow Bronx welterweight Osvaldo Rivera (2-2-1, 1 KO) en route to a victory by a unanimous 4-round decision. “I don’t there I had ring rust, it was more his eight and him moving and not staying in there with me,” Ali commented. “I know I can do better. He knew how to use his defense after he got hit.”

Quincy (MA) lightweight Ryan “The Polish Prince” Kielczewski (6-0, 2 KOs) won a thrilling 4-round unanimous decision versus a slick Israel Suarez (2-3) in a back-and-forth bout.

Long Island light heavyweight Joe “The Irish Bomber” Smith, Jr., 2008 New York Golden Gloves champion, went into his pro debut advertised as a heavy hitter and he lived up to his advance billing, slamming David Brown (0-1) with a straight right, followed a barrage of hard punches that resulted in the bout being stopped late in the opening round. “It felt good,” Smith described his big right that started the damage. “I felt it in my hand, saw his eyes go back, and my instincts took over.”

Hartford super lightweight Edwin Soto improved to 2-0 by way of a 4-round majority decision against Deroy Beaton (1-1).

Gleason’s Amateur Boxing Shows

This Saturday show is part of our Monthly Boxing Series. The club show will include JO, Novice, Senior and Master bouts.

The weigh in will begin at 5:00PM and the first bout will begin at 7:00PM. If you wish to compete on this show, please contact New York’s number one matchmaker, Angela Querol. She can be reached at (718) 797-2872 or by email at gleasons75@aol.com.

All our bouts are pre-matched. They are sanctioned by USA Boxing Metro. All boxers must have their boxing book with them in order to participate.

The ticket price is $20 per person. All gym members and registered amateurs with their books in hand pay $15 per person.

Gleason’s Gym will host it’s second annual Masters Clinic and boxing show February 18-20,2010.

Thursday morning will be the arrival into New York. Orientation will be from 12:00 noon to 1:oo pm. The first workout will be from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. A discussion on Masters boxing will be from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm. Free time after that.

Friday morning will have training from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon. The afternoon session will run from 2 pm to 4:00 pm. A discussion on Amateur boxing and White Collar boxing will be from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm. Free time after that.

Saturday morning will have light training from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon. Match ups for the evening show will take place from 12:00 noon to 1:00 pm. An optional workout for those not competing in the evening show from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. The weigh in for the show will be from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm. The sanctioned Master Boxing Show will begin at 7:00 pm and will end by 10:00 pm.

The cost of the Clinic is $299.00.

Chazz Witherspoon, Victor Vasquez, Tony Ferrante and Tommie Speller vs. Jameel Wilson headline a big night of boxing at the Arena

PHILADELPHIA (OCTOBER 30, 2009)—It will be a sensational night of boxing on Friday night December 11th as Greg Robinson’s Power Productions Boxing Ringside presents a night of boxing featuring some of the best local talent in the area that will be headlined by local return of one of the top heavyweights in the world in Chazz Witherspoon.

The nine bout card will take place at The Arena in South Philadelphia.

Witherspoon of Paulsboro, New Jersey brings in a record of 26-1 with eighteen knockouts and is riding a three fight knockout streak since his only blemish to former world title challenger Chris Arreola on June 21st, 2008.

Since then, Witherspoon has stopped Adam “The Swamp Donkey” Richards (22-1), Travis Fulton and Willie Perryman.

This will be Witherspoon’s first area appearance since February 15, 2008 when he stopped Jonathan Haggler in four rounds in Sewell, New Jersey.

Witherspoon’s opponent for the eight round main event will be announced shortly.

Fresh off of his emphatic victory over Tyric Robinson on October 16th, the popular Victor Vasquez will see action in a six round Lightweight bout.

Vasquez, 10-3 with five knockouts put on his most complete performance to date as he boxed well and showed improved defense in his first fight under new trainer Chris Rotella.

Vasquez will take on a opponent to be named.

Undefeated and popular are two words to describe light heavyweight Tony Ferrante and on December 11th he will be in the ring to risk that record in front of his hundreds of adoring fans.

