7th ANNUAL GLEASON’S GYM FANTASY BOXING CAMP

Gleason’s Gym held the seventh annual Fantasy Boxing Camp last month over the Labor Day weekend.

It was well attended with men and women of all ages from around the World.

The four-day event was high lighted with the boxing show on Sunday evening. All the participants were matched off with one another and in some cases the participants were matched with the World Champion and Hall of Fame trainers. The best bout of the evening was a rematch between Luis “Pinky” or “Fountain of Youth” Ramos against Mark Breland.

Six kids from ages 8 to 16 were sent to the camp by the generosity of Gleason’s supporters. The donations were made to and through our “Give A Kid A Dream” foundation.

Next year the eighth Annual Fantasy Boxing Camp will be held over the Labor Day weekend again. The dates are: September 3 through September 6, 2010. Mark the date.

Athletes can still sign up for U.S. Grappling World Team Trials in Phoenix, Ariz., Oct. 22-24

Grappling athletes can still sign up to compete in the U.S. Grappling World Team Trials, which will be held in Phoenix, Ariz., October 22-24.

The U.S. Grappling World Team Trials is the qualifying event for the U.S. team which will compete at the FILA Grappling World Championships in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., December 11-13.

There will be competition in both No-Gi and Gi Grappling at the U.S. Grappling World Team Trials, and divisions for both men and women.

Men’s No-Gi and Gi Division weight classes: 60 kg (132 lbs), 66 kg (145.5 lbs), 74 kg (163 lbs), 84 kg (185 lbs), 96 kg (211.5 lbs), 120 kg (264.5 lbs), and OPEN.

Women’s No-Gi an Gi Division weight classes: 50 kg (110 lbs), 55 kg (121 lbs), 59 kg (130 lbs), 63 kg (138.75 lbs), 67 kg (147.5 lbs), and OPEN.

The No-Gi Grappling competition will be held Friday, October 23. The Gi Grappling competition will be held Saturday, October 24.

USA Grappling National Coach Ricardo Liborio has challenged the nation’s best Grapplers to try out for the U.S. team. Liborio hopes to put together a very strong team to defend the World Team title in both styles. The United States was the World Team champions in both No-Gi and Gi competitions at the FILA Grappling World Championships in Switzerland in 2008.

On-line registration ends Tuesday, October 20 at 6:00 PM Central Standard Time. The entry fee to register online is $75 per style.

MIXED FIGHTING LEAGUE’S FIRST EVENT KICKS OFF OCTOBER 17th

Montreal, September 29th 2009 – The Mixed Fighting League is proud to present its first event which will take place at the Claude-Robillard Sport Complex on October 17th. The event promises mixed martial fans an evening filled with intense action that will focus on Quebec’s most promising MMA athletes. Aptly titled “The Beginning”, this event is presented in collaboration with Bud Light, Head Rush Clothing and Days Hotel.

Dirk Waardenburg, promoter and founder of the MFL organization is extremely enthusiastic about the positive reaction he got from the people involved in combat sports in Quebec. “I believe that the creation of an organization truly dedicated to local athletes is a very well perceived idea” commented Mr. Waardenburg. “Because Quebec was such a pioneer in the early days of combat sports, we are now seeing more of an internationalization of the MMA scene, but I believe it is time to allow our young athletes to shine and to give them an opportunity to grow in the sport”.

The MFL also points out certain familiar names on the card, such as the veteran Thierry “The Surgeon” Quenneville, the dangerous Guillaume DeLorenzi, the new sensation Derek Gauthier and the very promising Yannick Galipeau.

