This week the season starts for many with pre season dinners and wrestle offs in the future. Its and exciting time for sure. I get a special sense about the year. Not sure I can put my finger on it yet. I’m trying. With that said, we will be covering the Inductions in to the Rice Hall of Champions Friday night in Waterloo, Iowa. We’ll report on that on this edition of TDR.

The Two Super Six Fighters Meet Face-to-Face

NOTTINGHAM, England (October 15, 2009)—Tensions mounted in Nottingham on Wednesday during the final press conference for Super Six World Boxing Classic participants Carl Froch and Andre Dirrell.

Froch turned up approximately 15 minutes late for the midday press conference. Dirrell and his promoter Gary Shaw took that as a sign of great disrespect. The stage was set for a verbal explosion once the conference finally got underway.

During the tradition post-conference faceoff photo opportunity, Dirrell taunted and laughed in the face of Froch.

The two have traded verbal jabs for weeks as the intensity builds toward this Saturday’s showdown at Trent FM Arena in Nottingham, England, live on SHOWTIME® at 8 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast). The live Froch vs. Dirrell fight will air immediately following the Arthur Abraham vs. Jermain Taylor bout, shown on tape-delay from the o2 World Arena in Berlin Germany .

“My fans, the people of Nottingham and I think the boxing fans around the world know what I’m capable of and what I’m about. I’ve proved that time and time again. I’ve fought top quality opposition throughout my career and made short work of 80% of them.”

“Andre Dirrell certainly talks a good fight but 25 of my previous opponents also talked a lot of trash and it didn’t get them anywhere. Talk is cheap and I’m not going to get involved in a slanging match. The fists are going to do the talking on the night.”

“I don’t get wound up by words and Dirrell has had a lot of words to say. I met him in New York three months out from the contest and we exchanged friendly banter, handshakes and hugs because fight time’s not really on the agenda at that point. But the minute my back was turned I was reading a lot of trash in the papers and seeing interviews on the internet. Andre Dirrell and his team lack class as far as I’m concerned. The language has been bad, the banters been terrible and I don’t want to get involved in any of that nonsense.”

“He knows he’s in deep water on Saturday night. He knows that once I start connecting with the bombs he’s going to be in serious trouble. I’ve got a feeling he’s going to run and run scared but it’s twelve by three minutes rounds and I will catch up with him and when I do I’m going to do some serious damage.”

“You all know the script, you know what’s happening, you know what’s coming. I bring it every time and I’ll be brining it Saturday night. I’m looking forward to it, I cannot wait. That belt’s going nowhere, it’s staying in Nottingham .

The fans know that they’re in for a good night and hopefully Andre Dirrell has trained as hard as he says he has because that means he might be fit enough to go an extra round or two when the bombs start landing. NEW YORK (Oct. 15, 2009)—Fresh off a sparkling victory on Sept. 25, budding superstar and two-time All-American wrestler at the University of Missouri, undefeated Tyron “T-Wood’’ Woodley (4-0) of St. Louis, will come back on Friday, Nov. 20, when he faces dangerous Rudy Bears (13-5) of Kansas City in the featured bout of an outstanding Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) card at historic Memorial Hall in Kansas City.

The highly regarded Woodley will be making his main event debut in the scheduled three-round, 5-minute welterweight (170 pounds) bout that will be one of five televised on SHOWTIME® at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the west coast).

Non-televised bouts in an event presented by San Jose, Calif.-based STRIKEFORCE, in association with Shamrock Promotions, will begin at 8 p.m. CT. Doors open at 7:15 CT. In his last outing, Woodley registered an impressive second-round submission (armbar) over former Tito Ortiz protégé, Zach Light fight at the STRIKEFORCE Challengers event in Tulsa, Okla. A popular up-and-comer, the 5-foot-9, 27-year-old Woodley, the 11th of 13 children raised mostly by a single mother, has won all his fights by submission.

The streaking Bears has won six in a row – five inside the distance — and eight of his last nine. Bears, who is making his STRIKEFORCE Challengers debut, is coming off a second-round TKO (punches) over Brendon Seguin on Aug. 28,

The promising Feijao, who has won all seven of his outings by stoppage, will be trying to rebound from one of the year’s biggest upsets. In an off-TV match last June 6, he lost by second-round TKO (punches) to Mike Kyle in St. Louis.

“That was a very disappointing night, but I’ve put it behind me,’’ Feijao said. “I appreciate this opportunity and I’ll be ready to go on Nov. 20. I owe it to STRIKEFORCE and the fans to show what I can really do.’’

Rosa, who turned pro in November 2005, won his initial 10 starts before losing two in a row. He has won his last two fights, including a first-round submission (rear-naked choke) over Anthony Ruiz on May 15, 2009, in Fresno, Calif. Eight of Rosa’s 12 career wins have come by stoppage.

The Feijao-Rosa scrap smacks with importance. The winner could be in line to face STRIKEFORCE light heavyweight champion Gegard Mousasi.

Voelker has won three of his last four starts and six of eight. A pro since February 2006, more than half of Voelker’s victories (12) have been the result of knockout or TKO.

Apple will be appearing for the first time before a paying audience since scoring perhaps a career-best triumph – a second-round submission over promising Matt Makowski on Aug. 28, 2008. Apple’s pro debut came in April 2003 and he competed regularly through August 2006. But he has fought only twice since. His lone defeat came in his effort before last to Brock Larson in March 2007.

Couture, the former wife of MMA legend Randy Couture, will be making her eagerly anticipated STRIKEFORCE and 2009 debut. After losing her first fight, Couture registered a 1:44, first-round TKO over Lina Kvokov on Nov. 21, 2008.

Vera also is seeking her second consecutive victory. She scored a three-round unanimous decision over Leslie Smith on May 15, 2009.

