Super bantamweight Roberto Benitez improved his record to 6-0 with 3 KOs as he completely outworked Angel Paneto (4-6-2 with 2 KOs) over six rounds. Benitez, a 2000 U.S. Olympic alternate and 2004 Olympic teammate to Vargas, was coming off a three-year layoff. He landed flush combinations, mixing it up to both the body and head, dropping his opponent various times throughout the fight. Paneto was able to make it to the sixth and final bell but Benitez didn’t lose a round on any of the three official scorecards.

HARRISON KEEPS CAREER ALIVE BUT WILLIAMS EXITS EARLY

AUDLEY HARRISON kept his boxing career alive with victory in Barry Hearn’s Prizefighter Heavyweights III tournament.

Harrison, 37, insisted he would retire if he suffered a disappointing evening at London’s ExCel but instead scooped the £32,000 top prize.

Former Olympic Games gold medalist Harrison claimed the Prizefighter trophy with a second round knockout of Irishman Coleman Barrett in the final.

“I think I’ve now created an opportunity where hopefully I can achieve my goals,” said Harrison, who was still booed by a number of fans.

“My journey isn’t about the criticism I get, it’s about my own goal to be World Champion and I get knocked down but always get back up again.”

This latest eight-man, one-night Prizefighter tournament was held in front of 5,000 fans at a packed ExCel with shocks and knockdowns galore with fighters hitting the canvas seven times.

Harrison claimed the title after a stoppage of Scott Belshaw in the quarter-final then a points triumph over Danny Hughes in the semi-final before the victory over Barrett.

“Everyone thought the door was closed for me after I lost in December against Martin Rogan but it wasn’t,” added Harrison.

“The place was sold out and I’ve seen loads of coverage in the papers so there’s still interest in Audley Harrison.

“After those three performances, there’s still hope for me and hope for Britain to have a World Champion.

“My critics are always going to be there and the battering I take out of the ring is why I live in America.

“It’s an unwarranted battering but I’m not going to cry about it. My left hand was firing and I had three good victories.

“All roads lead to a world title so I want to do whatever gets me to a world title the quickest way possible.”

While Harrison kept his career alive, there will be serious questions as to Danny Williams’ future in the sport.

He was British Champion going into the event but a sensational points defeat against unfancied Carl Baker in the quarter-final means the British title will become vacant.

Williams, who was 1/10 to defeat Baker, had hoped to fight arch rival Harrison in the final but was knocked down twice in the opening round by Baker.

Barrett had reached the final after scraping past Baker in the semi-final and Welshman Scott Gammer in the quarter-final, with both victories coming on points.

Hughes claimed the most impressive victory of the night in his quarter-final tie when he stopped Birmingham’s Neil Perkins after only 45 seconds.

NICKELS AND SPRATT RETURN TONIGHT AT MFC

The Maximum Fighting Championship returns tonight with MFC 22: Payoff at the River Cree Resort and Casino.

The event will be televised live on HDNet Fights. Included on the card are several UFC veterans, as well as a batch of MFC staples.

The headlining bout will be match up between two top grapplers, as Jason MacDonald will look to topple Travis Lutter.

THOMAS ADDED TO WEC CARD

The WEC has confirmed all ten bouts for the rescheduled WEC 43 card on Oct. 10 at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas.

The card was pushed back last month when Ben Henderson went down due to an undisclosed injury. He’ll be back and ready to take on Donald Cerrone in a lightweight tilt to determine the interim WEC lightweight champion.

Changes to the card are Will Campuzano subbing in for Akitoshi Tamura against Damacio Page, Noah Thomas replacing the injured Rafael Rebello against Scott Jorgensen and Javier Vazquez in for injured Mark Hominick against Deividas Taurosevicius.

Rooney’s Boxing Gym’s inaugural Boxing/MMA White Collar event, Judgement Day @ The Cable Club in Southwark, London, on Wednesday night proved to be such a massive hit with City of London workers and boxing/MMA fans alike that Judgement Day II is already planned for the 25th November ‘09.

The sold out crowd at Judgement Day One were treated to a professional level six bout White Collar Boxing card, including an all female match up, followed by an explosive exhibition match by BanDogs MMA stars Jamaine Facey and Michael Brown.

As the first fight, featuring Vallerio ‘The Italian Stallion’ against Sabri ‘The Pride of Rooney’s’ got underway you could easily be forgiven for thinking you were at the Colosseum in Ancient Rome, not at a plush London nightspot just a few hundred yards from the iconic Tower Bridge in London, as the chants that reverberated around the Cable Club on Wednesday night were more akin to a Gladiatorial battle than a City of London function. After a rather close match the decision was declared in the favour of the younger Sabri.

Next up was a ‘special’ Middleweight event, four rounds instead of three, featuring Tal ‘The Pride Of Israel, who was one of the three International entrants, against London’s finest Carl ‘The Rebel’ Rooney. After four furious toe to toe rounds the partisan crowd were elated as London’s Rooney walked away victorious following his magnificent boxing display.

A clear contender for ‘Fight of the Night’’, this bout could easily have been a co-feature on any televised Saturday night boxing show and the viewers would never have known it wasn’t a professional bout!

Following the Tal vs Rooney bout was another Middleweight contest, this time between the highly popular Ed ‘I’ll Tell You A’ Storey and another overseas visitor, Plinio ‘The Brazil Nut’, all the way from Rio De Janeiro. As before the ‘home’ crowd were elated when the victory rightly went to the British ‘home boy’ and no less than the former WBU Lightweight World Champion Colin Dunne presented Ed Storey with his trophy.

