November 2, 2009 – Carina “La Reina” Moreno (21-2, 6 KO’s) suffered her second professional lost when she relinquished her WBC minimumweight belt to Anabel Ortiz (11-1) this past weekend in Toluco, MX. The fight went the full 10 rounds and scorecards read 96-94 twice and 97-93.

“I couldn’t get my punches off,” said Moreno. “I felt a bit lethargic after the first few rounds. I take nothing away from Ortiz, she’s a great fighter. I’ve been promised an immediate rematch from promoter Ignacio Huizar. I’m hoping we can fight again sometime in December.”

Trainer Rick Nobel went on to say, “It’s very tough to fight in this elevation. I take full responsibility for this loss as I know I over-trained Carina. Ortiz was ready to go and we take nothing away from her. We’re looking for a rematch, preferably in the U.S.

A rematch between Moreno and Ortiz could happen as early as December. KO Entertainment promoter, Ignacio Huizar made this fight happen and it looks like he’s interested in putting on the rematch sometime in the near future. Carina Moreno and Dr. Noriega want to thank KO Entertainment for their great hospitality.

Saturday’s “David vs. Goliath” PPV card live from Germany

HOBOKEN, N.J. (Nov. 2, 2009) – Two-time and reigning World Boxing Association heavyweight champion Nikolai “The Russian Giant” Valuev isn’t letting constant trash- talking by 3-time world cruiserweight champion David “The Haymaker” Haye get into his head as he makes final preparations for Saturday’s “David vs. Goliath” world title fight being broadcast in North America live on Pay-Per-View from Nuremberg, Germany.

Valuev (50-1, 34 KOs), from St. Petersburg, Russia, is the tallest and heaviest champion in history at an unnerving 7 feet and 325 pounds, who has defeated a trio of heavyweight champions — Evander “The Real Deal” Holyfield, John “The Quietman” Ruiz (twice), and Sergei Liakhovich. With his obvious physical advantages, coupled by invaluable ring experience, Valuev will not be intimidated by Haye’s “smack.”

“He can say what he wants,” Valuev said. “I don’t care about it. I will give my answer in the ring. A lot of opponents have tried to provoke me but nobody has ever succeeded. I don’t care about his statements. Needless to say, I am very confident of success.”

Valuev-Haye is promoted by Wilfried Sauerland’s Sauerland Event and its Managing Director, Christian Meyer, in association with Don King Productions. Haye, (22-1, 21 KOs), from London, England, has defeated four world cruiserweight champions: Enzo Maccarinelli and Jean Marc Mormeck for unified crowns, Giacobbe Fragomeni (TKO9) for the European title, and “King” Arthur Williams (TKO3). “The Hayemaker” moved up to heavyweight a year ago after leaving the cruiserweight division in ruins as the unified WBA/WBC/WBO cruiserweight champion. He plans to showcase his superior quickness and athleticism against “The Russian Giant.”

“Obviously, he is fast,” Valuev noted. “But I have prepared for his speed. We have prepared well in practice for him and his style. How he stands-up to my punching remains to be seen when we are in the ring. I don’t make predictions but I will defend my title.”

Two-time WBA heavyweight champion John “The Quietman” Ruiz (43-8-1, 29 KOs), the current WBA No. 1 rated and “official challenger,” faces former IBU champion Adnan “Aachen Assassin” Serin (19-10-1, 7 KOs) in the opening live PPV bout on the Valuev-Haye. MIGUEL COTTO COULD BE NEXT SPOILER AS PUERTO RICAN “GAME CHANGERS” NOT UNUSUAL IN SPORT’S HISTORY

Although boxing and betting experts are bestowing their beliefs and bank accounts on a Manny Pacquiao victory over Miguel Cotto on Saturday November 14, Miguel Cotto believes differently and boxing history books tell a different story as there have been many a Puerto Rican fighter-from an island rich in producing infamous boxing champions-who have come in the underdog and walked away with the upset victory. Cotto looks to keep the tradition of these former Puerto Rican fighters alive by doing the same to Pacquiao when they meet in one of the most exciting boxing battles of the year.

March 30, 1965: Jose Torres KO 9 Willie Pastrano, MSG, NYC (Wins world light heavyweight title): Pastrano, a veteran of 82 fights, is dropped by Cus D’Amato protege and 1956 Olympic silver medalist Torres, 34-1-1, in the sixth round, and the fight is stopped between the ninth and 10th. Torres, 28, becomes an instant hero in NYC. Pastrano, 29, never fights again.

November 13, 1965: Carlos Ortiz W 15 Ismael Laguna, San Juan (Regains WBC lightweight title): Seven months earlier, Panamanian speed demon Laguna, 40-2-1, had taken the title from the 28-year-old Ortiz in Panama City. In the rematch, Ortiz, 45-5, stuns the world by negating Laguna’s speed and reclaiming the title by unanimous decision. They would fight a rubber match in 1967, with Ortiz winning by unanimous decision in New York City.

March 6, 1976: Wilfred Benitez W 15 (split) Antonio Cervantes, San Juan (Wins WBA junior welterweight title): Puerto Rico’s Benitez, 17, becomes the youngest world titlist in history (record still stands) by brilliantly outpointing consummate pro Cervantes, 30, who was making his 11th defense and engaging in his 86th fight. It can be argued that defensive genius Benitez, 26-0, never matched this performance despite going on to win world titles at two additional weights.

November 17, 1972: Esteban DeJesus W 10 Roberto Duran, MSG, NYC (non-title bout): In the first of what would be three epic battles, the 21-year-old DeJesus, 33-1, floors lightweight champion Duran, 31-0, with a left hook in round one and goes on to win a unanimous decision to the delight of the predominantly Puerto Rican crowd at the Garden. Duran would win the second and third bouts, both title fights, by kayo, and DeJesus would go on to win the WBC 135-pound title.