Thierry Quenneville (13-8-0), who has been making a name for himself for the last seven years in Quebec, will try to stay on the path of victory after his recent win against Douglas Evans on February 27. The man whose only defeat in his last four fights was against the former champion of the late TKO organization, Hatsu Hioki, is determined to show his fans he still has the will to win. Headlining the fight card, Quenneville promises an action-packed bout. His opponent, Tim Tamaki (8-14-0) from the Canadian Martial arts center in Lethbridge Alberta, is still training under the tutelage of Lee Mein. The one called “The Chin” has an extensive experience and recently got back to his winning ways against Jesse Fox on September 12 after a difficult 8 fight losing streak. More motivated than ever to remain victorious, Tamaki can rely on the support of a solid team made up of Jason Day, Jesse Bongfeldt, Dan Chambers, Justin Tavernini and Jordan Mein.

The rising star Guillaume DeLorenzi (6-1-0), who is very quickly moving up the ranks and suffered his only loss to the UFC veteran “War Machine” on February 27th, will be back for a second fight in less than a month after a 6 month leave of absence from professional MMA. Having learned a lot from his loss, the athlete from Quebec city is hungry for a win. Proud of his recent victory against Lindsey Hawkes on September 19th, “Il Toro” is determined to add another victory to his record. DeLorenzi, famous for his tongue-lashings, his showmanship, and spectacular raw talent will not disappoint. He must be careful not to underestimate his opponent, Sebastien Gaguier (3-2-0). The athlete from Perpignan (France), also known as “The Linx”, is particularly dangerous on the ground and is a very close friend of the French judo sensation Ferrid Kheder. This globetrotter has trained with the likes of Joe Stevenson and Wanderlei Silva, amongst many, and is well known on the MMA scene south of the border. Garguier, who last fought Mathias Vasquez in Costa Rica as part of the Fite Nite event, is determined to do everything he can to make the fans forget his last defeat by winning against “Il Toro”. Who will come out on top?

The undefeated and well-liked Derek Gauthier (4-0-0), know to many as the next Georges St-Pierre not only because of a definite physical resemblance but also because they both trained with Stephan Potvin and Kristof Midoux, is back with a strong intention of adding a victory to his unblemished record. After disposing of Joseph Paquet, Kris Parti, Yannick Galipeau and Dave Pariseau in a most expediting fashion, this fan of quick wins learned to love short fights that end in the first round. His opponent, Mike Medrano (5-4-0), who is coming back from a loss to Mike Campbell this last September, better watch out! Medrano believes his experience will play a determining role, having fought nine times in the octagon during his pro-career. The American who trains with Team Rhino in New-Jersey is not afraid of fighting in hostile territory against a local favorite.

Another fighter who was also once compared to Georges St-Pierre for his stand-up abilities because of his Kyokushin background, Yannick Galipeau (2-2-0) will try to get his record on the plus side after two consecutive losse to both Derek Gauthier and “Sensei” Dubé. This young up-and-comer wants to use his last victory against Joseph Paquet in March 2008 as the starting point for the rest of his career. He feels very confident and should present a formidable challenge for anyone stepping in his way. The professional boxing veteran Patrick Tessier (0-0-0 in MMA), who has thirteen professional boxing fights behind him, will not have an easy task in his MMA debut. He relies on his punching power and his experience in the ring to dispose of his opponent. Back from a hard loss to Ali Nestor Charles (boxer and MMA fighter), Tessier should feel at home with the MMA crowd, having boxed in MMA events before.

Also on the MFL 1: The Beginning card will be Yan Pellerin going up against the dangerous Jason Cecil from Ontario, Dimitri Waardenburg facing off against Drummondville’s Pierre-Étienne Marcoux, the promising Stéphane Chrétien who will meet Team Legion’s rising star Kevin Morin, Guillaume Fortier fighting Érick Dumaine who is also from Drummondville’s Team Bergeron, Marcus Célestin going to war against Marc Blackburn, Sebastien Vachon facing Jeff Royer from Sherbrooke, Alexio Garcia facing T.J. Coletti, and the Acadian Bruno Lurette going up against Fred Bélanger.