Ferrante of Northeast Philadelphia has a record of 8-0 with half of those wins coming early. In his last bout, Ferrante scored a very tough and hard earned majority decision over tough Billy Bailey on July 10th at The Arena.

In a six round Light Heavyweight bout, it will be an all Philadelphia showdown as Tommie “Big Poppa” Speller battles Jameel “Black Gold” Wilson.

Speller of Philadelphia has a record of 4-3 with three knockouts and is desperate to get back in the win column as he has dropped three in a row that includes his last bout where he and Mario Mina engaged in a four round war before Speller dropped the four round unanimous decision on October 16th at The Legendary Blue Horizon.

Wilson of Philadelphia is even more desperate as he has dropped five in a row and is 0-12-1 in his last thirteen against top flight competition such as Tarvis Simms, Antuon Echols, LaJuan Simon, and Elvir Muriqi.

Wilson is now 13-16-3 with eight knockouts is coming off an eight round unanimous decision defeat to Willie Williams (11-2) last November 26 in Maryland.

“This fight is what Philly boxing is all about”, said Greg Robinson, CEO of Power Productions.

“This is a Philly turf war and there can be only one winner.”

South Philly’s John Mecurio (3-0, 3 KO’s) will take on an opponent to be named in a four round Heavyweight bout.

Impressive Super Featherweight, Coy Evans (5-0-1) will risk his undefeated mark in a four round bout.

Lou Rodriguez (1-0) of Philadelphia will take part in a four round Welterweight tussle.

Freakish 6’4” inch Middleweight, Derrick Webster (3-0, 2 KO’s) of Glassboro, NJ will make his third appearance at The Arena in a four round bout.

Rounding out the card will be Wahid Raheem (3-0, 1 KO) of Philadelphia in a four round Super Featherweight bout. Raheem is the brother of Lightweight contender Zahir Raheem.

It’s “BACK TO BUSINESS” for future Hall of Fame fighter Winky Wright (51-5-1/25 KOs) as he takes on Grady “Bad Boy” Brewer (26-11-15KOs) in a middleweight main event of an exciting fight card which will take place on Friday December 11 at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico in San Juan, Puerto Rico and live on Pay-Per-View. The fight was officially announced this week at a press conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

San Juan City Knockout in conjunction with Winky Wright Promotions and Knockout Entertainment Inc. (www.KnockoutSeries.com), have announced their entry into the Puerto Rico sports scene as they stage their first joint promotion with “BACK TO BUSINESS.” Wright, who’s longstanding friendship with Puerto Rican legend Felix “Tito” Trinidad, who he got to know well after their May 2005 fight, thought the island was a perfect place for his return to the ring.

“Puerto Rico is great place to have this fight as it is seep in boxing history and tradition with the Puerto Rican people embracing the sport like very few places around the world,” said Wright, who is returning to the ring for the first time since his fight with Paul Williams at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada this past April. “Tito and I have become great friends and each time I come to visit I have been ingratiated by the fans whom love and appreciate boxing so much. “I appreciate the opportunity to fight Winky Wright in a place where boxing has been followed and understood for so long,” said Brewer, who is held two Light Middleweight titles, was the winner of “The Contender” reality show season 2 and most impressively is on an eight-fight winning streak including his most recent domination of Albert Omolunese (KO 2) in Pala, California on August 22 of this year. “The fans might not know me like they know Winky but they will know me a lot better after I beat him that night.”

The event also marks the return of esteemed Puerto Rican champion, Alex “el Nene” Sanchez. El Nene held the WBO light flyweight Champion title in 2004. He is forward to a return to the ring and is excited about fighting in front of his hometown people again.

“Boxing is my life and I feel confident that I can get back to the top of my game with a win December 11,” said Sanchez “To fight one more time for my people on the same card as the great champion Winky Wright and to do it at the Coilseo is a blessing I will never forget.”

In addition to island favorite Sanchez, the undercard will also features Felix “Tito” Trinidad’s undefeated welterweight protégé Eliezer Gonzalez (6-0/3 Kos) and Golden Boy’s Puerto Rican combatant twins Juan Carlos Velasquez (9-1/5 KOs) and Carlos Ivan Velasquez (11-0-1/9 KOs).
