For the 2nd straight year, a Legendary Blue Horizon fight is tabbed as Philly’s Finest; to be honored on October 12th at awards gala.

PHILADELPHIA (SEPTEMBER 25TH, 2009)—One guy had a record of 14-1. His opponent was 13-14. Did those records matter on the night when Gee Cullmer and Jameel Wilson waged war on September 12th, 2008 in The Legendary Blue Horizon?

No. These were two Philly fighters who put on yet another classic inside the hallowed halls of The Legendary Blue Horizon and on October 12th the two will be acknowledged for that great fight as they will be honored by accepting the award for the 2008 Philadelphia Fight of The year at 2nd annual Briscoe Awards Ceremony at the Veteran Boxing Association located at 2733 East Clearfield Street in Philadelphia.

This is the 2nd straight year that a fight that was promoted by Vernoca L. Michael and Blue Horizon Boxing Promotions Inc. was the winner of the Fight of the Year as in 2007 the award went to the memorable war between Elad Shmouel and Lenny DeVictoria.

Don Fraser honors boxing’s best this Saturday!

Don Fraser is a legend in boxing.

As a former editor of KO magazine, PR Director for the Olympic Auditorium, Inglewood Forum, promoter for the Olympic and Irvine Marriott Hotel, it would be an understatement to say he knows the business of the sweet science very, very well.

And he has been a mentor to many in the boxing community. Fraser’s generosity in mentoring others is well-documented; the proof is in his protégés’ many successes. The veteran of the fight game is also founder and President of the California Boxing Hall of Fame.

This organization holds an annual induction for those who have contributed to the sport of boxing in the California. This West Coast function is a prestigious honor that I, myself, am proud to be a part of. Last year, Don surprised me with my own induction (along with Steve Harpst). Our day at the Sportsmen’s Lodge in Studio City will always remain a special highlight for me.

The 2009 awards ceremony will be taking place this Saturday at Steven’s Steak & Seafood House in the City of Commerce. Tickets for the yearly banquet are a coveted commodity and this weekend’s awards sold out in record time.

“There has been so much support for this. We’ll have over 600 people at the awards,” Fraser says. “There are so many noteworthy people being honored. It’s totally sold out–we have now arranged a closed circuit area in the bar for the overflow.”

Even though this is for the “best in the West” in boxing, there’s been plenty of cross-country support for all of the inductees. “Howard Smith’s hometown of Arkansas has sent over special certificates for the affair,” Don adds, just one example of the excitement building up for the event where guests can meet and greet some great heroes and legends in boxing.

Since I know firsthand what it’s like to receive this award (I was thrilled, humbled, and just a little nervous during last year’s speech), I checked in with three of the newest inductees: a trainer, a fight promoter, and a former boxer.

John Bray, Roy Englebrecht, and Alex Ramos will all be inducted this Saturday and I wanted to hear their thoughts on being immortalized by the one and only Mr. Don Fraser (a 2005 International Boxing Hall of Fame inductee himself).

Trainer John Bray is a former pro boxer who also had a great amateur career. He is currently a trainer of many top prospects, including Miguel Espino, who will be fighting in October. The Valley resident is also founder of the John Bray Boxing Foundation.

He’s honored to be part of the ceremony, “I would like to thank the boxing community as a whole, my mom, brothers and sisters and my wife.” The busy trainer first met Fraser through a mutual friend, Ken Green, who is also being inducted this year. Bray will be in attendance at the luncheon before heading straight out to the Staples Center for the Klitschko-Arreola brawl. He’s involved in one of the undercard bouts, “I’ll be working the corner for Cisse Salif, who will be fighting Cedric Boswell.” Heavyweight Salif has been one of the main sparring partners for headliner Chris Arreola.

Well-known fight promoter Roy Englebrecht (Roy Englebrecht Promotions) has been a mainstay in SoCal boxing for over two decades. He gives credit where credit is due–to his mentor Don Fraser.

“We’ve had success together at the “Battle in the Ballroom” which was really his swan song,” Englebrecht tells me. “In 1984, he told me if I got a sponsor we could put on a show. So I got Tecate for $1,000 (which was a lot of money back then!). Our first show was in February 1985 and we wondered if we’d even sell one ticket; we had to turn away 300 people! It’s now our 25th Anniversary.”

03The California businessman, who is co-owner of the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes baseball team and has been involved with the Arena Football League’s Anaheim Piranhas, and the Los Angeles Lakers and Kings, continues, “I am happy that I was there on that first night to be able to have Don teach me the fight promotion business. The success I’ve had in boxing promotions as well as in the MMA business is due to the fact that Don Fraser took a gamble that professional boxing would work in an upscale ballroom in an Orange County hotel!”