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 9 — CBS, Strikeforce and M-1 Global today officially announced the fight card for mixed martial arts’ (MMA) return to primetime with CBS/ STRIKEFORCE/M-1 GLOBAL SATURDAY NIGHT FIGHTS, Saturday, Nov. 7 (9:00 PM, live ET/delayed PT) on the CBS Television Network.

“We’re looking forward to delivering an explosive night of world class MMA action on CBS,” said Scott Coker, Founder and CEO of Strikeforce. “We have the world’s # 1 fighter, Fedor, making his network primetime debut against an undefeated powerhouse in Brett Rogers and, with the stars lined up for the remainder of the card, it is bound to be an exciting night of television.”

The following four primetime matchups are confirmed for CBS/ STRIKEFORCE/ M-1 GLOBAL SATURDAY NIGHT FIGHTS on Saturday, Nov. 7:

* Fedor “The Last Emperor” Emelianenko vs. Brett “The Grim” Rogers
* Jake Shields vs. Jason “Mayhem” Miller (Middleweight Title Fight)

FEDOR “THE LAST EMPEROR” EMELIANENKO vs. BRETT “THE GRIM” ROGERS :

Simply referred to as “Fedor” by fans around the world, the 6-foot, 235-pound Russian is one of the most dominant fighters in the sport. A master of the Russian military combat system, Sambo, he boasts a record of 30 wins, one loss, no draws with 16 wins by submission, seven knockouts and seven decisions. His opponent, undefeated American, 28-year-old Brett Rogers (10-0) stands 6-feet, 5-inches tall, weighs 265 pounds and brings two of the heaviest hands in the sport to the cage. Both Fedor and Rogers ’ last victories came against former heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski.

JAKE SHIELDS vs. JASON “MAYHEM” MILLER

In the night’s middleweight title fight (185 pounds), Jake Shields (23-4-1) squares off against Jason “Mayhem” Miller (22-6). Shields, widely considered one of the best fighters in the world, brings an impressive 12-fight win streak to the cage, six of his last seven coming by way of first round submission. Most recently, he defeated world-ranked middleweight “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler in his Strikeforce debut on June 6. His opponent, Miller, a fellow submission expert, is one of MMA’s most exciting fighters. The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai specialist is the host of MTV’s reality series “Bully Beatdown” and trains with two of the sport’s most recognizable fighters, Randy “The Natural” Couture and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson . He currently has 13 submission victories on his resume.

GEGARD “THE DREAMCATCHER” MOUSASI vs. RAMEAU THIERRY “THE AFRICAN ASSASSIN” SOKOUDJOU

Gegard Mousasi and Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou will face one another in the night’s light heavyweight (205 pounds) bout. Mousasi (26-2-1) of Leiden , Netherlands , recently scored his 13th consecutive victory on August 15, 2009 by winning his US debut and the Strikeforce light heavyweight title in a first round victory over defending champion Renato “Babalu” Sobral on SHOWTIME®. Sokoudjou (7-4), known to his fans as “The African Assassin,” has scored six of his seven wins by knockouts and brings an impressive striking game to the cage.

FABRICIO “VAI CAVALO” WERDUM vs. ANTONIO “JUNIOR” SILVA

Fabricio “Vai Cavalo” Werdum will face Antonio “Junior” Silva in a matchup of two promising Brazilian heavyweights. Werdum is a two-time Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world champion and a submission expert while Silva has nine KOs in his 13 victories. Werdum, a former PRIDE and UFC standout, is coming off an impressive first round submission victory in his Strikeforce debut on Aug. 15 over veteran Mike Kyle. Silva, a fellow 6-foot-4 Brazilian, will be making his Strikeforce debut after compiling a remarkable 13-1 record since he turned pro in 2005.

SHOWTIME Sports will produce the four-fight event with host Gus Johnson calling the action and MMA legend Frank Shamrock and Mauro Ranallo serving as color analysts. The executive producer is David Dinkins, Jr.
