On the Brink of redemption; Veteran Aaron Brink hopes to start rebuilding his reputation with PureCombat

There have been many ups and downs during Aaron Brink’s mixed martial arts career.
And it really has nothing to do with wins and losses. Brink has been a player in mixed martial arts for a long time now, posting a 21-18 career record. But his ups and downs extend farther than his record.
Brink hasn’t stepped into a cage for a fight since March 3, 2007. But that is all about to change at PureCombat’s “Fearless” show on October 17 at the International Agri-Center in Tulare, Calif.
“My last fight was in 2007,” Brink said. “I want to get a chance to get back in there. And I didn’t get any favors with this fight. They’re throwing me to the wolves right away.”
Brink will fight Anthony Ruiz in a scheduled three round heavyweight bout.
“I know he’s tough and I know he will try to wear me down,” Brink said about Ruiz. “But I’m prepared to go the distance. I know what kind of fighter he is.”
Brink said he has been training three times a day and has worked his way down to 235 pounds from 274 pounds. He is hoping to be at 220 pounds by fight time.
It wasn’t long ago that training was probably the last thing on Brink’s mind. He has had a history of drug abuse and also spent time in the adult film industry.
Brink’s addiction to methamphetamines became such a big problem that his family had to step in.
Brink’s trials with drug abuse were documented on the A&E television series “Intervention.”

Ruiz returning home on special mission

LAS VEGAS (October 7, 2009) – Two-time world heavyweight champion John “The Quietman” Ruiz returns home October 15 to replace boxing equipment recently stolen from the South Boston Boxing Club.
Ruiz, the first and only world heavyweight champion of Latino heritage, was recently profiled on CNN. He is speaking this weekend at the University of Kansas (“An Evening of US Latino and Latin American Boxing History) and next week will be a special guest at the American Association of Professional Ringside Physicians (“AAPRP”) annual convention and awards night at Mohegan Sun.
“My brother, Eddie, helps train kids at the South Boxing Boxing Club,” John explained. “He called me last month and told me all of their boxing equipment had been stolen. I offered to donate equipment but, when I accepted an invitation to attend the AAPRP convention, I decided to visit the South Boston Boxing Club to donate the equipment, in person, and meet the kids there. I know how much the South Boston Boxing Club does to help kids and I want to bring awareness to the important things they and boxing clubs all over are doing. If I can help these kids in some small way like this, it’s the very least I can do because that’s how I got started, and I’ll never forget where I come from. I’m going to drive up for the day from Mohegun Sun with my wife, Maribel. I’ll also be able see some family members and friends. I’m really looking forward to this.”
Ruiz, who was born in Methuen (MA) and raised in Chelsea (MA), is the WBA mandatory challenger. He hopes to be fighting for the WBA title again early next year against the winner of the November 7th Nicolai Valuev-David Haye championship match.
At the South Boston Boxing Club (Oct. 15 between 2-4 PM/ET), Ruiz put on a light, open workout, formerly present the boxing equipment, and have a meet & greet where he will sign autographs and pose for pictures with club members and the public.

Spina plans to put Del Valle’s lights out on Halloween at Mohegan Sun

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Oct. 7, 2009) – Providence power-punching light heavyweight contender Joey “KO Kid” Spina won’t be trick or treatin’ this coming Halloween Night. His goal is to become the first to stop former world champion Lou “Honey Boy” Del Valle within the distance in their Oct. 31st throw-down, headlining “Fright Night At The Sun,” in the 10-round main event at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.
“Fright Night At The Sun” is promoted by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc. (CES), in association with Mohegan Sun Casino.
The 32-year-old Spina (25-1-1, 17 KOs), fighting out of Providence, is rated between the top 12 to 15 contenders in each of the four major boxing organizations. “I plan to beat another former champion,” Spina said about Del Valle. “That should get me rated in the top 10 and position me for a title fight. My goal is to be the first to knock out Del Valle. He’s older now and I don’t think he’ll be able to take the punishment I’m going to give his body. I think I’ll stop him with a body punch, like I did to (Jessie) Brinkley. I’m not going to rush in looking for a knockout and leave myself open to get caught. He’s a counter puncher and I like to dictate. I’m going to bang him with right hands and left hooks; I don’t jab too much.”
Del Valle (36-6-1, 22 KOs), a New York southpaw, has never been stopped in 43 pro bouts. He captured the vacant WBA light heavyweight title in 1997, stopping European champion “Fast” Eddy Smulders in the eighth round. Lou was the first to floor the great Roy Jones, Jr. in their 1998 WBC/WBA unification bout, which Jones won by unanimous 12-round decision. Del Valle also went the distance in three other world title fights in a loss to Virgil Hill and a loss and draw versus Bruno Girard.
“I’ve only fought one left-hander, Carl Daniels, who was another former world champ,” Spina remarked. “He was crafty like Del Valle. I had no experience fighting a southpaw, not even sparring, but I won that fight (DEC10). I’m getting good southpaw sparring for my fight against Del Valle. He can’t beat my pressure and age certainly is on my side. If I’m in great shape – I will be – he doesn’t have a chance of beating me. I’m very happy with my conditioning and defense. It’s hard to improve those things. I’d like to throw more combinations instead of loading up and throwing one big punch at a time. I didn’t have a lot of amateur experience and I’m still learning.”
New England and Eastern Boxing Association super bantamweight champion “Machine Gun” Mike Oliver (22-2, 7 KOs), of Hartford, takes on upset specialist Andre Wilson (11-3-1, 9 KOs) in the 8-round co-feature.
Also on the undercard in separate four-round bouts are a pair of Connecticut prospects from Puerto Rico, Hartford junior middleweight David Bauza (2-0, 2 KOs) and light welterweight Edwin Soto (1-0, 1 KO) of New Haven.
Unbeaten lightweight Ryan “The Polish Prince” Kielczewski (5-0, 2 KOs), 2008 National Golden Gloves Tournament runner-up from Quincy (MA), and unbeaten Philadelphia lightweight Frank Trader (6-0, 2 KOs) are also scheduled to fight in separate four-round matches. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

Thursday morning will be the arrival into New York. Orientation will be from 12:00 noon to 1:oo pm. The first workout will be from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. A discussion on Masters boxing will be from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm. Free time after that.
Friday morning will have training from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon. The afternoon session will run from 2 pm to 4:00 pm. A discussion on Amateur boxing and White Collar boxing will be from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm. Free time after that.
Saturday morning will have light training from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon. Match ups for the evening show will take place from 12:00 noon to 1:00 pm. An optional workout for those not competing in the evening show from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. The weigh in for the show will be from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm. The sanctioned Master Boxing Show will begin at 7:00 pm and will end by 10:00 pm.
The cost of the Clinic is $299.00.