Learning the biz from Fraser was a priceless commodity that carries through today. “We were the leaders and we did this every year, every month for seven years straight! It was hard work,” remembers Englebrecht. “Anybody who’s been in business for 25 years, in the same location is unheard of. But anyone who’s been in the BOXING business–in the same location–for 25 years is downright scary! It’s amazing. Now I do it every other month, and my son, Drew works with me.”

The father-son duo continues to hold successful sold-out fight nights. The Englebrecht’s next show at the Irvine Marriott is scheduled for October 29, with his MMA “Fist Series” on November 21 and his boxing series will feature a year-end show on December 17.

For boxer Alex Ramos, Saturday’s induction is a badge of honor the fighter can add to his belt. “I am honored to be in the state of California. This means a lot to me,” The “Bronx Bomber” explains. “My other career highlight was winning my belt in Atlantic City. It was for the USBA title; it seems like yesterday but that was so long ago. After that, I went to fight in Argentina for the title and lost. It was 1994 and I retired after that.

“It’s a beautiful feeling to be amongst this boxing family. I love being around the fighters and going to the fights, you know? It’s what keeps me alive!”

Ramos has had his share of health problems in the last few years but is currently on the mend. “I feel great; I feel good. I’m on the right medication now,” he confirms. “I thank God I’m alive–I had it tough last year.”

The fighter, like many other boxers, knows what it’s like to be in the limelight one minute and down-and-out the next. He began his own charitable organization, the Retired Boxers Foundation, to help out the less fortunate. “Right now we’re helping out a lot of other boxers in need,” the former middleweight states about his California-based foundation. Jacquie Richardson, executive director of Ramos’ foundation is also being inducted this year.

Joining Bray, Englebrecht, Ramos, and Richardson as the Class of 2009 Honorees are: Manny Pacquiao, Freddie Roach, Timothy Bradley, Gary Shaw, Michael Buffer, Jesus Pimentel, Charlie Powell, Davey Gallardo, Van Barbieri, Jack O’Halloran, P.J. Goossen, Robert Garcia, Eduardo Garcia, Ken Green, Howard Smith, Jesse Reid, Paul Andrews, Paul Vaden, John Jackson Sr., Gary Ballin, Kid Rayo, Tony Cerda, Tony Fuentes, Bob Fuentes, Sugar Ray Robinson and Jim Jeffries.

Klitschko Vs. Arreola Preview

Saturday, September 26 – Los Angeles, California (HBO) – heavyweights: Vitali Klitschko (37-2, 36 KOs) vs. Chris Arreola (27-0, 24 KOs)

In the past few years, boxing fans have been treated to a number of weight classes being truly competitive. Due to a number of factors, many of the top fighters in most divisions have been willing to face top opposition. As a result, the sport of boxing is having a resurgence of great fights. Unfortunately, the heavyweight division has been lacking.

This weekend, there is a fight that could change that. Tough Chris Arreola is challenging Vitali Klitschko for his WBC title. While his brother Wladimir holds the real heavyweight title (and Nicolay Valuev has another of the paper titles), Vitali is considered by many to be the better of the Klitschko brothers in several key areas. He is bigger, stronger, has a better chin, and has a superior overall record.

Going into the fight, Vitali will be favored over his younger challenger, and a strong case can be made that he will win. A number of my friends have said that even if he does win, at least it should be an exciting fight – something that has been sorely lacking in the division for years. If it is a good fight, then the sport benefits. However, if it’s a good fight and Arreola pulls off an upset, the results will be much better for American boxing fans.

While both Klitschko brothers are large, athletic, and dominant fighters, they do not generate excitement, either inside or outside of the ring. Chris Arreola, on the other hand, gets people’s attention wherever he is. Not only are his fights fun to watch, but Chris combines a quick wit with equal parts of charm and snarl in his interviews with the media. But that type of charisma is nothing that Klitschko can learn, nor is it going to make a difference inside the ring this weekend.

Vitali presents an imposing challenge for Arreola. He is bigger, more experienced, very strong, intelligent, and patient. He intimidates most opponents, and he has the ability to exploit any weakness or mistake made by the man in front of him. There is no better example than his recent win over Samuel Peter: Sam was not in good shape, entered the ring scared, and stood right in front of Vitali. The result was that Sam quit after eight rounds, though the case could easily be made that he had given up hope in the gym weeks before.