The undefeated Kaufman has won eight of her 10 starts by knockout. In her last outing, she outpointed tough Shayna “The Queen Of Spades’’ Baszler across three (five-minute) hard-fought rounds on the June 19 STRIKEFORCE Challengers card. A dancer since the age of two, the exciting, hard-hitting Kaufman also owns a points victory over promising Miesha Tate.

Hashi, a pro since April 2004, will enter the cage with an eight-fight winning streak.

John “The Quietman” Ruiz rights a wrong at home

LAS VEGAS (October 15, 2009) – Two-time world heavyweight champion John “The Quietman” Ruiz returned home today to right a wrong, making a donation to replace boxing equipment recently stolen from the South Boston Boxing Club (SBBC).

“The main reason I came here today is my brother (Eddie, a coach at the South Boston Boxing Club) told me what happened at this gym and how everything had been taken,” Ruiz explained why he made the donation and visited the gym. “I also love coming here and every time I have a chance to come to Boston, I try and take advantage. I was taken back by what happened here. I couldn’t understand how anybody could do that to kids. I really can’t put how I felt into words. It’s time to move forward, though. I wanted to do what I could to help the gym and the kids. Hopefully, everything will go back to normal here. They love coming here and, hopefully, I’ll be able to come back, too.

“I remember, as a kid, traveling the world with Team USA Boxing to places like Sweden and Australia. It got me believing that I could do something with my life. I grew-up in the projects and we didn’t have any money. I had so many negative people around me, but I got to see positives by traveling, I hope these kids see the light and know that life isn’t all negative. I hope that they stay positive and good things happen for them. I am happy to make this donation, along with Tony (Cardinale), on behalf of my team. I love boxing like all the kids that come here. You don’t have to become a world champion to enjoy things here. It’s a family and I hope you will accept me as a member of your family.”

Ruiz (43-8-1, 29 KOs), the first and only world heavyweight champion of Latino heritage, drove up from Mohegan Sun, where he is a special guest this week at the American Association of Professional Ringside Physicians (“AAPRP”) annual convention and awards night.

SBBC director Tommy Lee, on behalf of the staff and members, thanked Ruiz and took pictures with John and the many young boxers there today. “I want to thank John and Team Ruiz,” Lee said. “I got the call on Labor Day about the gym being broken into and all our new equipment being stolen. I told Eddie (Ruiz) the next night. He didn’t say much but the next night, he told me he spoke to his brother and the champ wanted to donate equipment for the kids. That shows what type of guy John Ruiz is. He’s always had a stellar reputation in New England boxing and he’s known as one of the nicest guys in boxing. John stepped up to replace the equipment. And he did it for these kids.”

Ruiz Encourages Donations

SBBC, located in the Curley Community Center, doesn’t charge membership fees and is open to any kids in Boston. SBBC does have expenses related to the costs associated with traveling teams competing in various amateur boxing tournaments (hotels, food, gas, etc.). Ruiz’ manager and legal advisor, Tony Cardinale, also made a donation towards the cost of the new equipment. “We wanted to do something to help as soon as we heard what had happened,” Tony remarked. “John came from the same background as this. We are here to support the gym and kids. When you go up those three steps and into the ring, it says a lot about that person. We hope it helps keep this program going. I also want to thank John Brown and Ringside. He’s a big supporter of amateur boxing. He and his company gave us this equipment for cost, which means we got double for the money.”

Former World Champ Luis Perez returns October 17th

MANAGUA, NICARAGUA (OCTOBER 15TH, 2009)–After more than a year of inactivity, two time former IBF world champ Luis Perez (25-3, 16 kos) returns to action in his home country of Nicaragua against fellow countryman Sergio Gomez (13-5, 9 kos). Perez will see action for the first time since his unsuccessful bid to become a champion in three different weight classes when he lost against Panamanian fighter Ricardo Cordoba in an attempt to gain the interim WBA super bantamweight title.

Perez vs. Gomez will be the headline of a big 13 bout fight card set up by Nicaraguan promotion company PRODESA in memory of former HOF boxer Alexis Arguello (RIP). Also participating in this fight card will also be world ranked fighters: Alvaro Perez (18-1-1, 12 kos), Evert Briceno (30-5-1, 25 kos) and Yader Escobar (20-2, 14 kos).

IBF Youth Champ Escobar ready for action

MANAGUA, NICARAGUA (OCTOBER 15, 2009)–Minimum weight boxer Yader Escobar (20-2, 14 kos) is scheduled to return to action this Saturday Oct 17th in a fight card promoted by Nicaraguan promotion company PRODESA. Escobar, is a highly touted Nicaraguan prospect in a country that already boasts two current world champions in that same weight class: WBA champ Roman Gonzalez (24-0, 20 kos) and interim WBC champ Juan Palacios (26-2, 21 kos).

Escobar, who is well ranked in various world boxing organizations (IBF #4, WBO #5, WBA #7 and WBC #12), will be facing tough fellow countryman Marlon Chavarria in a bout scheduled for 8 rounds. Chavarria has ample international experience having fought in countries such as Costa Rica and Panama and boasts a spectacular victory over then #3 ranked Venezuelan WBA fighter, Carlos Luis Campos.

Escobar vs. Chavarria is the third bout in importance in a fight card that will feature 13 bouts. Also participating in this fight card will be two time former IBF world champ Luis Perez, world ranked fighters Alvaro Perez and Evert Briceno, as well as some of the top prospects of Nicaragua. The fight card will be transmitted live via web cast thru www.prodesa.com.ni as well as differed thru www.gofightlive.tv

Escobar, who is coming off a victory over former world title challenger Eddie Castro in a fight for the IBF Youth championship, will be fighting for the fifth time this year. A victory here could propel him into a world title opportunity in the first semester of 2010.