The big boys were next up as local boy Nicoli ‘The Beast’ squared up against Kent’s Nicky ‘No Shoes’. This was another first class bout that could be on any main stream boxing show, these two put on one of the best Heavyweight fights I have seen for a long time, I mean a long, long time, this was White Collar Boxing’s version of Ali – Frazier. It had it all, drama, nonstop action and a bloody conclusion. After three exciting rounds the Judges, like myself, couldn’t split these two stars and rightfully declared the bout a draw.

The noise level rose noticeably as the gorgeous ring card girls, page 3 regulars Francesca Santamaria and Penelope Ashton, welcomed the next two combatants to the arena. The reason for all the excitement wasn’t just because these two beauties, who had stripped down to their bikinis moments before, were centre ring, most was for fellow lovelies and local favourites, Hilary ‘South London’s Finest’ Lissenden and Bermondsey’s own ‘MariAnimal’ who were to take part in a Featherweight contest.

These two put on a another nonstop action show worthy of ‘Fight of the Night’ honours. After a fairly even first round, MariAnimal started to control the proceedings midway through the second round and It looked like it was all over for Lissenden late in the second round as MariAnimal landed a peach of hook that sent her opponent reeling on unsteady legs, not content to sit back and wait the Bermondsey girl went in for the kill throwing a massive left to the head followed by a right to the body forcing the referee to jump in to protect Lissenden, who protested that she was OK to continue, only for the bell to go just as the fight resumed.

The break seemed to be enough for Lissenden to recover as she fought her heart out against the constantly forward coming attacks from MariAnimal throughout the final round. The enthusiastic crowd, clearly impressed by the bravery and skill of both these women, erupted again as former Team GB Olympic coach, now Rooney’s Boxing Gym’s Director of Boxing Development and Coaching, Terry Edwards MBE personally presented a beaming MariAnimal with her winner’s trophy.

The crowd rushed back into the arena, following a short refreshment break, following the announcement that the main event, a Welterweight contest between Kent’s favourite son Adam McCann and, the final international visitor, Jack ‘The Pole’, was about to start.

The highly vocal crowd took the decibel meter off the dial as crowd favourite McCann entered the ring. This obviously fired up the Kent man as throughout the fight he just kept going forward throwing volleys of massive shots at his unsuspecting opponent, who had to resort to holding at times to be get his breath back. Don’t go thinking this was a one sided affair, anything but, as the Polish fighter gave an excellent display of defensive and counter punching boxing skills, along with the occasional offensive foray.

It came as no surprise that not only was Adam McCann declared the winner but also named ‘Fighter of the Night’ and the bout declared ‘Fight of the Night’ which was fitting for a main event.

Barely a handful of those in attendance left following the main bout due to the highly anticipated, and historic, inclusion of a Mixed Martial Arts exhibition fight.

BanDogs MMA Middleweight Stars Jamaine Facey and Michael Brown won their sport many new fans that night, with what can only be described as an awesome display of the discipline, ensuring that White Collar MMA will become a regular feature in future Rooney’s Boxing Gym promoted White Collar events. There is even talk, from the organisers, that a specific White Collar MMA event is being planned for January 2010.

Due to the success of this inaugural event Judgement Day II is already being planned, on Wednesday November 25th 2009, and will again be at the Cable Club. WHAT: HDNet to broadcast “HDNet Fights Presents: HEIWA DREAM 11 Featherweight Grand Prix 2009, Final Round” Tuesday, October 6 at 7:00 a.m. ET, from Yokohama Arena in Kanagawa, Japan. HDNet will also air an encore presentation of the event on Friday, October 9 at 10:00 p.m. ET.

The event features the conclusion of the DREAM Featherweight Grand Prix, a highly anticipated DREAM Lightweight title bout and the semi-finals of the Super Hulk tournament.

In the main event of the evening, two of the top 5 lightweights in the world collide in a highly anticipated rematch as DREAM Lightweight champion Joachim Hansen (19-7-1) puts his title on the line against Shinya Aoki (21-4). Hansen claimed the title on July 21, 2008 when he defeated Aoki by first round TKO at Dream 5. Hansen has not fought since while Aoki has gone 4-1, including wins over Eddie Alvarez and Vitor “Shaolin” Ribeiro, with his only loss coming in the welterweight division.

In other action, the DREAM Featherweight Grand Prix will come to a conclusion as Bibiano Fernanders (5-2) faces Joe Warren (2-0) and Hiroyuki Takaya (11-6-1) meets Hideo Tokoro (22-16-1) in semi-final action with the winners advancing to face each other in the final later in the evening.Also in the semi-finals of the Super Hulk tournament, Hong Man Choi (2-2) meets Ikuhisa Minowa (42-20-8) and Bob Sapp(10-5) squares off with Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou (6-4).

The televised card also features Gesias “J.Z.” Calvancante (14-3-1) vs. Daisuke Nakamura (20-10), Andrews Nakahara (2-1) vs. Zelg Galesic (9-4), and Kazuyuki Miyata (7-7) vs. Daiki “DJ.taiki” Hata(11-5-3) in a Featherweight tournament reserve bout.

WHEN: Tuesday, October 6, at 7:00 a.m. ET with an encore presentation on Friday, October 9 at 10:00 p.m. ET on HDNet.