In order to win, Chris has to enter the ring both mentally and physically prepared for the toughest fight of his career. That means recognizing exactly how good Klitschko really is. And the truth is that yes, he is physically gifted, talented, and efficient in the ring. But he is not a great fighter. In fact, he has only fought two A-grade opponents, and by no coincidence, he was TKOed in both of those fights. Vitali has also beat a number of B- and C-grade fighters, but he hasn’t beaten anyone that Arreola wouldn’t be favored to knock out.

Klitschko is also getting old. He did not look particularly inspirational in his last fight, when he knocked out Juan Carlos Gomez. He has had some difficulties hitting moving targets. Thus, unlike a stationary Sam Peter, Chris Arreola needs to be a moving target. He needs to bob and weave. Peter bobbed, but has never mastered the skill of weaving. The weaving allows a fighter the ability to move side-to-side, in the manner that a young Joe Frazier did so well. It’s that stepping to the side that presents the angles that Chris will need to hit and not get hit. It will allow him to deliver his punches, but not allow Vitali to get measure him with his jab, and get set to land his harder punches.

A fighter has to be in very good condition to bob and weave for six or eight rounds. That does not mean that they must be sculpted, with a six-pack. Smokin’ Joe was not built like Ken Norton. Critics used to say that he carried too much weight in his thighs and back side, when he was a contender. But he was always prepared to go to war in that ring, for however many rounds an opponent could last.

Some good boxing writers have pointed out that not only does Vitali have a good chin, but Chris is not a one-punch KO artist. This is, of course, absolutely true. However, Chris can hurt anyone he hits, and if he hits any heavyweight today for long, they will not last. One of the laws of boxing is that if a fighter quits once in his career, he will be prone to quitting again, when hurt and pressured. In April of 2000, Vitali Klitschko quit after nine rounds against Chris Byrd, who he out-weighed by 35 pounds.

If Chris Arreola enters the ring in the best shape – mentally and physically – that he’s ever been in, he is going to leave the ring with the WBC heavyweight title. It will be the first time that a Mexican-American has captured that crown. It will not only be the best thing to happen in that division in many years, it will be great for the sport.

Middleweight prospect Edwin Rodriguez headlining “Saturday Afternoon Special”

Olympian Demetrius Andrade in Twin River co-feature

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Sept. 24, 2009) – Undefeated prospect Edwin “La Bomba” Rodriguez has been added to the loaded “Saturday Afternoon Special” as the headliner in an 8-round middleweight match.

U.S. Olympian Demetrius “The Cape Verdean Assassin” Andrade and former University of Rhode Island football player, Vladine Biosse, also will be featured on a rare matinee pro boxing show, “Saturday Afternoon Special,” Oct. 3 at 2 p.m. the Twin River Event Center in Lincoln, R.I.

“Saturday Afternoon Special” is presented by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports Inc. (CES), in association with Twin River.

Rodriguez (11-0, 8 KOs) was supposed to fight last night in New Hampshire, but his opponent pulled out and now “La Bomba” will explode on Rhode Island against an opponent to be determined.

“The other night I got a call from two friends, Larry Army and Lou DiBella, asking if I could help them out because Edwin’s fight had fallen out,” CES president Burchfield explained. “He had been training 5-6 weeks. I didn’t hesitate. His manager, Larry Army, in two days got a front page story about Edwin fighting on our card in the Worcester newspaper. He has developed a bond with his trainer, Peter Manfredo, Sr., and has a great promoter, Lou DiBella. Edwin has all of the ingredients to be world champion. After the deal was finalized, the first call I got was from Edwin, who thanked me for putting him on the card. I’m proud – all of the CES fighters are proud – to have Edwin fighting in the October 3rd main event.”

“It doesn’t bother me at all,” Rodriguez said about fighting on a different card. “One minute I was fighting, then I wasn’t, and this is a blessing in disguise. I’m headlining a better card in a better venue. I’ve been training hard to improve because in a year I want to be fighting for a title. I want to fight people who make me a better fighter, instead of fighting [opponents] I put away in a round or two, which will only hold me back from improving and getting me ready for when my title shot comes.”

Andrade, fighting at home again out of Providence, is a former World amateur champion fighting in the 6-round co-feature versus another undefeated prospect, Chris Chatman (3-0, 1 KO). Andrade’s (7-0, 6 KOs) fight will be a 6-rounder, in association with Banner Promotions and Star Boxing.

Providence super middleweight Biosse (3-0, 3 KOs), a 2-time Junior College All-America football player at Dean College, has shown consistent adjustments from the gridiron to the ring and is ahead of the pace with three wins, all by impressive knockouts. I saw Bauza knock out his opponent on CES’ last show. Andrade is a helluva fighter and a good friend. Jesus is a good fighter, too. We’re going to be world champions. I’m happy to be part of this show. I will do my job and put my opponent to sleep.”