October 28, 1978: Wilfredo Gomez KO 5 Carlos Zarate, Hato Rey, PR (Retains WBC super bantamweight title): The 21-year-old super bantamweight champion Gomez, 21-0-1, shocks the boxing world by crushing Mexico’s Zarate, the reigning bantamweight championwho is ranked in the top three on virtually all pound-for-pound lists. It is Gomez’s sixth title defense. Zarate was favored because he entered the ring with a barely believable record of 52-0 with 51 kayos. Both fighters struggle to make weight, but Zarate needs four trips to the scale to reduce to 122, and is clearly weakened by the effort.

September 26, 1986: Edwin Rosario KO 2 Livingstone Bramble, Miami Beach (Wins WBA lightweight title): After losing to Hector Camacho in June, Rosario, 28-2, is a significant underdog against the 26-year-old Bramble, 24-1-1, and in his prime after scoring wins over Ray Mancini (twice) and Tyrone Crawley. Rosario, 23, flaunts his crushing kayo power against a fighter with a defense that had been thought to be impenetrable. It is the start of Rosario’s second reign as a 135-pound titlist.

September 18, 1999: Felix Trinidad W 12 Oscar De La Hoya, Las Vegas (Retains IBF welterweight title; Wins WBC welterweight title): In a hotly anticipated battle of unbeaten champions and icons, Trinidad and De La Hoya add a significant chapter to the history of Puerto Rico-Mexico (or Mexican-American) battles. The 26-year-old Trinidad, 35-0, rallies in the late rounds, forces De la Hoya to retreat and wins a controversial majority decision.

Cotto (34-1, 27 KOs), from Caguas, Puerto Rico has sold more tickets to Madison Square Garden in this millennium than any other fighter. He has held a world title every year since 2004. Puerto Rico’s most exciting fighter, Cotto held the WBO junior welterweight crown from 2004-2006, successfully defending it six times before vacating it to capture the World Boxing Association (WBA) welterweight title at the end of 2006, a title he held for nearly as long. He won his second welterweight title in February, knocking out Michael Jennings in the fifth round at Madison Square Garden to become the WBO welterweight champion. Notable scalps on Cotto’s belt include Sugar Shane Mosley, Zab Judah, Joshua Clottey, Paulie Malignaggi and Demarcus Corley.

New Team Ruiz in Germany for Saturday’s fight on Valuev-Haye PPV card

LAS VEGAS (November 2, 2009) – A new-look Team Ruiz has arrived in Germany to make final preparations for Saturday night’s 10-round fight between 2-time World Boxing Association (WBA) heavyweight champion John “The Quietman” Ruiz, the current WBA No. 1 rated contender, against former IBU champion Adnan “Aachen Assassin” Serin on the Nicolai Valuev-David Haye pay-per-view card live from Nuremberg, Germany.

Ruiz (43-8-1, 29 KOs) agreed with the promoters for Valuev and Haye to “step aside” as the WBA “Official Challenger.” By defeating Serin (19-10-1, 7 KOs), he is guaranteed a title bout against the Valuev-Haye winner by the end of May, 2010.

Ruiz, the first and only world heavyweight champion of Latino heritage, has made significant changes to Team Ruiz, adding head trainer/cutman Miguel Diaz and former WBA bantamweight Richie Sandoval (1984-86) as an assistant trainer. They join Ruiz’ brother, Eddie, in the corner and Atty. Tony Cardinale remains as manager/legal advisor.

“I’ve been boxing a long time but I work hard to continue improving,” Ruiz said from his Las Vegas training camp before departing for Germany. “Miguel is an outstanding trainer and everything has gone very well in training camp. Somewhere along the line, I got away from the basics, and we’ve been working in that area. I had been leading in and landing to close to my opponent, which resulted in a lot of clutching and grabbing. Miguel has been an inspiration for me. We’ve improved my style and I’m more aggressive. I’m moving more and getting hit less.”

Ruiz-Serin is tentatively scheduled to be the opening bout on the live PPV show being distributed by Integrated Sports in the United States and Canada starting at 3 PM/ET – 12 PM/PT on both cable and satellite via iN Demand, DIRECTV, TVN, DISH Network, Viewer’s Choice, Shaw PPV and Bell TV for a suggested retail price of only $24.95. A replay will be shown that same night at 9 PM/ET, 6 PM/PT.

Diaz has worked with 33 world champions having trained Roger Mayweather, Stevie Johnston, Diego Corrales, Robert Garcia and Ramon “Yory Boy” Campas, among the more notables. He’s also served as cutman for other champions such as Manny Pacquiao, Miguel Cotto, Kelly Pavlik, James Toney and Hasim Rahman.

“When I first got this job,” Miguel explained, “all I really knew about John was his clutching and grabbing that led to boring fights. Everyone will see a completely different fighter today. He’s smart and learns. He won the world title twice on guts and conditioning alone. He doesn’t look 37 and a lot of heavyweights mature older.

“He’s got a great jab that we’ve been emphasizing more. I’ve seen him stop guys in the gym with a jab to the chest and hook to the head. I’ve got him fighting up and down. He moves his knees, moves up and down, bobbing and weaving, and uses that stiff jab. More head and shoulder movement, too. When he’s on the ropes, he’s sitting down to make his opponent pay for missing. John has a great chin and he’s correcting mistakes he’s made in the past. People watching him fight are going to think he is John Ruiz’s younger brother. I am confident he will be world champion once again.”
